Rosa and Snivy

Rosa and Snivy are the best free Sync Pair in Pokémon Masters. You unlock the grass-type duo in the very first story chapter and the pair will carry you through pretty much any challenge you come across.

Korrina and Lucario

This fighting-type twosome is likely the first Sync Pair you’ll unlock that can Mega Evolve, becoming available after completing chapter 6 of the story mode.

With all moves unlocked, Lucario (and Mega Lucario) relies heavily on fast paced battles and a gradual stat build up with a huge payoff. Once unlocked, the move Skate on Through! Increases Attack and drastically ups Speed.

When combined with Power Up Punch as Mega Lucario which deals damage and increases Attack, Lucario becomes a lighting fast damage machine that can eventually finish off many foes with a single blow of Close Combat.

Barry and Piplup

Like Rosa and Snivy, Barry and Piplup are another early unlock (chapter 2) that benefits from being one of the few Sync Pairs that can evolve twice — first to Prinplup and finally to Empoleon.

Empoleon has one of the highest Special Attack stats in Pokémon Masters and the passive skill Power Flux 5 means the pair put out more damage when the move gauge is fuller. This helps the water-type pair synergize nicely with Rosa.

Viola and Surskit

Viola and Surskit are a late unlock during chapter 14 and — aside from the middling Flannery and Torkoal combo — are the first great Tech Sync Pair you can get for free.

This strong bug-type Sync Pair can evolve once into Masquerain and offers solid Defense and Special Defense stats. The pairing is at its best in co-op battles, however, where its trapping moves and Terrify 1 passive move prevent swapping Pokémon and dropping opponents’ Attack stats, respectively.

Koga and Crobat

This free Sync Pair is unlocked very close to the end of Pokémon Masters’ base story mode during chapter 16, but the wait is absolutely worth it for this deadly duo.

Best Free Spyware And Malware Removal Software

Your computer is probably the most valuable asset in your home, even though it’s not the most expensive. Gaining access to your computer can make a lot of money for creators of spyware, malware and ransomware. For example, a new ransomware called CryptoWall has been going around lately that encrypts everything on your hard drive and won’t give you the decryption key until you pay them money.

A lot of systems become infected when someone opens an email attachment that appears to be safe, but in reality is malware. To protect yourself from those type of situations, you really need a real-time monitoring program in order to stop the malware from installing itself immediately.

Table of Contents

I’m going to mention a couple of great free anti-malware programs, but most of them do not include real-time monitoring in the free versions. Whether you should purchase the premium or pro versions depends on what kind of computer user you are. If you haven’t gotten a virus or malware in many years, you probably know how to avoid these types of scams, but if you’re uncertain about whether something is legitimate or not, it’s probably a good idea to have more protection.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

One of the best tools for repairing malware infections is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. The free version includes anti-malware, anti-spyware and anti-rootkit protection. The big downside to the free version is that it does not include real-time protection or automated scans, so malware would not be blocked from installing itself onto your system and would only be removed once you ran a manual scan.

Overall, it’s a great product and can really help you remove any pre-existing malware on your system. However, the real value of the program is in the real-time monitoring and protection available only in the premium version ($25).

Spybot Search & Destroy

Spybot has been around for a very long time and has a very good track record of finding and removing spyware and malware. It’s trustworthy and regularly updated.

When installing Spybot, you’ll be asked whether you want to be protected automatically or whether you want more control and feedback from the program, so pick the option that suits you best.

Once complete, you can go back to the main window and perform a system or file scan. Again, there is no live protection in the free version. Also, the free version only has malware and rootkit protection, not virus protection. They have a Home version for $14 and a Professional version for $26.

It does have a feature called Immunization, which basically is website blocking of known malware sites. It’s not enabled by default, so you have to manually enable it.

Ad-Aware has also been around for a very long time and is one of the best antivirus programs out there. When installing the program, make sure to uncheck the two boxes for SecureSearch as that is not really worth it. Google does just fine protecting your searches.

The best thing about Ad-Aware is that it supports real-time protection in the free version! Just about all the other programs require a paid version for real-time monitoring. They do have several paid versions ranging from $24 to $50, but you get a lot of protection without having to pay anything.

In the paid versions, you can also get email protection, which is really useful to avoid those nefarious attachments that can infect your system.

SUPERAntiSpyware is another spyware/malware removal program that has a long history. A lot of these older programs have gotten better and better over the years and that’s why you keep hearing the same names over and over again.

Again, the free version does not include real-time protection, scheduled scans or automatic updates. The paid version is $20, but it’s a yearly fee. I’m willing to pay companies like Kaspersky a yearly subscription fee because they do an excellent job, but I really don’t think SUPERAntiSpyware is worth $20 every year. If you plan to purchase an anti-spyware program, it’s best to pick one of the above-mentioned ones instead.

AdwCleaner is probably the only program you may not have already heard about. Basically, this program focuses on toolbars, browser hijackers, adware, etc.

