Suggested January 2024 What Causes Motion Sickness—And How To Avoid It
Back in the late 19th century, some thrill-seekers got their kicks by riding what was called a haunted swing. This appeared to be a normal room, furnished with a table, chairs, and, in at least one case, a piano, but there was a trick: Suspended from an iron beam across its middle were several seats on a swing, a bit like the pirate-ship-shaped gondolas found at modern carnivals. After making the seats sway to-and-fro as expected, an attendant would stop the swing and spin the entire room around the riders (all the furniture was bolted to the floor). Part of the crowd was delighted; the rest wanted to puke.
As one visitor to the 1894 Midwinter Fair in San Francisco put it: “Many persons were actually made sick by the illusion. I have met a number of gentlemen who said they could scarcely walk out of the building from dizziness and nausea.” What they were feeling was a form of motion sickness, brought on by the mismatch between the stillness of their seated bodies and the world whirling around them.
Symptoms and causes of motion sicknessThe two most prominent effects of motion sickness are nausea and vomiting. Queasy sensations usually come first, but it’s possible to have one without the other—some motion-sick people throw up without much warning. Symptoms also include feeling flushed (without any actual increase in body temperature), dizziness, disorientation, headaches, loss of appetite, lots of salivating, and cold sweats.
Generally speaking, there are two main ideas for how this illness arises: the “postural instability theory” and the “sensory conflict theory.” The first proposes that, as we lose control over our posture, as when at the mercy of a wave-rocked boat, we’ll get sick. The second, more often cited in medical research, explains that we become unwell because of the discrepancies between our sensory systems and our brains’ blueprints for how things ought to be. The haunted swing is a “classic example of sensory conflict,” says John Golding, a professor of applied psychology at the University of Westminster, in London, who has been studying motion sickness since the late 1980s.
[Related: How to fight motion sickness while gaming]
This is relevant for one important reason. Our brains are “like an archive,” able to “pick out and compare” what we’re experiencing now to past perceptions, says Behrang Keshavarz, who studies virtual reality and motion sickness as a senior scientist at the University Health Network’s KITE-Toronto Rehabilitation Institute in Canada. If our bodies’ sensations match each other—if the eyes and vestibular system line up—and our minds’ expectations follow along, great. If they’re slightly off, it’s probably fine. But when there are big differences in how they all sync up, the unpleasantries kick in. Surprisingly, the physical intensity of a movement doesn’t seem to influence the onset of this illness. “You don’t get horse-sick,” Golding says, no matter how vigorously the animal hoofs it. “You can get quite sick with more gentle types of motion.”
If we can become queasy so easily, is there an evolutionary explanation? It’s unclear, but some experts have proposed a “toxin theory” where “what we call motion sickness is simply the aberrant elicitation of a very ancient defense reflex,” Golding explains. Put another way, our dizzy brains think we’re being poisoned and force us to puke to expel the offending substance.
Some people are more susceptible to motion sickness than others. Golding’s research has found that those who experience migraines are more likely to experience the illness. There may be clues buried in our genetic material, but that research is in its early stages. One of the few DNA studies, conducted by genomics company 23andMe, identified at least 35 different genetic variants associated with car sickness. Golding likens this finding to the bell curve of height seen across human populations—there’s no one gene responsible for how tall we grow, but thousands of contributors.
Age and biological sex could play a role, too. Babies under a year old rarely get motion sickness, but incidence peaks around 8, then decreases into adulthood. That could be different for VIMS, where people older than 65 are more likely to feel sick in a driving simulator, for instance. Meanwhile, some studies indicate that female individuals tend to experience motion sickness more than male individuals. But Keshavarz, who is also an adjunct professor in the Toronto Metropolitan University’s psychology department, says his work and other experiments have failed to consistently find a sex difference.
Prevention and cures for motion sicknessThe best way to handle motion sickness is to avoid what causes it, whether that means avoiding boat rides if you get seasick or helicopter tours if you feel airsick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommend passengers stay hydrated in transit, have frequent light snacks, avoid smoking, limit alcohol or caffeine, sit at the front of a car or bus, pick a window seat, and lie down or close their eyes if possible.
[Related: Does ginger ale work for motion sickness?]
As a more general strategy, it helps to anticipate changes in motion. Being in control of the vehicle reduces the likelihood of motion sickness: Drivers are less likely to get sick than passengers, for example. Or focus on getting your bearings. “On the whole, if you can get a stable horizon view, you’re better off,” Golding says. (Reading a book or scrolling on a phone, on the other hand, can worsen things, because we’re shifting our eyes to stationary objects that don’t indicate we’re in motion.) Finally, some techniques can remove the trigger that is causing the sickness. As a rider of the haunted swing wrote in 1895, “The minute the eyes were shut the sensations vanished instantly.”
