Education has always been a reflection of broader cultural values. As such, the roles of teachers and students have evolved as our models of education have moved from one iteration to another. Teachers who once traveled to town to instruct a heterogeneous room full of passive learners on matters of rote memorization have come to adopt new roles and philosophies toward learning. As these new models have emerged, educators have been required to hone their skills and adapt to ever changing sets of priorities, needs and expectations.
Where such trainings were once the sole responsibility of state and district organizations, many teachers are now seeing the value of venturing out to amalgamate their own professional learning experiences. While no two paths are the same, there are four components of effective do-it-yourself (DIY) professional development that all educational professionals should consider.
TwitterTwitter is a microblogging platform that allows users to publish posts of 140 characters or less in length. Educators the world over have adopted this social network as an always-open staff lounge where ideas, best practices and resources are shared with one another in the context of a professional learning network. In Why Teachers Should Try Twitter, William Ferriter shares his reason for taking his professional development to the network:
Though these may be Ferriter’s own words, the attitude expressed in them about leveraging Twitter for differentiated professional development is shared by many who have Tweeted and been Tweeted back at.
Blogs
In addition to Twitter, educators are making blogs an integral part of their DIY professional development. While many enjoy reading what others have written, writing your own reflective blog posts is a highly effective technique to improving your instructional practices. In their Teacher Evaluation Model, the Marzano Research Institute identifies reflecting on teaching as “a vital meta-cognitive step in teacher development.” What you post at first doesn’t really matter. The practice of consciously reflecting on your classroom practices and documenting what you are learning does matter. There are a number of platforms that teachers are choosing to host their professional blogs, Edublogs, Weebly, Blogger and WordPress being the most popular among them.
Edcamps
Edcamps are cropping up across the country. Depending on where you live, you might have already attended one yourself. If not, it is quite likely that you have at least heard about the edcamp movement. Edcamps are a type of teacher-organized unconference that allows educators to get together, often for only a day, to engage in discussion-based professional learning. What makes edcamps really unique is that there are no planned sessions at the beginning of the event. Attendees gather in the morning to suggest topics and offer to facilitate sessions, which are then displayed on a large schedule board for others to view and attend. Tom Whitby writes in What Makes Edcamp Popular with Teachers that “Edcamp’s success is based on trust and respect, as well as a personal drive for professional development.” While these often take place on a Saturday, those who attend are there not because they need professional development credits, but because they want to learn.
Hangouts
Google+ is quickly finding itself the host of burgeoning community of educators as well. As on Twitter, users are sharing content and ideas with one another in a professional learning network. Additionally, they are utilizing Google’s social networking platform to Hangout. A Google Hangout is a video conference with the potential to broadcast up to ten people at a time. For innovative educators, this technology has opened up a number of opportunities to connect and grow together. Whether participating in a distance-based book study, hosting a weekly educational podcast, or simply logging on to talk informally with a few friends about what’s going on in your classrooms and schools, Google Hangouts is providing teachers with a way to connect instantly with other do-it-yourselfers. This past January, Google Hangouts even served as the platform for the first entirely online Edcamp, Edcamp Home, which allowed ambitious educators from all around the world to experience the unconference from the comfort of their couches.
At the heart of any approach to professional development is an attitude about how, when and where we learn best. In today’s educational ecosystem, the answers to these questions can largely be found online. While Twitter, blogs, edcamps and Hangouts aren’t all that should be included in a comprehensive professional development plan, the learning experiences and opportunities enabled by utilizing them far outweigh the takeaways from a district in-service training. This might be due to the nature of the teacher-generated interactions, the opportunity for knowledge construction, or even the access to educational experts and thought leaders. Regardless, the emergence of DIY professional development isn’t a fad or a passing trend. It’s a reflection of our culture, one that will see more innovation in education during the next ten years than it has seen in the past hundred.

