In this tutorial, I’ll show you a very specific technique where you can show data or filter up to the current date (today) or any specific date in your Power BI reports. I’ve seen this asked a few times, especially on the Enterprise DNA Support Forum. I’ve personally used this technique many times, so I know that it’s both easy and useful. You may watch the full video of this tutorial at the bottom of this blog.
The reality is that the solution for this is much simpler than you may think. All you need to do is understand where the key locations are to set this up correctly.
Having a solid understanding of data modeling and why you need to set up your data model effectively is important here.
Sometimes, you may have calculations or a way of representing your data but they go out of the time range or time window that you want to highlight. To show a specific date or the current date in your Power BI report, you need to create a calculated column in your Date table, and then use it as a date filter to change the way a visualization represents data.
The data in this example shows results for every single day. You’ll see here though that my Date table goes all the way out until 2023. This would be very common if you’re using a Date table that has quite a wide range.
In this example, I wanted to have my Date slicer go up to the very last day of the data or today. So, I wrote a logic with a sort of date filter that will update daily. Whenever I look at this report, this will always represent the current date. I’ve created the formula within this column, which is inside my Date table.
I created a switch here, Is Before Today. This IF logic states that if the Date is less than or equal to Today then it’s equal to True and equal to False.
This is a very simple logic that is similar to what you would do in Excel. From here, I added this to my slicer, which then filters up to today.
Filtering up to the current date is made really easy in Power BI because all I needed to do was find the switch that I had just created, Is Before Today, and drag it into the filter area. I put it as a Page level filter here.
Then, I selected True because that logic is going to equal to true if the day is before today.
With that in the filters, you can see that the slicer is now showing the current date that I’m recording this, which is 18th of July 2023.
Now, the slicer only goes up to that particular date.
How to show current date in Power BI is a frequently asked question, which is why I decided to go over it in this tutorial.
What’s great about this technique is that you don’t need to update your Date table every single day. If you have a detailed and lengthy Date table, where you could go up to 2023 or even further, place the switch in your Date table. It enables you to place a filter on either a page or your entire report only up to the current date. This is a great time-saver for you.
This is a combination of visualization techniques with some simple DAX formula (in a calculated column). Once this has all been applied to your reports, you’ll likely see how seamlessly it while adding value to your visuals at the same time.

We’re once again done with another Power BI Challenge. Judging who the winner is has become more and more challenging as we see participants getting better and better with every round.
This challenge is about currency conversion. It involves a company that buys scrap and waste recyclables. Because the company deals with clients from all over the globe, it meant having to deal with a number of currencies.
Let’s see how our participants came up with a report for this scenario.

So far, we’ve succeeded in featuring different scenarios from different industries and fields every round. This has helped expose participants to various problems that they might encounter in the future.

This shows that if you really want to make serious progress as a Power BI user, it’s best to immerse yourself in these challenges and gain as much feedback as you can from the community.

Challenge #9 Results
This challenge was extremely challenging. Coming up with a winning report meant having to combine DAX, power query and visualizations just to deliver the insights required. The dataset really pushed the participants to apply different techniques and apply every bit of knowledge they had about Power BI.
We admit that sometimes, we become mesmerized with the technical details and analysis. But we also know that the winning report should not only amaze us with fancy tricks. It should also deliver exactly what is being asked for in the project brief.

The Google Pixel Fold will use the design style of the Pixel series. On the rear, this device will use the same long bar design with a small bulge just like the Pixel series. This device comes with three camera lenses on the bar. The frame is very round, and the grip should be more comfortable.
According to reports, the Pixel Fold’s three-camera sensors are a 64MP main camera (IMX787), a 10.8MP telephoto camera (S5K3J1), and a 12MP wide-angle camera (IMX386). At the same time, the outer screen uses a 5.8-inch OLED screen, and the inner screen is a 7.6-inch OLED screen. Both screens support a refresh rate of 120Hz.

