But what is this new ‘Pink Whale Challenge’ and how does it compare to the treacherous Blue Whale Challenge? Well, that’s what we’re here to tell you about.

What is the Pink Whale Challenge?

The Pink Whale Challenge was created back in 2023.  It follows the exact opposite idea that was perpetrated by the Blue Whale Challenge. The Pink Whale Challenge is an internet dare game, but not like most out there. This game dares people to love and respect themselves.

While it also encourages helping and loving others, the game’s goal is to get people to start loving themselves. In the era of Photoshop and Instagram, where everything and everyone has to look perfect at all times, the Pink Whale Challenge encourages people to see the beauty in the natural and normal. It is helping people normalize self-care and boosting self-worth.

The Pink Whale Challenge is a list of tasks that the player must do over a span of 50 days. Each challenge must be finished by the end of the day, to make way for the next. While there seem to be many variations of the game circulating online, they all seem to have more or less of the same challenges.

Pink Whale Challenge vs Blue Whale Challenge

The Blue Whale Challenge originated in China in 2013 and soon rose in popularity. Over the past seven years, the game has seen rises and dips in its popularity. Blue Whale Challenge is a form of cyberbullying, in which a ‘curator’ spells out tasks for teenagers to follow. The tasks usually involve self-harm and ‘defeating fear’.

There are 50 tasks that the challenge entails. The last task is the one where you take your own life. The Blue Whale Challenge portrays itself as a way for teens to ‘defeat fear’ with a list of challenges. The challenges start off slow, like watching scary videos at three in the morning or visiting a graveyard at midnight. However quite soon, these escalate to physical harm. Some reports state that the challenges also include harming members of the victim’s family. The most iconic challenge is the one where the victim has to care a blue whale into their skin with a sharp object.

As opposed to this, the Pink Whale Challenge attempts to spread love and healing. Where the Blue Whale Challenge sought to bring self-harm, the Pink Whale Challenge encourages self-love as well as love and support for others. In keeping with the trend of challenges, the Pink Whale Challenge has the player complete a list of 50 tasks too.

However, these tasks are nothing like those of their alter ego. The tasks encourage players to look at themselves differently; find what they like about themselves and be happy with what they have.

Why the world needs Pink Whale Challenge

Well, to put it lightly, the world is messed up right now. The only thing on everyone’s mind is the pandemic. Starting off at the beginning of 2023, the COVID-19 pandemic swept across countries like wildfire. Hundreds of thousands have lost their lives, and families have been torn apart.

Additionally, the society that we live in has gotten so obsessed with perfection, that we no longer care who we are; we just want to look perfect all the time. While apps like Instagram are a fun way to socialize, they are a constant reminder of what you are not. Every image you see is hidden behind a filter; every smile you see is posed. We have lost our individuality in the search for acceptance.

In the midst of all this turmoil, the worst stain on humanity is the creation of the suicide game ‘Blue Whale Challenge’. A game that entices teenagers to end their life is a sad reflection of the state that humanity has reached.

But at its worst shine the beams of hope. The year 2023 has already had to deal with racism. But from that was reborn the Black Lives Matter movement. This time it is stronger than it has ever been and we hope it echoes change for the future.

Similarly, to combat the terrible Blue Whale Challenge, an app designer in Brazil came up with the concept of the Pink Whale Challenge. The idea is to show the world that the internet can also be used to spread love and healing. We have this vast network in the palm of our hands, so why not use it to spread love and caring.

The Pink Whale Challenge relies on the participation of as many people as it can get. The more people talk about it, the stronger it gets. We need the Pink Whale Challenge now more than ever.

Pink Whale Challenge list of tasks

So what challenges does the Pink Whale Challenge entail? While it started off as a mailing list that people subscribed to, that is no longer functional. Instead, there is a list of tasks that you must follow. Each task should be completed by the end of the day. There is no compulsion to post proof of your completion of the tasks, but you can get your friends to do the challenge with you and share your progress with each other.

Day 13 Give somebody a good, long hug.

Day 14 Go to the mall or online shop (you don’t need to buy anything).

Day 15 Wake up early to watch the sunrise.

Day 16 Do your best in everything you do.

Day 17 Tell your family members you love them and give them a hug.

