In a pre-session presentation related to March 19, 2023 event on upgrading to Windows 10 from different operating systems, Microsoft’s Julius Ho has noted down few interesting points. These points form the base of this post on how to upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and even Windows 7, and the process involved.
It is clear by now that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for all – even for some who are using counterfeit Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 and will be available somewhere this Summer – which could be anytime from June to September.
Windows 10 – Time to get excitedWindows 10 is indeed exciting. Microsoft is betting everything on the operating system, which will be the same across all types of devices – from PCs to notebooks to tablets to phones. The features may be more or less available depending upon the type of device being used. For example, a Windows 512 MB phone might have fewer features compared to a phone with 1GB memory.
To make it all legitimate, Microsoft is allowing everyone with Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 – even if they are using pirated copies – to upgrade to Windows 10, after which, it could well be subscription-based, as Microsoft had stated earlier that updates will be pushed to Windows 10 as and when required. There will, in all probability, be no Windows 11. Windows 10 is Windows as a Service and works just like that – pushing updates and keeping the operating system up to date to deal with malware and cyber criminals – not to mention the later availability of user interface changes and other features.
Windows 10: Upgrade vs UpdateAccording to the PowerPoint slideshow, Windows 10 combines the best of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 while improving on the fundamentals such as ease of navigation and security. For the first time in the history of deploying a higher version of the operating system at enterprise levels, Microsoft is urging enterprises to upgrade the desktops, instead of creating disk images. It says the process will make it easier to upgrade to Windows 10.
Microsoft defines the word Update in three different contexts:
Modifying an existing operating system by changing some files
For desktops, it could be KBs (Windows Updates), patches or hotfixes
For mobile devices, it could even mean moving from Windows 8 (Apollo) to Windows 8.1 (Blue)
After defining updates, Microsoft defines Upgrade as follows:
For desktops, upgrade (and not update as defined above) means changing the entire operating system, reinstalling device drivers and apps
For Mobile, Microsoft says the terms “upgrade” and “update” are used interchangeably and that from a technology perspective, everything on mobile devices is an “update”
Windows 10 Upgrade Path & MatrixThe term “upgrade” would mean moving to Windows 10, and the term “update” means making changes to Windows 10 after it is released and installed on machines.
If you check out the Windows 10 upgrade matrix, you will see how it will be possible to upgrade to Windows 10.
You can see that the direct upgrade path is not supported on Windows 7 RTM, Windows 8, and Windows Phone 8.0. Windows users can burn an ISO to directly upgrade to Windows 10 if they are already using Windows 7 RTM, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 RTM, Windows 8.1.
Similarly, people using Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to get the “upgrade” as an update to Windows Phone.
Windows RT is not supported.
Looking at the matrix below, the path of using “updates” to move to Windows 10 is limited to Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1 S14. All other except RT have to use an ISO file. They can directly upgrade over the existing operating system so that device drivers don’t need to be installed separately again. The other method is clean install where you remove the older operating system, upgrade to Windows 10, install device drivers and all the apps that you need and were using before the “UPGRADE”.
As shown in the above table, desktops and notebooks can upgrade to Windows 10 using ISO media and in case of Windows 8.1 S14 (Windows 8.1 Update), using Windows Update.
For mobile phones, though it would be “pushing” the new operating system in a phased manner over a period of time, it is still called “update”. In other words, Windows 8.1 Phone will be automatically updated to Windows 10 after the latter releases. Generally speaking, the mobile phones check for software updates at regular intervals and if they find Windows 10, they will install the operating system after asking you for permission – just the way they did for upgrading from Windows Phone 8 to Windows Phone 8.1.
Windows 10 Upgrade ProcessWindows 10 will use partition switching according to the pre-session presentation by Microsoft on how to upgrade to Windows 10. If enough space is not available, Windows 10 may expand the system partition to make room for the new OS. Likewise, on mobile phones, the app files and customizable system files may be transferred to an SD card in case of low storage space. How To Escape That Forced Windows 10 Upgrade You Mistakenly Agreed To
On Monday, hordes of angry Windows users pelted Microsoft with complaints about being lured into upgrading their PCs over the weekend. For months, Microsoft has been urging users running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10 before the free offer expires on July 29. But the series of dialog boxes and other messages that Microsoft has sent users have become increasingly deceptive, burying the opt-out links amid text that appears to commit users to the upgrade.