Fashion Nerd: A Whole New Kind Of Diy
In only four short years since graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, fashion designer and self-proclaimed nerd Diana Eng has appeared on the hit game show Project Runway, co-founded the Brooklyn-based hacker collective NYC Resistor, and studied biomimetics at the University of Bath in the UK. Now Eng has released her first book, a DIY style manual called Fashion Geek. chúng tôi sat down with Eng to talk about the intersection of fashion and technology, the future of interactive clothing, and the difference between “nerds” and “geeks.”
Diana Eng: Originally, I wanted to be a mathematician. I was a huge science nerd, I did international science competitions, and I was sure I was going that way. But I found myself drawing in calculus class more than I was paying attention; so I figured I should probably go into art instead. Besides, there’s a lot of math in fashion. Trends are just statistics. Style is just proportion.
DE: I used to make a lot of knitting patterns based on math. I guess I still do. I did some stuff with the Fibonacci sequence, and I thought it might work with random numbers. But the random numbers just looked ugly. It was the Fibonacci sequence that made it look good, which I thought was really cool. And there was a lot of engineering when I worked Victoria’s Secret.
DE: We were creating new technology for bras. Bras are very complicated. Sportswear has maybe 15 different components, and a bra has maybe 30. It has to perform all the time. Breasts can weigh as much as 20 pounds, and a bra has to hold its shape and survive in the washer. We were looking at new materials, and structural changes.
DE: Conductive thread. That’s made a huge difference. Before, it was “Oh, where do I hide the wire?” And with wires, sometimes the voltage gets too high to do what you want to do. That’s tough; it’s bad to electrocute the model. Conductive thread lets you do what you want. Also, button switches, so electronics can be turned on or off by opening and closing a jacket.
DE: I’d really like to experiment with different chemicals. I guess conductive ink is a chemical, but there’s so much more. In Japan, they have these vitamin shirts. Rather than taking a pill, you wear this shirt that is fortified with vitamins that you absorb through your skin.
DE: I’m really going after the young girl demographic. One of the things that got me out of wanting to go into math was when my dad took me to a math conference, and I didn’t see anyone like me. Girls don’t see that you don’t have to be a stereotypical nerd if you major in computer science. Makeup companies always need chemists. A lot of girls I knew growing up really liked makeup. If they knew that they could design makeup all day, they would have paid more attention in chemistry class.
DE: I actually tried to persuade them to call the book “Fashion Nerd”, but the publishers told me that “geek” is cool, but “nerd” isn’t. Being a geek is definitely cool now, though. The big thing was the iPod. Apple made the Shuffle an accessory, and now its fashionable to have an iPhone. I used to not be able to dress myself, and I had several big makeovers in college. But I still used to go to fashion events and be the only person there with glasses. Now I have hipster friends who wear glasses as accessories. I’m like “Why are you wearing those? You can see fine!” [laughs]
DE: I’m not a hipster. I’m not wearing the right boots! [laughs]
DE: Buy a voltmeter. A lot of times electronics don’t work, and you want to be able to measure them. Things go wrong all the time, and you need to know why.
Diana Eng’s new book is Fashion Geek, is available from North Light Books.

Components of time series analysisNow that we already know that arrangement of data points in agreement to the chronological order of occurrence is known as a time series. And also, the time series analysis is the relationship between 2 variables out of which one is the time and the other is the quantitative variable. There are varied uses of time series, which we will just glance at before we know the components of the time series analysis so that while we study the time series, it becomes evident on to how the components is able to solve the time series analysis.
Time series analysis is performed to predict the future behavior of any quantitative variable on the basis of the past behavior. For example, umbrellas getting sold on mostly rainy seasons than other seasons, although umbrellas still get sold in other time periods. So maybe in order to predict the future behavior, more umbrellas will be sold during the rainy seasons!
While evaluating the performance of the business with respect to the expected or planed one, time series analysis helps a great deal in order to take informed decisions to make it better.
Time series also enables business analysts to compare changes in different values at different times or places.