It’s possible to treat symptoms of motion sickness with medications like diphenhydramine (sold under the brand name Benadryl), dimenhydrinate (Dramamine), or scopolamine, but these can also cause unwanted drowsiness. Golding’s behavioral studies have also found that controlled breaths—when “you concentrate on keeping your breathing very, very regular”—can relieve motion sickness; it’s about half as effective as medication, though without any side effects. And while there’s not much evidence that acupressure bands actually prevent nausea, wearing one on the wrist could provide psychological relief, Golding adds. “Placebo effects can be quite strong.”
Keshavarz has studied whether pleasant scents or sounds can reduce VIMS, and has found that listening to a favorite genre of music can be helpful in some circumstances. He’s currently examining whether changes to body temperatures have an effect, based on previous experiments with increased airflow exposure. “My hypothesis is that it cools the body and makes you feel better,” he says, counteracting the sensation of being flushed. But, overall, Keshavarz expects motion sickness to remain a problem as our dependency on technology grows. With driverless cars, self-driving air taxis, and shiny new VR products coming down the pike, it could mean more opportunities to lose our lunches.

What Is Ai Bias In The Healthcare And How To Avoid It In 2023
As the benefits of AI are being recognized by business leaders around the world, investments in AI solutions rise. The global market is projected to reach $126 billion by 2025 (see Figure 1). However, like every other technology, people have concerns over the implementation of AI and have trust issues regarding the fact that it can inherit bias from its training data.
An AI model is considered biased when it generates an erroneous or biased output based on insufficient or poor model training. To learn more about AI bias, check out this comprehensive article. Implementing AI can be expensive. Therefore, it is important for business leaders to understand the technology and the concerns associated with it. This is especially true in the healthcare sector.
This article explores AI bias in the healthcare sector to guide healthcare institutions/facilities for their future investments in the technology.
Figure 1. AI software market growth from 2023 to 2025Source: Statista
What does AI bias mean for healthcare?AI is improving various areas in healthcare, including surgery, radiology, pathology, etc. While AI bias can only cause inefficiencies in an industry such as manufacturing, it can have dangerous consequences in the healthcare sector. For example, a biased result generated from an AI-enabled computer vision system for radiology can lead to an incorrect diagnosis. This can pose a serious risk for patients.
How does AI bias happen in healthcare? Here is a simple example of AI bias in Alzheimer’s diagnosis (See Figure 2):
Gathering Training Data: The data gathered for training is biased and covers a limited range of patients.
Application: When applied to the real population with a wider range of patient types, the AI model erroneously classifies some population that was not available in the training data as unknown.
Figure 2. AI bias in Alzheimer’s diagnosis What are the types of biases in healthcare? The initial step is understanding the sources of the data and which biases can be present there. The following types of biases can be found in training data:
How to avoid AI bias?A completely unbiased AI is not possible in the current world. However, steps can be taken to improve the quality and range of the data to reduce bias.
The following points can help reduce AI bias:
At the development stage, business leaders must gather a team of AI developers from multiple backgrounds. This can help widen the horizon of the development process.
At an industrial level, there is a need for regulatory action by government and academic bodies to ensure that AI development in the healthcare sector is unbiased and fair.
In the healthcare sector, the availability of high-quality data is a challenge due to its sensitive nature. Work needs to be done to ensure that enough medical data is available for training a robust and fair AI model.
A data-centric approach to AI development can help address biases in AI systems.
Check our comprehensive list of actions you can take to reduce biases in your AI systems.

What Is Private Dns And How To Use It
If you’re concerned about your online privacy, private DNS can help. It lets you send network data to a custom, secure DNS server and encrypt those queries. Here’s how it works and how to set it up.
What Is DNS?Before we look at private DNS, we should do a brief review of DNS itself.
Table of Contents
The Domain Name System (DNS) converts human-friendly web addresses into the IP addresses computers use to communicate.
Generally, a DNS server will perform the translation from URL to IP. This process is called a DNS transaction, and these occur every time you visit a website, use particular applications, or communicate over specific platforms.
These transactions, like the domain names, are unencrypted. This means that operators and others can easily see and log them, which can be problematic when the information is a security or privacy risk. There aren’t any privacy mechanisms to protect the transactions’ confidentiality.
Further, it can make you susceptible to particular forms of malicious cyberattacks (like man-in-the-middle attacks).