The company was unable to explain how closing a dialog box translated into a consumer’s desire to upgrade to Windows 10. Microsoft representatives pointed out, however, that if you do mistakenly trigger the upgrade, you should still have an opportunity to opt out before it begins.
Microsoft described the new procedure on an updated support page, which notes that users will be given “an additional opportunity for cancelling or rescheduling the upgrade.”
How it should workBoth the confirmation and the additional opportunity appear to be the same thing: a popup that will emerge from the Get Windows 10 (GWX) icon on your taskbar, like so:
Here’s one opportunity to opt out of Windows 10.
Note the link within the popup to reschedule or cancel the upgrade. It’s unclear how that long the popup actually hangs around, but it’s certainly no good to anyone if it appears in the middle of the night or quickly vanishes.
If you’ve accidentally triggered the Windows 10 upgrade, you’ll receive a second, final alert: a 15-minute countdown timer that, again, is pretty useless if the upgrade takes place during a time when you’re away from your PC.

According to Microsoft, there’s also a second opportunity to opt out, part of the GWX app on your taskbar—the same Windows icon that appears in the reminder popup, above.
A second chance
This is where the choices begin to resemble a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book, and not a customer-friendly opt-out process. You may notice that the Windows 10 is a Recommended Update for this PC dialog is the same popup window that, when closed via the red button, began this whole process. Don’t make the same mistake twice!
For the screen, You signed up for Windows 10, and it’s ready! you should see a link to change upgrade schedule or cancel scheduled upgrade. In any event, if you want to get rid of Windows 10, you’ll want to end up on the screen titled Cancel your Windows 10 upgrade.
Hopefully, this screen means that you’re out of the woods.
You can hide notifications, tooSo does this mean that the Windows 10 upgrade monster has finally been slain? Well, as of revision 12.0 of Microsoft’s support document, yes. Hopefully things won’t change.
Microsoft’s reminders, however, won’t end (until possibly after the July 29 cutoff) until you take the following steps:

Note that you have the option of only showing the notifications without the icon, but why would you want that? In any event, that should end Microsoft’s Windows 10 nagging for good.

Simpler solutions soughtAs we’ve noted before, two third-party options pledge to block Windows 10 from being added to your computer: Never10, a simple utility, or GWX Control Panel, a more complex program that does the same thing. Microsoft still hasn’t said that why it chose this route, but it’s not surprising that users see it as a low-down, dirty trick. It sullies the goodwill Microsoft engendered with its Insider program, the free upgrade, and its other work with the Windows community.
Neither is it helpful that there’s only a labyrinthine, complicated process for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users to opt out of Windows 10. It’s small consolation that there actually is one, however. Let’s hope it remains.
Should You Upgrade To Windows 8?
Over the past few months, we’ve covered a significant amount of tips and hints regarding Microsoft’s upcoming operating system, Windows 8. However, we’ve yet to mention any tips regarding whether or not we would recommend Windows 8 to our site visitors and subscribers.

The fact is, many people will be updating their operating systems to Windows 8 later this month and many won’t. Windows 8 has been the primary focus of many tech blogs for the last few months, and many critics have dubbed Windows 8 as a flop; following Microsoft’s pattern of inconsistency, releasing a quality operating system, then a poor operating system:
Windows XP (considered to be a solid OS)
Windows Vista (considered to be a crappy OS)
Windows 7 (considered to be a solid OS)
Windows 8 (not even officially released yet, but is being considered to be a crappy OS)
With the tech critics and many others casting judgment on Windows 8’s new metro interface and other non-traditional features, many consumers may be a bit cautious about making the jump to Windows 8. However, I believe that the underlying factor of all of this criticism towards the new OS is simple… Windows 8 is different, so it comes off as an operating system that is complicated or difficult to understand. Additionally, using Windows 8 requires a slight learning curve and some change; most people do not like change and are creatures of habit.