1. Long term movements or TrendThis component looks into the movement of attributes at a long-term window of time frame and mostly tries to understand the increment or decrement of the quantitative value that is attached to the behavior. This is more like an average tendency of the parameter that is in measurement. The tendencies that are observed can be increasing, decreasing or stable at different sections of the time period. And on this basis, we can make the trend a linear one and a non-linear one. In the linear trend we just talk about continuously increasing or continuously decreasing whereas in the non-linear we can segment the time period into different frames and populate the trend! There are many ways by which non-linear trends can be included in the analysis. We can either take higher order of the variable in hand, which is realistically non-interpretable or a better approach than that is the piecewise specification of the function, where each of the piecewise function has a linear and collectively makes a non-linear trend at an overall level.
2. Short term movementsIn contrast to the long-term movements, this component looks into the shorter period of time to get the behavior of the quantitative variable during this time frame. This movement in the time series sometimes repeats itself over certain period of time or even in regular spasmodic manner. These movements over a shorter time frame give rise to 2 sub-components namely,
Seasonality: These are the variations that are seen in the variable in study for the forces than spans over for lesser than a year. These movements are mainly present in the data where the record in with a shorter duration of difference, like daily, weekly, monthly. The example we talked about the sale of umbrella is more during the rainy season is a case of seasonality. Sale of ACs during the summertime is again a seasonality effect. There are some man-made conventions that affect seasonality like festivals, occasions etc.
Cyclic Variations: Even though this component is a short-term movement analysis of time series, but it is rather longer than the seasonality, where the span of similar variations to be seen is more than a year. The completion of all the steps in that movement is crucial to say that the variation is a cyclic one. Sometimes we even refer them to as a business cycle. For example, the product lifecycle is a case of cycle variation, where a product goes through the steps of the life cycle, that is Introduction, growth, maturity, decline and just before the product reaches below a threshold of decline, we look for re-launch of the product with some newer features.
3. Irregular variation or Random variationsFinally, we now know that the Trend, seasonality, cyclic and residuals totally constitutes of the time series analysis and these components may take form of additive model or multiplicative model, depending on the use cases!
ConclusionWith this, we come to an end of the components of time series analysis article, where in we looked at each of these components in great details and got familiar with them before moving to the usage of these components in a time series analysis!

4 Best Sites To Find Professional Photos For Your Website
If you happen to be on the lookout for professional-looking photos and images that might help boost the appearance of your website, there are a lot of options to choose from throughout the internet. For example, if you have just finished creating your new website through a website builder, that website builder may also have a stock photo section for you to browse through, although this will depend on the website builder being used.
Whether your website is to show off a creative project, showcase a product or service, or perhaps even a blog about a specific hobby, the Adobe Stock website gives customers an amazing number of choices. The Adobe Stock website also offers customers ‘free stock assets’, as well as a wide variety of purchasable licenses for high-quality photos, videos, audio files, and even premium images. Adobe Stock is perhaps one of the most diverse providers.
Much like Adobe Stock, Getty Images is perhaps one of the most popular options for finding professional-looking photos for your website. Getty Images has a fantastic range of photos and images available for licensing, however, the prices featured on their website can be rather high, although the premium service and their high-quality images reflect this pricing.
Depending on your budget, their website also allows potential customers to sign-up to specific plans, each with different packages and prices, or the chance to purchase a license for individual photos, meaning their service can potentially cater to almost any wallet size.
Much like the previous websites mentioned here, Bigstock is another good site to find professional photos for your budding website. Bigstock may offer potential customers a more financially friendly price and service for their images and photos, providing flexible sign-ups and pricing fit for any budget. It also offers a free trial for one week.
Shuttershock is yet another reputable provider offering potential customers a wide variety of stock photos at reasonable prices. It is a great resource for finding professional-looking images that can help give your website the boosts it has been looking for. The Shutterstock website houses millions of images, and much like other sites it also provides a helpful and sophisticated search bar that can help you find the right image for your website. You can take Shutterstock’s free trial for one month and find that.
Shutterstock boasts a simple and easy download feature where you can find and purchase a license and download it to store locally on your device. It can be a good place to find licensed photos and images at reasonable prices and is another site that you might find some professional photos for your website without having to commit a lot of your funds.