Doom Eternal is first-person-shooter perfection. The 2023 title came from somewhere, though: one of the most important FPS series in the industry.
The Video-game series Doom started in 1993. The original title defined the FPS genre and inspired numerous studios, clones, and sub-genres.
Ever since, the saga has kept moving forward, pushing the genre’s envelope to deliver the best possible demon-slayer product.
So far, we’ve seen five main Doom games, which are the ones iD Software created. Also, there’re various bundles, third-party entries, expansions, and a VR title. The total is 16 Doom entries.
There’re five main games in the Doom series.
Id Software owns the Doom IP, and the studio has been at the helm of every title. Their formula is simple but effective. These are first-person shooters where you play as an ultimate badass. The “Doom Guy” is a space marine who “Fights Like Hell” for humanity.
The Slayer also has a sci-fi armor, the Praetor Suit. In some games, it can be upgraded to offer extra defensive, offensive, and mobility perks. Mobility is crucial on most Doom games: these titles are fast, chaotic, and furious. Players need to move fast and constantly swap their weapons to defeat the hellspawn.
Game design is linear, meaning you have to complete various levels. These levels function as mazes, with main areas, side areas, collectibles, and hidden secrets.
Overall, the Doom series comes in three parts. There’s the Classic Series (1993 – 1997), the Doom 3 era (2004 – 2012), and the rebooted series (2024 – ). Every main series game is available for modern consoles.
A core characteristic of Doom games is its heavy metal soundtrack. The original Doom premiered in an episodic matter. The first episode was shareware.
The original Doom debuted in 1993 for MS-DOS systems. Different editions and ports are available for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.
It was an FPS with early 3D graphics and 2D character models. An unnamed space marine ran through multiple military bases in Hell and bases on Mars’ moons. Each dungeon had various episodes, and the final area had a boss fight.
Moreover, playing through the levels required managing health, armor, and ammo. Enemies were tough, plentiful, and vicious. The arsenal included a pistol, a plasma rifle, a pistol, power-ups, and the mighty BFG 9000.
The plot was not as significant as the gameplay, but it was still there. The game had three episodes, and the lore came via short text segments between these episodes. After the “Doom Guy” assaulted a superior officer, he’s sent on a “suicide” mission to protect a combat force on various military bases.
Doom II was released for retail stores, unlike the original title.
Hell on Earth debuted for MS-DOS systems in 1994 and Macintosh PCs in 1995. Currently, you may find it on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, and Windows.
The gameplay had 32 levels, although two of these were secret levels. Players found twice as much enemy variety, multiple boss fights, and a wider arsenal. Particularly, Doom II introduced the iconic double-barreled shotgun.
As for the plot, Doom II follows the events of the first game. After the Slayer defeats the Spider Mastermind, new demons open a portal to Earth. Surviving humans escaped in massive spaceships, but demons overran the Earth’s last spaceports. The Space Marine is the only one capable of saving humanity from the hordes of Hell.
In 1995, iD Software released the first Doom II expansion. Master Levels brought 20 extra levels with increased challenge and enemy numbers compared to the base game.
The fourth episode of the original game premiered as a post-launch expansion. It’s available on the Ultimate Doom version and not in the original version. That said, Ultimate Doom is available on Steam for Windows consoles.
Thy Flesh Consumed premiered in 1995. It’s a Doom II prequel where the Slayer fights against a demon invasion to Earth. Id Software was developing the Quake series by the time, so third-party studios created the expansion. Gameplay-wise, the expansion is more challenging than the base game.
Lastly, Ultimate Doom is not open-code shareware anymore. It’s the retail re-release of the original game.
A third-party studio took care of Final Doom.
Modding group TeamTNT released Final Doom in 1996 under supervision by iD Software. The original developers were working on the Quake saga by the time.
Final Doom debuted for MS-DOS, Macintosh PCs, and PlayStation. It’s currently available on Nintendo Switch, PlaySation 4, and Xbox One.