Day 18 Doodle hearts on your hand or on paper.

Day 19 Spend time with friends or family and take some time to meditate.

Day 20 – 49 Repeat previous days and be kind to yourself and others.

 Day 50 Look in the mirror. Think about the past months. Look at how your life is worth it. Suicide is not the answer. You are loved. You have completed the Pink Whale Challenge.

What Is Windowserver On Mac (And Is It Safe?)

A glance at your Mac’s Activity Monitor will reveal a process called WindowServer at the top section of the list. It is one of the many system processes that your Mac cannot do without.

In this explainer, we’ll walk you through the nature of the WindowServer and what it does on your Mac. We’ll also cover reasons why the process is always running in the background, and what to do when it becomes a CPU hog.

What is WindowServer on Mac?

WindowsServer is a central component of the Mac operating system that’s responsible for projecting the visual interface of applications on your screen. The WindowServer also manages other important system graphical user interfaces (GUI) like the Dock and Menu Bar. Every single thing that comes on your Mac’s screen was made possible by the WindowsServer.

macOS starts WindowServer automatically when you log in to your Mac. The process will stay active in the background, powering the graphical/visual interface of all applications until you log out or shut down your Mac. Asides from providing graphical support to applications, some background applications without a user-facing interface also rely heavily on the WindowServer.

Is WindowServer Safe?

WindowServer on Mac is a harmless system process. If anything, it helps applications and other system processes function correctly. You should only worry about WindowServer when it overburdens the CPU, raises fan noise, or slows down your Mac’s performance.

You may be tempted to force-quit WindowServer if you find it using an insane amount of CPU resources in the Activity Monitor, but you shouldn’t. You can’t use your Mac without this process running in the background.

Force-quitting WindowServer will close all active applications, refresh the operating system, and log you out of your Mac. When you sign back in, macOS will automatically launch WindowServer in the background again and the cycle continues. That goes to show how important the process is to the proper functioning of your Mac.

Despite being a safe system process, WindowServer sometimes causes your Mac to malfunction. In the next section, we explain why that happens and how to nip WindowServer’s high CPU usage in the bud. 

What Causes WindowServer High CPU Usage (And How to Fix)

Naturally, WindowServer’s CPU and memory consumption will depend on the number of active applications using the process on your Mac. However, the following factors can result in high CPU usage issues:  

1. You Have Too Many Items On Your Desktop

Remember that everything on your Mac’s display was put there by the WindowServer. The more items (icons, files, folders, etc.) there are on your desktop, the more processing power required by WindowServer to keep them there.

If WindowServer is using excessive CPU power and there are over 50 items on your desktop, delete unnecessary files and icons. Better yet, move them to a single folder on the desktop.

2. Too Many Active Apps and Windows

Having too many active apps and windows may also cause WindowServer CPU usage to skyrocket. Close unnecessary windows and applications that you aren’t using.

3. A Buggy Program Is Causing the Problem

If WindowServer’s CPU usage shoots through the roof only when you launch a particular application, the app most likely has a bug causing it to malfunction. To pinpoint the app causing the problem, close all active applications and relaunch them one at a time. Use an application for at least 3-5 minutes and check the WindowServer usage in the Activity Monitor.

If an application abnormally spikes WindowServer’s CPU consumption, update the app and check if that fixes the problem. Otherwise, contact the app developer to file a bug report.

4. Your Gaming Mouse Is Another Potential Culprit

Some Mac users noted that using a gaming mouse on their devices caused WindowServer on Mac to use a lot of CPU power. Disconnect any gaming accessory connected to your Mac and check if that reduces WindowServer CPU usage.

5. Visual Effects and Animation

macOS ships with a “Transparency” feature that blurs the background of active windows against your desktop picture. While this feature adds some sort of aesthetic effect and visual to app windows, it could cause the WindowServer to consume high CPU power—particularly when you have too many windows open.

6. Multiple Virtual Desktop or External Monitor Setup

WindowServer consumes more CPU power and memory if you use an external display. The process uses even more processing power to transmit visuals to multiple monitors. If you use multiple displays with your Mac, disconnect one monitor and see if that reduces WindowServer CPU usage.

If the problem continues, return to the Mission Control menu and uncheck Displays have separate Spaces.