What Is Private DNS Mode?Private DNS uses a different protocol called DNS over TLS (Transport Layer Security) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) to encrypt any DNS queries sent out. DNS used over these protocols are called DoH (DNS over HTTPS) and DoT (DNS over TLS).
Many malware, ransomware, and data theft attacks rely on DNS security weaknesses. This is where private DNS comes in. DoT and DoH encrypt the communication between your network and the DNS server and prevent third parties from intercepting the data.
How Do You Enable Private DNS?The process will differ depending on your device/platform. To enable private DNS, you need to configure a DNS address on your device and have access to a third-party DNS server that includes DoT or DoH functionality.
Cloudflare offers a free private DNS service at 1.1.1.1 or 1.0.0.1 but logs some information. This DNS resolver is entirely free. Other free DNS options include OpenDNS, 1.1.1.1 with Warp, and Google.
How to Enable Private DNS on Windows 10To use private DNS on Windows 10, follow the steps below:
Press Windows + I to open Settings.
Select Network & Internet.
Select Network and Sharing Center under Advanced network settings.
Select Change Adaptor Settings from the left-hand menu.
Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) from the list and select Properties.
Select Use the following DNS server addresses and enter your preferred DNS address.
How to Enable Private DNS on AndroidGoogle introduced support for DNS over TLS in Android 9, allowing you to use private DNS on your phone. To do this, you must have access to a private DNS server. Go to Settings.
Open Settings.
Select Private DNS.
Select Private DNS provider hostname.
Enter the address of the private DNS service you wish to use.
Note: If you’re using CloudFlare, the URL will be chúng tôi .
How to Enable Private DNS on a MacTo enable private DNS on a Mac, do the following:
Select the Apple menu.
Enter the IPv4 or IPv6 address for the DNS server you want to use.
Select OK.
How to Enable Private DNS on an iPhoneTo use encrypted DNS on an iPhone, follow the steps below:
Scroll down and select Configure DNS.
Select Manual.
Enter the address of the private DNS service you wish to use.
CloudFlare’s 1.1.1.1: Faster & Safer Internet AppYou also can automatically set up a private DNS server on your Android or iPhone.
Check and Validate the DNS after SetupSetting up a private DNS is not necessarily secure by itself. Once you’ve set up an alternate DNS address, it’s essential to check it to ensure your connection is safe. You can use several online tools to do this, including Cloudfare’s own security check tool.
This will double-check that your DNS queries are encrypted, whether your browser supports encrypted Server Name Indication (SNI), whether your DNS resolver is using Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), and which version of TLS is being used.
Internet PrivacyPublic DNS is one of the most significant security concerns on the internet, and configuring private DNS can protect you and your devices from malicious actors on the internet.
What Is Instagram Reels And How To Get It?
In a bid to fill the gap left by TikTok, while countries decide on its fate, Facebook-owned Instagram is launching a new feature called ‘Instagram Reels’. The feature will be available within the Instagram app itself. Instagram is banking on its millions of users, plus those that have converted from TikTok, to make the new feature an instant hit.
What is Instagram Reels?
Well, there’s no two ways about it. TikTok is in trouble, and its users are defecting to other apps. In the wake of this turmoil, Instagram is stepping up its game to bring users a place to create short videos, in a TikTok like fashion.
Instagram Reels will be added as a function within the Instagram app itself, so users will not need to download any other app. The function will be available on the camera page of the app. Users will be able to create short videos up to 15 seconds in length. Reels also lets you choose the length of the video beforehand, eliminating the need to trim it down later.
Like other apps in its genre, Reels comes loaded with a music library and customization in the way of stickers and filters.

How to access Instagram Reels
Instagram is adding this new feature to the camera page in the app. It will be in line with other previous features like Boomerang, Live, and Superzoom. To access Reels, simply launch the Instagram app and swipe right. This is will bring you to the camera tab.
Now, using the bottom panel, scroll to ‘Reels’. It should be between ‘Create’ and ‘Normal’.

How to create Instagram Reels
To create a Reel, open the Instagram app, and then tap the camera button in the top right. Now, tap REELS at the bottom of the screen.
Now, you can record a 15-second video of your Reel. You can also upload a video from your device’s storage (gallery/camera roll), and it could be multiple separate clips adding up to maximum 15 seconds. Tap the arrow button when done with adding effects, text, and other stuff. You also use the timer feature.
Add the hashtags and caption, and then tap the Share button to share the Reel to both in Explore and your feed. To disable sharing in feed, unselect the ‘Also Share to Feed’ checkbox.
