Should You Consolidate Your Database?

I recently did one of those things that analysts are supposed to do, which is to test the accepted wisdom about a concept that’s been kicking around so long no one seems to even question its veracity. The concept is database consolidation, and the accepted wisdom is that database consolidation lowers IT budgets and raises business effectiveness and efficiency while providing a high degree of ROI and value.

Unfortunately, that statement is only half true. Database consolidation can have a huge impact on IT budgets by lowering hardware and database license costs, and in doing so database consolidation can even help on the business side as well. But it turns out that most database consolidation projects miss an enormous opportunity to have a dramatic effect on the business side, and in fact often leave business users out on a limb when it comes to regulatory compliance, business continuity, and plain old business success.

Once again the accepted wisdom proves to be more accepted than is merited and a lot less wise than expected.

Here’s the problem. Database consolidation is easy if you leave out one important element: the maintenance of an accurate, usable, and extensive history of past transactions and results that spans the different data types, formats, and standards that have been used in your different source databases over time.

In other words, as long as you don’t try to maintain anything but the most cursory history of your chart of accounts, your customer records, your product offerings and prices, your manufacturing records, and everything else you’ve store in databases lo these many years, consolidation is easy. And cost-effective, and relatively useful, and a key component in IT simplification.

But if you want to maintain some historical perspective on your business, and be able to access the data that you need to meet regulatory requirements, analyze historical trends, maintain customer and business continuity, and otherwise run a successful business following a merger, divestiture, or other major consolidating event, it turns out that database consolidation only gets you so far. And it’s usually not far enough.

Far enough means being able to meet your business obligations, like providing the FDA with an historical record of the clinical trials for a new drug that isn’t working right or the processing records for a food product that is suspected of poisoning consumers. Far enough means being able to accurately balance your books and, if necessary, restate your earnings without worrying whether you’re about to break the law. Far enough means being able to truly optimize your cross-sell and up-sell opportunities by maintaining a single version of the “truth” about your customers and prospects. Far enough means making sure your business is up and running on day one post merger or divestiture, absent that chaos and uncertainty that an incomplete data environment would guarantee.

It’s true that there are other ways of meeting these business needs other than through a classic database consolidation. You can undertake a major master data management initiative, and keep everything you need in its original database, which solves your data history problem but kills any attempt to reduce the complexity and cost of your IT environment. Similarly, you can build an enterprise SOA infrastructure, and hide the complexity of data reconciliation behind a wall of Web services interfaces. Once again, say farewell to simplification and budget savings.

Or, you can try to actually do a business-level consolidation, which up until recently would have involved a massive, brute-force effort to reconcile an enormous set of complexities that typically exist between different database instances. That brute force effort is so brutal, and requires so much force, that – guess what – virtually no one has ever tried it.

I say virtually because I leave open the possibility that it has been done on a small scale, or in some benighted corner of the IT universe. But I’ve been looking for an example of this kind of deep business-level consolidation, and every time I’ve scratched the surface of a database consolidation project what I’ve come up with is something far short of “far enough.”

Ces 2023: All The Announcements In One Place

Lenovo always reveals a ton of new and upcoming products at CES, and 2023 was no exception. That included some new PC laptops, including some new high-end notebooks made for the growing hardcore gaming audience that also have  NVIDIA’s new GeForce RTX 20 Series discrete graphics for laptops. It also revealed a couple of nice gaming PC monitors, including a huge 43.4 inch screen.

The company also introduced the Lenovo Smart Clock, a small smart speaker with a 4-inch display that can also serve as your bedside alarm clock. You will use voice commands for the most part with this clock, powered by Google Assistant, which it comes out this spring for $79.99, which also makes it the cheapest Google Assistant smart display-based speaker you can get.

Lenovo also announced new Yoga PC products, including an all-in-one PC with a big 27-inch screen that’s made for digital artists. Finally, it announced two Smart Tab Android tablets that come with their own charging dock that doubles as a smart speaker as well. Both are due for release in March.


Sony had a strange CES 2023, eschewing its usual flurry of announcements for something of a victory lap.

