How To Check If A File Is Malicious Or Not On Windows 11/10

Third-party programs are widely used on Windows and other operating systems. But, how can you tell if a program is safe to install or not? How can you be so sure that the program file you are going to run on your system, contains no virus? As attackers use program (exe) files to inject different types of malware and viruses and attack your system, it is critical to ensure you are installing a safe program. In this guide, we will be discussing some tips to check if a file is malicious or not.

How to check if a file is malicious

Here are the ways to check a program file for virus before installing it on your PC:

Basic steps

Get it scanned with an Online Malware Scanner

Check for Verified Publisher

Verify File Integrity with Hash Value

Use the Windows Sandbox feature.

Now, let’s check out these in detail.

1] Basic steps

A file may show the icon of a, say, Word document and display the name as, say, File.docx. But do not get fooled by the file icon, the name, or the “file extension part” you may see. First, make Windows show the file extension and only then check the file extension. If the mentioned file chúng tôi was a disguised malware file, don’t be surprised if its name now appears as File.docx.exe! Such disguised files have a high probability of being malicious.

Next, check it is in the location it is meant to be or not. Windows OS files are located in the System32 folder typically. If a file has a name similar to a legit Windows file but is located elsewhere, it could be a virus.

If you have a 3rd-party antivirus software installed, you could scan it using your context menu too. You can check the report and take a decision accordingly.

Read: Precautions required to protect your Windows computer.

3] Get it scanned with an Online Malware Scanner

When you need a second opinion about a file that you think is malware, then online Malware scanners come in handy. And it is even better if the online scanner uses multiple antiviruses to scan a file.

Jotti Malware Scanner and Virustotal are among the best free online malware scanners to detect files and URLs for malware. They use multiple antivirus engines to analyze and scan files for malware.

As you upload the file, it will start analyzing it with different antivirus engines. The scan will run for a few seconds or minutes (depending upon file size) and when it is done, you will see reports from various antivirus engines. If it is all Green, you can go on with installing the program on your PC.

But, if it shows malicious content status in Red, you should probably not install it on your system.

Read: Test if Antivirus is working or not.

4] Check for Verified Publisher

Always check if you are installing software from a verified publisher. It can be Microsoft or any other major and known company. If it is from a popular brand, install it. Else, I would recommend not to install it on your PC.

Also, make sure you download a program from its official website only. Avoid downloading files from unknown and other platforms.

5] Verify File Integrity with Hash Value

A lot of software brands provide the hash values of their program files on their official website.

You can check this value with a File Integrity & Checksum Checker. If the hash value varies, the file is modified and there are higher chances that it contains malicious code. You can avoid installing it on your PC.

6] Use Windows Sandbox feature

If you use Windows 11/10 Pro or Windows 11/10 Enterprise Editions, you can use the Windows Sandbox feature to check whether a program is malicious or not.

Simply run Windows Sandbox and copy and paste your program file to it. After that, run the program and analyze its behavior. If it is running smoothly, it is most probably safe. If you see suspicious behavior, then avoid installing it to your actual system. This post will whos you how to enable Windows Sandbox in Windows 11/10 Home.

How do I know if a file has malware?

Alternatively, if you have antimalware software, you can use it to scan the file. In this article, we have described some effective ways to check whether or not a file is infectious.

How do I check if a file is safe?

There are many online virus scanners that let you scan your files for viruses, malware, and other security threats. These platforms have a limit to scanning files for free. Alternatively, you can also check a file certificate in its Properties. If you have antivirus software, you can also use it to scan files for viruses. However, antivirus software automatically scans the files you download from the internet and alerts you if a threat is detected.

How do I scan for malicious files?

You can use your antivirus or antimalware software to scan for malicious files. Windows Defender is an excellent antivirus that is available for free for all Windows users. If you do not have a third-party antivirus, you can scan your files either with Windows Defender or with free online virus scanner platforms.

If the System Maintenance Troubleshooter fails to fix the problem, you can run File and Folder Troubleshooter. The File and Folder Troubleshooter will help you fix Explorer problems.

2] Repair corrupt system image files

If the system image files of your system are corrupted, you will experience several kinds of issues like this one. We suggest you run the System File Checker utility to repair the corrupted system files. Running this tool is easy, You just have to execute the following command in the Administrator Command Prompt.

sfc /scannow 3] Clear File Explorer history

A lot of users have confirmed that clearing the File Explorer history fixed their problem. You should also try this. This action will also delete your recent items from Quick Access. The steps to do that are provided below:

Open File Explorer.

Open Folder Options. The steps to open Folder Options are different for Windows 10 and Windows 11 due to a change in UI.

Select the General tab.

Close and open File Explorer again.

This should fix the issue. If not, try the next potential fix.

4] Open File Explorer to This PC

Change your File Explorer settings. Make it open to This PC instead of Quick Access. The following instructions will help you with that.

Open File Explorer.

Now, open Folder Options by following the steps described in the previous fix.

6] Update or reinstall your display driver

Sometimes, a corrupted display driver also causes problems. Open the Optional Updates page in Windows Update and see if an update for your display driver is available there or not. If yes, install the update. If the update is not available there or if updating the display driver does not fix the problem, uninstalling and reinstalling it can help. Follow the steps below:

Download the latest version of your display driver from the manufacturer’s website.

Open the Device Manager.

Now, run the installer file that you have downloaded from the manufacturer’s website to install the display driver manually.

Now, check if the problem persists.

7] Troubleshoot in a Clean Boot state

If the problem still persists, there might be a startup app causing the problem. To check this, troubleshoot your system in a Clean Boot state. When you start your system in a Clean Boot state, all the startup programs remain disabled except the essential services and apps. Now, open the File Explorer and see if it crashes in the Clean Boot state. If not, you have to identify the problematic startup app.

To identify the culprit program, enable some of the disabled programs and start your system in normal mode. See if the File Explorer crashes. If yes, one of the enabled startup apps is the culprit. Now, disable one of the startup apps and check if the problem disappears. repeat this process until you find the problematic app. Once you find it, uninstall it.

8] Repair Windows using Installation Media

If none of the above solutions fixed the problem, repair Windows using Installation Media.

Once you reach here in the terminal, you can use the del /F /Q command to delete the files forcefully. Once done, restart your PC, and let the system rebuild things.

How To Open Any File In Firefox With Rollapp File Opener

Download the

rollApp File Opener

from the Add-ons page.

Enter the log in credentials for your selected network and allow access to rollApp in the next page.

You should get a confirmation that your rollApp account is now linked to that service. In my case, I chose to connect my Dropbox account.

Note: The add-on might require you to allow pop-ups, in which case a tutorial on doing so will be available to you should your settings have pop-ups disabled.

It also works on other download links from any web page. Simply hover the mouse over the link and you should still get the same pop-up options.

Although using the add-on may seem simple enough, there are a few rules to remember. First, ensure that pop-up is enabled in Firefox, since links opened using this app need to do so in a new window. Second, when you go idle in your browser for 10 minutes, the add-on disconnects from your cloud storage account, in which case you would need to reconnect to continue using it.

If you don’t mind going through these steps, then rollApp File Opener will definitely save you more time next time you access files online. Although it’s not exactly as user friendly as one would want, it’s a doable process that ensures long term convenience and is definitely worth the effort.