The third-party title compiles two stand-alone episodes for Doom II. Each episode is a campaign on its own (Evilution and the Plutonmia Experiment). The first part is about avenging fallen comrades; the second part is about closing the gates of Hell.
There’re 32 levels in the game, and the story takes place after Doom II. Gameplay-wise, it’s almost the same as Doom II, although it’s more difficult than previous entries. For example, there’s no life regeneration in Final Doom.
Midway Studios created Doom 64. iD Software supervised the project.
Doom 64 debuted for Nintendo 64 in 1997. Bethesda released a remastered port in 2023, and it’s available for Windows, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Google Stadia, and Xbox One.
The story follows the Doom Guy after defeating the Hell invasion on Hearth. A new mission sends the space marine to a Union Aerospace Corporation base to hunt for a dangerous entity. The new enemy appears to have high radiation levels, corrupted tissue, and abilities to resurrect the dead.
However, this was all a plot to trap the Doom Guy in Hell. They thought they trapped the marine in the eternal fires, but in reality, they were trapped in the underworld with the Slayer. And so, the game ends with the Doom Guy deciding to stay in Hell forever, ensuring no demon rises again.
Doom 3 (DOOM) debuted in 2004 for Windows. Later on, it became available for Linux, macOS X, and Xbox. It’s the first reboot of the series, featuring a new story but similar lore and gameplay elements.
Doom 3 features a story-driven campaign with the main goal of defeating several enemies and reaching the exit points to complete levels. The game also features NPCs with key information, inventory items, and objectives.
The shooting is better than ever. There’re ten weapons available, which include the BFG 9000 and experimental plasma weapons. The enemy variety is wide, and they feature different abilities, weaknesses, and behaviors.
Also, the game uses horror elements to aim the series into a horror/survival setting. For example, players must choose between holding a flashlight or holding a weapon.
Lastly, Doom 3 has various 4-player multiplayer deathmatch modes. The community later modded the feature to allow up to 16 players.
The Xbox version of the expansion allows players to use both the flashlight and a weapon.
Resurrection of Evil is a Doom 3 expansion by Nerve Software. It debuted for Windows in 2005 and Xbox. Currently, it’s available for Windows as well.
The sequel features 12 single-player levels, six new enemies, and several new multiplayer maps. Also, it brings back the double-barreled shotgun from Doom II.
It also adds two features. The first one is the Ionized Plasma Levitator, a weapon that picks and moves certain items, as well as small projectiles. Interestingly, it’s quite similar to Half-Life 2’s Gravity Gun, and Valve’s game debuted in the same year.
The second feature is the Heart of Hell and the Bloodstone, demonic Artifacts with three abilities. These become available to the Slayer after defeating three bosses.
No Rest for the Living is the second expansion for Doom II. It premiered for Xbox 360 in 2010. Nerve Software creates the pack under iD Software supervision.
The expansion has 8 new levels and one secret level. It takes place after Doom II’s campaign, and it works as a homage to the original Doom.
The BFG Edition includes both the base game and the expansion.
The BFG Edition is a Doom 3 remaster. It debuted in 2012 for Windows, Xbox 360, and PS3. It’s also currently available for Windows.
BFG brings enhanced graphics, improved audio, extra horror sound effects, and checkpoints. Other additions include 3D display support and HDM support. Gameplay-wise, it also added the ability to use the flashlight and weapons at the same time.

Doom Classic Complete is a Doom bundle that originally debuted for PS3 in 2012. It’s currently available at Steam.
Master Levels for Doom II
Doom is the 2024 reboot of the series. iD Software is the sole developer, and Bethesda Softworks became the publisher this time around.
A new Doom Slayer comes back to fight against the forces of Hell. Demons and undead are attacking a UAC on their Mars facility. The Slayer must drive the hellspawn back to where they belong.