With that noted, the best way to tell whether or not Windows 8 is an operating system that you will like is to simply download the Release Preview, so that you can try out the next gen OS for yourself. Actually, Windows 8 has a start screen… Dubbed the Metro Interface, which is tablet friendly. Windows 8’s new Start Menu is the single most controversial (hated and loved) feature of the new operating system. Many criticize the new metro interface as being too tablet optimized for use on a PC computer, but I don’t find it quite as hideous as many critics make it out to be. It’s different, and it does take some getting used to, but after you use it for a month or so, you may come to like the Windows 8 Metro feature.
Because the Windows 8 Metro UI replaces the traditional Start Menu, you will find yourself utilizing Windows Explorer a lot more, to navigate to file directories and other PC paths. This is not a new feature that wasn’t around in Windows 7, but I for one, never used Windows Explorer in Windows 7, because the Start Menu was there and I simply preferred that. In Windows 8, you will definitely use Windows Explorer.
So, the Start Menu is gone and you now navigate to paths and directories in Windows using Windows Explorer. To launch apps and programs, you use the Metro UI. However, if you simply can’t use Windows without a Start Menu, you can add it back! The following add-ons can add the traditional Start Menu to Windows 8:
So, if you can add the traditional Start Menu to Windows 8… maybe the switch wouldn’t be too bad… considering Windows 8 has some other new features that you might like, which we will get to later!
Windows 8 being great for tablets, but not for enterprise or productivity…
When I initially started using Windows 8 and was just getting accustomed to the new operating system, I would have agreed with that statement. Without the traditional Start Menu, the home screen can be quite distracting. In tablet environments the Metro interface is sweet, but in an enterprise or productivity environment, one could care less about the visual appeal of the Metro UI… the traditional Start Menu is more productive, as it can be used to access apps, folders, files, and basically any path in Windows.
However, once learned and adapted to, 8’s Metro UI can actually be quite snappy. You just have to get accustomed to it. Need to launch an app quickly from the desktop, but don’t want to have to launch the Start Screen to get to the app? Simply attach it to the desktop’s taskbar.
Windows 8’s Metro UI could also be very beneficial in enterprise environments, but for that, program and app developers will need to get busy updating their apps to be Windows 8 friendly, incorporating live tile support, full screen app support, etc…
Here’s an example: If you were considering using Windows 8 in a IT business model or enterprise environment with updated and current apps, it may go something like this:
Of course, you would need to have all of your company’s apps updated to Metro UI compatibility. If the above screenshot included live tiles with status updates, it could be very beneficial in a IT business’s enterprise environment, even more so than the standard Windows 7 desktop.
Control panel interfaces tend to do great in enterprise as is, so with all of your company’s apps updated to Windows 8 compatibility, you could utilize the Metro UI as a main control panel, easily customizable to be specific for each department of your business.
Windows 8 for Consumers
While enterprise use is directed towards productivity, consumer use is more for fun and simplicity. Windows 8 does a great job of that as is, if you can get accustomed to the metro interface. Full screen apps in Windows 8 are cool, and the new apps in the Microsoft Windows 8 store, along with more Xbox compatibility, makes for a more fun PC consumer experience!
Should You update to Windows 8
As mentioned, the best way to go about Windows 8 updating is to try the free Release Preview first, then decide. However, I would recommend that you don’t use the new OS for a few days and then disregard it as being too different. Use Windows 8 for a month or so, then try out Windows 7. Which one do you prefer at that point? Remember, Windows 8 is only priced at $40.00 USD for an upgrade.
I believe that Microsoft has been bold in creating an OS like Windows 8. They have decided to make a major move and to do something different with this OS. I will be updating all of my PCs to Windows 8 because I like the new improvements that Windows 8 offers throughout, such as the new Windows Explorer Ribbon and the speed of the OS.
Even if you can’t stand the new Metro Interface, you can simply disable it using some online tutorials or regain the traditional Start Menu. From there, you can utilize the other updates to Windows that you may like, such as the new Windows Explorer, instant-boot and other technologies, while not being bothered by the Metro UI.