The Japanese giant talked up the success of its audio division, its hit feature film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and boasted to the world that it has now sold more than 91.6 million PS4 consoles worldwide.

Of course, there wasn’t any mention of Sony’s flagging smartphone division. In fact, the Xperia brand was entirely absent from the show for the first time in years. We did get a surprise appearance from singer/rapper Pharrell, so there’s that.

As for what products were announced, Sony revealed its first 8K TV sets, some new 4K TVs, and a whole bunch of audio products.



NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang announced on stage at CES 2023 that more than 40 new laptops will arrive later this month packing the company’s new GeForce RTX 20 series discrete graphics processors.

While we already saw the RTX 2080m, RTX 2080 TI, the RTX 2070, and the Titan RTX in 2023, NVIDIA saved the least powerful member of the series — the RTX 2060 — until its CES 2023 keynote demo. The company showcased how ray tracing correctly renders reflections and refractions.

Huang demonstrated that the RTX 2060 can run Battlefield V at 60 frames per second using a 1440p resolution with ray tracing switched on. The GPU is expected to provide a huge boost for gaming laptop manufacturers and cut down on the bulky builds we’re used to seeing from the product category.

NVIDIA also revealed it’s working on drivers to support A-Sync monitors. NVIDIA’s intent is to bring G-Sync capabilities to these panels so gamers aren’t forced to purchase a new display. The company already tested 400 but for now only 12 qualify. NVIDIA will dub these supported panels as “G-Sync Compatible monitors.”


Intel’s CES 2023 press conference centered on its new Ice Lake laptop chips. The mobile chip range is Intel’s first “volume” 10nm PC processor for thin laptops, which should provide better battery life and less thermal-induced throttling.

Ice Lake uses Intel’s Sunny Cove micro-architecture, which allows for more tasks to be executed in parallel, and packs algorithms to reduce latency. The range also promises faster AI performance, Thunderbolt 3 integration, and Wi-Fi 6 support.

Intel also announced a 10nm Snow Ridge SoC for 5G base stations, and 10nm Cascade Lake Xeon and 10nm Lakefield processors.

If we had to summarize Intel’s CES 2023 in a word? That’d be ’10nm.’


Acer introduced the Chromebook 315 during CES 2023. Scheduled to arrive in Q1 2023, it will be the company’s first Chromebook based on an all-in-one “APU” processor manufactured by AMD. Acer typically guns for Intel-based processors in Chromebooks, but the company chose custom APUs for this model to better support Chrome- and Android-based apps. APUs (standing for “Accelerated Processing Unit”) combine a CPU and GPU in a single chip.

Acer also announced a new Windows 10 laptop, the Swift 7. The 14-inch 1,920 x 1,080 touchscreen notebook has very thin bezels, allowing it to have a 92 percent screen-to-body ratio. The body of the notebook is also very thin at just 9.95mm and is incredibly light at just 1.96 pounds, as it is made of magnesium-lithium and magnesium-aluminum alloys.


Buzzwords at CES 2023

While every company tried to push its own products as being innovative and original, we expected a few buzzwords to get repeated ad nauseam during CES 2023. We weren’t disappointed!

Here’s our list of the words we’ve gotten sick of hearing:

XR — As if VR (virtual reality), MR (mixed reality), and AR (augmented reality) weren’t already buzzwords, the new all-encompassing XR (extended reality) is starting to make the rounds.

AI — Even though AI has been a big buzzword in 2023, it will continue to be a hot topic in 2023, with more and more products having AI capabilities.

8K — Televisions and computer monitors will be at CES 2023, and some of them will have 8K resolutions. Now that 4K is more ubiquitous, companies are looking to 8K to entice consumers to upgrade their current displays.

IoT — IoT stands for “Internet of Things.” As smart home products become more accessible to everyday consumers, IoT is a big buzzword.

Big Data — Although this has been a buzzword for years now, it will continue being a buzzword in 2023 for sure.

Future proofed

Yes, “2024 flagship killer” should probably be taken as a marketing slogan and nothing more. In the fast paced race of mobile industry, no device can claim supremacy for more than a few weeks, never mind a year. That said, the OnePlus 2 strives to deliver on its promise of being a flagship killer, by offering a blend of the flagship specs from this year’s handsets combined with projected requirements of a flagship in a year’s time with an eye on the overall price.