Doom 2024 features a character progression system, environmental traversal, enhanced mobility skills, and a wide arsenal. On top of that, it features multiple enemies, each one having weak spots, behaviors, and skills.
Also, the game introduced the “Glory Kills” system. After staggering an enemy with enough damage, the Slayer can kill it with a special melee action. A glory kill refills ammo.
Similarly, you can kill most weak enemies with a chainsaw or kill an injured strong enemy with the weapon. It restores ammo instead of health.
With these two features plus enhanced mobility, Doom became a frenetic micro-management of HP, Ammo, and chainsaw fuel. Aside from that, the graphics, soundtrack, and campaign were stellar, the best the series has ever been.
Doom VFR is an original canon story.
Doom VFR by iD Software it’s the first Doom VR title. It debuted in 2023 for Windows (Oculus Rift and HTC Vive) and PlayStation VR.
You don’t get to play as the Slayer, though. Instead, you play as a cybernetic survivor, a UAC soldier that fights a demon invasion of Mars. It’s a canon story that happens after Doom II.
The gameplay allows you to travel across the UAC facility, teleport, use a jet-strife, and use multiple weapons to fight. You’d have to customize the key binding to make it work for you, as the game is tough, and VR games can be clumsy.
After you tweak the controllers, it can be a great game, brutal and smooth. However, turning and moving in VR is challenging, and the Doom series requires fast mobility. If you already have a VR setup, and if you’re a Doom 2024, you should give it a try.
In 2023, Bethesda re-released Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 for iOS, Android Xbox One, PS4, Windows, and Nintendo Switch.
Doom Eternal debuted for PS4, Xbox One, Windows, and Google Stadia in 2023. There’s also an optimized version for new-gen consoles.
Doom Eternal perfected the Doom 2024 formula and added extra elements. For starters, most weapons have two variations and levels up in two different pathways. You’d need to use every weapon as each enemy features specific weaknesses.
Secondly, the Praetor Suit has several upgrades, perks that enhance grenades, the fire thrower, mobility, and more.
Thirdly, you can have three additional perks active at any time (runes). These are runes you find through exploration, and they greatly improve and change your gameplay style.
Aside from that, the game is a system that shows how the Doom Guy damages enemies. As you chip at the monster, you’ll see how their flesh, bones, and armor fall down.
The game is linear, but the maps are wide and full of secrets. One of these secrets is unlocking the full original Doom game. Speaking of which, the hub (The Fortress of Doom) has some secrets as well. It’s a place where you can unlock some weapons, skins, and upgrades.
Also, you can chill and hear the Doom soundtrack (which are collectibles) and choose to replay previous missions with or without cheat codes (collectibles as well). Better yet: you can go to the Slayer’s room and play the original Doom.
These elements, on top of multiple platforming sections, created the most frenetic shooter you can play. It’s fast, explosive, challenging, and tough to master. It’s also highly addictive.
The story picks up the Doom Guy on a mission to end Hell’s invasion of Earth. The Slayer foils the plans of the Maykr alien to exterminate humanity. At the same time, you uncover multiple lore elements. These include the Slayer’s background story, the divine Mayrk alien race, and more.
The game also includes a multiplayer mode, “Battlemode.” It delivers matches between a Doom Slayer and a demon.
The Ancient Gods don’t require the main game to work on PC.
Doom Eternal ends when the Slayer defeats the Icon of Sin, therefore halting Hell’s invasion on Earth.
The victory had a consequence, though. The Hell forces conquered Urdak, the heavens where the Maykr race resides. They needed Hell to succeed on Earth, as they used the energy created by suffering souls to power their technology.
The Slayer, alongside scientist Samuel Hayden and other allies, set out to save the divine race.
Gameplay-wise, the expansion plays across three levels and adds several new enemies.
The Ancient Gods Part II revealed the Slayer is a “Clone of God” created to kill the Dark Lord.