You can also share a Reel as a DM or story.
Related: Do Instagram Reels Disappear?
How to watch Reels
It’s simple. Open the Instagram app and then tap the Explore button in the bottom row — it’s a search icon, second from the left. Now, you have a collection of photos and all, including Reels, as selected for you by the app’s AI. On the Reels posts, you will see a video icon.
Tap on the Reels post to view it. Now, just swipe up to check out next Reel, and so one. Swiping down will get you the previous Reel. It’s TikTok-like, yes.
Where do your Reels go?
Instagram will be adding a new tab to your profile page, to better display your Reel videos. When you create and post a video using Instagram Reels, your video will be accessible from your profile page.
The new tab will be added between your Feed and Tagged images. This shows how confident Instagram is that the new feature will take off. This is the first major redesign of the app in quite a long time. To view all your Reels, go to your profile and tap on the new ‘Reels’ tab.
Instagram Reels vs. TikTok
Let’s talk about some of the similarities and differences when it comes to these two apps. One of the biggest similarities is the fact that both these apps allow you to create short videos. They have a time restriction on the length of the videos that you can post. While TikTok had two preset options (15 seconds and 60 seconds), Instagram Reels lets you adjust a timer to stop your video anywhere within 15 seconds.
While editing a video, both TikTok and Reels do not let you delete individual clips within a video. So if you want to delete a certain clip in the middle of your video, you will have to delete all clips that were added after it.
When it comes to effects and filters, few apps can rival TikTok and Instagram is not one of those. TikTok’s huge gallery of effects easily dwarfs that of Instagram. But if Instagram plans on opening its doors to user-created effects (like it did with Stories), it should be able to bridge that gap.
One big difference is the way you can edit the videos once they are shot. While TikTok allows you to add filters to any part of the video, Reels only lets you add a single filter to the whole video.
Another difference is actually based on how the two apps operate. While Instagram has a few ways to post content (Feed, Stories, DM), TikTok had but one. So when you go to post a Reels video, you can choose where you want to post it; your Instagram Feed, Explore tab, Story, or DM. Unsurprisingly, TikTok only posts the video to your account.

Battlefield 1 is a popular WW1-themed first-person shooter developed by EA DICE and distributed by Electronic Arts. But don’t get fooled by its name, as it’s far from being the first game of the long Battlefield series. It’s actually the 15th installment.
The game received a lot of positive reviews, and was generally well-received, compared to the previous titles in the series. It sold over 15 million copies, which is outstanding considering the game was released in 2023.
Battlefield 1 caters to the needs of both single-player and multi-player enthusiasts. If you’ve never played in multi-player and plan to never do it, then you can skip this article altogether.
Mainly because packet loss, one of the most annoying issues you can encounter in online games, doesn’t affect the game in single-player. But first, let’s discover a bunch of things about this dreaded packet loss.
What does packet loss mean in Battlefield 1?Packet loss generally means the same thing, regardless of where you encounter it.
More often than not, packet loss is caused by network congestion. Thus, it can occur suddenly and disappear just as quickly before you even notice it.
However, sometimes, losing packets can be caused by faulty hardware/software components, improper network routing, DDoS attacks, or even server-side faults. And that’s when you can step in and try to fix it.
How to test for packet loss for Battlefield 1?
Press the Win key on your keyboard
Type CMD
Go to the Pingtestlive website
Note the IP address of the server you’re interested in
In the CMD window, type pathping chúng tôi (xx.xx = the IP address of the server)
Wait for the test to complete
Check if there’s any packet loss between the source (you) and the server
Long story short, as the connection gets further away from you, your ping will increase. But that doesn’t mean packet loss is a must. So be careful and check every hop thoroughly.
How to fix Battlefield 1 packet loss? 1. Use a VPN
Download Private Internet Access on your PC
Install it
Launch it and log into your PIA account
Connect to the server of your choice
Repeat the packet loss test above
Launch Battlefield 1 and check if the problem still persists
You can perform either one of the last two steps since they’re meant to show the same thing: if packet loss still occurs. Note that using a VPN won’t work if you lose packets on your end, or if the Battlefield 1 server experiences issues.
Private Internet Access
Losing packets in Battlefield 1? PIA could help you fix that.
$2.85/mo. Buy it now
Therefore, the only way using a VPN might work is if the leak happens on your ISP’s side.
Private Internet Access is a great all-round VPN tool from Kape Technologies. It can help you not only bypass packet loss, but also protect your privacy, secure your connection, and even bypass geoblocking. Additionally, it offers 24/7 live chat support.