The program catches a lot of malware that other programs sometimes miss, so that’s why I have mentioned it here. In my opinion after using malware programs for the last 15 years, these are the best options in terms of freeware. I would highly recommend, though, purchasing a full version of one of the programs for real-time protection. Enjoy!

How To Use Scanline Sync And Cap Fps In Rivatuner

While RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) is most well-known for being bundled with MSI Afterburner and used for monitoring and overclocking GPUs, RTSS actually has some use separate from Afterburner. Here, we discuss those functions and teach you how to use them to cap your FPS (frame per second) or enable Scanline Sync.

What is RivaTuner?

RivaTuner Statistics Server (usually shortened to RTSS) is an application most known for being shipped with MSI Afterburner. The purpose it serves with MSI Afterburner is enabling an on-screen display of framerate and other performance metrics, including GPU utilization and temperatures.

With or without Afterburner, however, RivaTuner is capable of applying FPS caps and enabling Scanline Sync on any monitor.

What is an FPS cap?

Using an FPS cap, you can set your in-game framerate to just at or just under your screen refresh rate. If the game you’re playing offers an FPS cap, chances are high that you’ll want to use that cap instead of RivaTuner’s, but if you want to learn how to use RivaTuner’s for universal application, keep reading.

What is Scanline Sync?

Scanline Sync, like FreeSync and G-Sync, is another technology that looks to replace the V-Sync standard. FreeSync and G-Sync are both hardware-enabled features, though, whereas Scanline Sync is used in software to achieve a similar effect. Scanline Sync is particularly ideal for displays that don’t have FreeSync or G-Sync (e.g. your living room TV, should you want to game on it without horrific screen tearing or input lag).

Where Scanline Sync differs from other V-Sync alternatives is actually hinted at in its name. Unlike other techniques, which work with complete frames as much as possible, Scanline Sync actually allows you to choose a specific scanline, one where screen tearing is near-guaranteed but contained. With the right adjustments, this scanline can be moved nearly offscreen and provide a tear-free, lag-free alternative to V-Sync.

Should I use an FPS cap or Scanline Sync?

While RivaTuner offers both FPS capping and Scanline Sync, you can’t actually use both simultaneously.

The main way to decide between the two features is to take a look at your existing hardware.

FPS caps will work on the most systems with the fewest issues and is preferred to Scanline Sync if you already have a FreeSync or G-Sync monitor. In this case, Scanline Sync’s job is already being done by the monitor (and compatible GPU), so it’s unneeded.

Scanline Sync is best used to compensate for the lack of FreeSync and G-Sync, but it comes with a catch, too: high GPU utilization (~80%+) under Scanline Sync can introduce major screen tearing to an image. If you’re looking to run games on a 60 Hz display with Scanline Sync and have plenty of GPU power to spare, this shouldn’t be an issue. But if you experience any, we highly recommend turning down settings or using an FPS cap instead.

How to set an FPS cap in RivaTuner

Make sure “Application detection level” is set to Low or higher, and you’re good to go: you’ve set a global FPS cap. Should you ever want to remove it, simply turning off RivaTuner will do the job.

How to set up Scanline Sync in RivaTuner

In order to use Scanline Sync in RivaTuner, the framerate limit must first be set to 0, since the two functions are mutually exclusive. Don’t worry, as this won’t literally set your frames to 0 – it just disables the FPS capping function so Scanline Sync can be used.

Now that the Framerate limit is set to 0, it’s time to set the Scanline Sync. The number that you’ll be setting in this field is not a framerate limit but rather coordinates for the tearline. Your exact results will vary depending on the size and resolution of your display, and you will need to manually adjust this value in increments of 10 since there is no one-size-fits-all option.

The best place to start is to take your vertical resolution (for instance, 1080 pixels on a 1080p screen or 1440 pixels on a 1440p screen), and subtract that number by 150 to 200. For a standard 1080p display, we recommend starting at 930 as a baseline and reducing as needed until you’ve achieved the desired result.

Best (Free) Tools For Video Editing

In addition to introducing you to some of the best free video editing options, we’ll point you to websites where you can download free video clips, sound effects, music, and more to use in your films.

This article was translated from Swedish to English, and originally appeared on

Microsoft Clipchamp: Built-in and simple

In 2023, Microsoft bought the simple, web-based video editor Clipchamp and it’s now a built-in application in Windows 11. In its basic version, Clipchamp is free for everyone, but if you want more features, you’ll need a subscription. Luckily, it’s included in the Microsoft 365 subscription, so if you’re already subscribed to the Office programs, you’ll also get Clipchamp’s extra features.

One problem you’ll encounter if you capture video with an iPhone or newer Android phone is that the files you import are probably in HEVC format, which is not supported by Clipchamp. The program will convert these to H264 format on import, but it can take a while if the films are large and numerous.

For a much deeper dive into its capabilities, check out our tutorial on how to use Clipchamp, Microsoft’s sleeper-hit video editor.

Davinci Resolve: The giant

You don’t have to spend a single cent to edit video like a pro. Well, you’ll have to take a course or two to get as good as a pro, but you can use the same program as many pros—Davinci Resolve.