The Ancient Gods Part II debuted in 2023. It takes the Doom Slayer to Immora, the Hell capital, to defeat the Dark Lord in a final confrontation.
The setting opens up the craziest, most creative scenarios the series has ever seen. The Doom Slayer visits various planets and dimensions, meets several deities, and uncovers significant lore information.
The expansion features various new enemies, an excruciating final battle, a new weapon, and four levels.

I want to talk about the three main benefits of SharePoint. We’ll talk about the three overarching benefits and go into detail as to what those benefits mean and how the features of SharePoint enable those benefits to occur. You can watch the full video of this tutorial at the bottom of this blog.
The first of the SharePoint benefits is what I like to call content management and delivery. This area has always been a key problem in workplaces all around the world.
It is estimated that about 30% of your time is spent sending, replying, and organizing emails and data. SharePoint can help your employees and yourself get some of that time back.
By the way, that’s about 2.6 to 3 hours a day that you could potentially get back with SharePoint. People use SharePoint to store documents similar to how they do it for OneDrive. But the benefit with storing your documents with SharePoint is you can attach metadata to each document.
For example, let’s say you have an accounting folder where you have all your files separated by year first and then by the actual account itself.
Now that’s a very complicated system, especially if you want to see all the files for a certain person, right? All the files for a certain person, or all the tax files for every year are located in different folders so it’s hard to do that in a traditional OneDrive or desktop format.
So what SharePoint has done is to create document libraries, where all of your files are in a list and you can attach metadata to your documents.
In our example, we have a metadata called Year, another metadata called Account Type, and another metadata called Person.
If you want to look at all of the files for a specific person, you can just go over to that metadata and filter to that person. You would see all of the files for all of the years. If you want to go back to the original way and just look at all the files for a certain year, then you would go over to that metadata and filter to that year.
Metadata is the next level of organization for your document library.
I’m so surprised that not more companies do this. When they do this, they see improved productivity in finding the documents that they need.
This is also very scalable. For example, you could have a document library for your contracts, another document library for your accounting, and another document library for your HR. They can be held separately so that someone in HR cannot review the documents in accounting.
Another feature that allows for robust content management delivery is through SharePoint lists. In this example, we have a customized database that someone has created to hold the data that is relevant to them.
This is a list of event itineraries. Each record here is a specific event in that event itinerary. We have a Breakfast meet & greet Welcome & Introduction, and so on.
What this person has done is to create columns that are relevant to them. So for each session, they have a code, type, description, speakers, start time, and end time.
What’s powerful about SharePoint lists is that they give you the versatility of a robust database, and they are easy for a worker to actually employ. It’s very easy to create your own list and column types. You can have sophisticated column types like choice columns (eg. Session type) or user-based columns (eg. Speakers).
There are many things you can do once your SharePoint list has been created. It’s also scalable because you can create one for many things. You can create one for expenses instead of doing it in a random Excel file that’s very hard to access. Everyone can access and update it. If there are changes, you can require approvals for those changes and add tiny workflows.
These lists can be modified with attachments as well. For example, this is a list of blog articles where each one is an actual file. So this is a mix of document libraries and SharePoint lists, where someone’s created a document library with metadata and columns from a SharePoint list.
So you can do a lot of mix and match here too. This is much better than your data being in some random warehouse or OneDrive or emails.
SharePoint is an all-in-one place for all your data, whether it’s a document library or a SharePoint list.
The final feature for SharePoint is that it is a team site. It’s an internal team site where all your employees can access the information they need. You can have a team site for your entire organization for things like news, blog posts, calendars, quick links, and external resources that your employees use.
For example, if I want to find my HR policies, I don’t have to email the HR person. I can go to the team site and find the HR section to find all the documents that I need.
It’s also really relevant that when you have SharePoint, your organization’s team site is your homepage. So as soon as someone opens up Chrome or Explorer, they can see the latest company news and activities.