In-part due to its affordable price tag and in part due to the specs including the RAM, fingerprint sensor, camera and dual SIM, the OnePlus 2 specs should, on paper, at least be good enough to challenge flagships from this year and next, at all but the top price bracket.

Value for money

On paper, the OnePlus 2 is equal to many devices – and better than a lot of others – but what really sets it apart is its price tag; other devices offering similar specifications retail in excess of $550 but the OnePlus 2 retails a lot lower at $389 for the higher-specced 64GB model (and even lower at $329 for the lesser-spec 16GB model).

Comparing the specs on paper is certainly one consideration but the actual experience also has to deliver. The $300 to $500 price bracket is becoming one of the most fiercely contested amongst OEMs and the OnePlus 2 will likely compete against devices that feature many of the similar specs.

For a lot of consumers, the little considerations may be the difference when choosing a handset, and while the OnePlus 2 certainly has a lot going for it, there are a few little things that could let the handset down.

Reasons NOT to buy the OnePlus 2

OnePlus has prided itself on offering flagship specs on its smartphones and while the OnePlus 2 does this mostly, there are a couple of features that have been omitted from the handset. The 3300 mAh battery is certainly large enough for most usage but as it’s non-removable, so you can’t swap it out when your battery does get low.

For other handsets like the Galaxy S6, this is not so much of an issue as that handset has both wireless and quick charging, but these are two features that are missing from the OnePlus 2. Wireless charging is a feature that is a nice-to-have but Quick Charge 2.0 is definitely a must-have feature and as the OnePlus 2 doesn’t have it, it means it’s likely to take several hours to charge to full (as opposed to other Quick Charge handsets that can charge half the battery in just half an hour).

A crucial feature that’s also been omitted from the OnePlus 2 is NFC (Near Field Communications) and while OnePlus claim it left the feature out as it’s not used that often, we’re entering an era where mobile payments are becoming mainstream. The lack of NFC means you won’t be able to pay for items using your phone and it also means you won’t be able to use NFC for accessories and cross-device communication, which are both likely to become popular features in the ecosystem over the next 18 months.

The invite system

The one thing that sets OnePlus apart from the competition is the (dreaded) invite system. To manage its inventory, the company issues invites to purchase the handset (and then allows people who have bought it to also share invites) and while they have promised a much larger launch inventory, actual availability could be an issue.

The other thing that could hamper the OnePlus 2 is its release date; the handset launches on August 13th and with availability likely to be significantly less than the demand, you might find yourself turning to other handsets. For example, the Galaxy Note 5 should be announced the same day before hitting the market a few days later on August 21st and offer similar specs (with a heftier price tag) while IFA at the beginning of September should herald other devices that vie for your money.

Support: Is there any?

One reason many customers opt not to buy a handset from a start-up (can we still call them that?) like OnePlus is the question of support and the OnePlus One doesn’t leave us with any confidence. OnePlus’ first handset failed on the support front and quality assurance fronts with numerous reports of DOA (defective/dead on arrival) devices and a lack of communication from the Chinese manufacturer.

For the OnePlus 2, it’s unclear how the company aims to improve this, especially as it seems to predominantly operate out of an Asian base (although it does have warehousing and admin functions in Europe). For customers in the USA and Europe, support (or the lack of it) could be a reason to skip the OnePlus 2 and opt for a handset with better support, should you need it.

Tkinter is used to create GUI in python, and it is the most commonly used library we have. By the use of it, we can create a GUI very easily and very fast. As the name suggests, it is used to specified someplace for the GUI component. Tkinter has many layout manager places is one of them. By the use of place, we can assign the size or position of the window. It is a geometry manager position widget we have in the Tkinter module.

To make use of the place, we first need to import the Tkinter package into our program. We can use this to place buttons, labels, and many other GUI stuff to place them properly into the window. Now we will see the syntax to use this in our program;

In order to use this, we need to pass three parameters inside it. Which are named as relax, rely and anchor to place our widgets on the screen. How does the place method work in Tkinter?