The program, from Blackmagic Design, is one of the four video editing program used in the movie and television industry, but unlike Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, and Apple Final Cut Pro, it’s free for individual users. There’s a paid version too, but it doesn’t add much that the average home user will miss.

Davinci Resolve has an interface similar to Premiere, so if you’ve tried that before, it might be a little easier to get started. However, because it’s a professional program with everything needed to edit video for television, there’s a learning curve. Expect to have to keep at it for a while and maybe watch the occasional guide on YouTube before you feel completely comfortable with the program.

Video editing in general is resource intensive, but Davinci Resolve is particularly so. It requires at least 16 gigabytes of RAM, an SSD for storage, and a graphics card or integrated graphics circuit with at least 2 gigabytes of video memory and support for OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 11.

When you first start the program, you’ll be prompted to start your first project and can also choose which set of keyboard shortcuts you want to use—if you have used Premiere, for example, you may choose the same keyboard shortcuts it uses, but otherwise you can choose the program’s own shortcuts.

Importing and sorting

Davinci Resolve is a so-called nonlinear editor, which means that any changes you make will not affect the original files. When you export a finished film, the program copies the selected parts from them and puts them together with the various effects and other changes you have made. Therefore, you can sort your original files as you wish, but be aware that you cannot delete or move them, as the program needs access to them in order to create a final film. For example, if you have the files on an external SSD and don’t have it connected when you try to edit, the program will display a large “Media Offline” warning.

To add video files as clips to use in your projects, start by opening the Media tab. Then you can simply drag the files from Explorer into the program, which will chew on them for a while as the files load; they then end up in the Media Storage. Select a file to view the clip in the preview box at the top right. Here you can play the clip and also jump around in it via the timeline below.

Above the Media Storage area you will find Media Pool, which is also a grid of video clips. The difference between the two is that the Media Pool shows the files you have added to the open project. On the left is a panel where you can sort and organize all the clips—the Media Pool is also available in Davinci Resolve’s other work tabs (Cut, Edit, Fusion, Color, and Fairlight). You can create bins to collect different types of clips—for example, for different scenes or different locations. You can also differentiate using color-coding.

Cut the film

Go to the Cut tab, where you will find the easier of two ways to put a film together. The interface here is divided into three main sections: the Timeline at the bottom where you place clips and do the actual editing, the Media Pool at the top left, from which you drag clips to be included in the Timeline, and the Preview at the top right.

Other tabs

Fusion is Davinci Resolve’s tool for building and working with special effects, and not something you should start with right away.

Color is all about adjusting exposure and colors either for effect or to make different clips blend together better. It’s something you’ll start using pretty soon if you’re putting together more ambitious films, such as the same scene shot with multiple cameras. The Color tab allows you to make these different angles show the same colors.

Fairlight is all about audio editing and effects. For example, you can remove or at least reduce the noise from a windy recording.

Deliver is the tab you use to export a finished film in a suitable format, and of course you can save different versions for different purposes. Here you can set the resolution, file format, and more before you start the export (which can take a while).

Lightworks: A professional program with a good free version

If Davinci Resolve doesn’t appeal to you, you can try another program used professionally, but with a different approach to free users. Lightworks is a long-standing program that was used in the 1990s in Hollywood films such as Pulp Fiction and Braveheart. Thelma Schoonmaker, who has been editing Martin Scorcese films for 50 years, is one of its most famous users. The program has continued to evolve over the years, with different owners.

Since 2023, it is owned by the new company LWKS, started by two of the developers, who have chosen to provide the basic version of Lightworks completely free of charge. Unlike other “demo” versions of paid programs, almost nothing is missing. The only major limitation for home users is that finished films can only be exported at 720p resolution and not 1080p or 4K.

Like Davinci Resolve, Lightworks has a fairly steep learning curve. However, the interface has a clear focus on creativity, so if you roll up your sleeves and get started, it shouldn’t take long to get decent results. The program can be controlled almost entirely with the keyboard, so focus on learning all the shortcuts.

You start by creating a project and adding clips via the Import clips button. The interface is divided into three parts: Sources (clips, effects, transitions) at the top left, Preview and Info at the top right, and Timeline along the entire bottom of the window. Once you have some clips, you can drag one to the timeline to add it to the film. Here’s how to make simple cuts:

Move the red time marker to the right place in the clip.

Press the C key or the icon with two red arrows facing each other during the preview to split the clip.

Now you can edit each half of the clip separately.

You can trim at the beginning or the end of a clip by either grabbing the edge and dragging with the mouse or moving the time marker with the A and S keys, pressing the W key to switch to trim mode and then press the comma or point to trim left or right. Press the tab when you are done.

Add simple transitions by selecting the tab Transitions at the top left and drag and drop a transition where you want it in the timeline and the program will do the rest.

To create an overlap between sound and image (called a J or L clip), you can temporarily mute either the video or audio track and trim the other. Trim forward in one and backward in the other by an equal number of frames, then move them back together with both active. Lightworks shows with a little red icon how many frames out of sync the tracks are so you can easily fix it if you made a mistake.