You can have group-specific team sites as well. You can have one team site for the entire organization and another team site that’s private for your team so that only information that’s relevant to the employee is given to them.
You can create your own SharePoint sites and SharePoint lists. It’s very easy for anyone to create it since there’s no coding involved and it’s all drag and drop.
One of the important SharePoint benefits concerns business process workflows. This is an example of a very simple business process workflow for an organization.
A piece of document arrives to an email inbox, which is rerouted to reviewers. It then goes through multiple stages of reviewers. If they approve, it’s accepted; if not, it’s rejected.
This process involves a couple of emails, right? You have an email arriving to the actual inbox. Then an email has to be sent to Anna and Sean to review. Anna and Sean will probably email each other to review it. And then finally another email to indicate approval or disapproval.
Now, if the data that is used is actually within SharePoint, this workflow can be automated. For example, we can create a SharePoint list that has all of these documents. The document arrives and it needs to be reviewed by either Sean or Anna before it’s accepted.
Instead of an email process, the person who wants the approval can upload it into a SharePoint list or a document library, which then automatically sends an email notification to Sean and Anna. This can be done through either Power Automate or SharePoint’s internal workflow system.
We’ve actually done an expense approval system on our YouTube series, where we talked about how to use Power Automate with SharePoint to automate that system.
Here’s a simple expense approval that I did for an organization, which previously used to take about 7 or 8 emails and had way too many pain points. Previously, the employee who submitted the expenses was kept out of the loop, and there was no way to organize everything afterwards.
SharePoint and a workflow system like Power Automate can really fix this. Once you have your data, processes, and SharePoint, it’s very easy for other apps to come in and improve that process.
We’ve talked about how SharePoint and Power Automate can be used to automate business process workflows. But the same thing can be said with SharePoint and Power Apps. Let’s say you don’t want Sean and Anna to access SharePoint at all.
You can create an app for Sean and Anna where they can go on a website that shows them the contracts that they need to review one by one. They don’t get any emails, they just log onto the app. And again, the best thing about Power Apps is that it’s no code.
SharePoint is also very powerful with Power BI. For example, let’s say you have your expense approval system in SharePoint. That also means you’re tracking all the data for that process. You’re tracking who submits expenses, how much they are, and how long it takes to review everything. One of the SharePoint benefits is that you can use the data to create a report and a dashboard on Power BI.
SharePoint enables workflows, but integrating it with other Power Platform apps really takes it to the next level.
The third of the SharePoint benefits is collaboration. This is one of the reasons why most organizations justify purchasing SharePoint to improve their productivity. There are lots of SharePoint benefits and features that enable a collaborative environment. I’ll go through each one very quickly.
Version control allows you to make sure your documents are up to date and if there are any changes made to documents, you can always go back to the previous version.
Approve and review is like what we talked about in the business process workflows. You can have a document library system set up where someone submits a document and someone else needs to approve or reject that document.
All-in-one bank is a philosophy where all your organization’s information should be in one place. So it should not be repeatable and easily findable for anyone who needs to find it.
Extensions can be created within SharePoint and imported to improve your collaboration. Things like task tracker, widgets, and Kanban boards are something that’s heavily used within SharePoint pages to improve collaboration.
Permissions allow you to select certain groups of people to have access to information. Sometimes, companies suffer from information overload. You don’t want everyone to have access to everything, and if you have very sensitive data, you need to make sure that only the people you want to see it actually see it.
Scalability is another great benefit. If you don’t do SharePoint on-premises but you do SharePoint on the cloud, you can scale up from 10 people all the way to a million people in a Microsoft server. It’s very easy to employ and you only have to play a flat rate per person.
Strong integration with Office 365 is also there since it’s made by the same parent company, Microsoft. If you have files in Excel, Word, or PowerPoint, you can actually edit them online in SharePoint rather than downloading them and editing them.

This tutorial will teach you about different iterating functions and how to efficiently use them in your calculations.