As of now, we know that we use a place to place our widgets on the window. Which can be relative or absolute position on the window. We have three different layouts available in Tkinter are named as place, pack, and grid. These all three are based on different positioning. The place is based on absolute positioning; we will discuss absolute positioning in details see below;

Absolute positioning: This can be termed as fixed positioning, not relative. Suppose we have some different sizes of our window that encapsulate all our widgets in the right position in the past. But suppose we want to resize our window in the future, so the widgets will not be moving from their position irrespective of the window size. Also, the size of every widget will be in pixels. This means the look and feel of the application will be different from one platform to another one, as we see in many web applications where it looks different on chrome, firefox, and other browsers. By using this, we can place our widgets on the window like labels, buttons, text, etc. Now we will see one example of how to use this and how it internally works to place the widgets on the window. height: By using this parameter, we can specify the height in pixels.

width: By using this parameter, we can specify the width in pixels.

anchor: By using this parameter, we can specify the original position of the GUI component, or we can say widget on the window. It comes up with so many different options for positioning the widget like S, W, E, N, SW, WE, EN. This position will indicate the corners, and it also has one default position that is NW.

relax: This parameter represents the horizontal offset between 0.0. to 1.0.

relay: This parameter represents the vertical offset between 0.0. to 1.0.

Y: This is the vertical offset that comes in pixels.

X: This is the horizontal offset that comes in pixels.

You need the Alexa app for Android or iOS to set up any of the Amazon Echo speakers, but once you’ve got your Echo in place, you might not give much thought to the program on your phone—not when you can do so much with voice commands aimed at your smart speaker.

If you’re ignoring the app, though, you’re missing out. It’s much more than just a setup utility for the Echo speakers, and it just got a major overhaul that means it’s more intuitive to use than ever.

Get to know the home screen

Open up the Alexa app and tap Home to get to the home screen (if you’re not already on it). This displays a useful overview of the help you’re getting from Alexa: you’ll see upcoming reminders, lists that you’ve edited recently, and speaker skills that you might want to try (from making a call to controlling your smart home).

Right at the top is the Alexa button—just tap this (or say “Alexa”) to give the digital assistant a voice command. If you’re not sure of the best way to use Alexa, try tapping Browse skills or Browse things to try further down the home screen to see some of the tricks Alexa is capable of.

View reminders and lists

Controlling the smart home devices you’ve connected to Alexa is another task that can be a little easier on a phone screen than it is with your voice, depending on what you’re trying to do (and how many devices you’re trying to manage). You can view your connected smart home devices in the Alexa app by tapping Devices.

The subsequent screen will let you turn smart lights and smart plugs on and off, adjust the temperature of your smart thermostat, check the status of your smart smoke alarm, and get at any other device you’ve set up. To add new devices to your Alexa ecosystem, tap the plus button in the top right corner.

To access more detailed settings for a particular device (the brightness of a smart bulb, for example), tap on the device category and then the device itself. Where devices are grouped together—say all the smart lights on a particular floor—you can turn them on and off with a single tap.

If you’re stuck for inspiration, open up the Featured tab to see some of Amazon’s suggested example routines—like one that will give you the weather forecast as soon as your morning alarm has finished. The more you play around with the options, the more ideas you’ll get for ways to simplify your life.

Manage music and audiobooks

The Play icon in the center of the Alexa navigation app is helpful if you’re using an Echo speaker to play music or audiobooks. Tap on it to pause and restart playback, skip forward or backward in the current playlist, and adjust the volume without having to shout voice commands at your smart speaker (which can be more convenient, especially if you’re in a different room).

Even better, the Play screen shows you what you’ve been listening to recently, whether that’s your music library, online radio stations, or audiobooks (exactly which options you’ll see will depend on the different services you’ve connected to Alexa). You can dive directly back into something right from the app.

To check what services you’ve got hooked up to Alexa, go to More, then Settings—you’ll see entries for Music, TV & Video, Flashing Briefing, Photos, and several others. In some cases, you can set default services that launch in response to voice commands when you don’t specify a particular service (such as Spotify or Apple Music).