2. Troubleshoot the connection manually
Run the packet loss test as described above
Locate the hop or hops where the packet leaks occur
Depending on your test results, take any of the following actions:
Check/repair/replace/update/upgrade any faulty components on your end (PC, router, cables)
Call your ISP and ask the support team to look into the issue
Ask your ISP to connect the network distribution company if the issue is on their end
Contact Electronic Arts’ support team and inform them of your findings
As we’ve mentioned above, network congestion is usually the culprit. Therefore, the best fix, in this case, would be waiting around for the issue to pass. Maybe don’t log in at peak hours.
Battlefield 1 packet loss usually passes by itselfSince it’s a quite popular game (world-wide), you can expect a lot of players to log into the game at any hour of the day. If you experience packet loss, you might want to check whether the problem is on your side, or on your ISP’s.
Last, but not least, you should consider investing in a trustworthy VPN. Even if it won’t solve your packet loss crisis every time, it can still help you bypass geo-restrictions, safe-keep your privacy, and secure your connection.
Your connection is not secure – websites you visit can find out your details:
Use a VPN to protect your privacy and secure your connection.
We recommend Visit Private Internet Access
We recommend Private Internet Access , a VPN with a no-log policy, open source code, ad blocking and much more; now 79% off.

Android 9 Pie Feature Flags: What Is It And How To Enable It
Mobile devices have sure come a long way from what they were initially intended to offer – means to communicate on the go with no strings attached. Today, smartphones are the most personal form of technology that you can find on the face of this planet, and thanks to the innovation brought forward by Android OS in the past few years, we’ve been able to do a whole lot more than just call and text.
What inspired Android 9 Pie update?
With the release of Android 9 Pie, Google is stepping up its game one more time to bring you a suite of features that not only boost the overall productivity but offer something new altogether. Apart from all of the obvious changes in the latest version of Android, there are some hidden gems in there too, one of them being the Feature Flags menu that has been tucked away in the Developer Options.
What are Feature Flags?
If you’ve been using the Google Chrome browser long enough, you should be familiar with the fact that a bunch of experimental features is packed into the Chrome Flags menu. Google is trying to do somewhat of a similar thing with the Android 9 Pie update as well, by bringing in an entire menu of experimental features under the wing of Feature Flags.
How to enable Feature Flags?
The Feature Flags menu is a part of the Developer Options of the Android 9 Pie system, so you will need to enable the Developer Options before you can proceed any further.
Head over to the Settings app of your Android device.
Scroll down to find the System menu and then select About phone.
Head below to find the Build Number section and tap on it 7 times.
You should see the message ‘You are now a developer’ pop up.
Related: Expected Android 9 release for Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Huawei, and other devices
Now that you have the Developer Options enabled from the Settings, you will be able to access it and then activate the Feature Flags as well.
Head over to the Settings app of your Android device.
Go down to find the System option.
Find the Developer Options menu, head down to find the Feature Flags.
Trying out the Feature Flags options
At the moment, the list of features that you can experiment within the Feature Flags menu is strictly limited. However, you can expect the list of features to grow substantially as newer updates are released for the eligible devices soon enough.
settings_about_phone_v2: Enabling this Feature Flag moves the ‘About phone’ section to the top of the System This also changes the UI of the entire About phone section from the inside.
settings_bluetooth_while_driving: When enabled, you will be able to see an option called ‘Use Bluetooth when driving’ under the ‘Connected devices’
settings_data_usage_v2: There’s not much information yet on what this Feature Flag does when enabled or disabled.
settings_audio_switcher: There’s not much information yet on what this Feature Flag does when enabled or disabled.
settings_systemui_theme: There’s not much information yet on what this Feature Flag does when enabled or disabled.
settings_zone_picker_v2: This Feature Flag gives you a better insight into the ‘Automatic time zone’ option in the ‘Date & time’ menu of the Settings app.
settings_battery_display_app_list: Enabling this Feature Flag offers you a detailed list of the ‘App usage since full charge’ right in the Battery menu of the Settings app.
What is the purpose of Feature Flags?
Probably the most revered feature in the Google Android ecosystem is the stock feel that comes with it. Google has maintained this for years, but with the addition of Featured Flags, you can expect the inclusion of additional ways for users to change the functionality, look and feel of the system from a single menu.
Although the number of options available under the Feature Flags is considerably limited right now, it would not be altogether surprising to see the list to grow out as large as the Chrome Flags we see in the mobile browser. We’ll be updating the Featured Flags list of commands as they come out with each update pushed out by Google.