I often discuss how calculated columns are not required when making some calculations. This is because of iterators.
Iterators or iterating functions can help you do a calculation without physically putting the results in the table.
This technique can help you save up on the memory needed to load your Power BI data model. In the next sections, I’ll show you how to optimize your calculations using iterators.
To get started, create a new measure for Total Costs. Make sure to select the measure group where you want this new measure to land.
Press Shift and Enter to move down a line before you put the first iterating function, which is SUMX.
In the formula bar of Power BI, you can already see exactly what you need to put after the function as suggested by IntelliSense. For SUMX, you need to add a table after it.
The SUMX formula will run the logic at every single row of the given table. This is why iterators are associated with row context. Within the measure, iterators can turn the formula into a row context.
You will need to reference the Sales table after the SUMX function. To calculate the total costs, you have to multiply Order Quantity by Total Unit Cost.
We don’t need to reference the new column that was created at all. The Total Costs is a measure and I can bring it into my table to evaluate our total costs.
Now, drag the measure inside the table to see the results. Make sure that you selected an initial context from the City filter.
The Total Costs works in a similar way in terms of the initial context. The initial context gets applied to the Sales table, but then within each of these individual results, we’re calculating the Order Quantity multiplied by the Total Unit Cost.
Behind the scenes in our data model, we have turned on our filter and we have context coming in from our Regions table and another context coming in from our Date table. These flow down to our Sales table, which is filtered by the iterating function SUMX.
Since the SUMX function evaluates every single row of the Sales table virtually, there’s no need for a physical column for the results.
After the initial context, SUMX gets the product of Order Quantity and Total Unit Cost for every single row. Lastly, it evaluates all the calculated results from all the rows.
If you noticed, the original Costs column was created through a calculated column. As I’ve said, it’s unnecessary since iterators can already do its work. You can delete it because it can take up unnecessary memory in your model.
Iterating formulas run evaluations at every single row, while aggregating formulas do not.
A lot of this information is covered in-depth in the Mastering DAX course, but this is just to show you the the beginnings of iterating functions and how to start using them when it’s appropriate.
If you feel the need to create a calculated column inside your fact table, I can almost guarantee that an iterating function will do the work for you.
Now, I’ll show you another example of how iterators can do wonders on your calculation. This time, let’s work out the average cost.
Just copy the Total Costs formula and paste it into a new measure. You just have to change the name to Average Costs and then use AVERAGEX instead of SUMX.
The new formula runs a similar logic because it evaluates every single row of the Sales table. Additionally, you still need to get the product of Order Quantity and Total Unit Cost. The only difference here is instead of sum, the formula calculates the average.
Now, if you bring the Average Costs measure to the table, you can see how it compares to the Total Costs measure.
It’s amazing how you can run a similar logic just by changing the iterating function.
To optimize your table, you can delete redundant information like the Total Revenue column.
Since you can readily achieve the average costs, you won’t need the Total Revenue column in your table anymore. As long as you have the Unit Price and the Total Unit Cost columns, everything’s fine.
Now, you can create a new measure instead for Total Sales (Iteration) by using the SUMX function. You just have to reference the Sales table then get the product of Order Quantity and Unit Price.
After that, you can compare the results in the Total Sales and Total Sales (Iteration) columns. They both have the same results, right?
In terms of performance, there’s not much of a difference between using calculated columns and iterators. But when it comes to the data model, an iterator function can get rid of an entire column and save you hundreds of rows of data.
Additionally, you can delete redundant columns because iterators can calculate the necessary results virtually. This practice will make your table a lot thinner and your model a lot faster. Make sure you apply this optimization technique in your own calculations.
To sum up, an iterating function evaluates every single row while aggregators don’t.
The letter X on the end of the function makes it easier to identify iterators. Examples include the SUMX, AVERAGEX, MAXX, MINX functions and more.
Using iterating functions won’t create additional physical tables. This can help you save memory in Power BI.