Make sure you have the correct license and beware of copyright, so please exercise caution and check the type of license and copyright before use.
Most websites offering their photos, images, and other types of multimedia for purchase, download, and use should usually come with some sort of license agreement and license information.
A license agreement should detail the terms and conditions of use for photos, images, and potentially other multimedia, and will also usually detail situations where content cannot be used and is strictly prohibited from being used.
Some websites offering photos, images, and other types of multimedia might come with an easy-to-follow FAQ section for customers that can explain their own licensing and copyright policies, and these customer support sections should be quite easy to find and navigate.
This is not a comprehensive explanation of copyright and licensing, so you should conduct your own research before making a purchase.

Work Flow And Components Of Hive Architecture
Introduction To Hive Architecture
Hadoop, Data Science, Statistics & others
Hive Architecture with its componentsHive plays a major role in data analysis and business intelligence integration, and it supports file formats like text file, rc file. Hive uses a distributed system to process and execute queries, and the storage is eventually done on the disk and finally processed using a map-reduce framework. It resolves the optimization problem found under map-reduce and hive perform batch jobs which are clearly explained in the workflow. Here a meta store stores schema information. A framework called Apache Tez is designed for real-time queries performance.
The major components of the Hive are given below:
Hive clients
Hive Services
Hive storage (Meta storage)
The above diagram shows the architecture of the Hive and its component elements.
Hive Clients Hive ServicesTo process all the queries hive has various services. All the functions are easily defined by the user in the hive. Let’s see all those services in brief:
Command-line interface (User Interface): It enables interaction between the user and the hive, a default shell. It provides a GUI for executing hive command line and hive insight. We can also use web interfaces (HWI) to submit the queries and interactions with a web browser.
Hive Driver: It receives queries from different sources and clients like thrift server and does store and fetching on ODBC and JDBC driver which are automatically connected to the hive. This component does semantic analysis on seeing the tables from the metastore, which parses a query. The driver takes the help of compiler and performs functions like a parser, Planner, Execution of MapReduce jobs and optimizer.
Compiler: Parsing and semantic process of the query is done by the compiler. It converts the query into an abstract syntax tree and again back into DAG for compatibility. The optimizer, in turn, splits the available tasks. The job of the executor is to run the tasks and monitoring the pipeline schedule of the tasks.
Execution Engine: All the queries are processed by an execution engine. A DAG stage plans are executed by the engine and help in managing the dependencies between the available stages and execute them on a correct component.
Metastore: It acts as a central repository to store all the structured information of metadata also it’s an important aspect part for the hive as it has information like tables and partitioning details and the storage of HDFS files. In other words, we shall say metastore acts as a namespace for tables. Metastore is considered to be a separate database that is shared by other components too. Metastore has two pieces called service and backlog storage.
The hive data model is structured into Partitions, buckets, tables. All these can be filtered, have partition keys and to evaluate the query. Hive query works on the Hadoop framework, not on the traditional database. Hive server is an interface between a remote client queries to the hive. The execution engine is completely embedded in a hive server. You could find hive application in machine learning, business intelligence in the detection process.
Work Flow of HiveThe steps include:
execute the Query from UI
get a plan from the driver tasks DAG stages
get metadata request from the meta store
send metadata from the compiler
sending the plan back to the driver
Execute plan in the execution engine
fetching results for the appropriate user query
sending results bi-directionally
execution engine processing in HDFS with the map-reduce and fetch results from the data nodes created by the job tracker. it acts as a connector between Hive and Hadoop.
The job of the execution engine is to communicate with nodes to get the information stored in the table. Here SQL operations like create, drop, alter are performed to access the table.
ConclusionWe have gone through Hive Architecture and their working flow, hive basically performs petabyte amount of data, and hence it’s a data warehouse package on the Hadoop platform. As hive is a good choice for handling high data volume, it helps in data preparation with the guide of SQL interface to solve the MapReduce issues. Apache hive is an ETL tool to process structured data. Knowing the working of hive architecture helps corporate people to understand the principle working of the hive and has a good start with hive programming.