Note: Disabling “Displays have separate Spaces” in Mission Control will reduce WindowServer’s CPU usage, but your external monitor may go blank if you use an application in full-screen mode.

What Is HDMI 2.1a?

High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is one of the standard audio/video interfaces allowing video transmission from a source device to a display. 

With the expected release date earlier in 2023, HDMI 2.1a is HDMI’s new standard. It boasts a suite of upgrades, including support for higher resolutions, improved frame rates, HDR video, and much higher bandwidth capacity. 

HDMI 2.1a uses the same connector as previous HDMI versions and has backward compatibility. 

What Are the New Features of HDMI 2.1a?

HDMI 2.1a has a stack of new features that improve the quality of video and gaming, such as support for much higher resolutions and refresh rates. 

Higher resolutions: HDMI 2.1a supports 8K 60Hz and 4K 120Hz, as well as 5K and 10K resolutions (for commercial AV). 

Dynamic HDR: Dynamic High Dynamic Range (HDR) offers an increase in contrast and visual quality. HDMI 2.1a supports multiple formats for both static and dynamic HDR metadata, including HDR10+ (the dynamic version of HDR10). This is big news because unlike existing HDR formats such as Dolby Vision which are proprietary (meaning manufacturers need to pay licensing fees to use it), HDR10+ has no licensing fees. 

Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM): Generally, tone mapping is performed by the display. SBTM is an HDR feature that uses the content source (such as the game console or computer) to perform the processing behind tone mapping. This helps the display perform better with varying SDR, HDR, and dynamic HDR inputs. 

Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable: The new HDMI 2.1 specification comes with a new cable specification that has an increased bandwidth capability of up to 48Gbps (up from 18Gbps with HDMI 2.0). 

HDMI Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC): eARC replaces the previous Audio Return Channel (ARC), providing greater audio optimization for multiple connected components. It supports high-bitrate audio formats up to 192kHz, 24-bit in uncompressed 5.1, 7.1, or 32-channel audio (including Dolby Atmos). With eARC, users can connect all devices to their TV then run a single HDMI to their soundbar for lossless, high-quality audio, which simplifies setups. 

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR): One of the new enhanced gaming features, VRR reduces screen lag and stutter for smoother gameplay by allowing the gaming console to deliver frames as fast as it can. 

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM): ALLM automatically sets the ideal latency setting depending on the video source. For gaming consoles or computers, low latency mode will be set to enable lag-free viewing. For video, low latency will be disabled so that video quality is optimized. 

Quick Frame Transport (QFT): Another gaming feature, QFT helps reduce latency by increasing the speed of transporting frames via the cable. This reduces the display lag and improves responsiveness.

A few days ago, OpenAI tweeted that they would be rolling out the Code Interpreter feature to all ChatGPT Plus users. Now, two days later – it looks like the rollout has already started, as I am able to enable and use the feature now. In this article, I’m going to address what is the Code Interpreter, how to enable it, and also list examples of how you can use it yourself.

So, let’s start from the top.

It looks like someone has submitted this to Sidebar (thanks!), I highly recommend that you also open this article from swyx – Code Interpreter == GPT 4.5 – which has a really nice intro and a lot of technical outgoing links. That is if you’re looking for a more technical overview.

What is the Code Interpreter?

In simple terms, the Code Interpreter can take code that you provide and perform (execute) actions with it; it can also analyze files that you upload and provide feedback on them.

Now, because the GPT-4 model in ChatGPT is limited to 25 messages every 3 hours, I haven’t been able to fully delve into the possibilities of this features, but I’m sure over the coming weeks everyone will get a better understanding of how it works and how to use it.

Nonetheless, so far I have been able to do the following:

Upload a screenshot and have Code Interpreter explain what information the image has. For example, you can ask it to summarize the text on an image (see the conversation here). This means that you can also upload an image of a website and ask about the overall design structure, the color scheme the site is using, and things of this nature.

You can upload your access.log file and ask the Code Interpreter to create various summaries, such as how many visitors your site has had, which are the most common referrers, or which are the most common web browsers that people use to access your website. You can do this practically for any kind of a data set.

You can also do things like generate charts, for example – here is a chart I generated with Code Interpreter that shows the most common URL paths that people were using from the dataset I provided.

You can also do things like provide raw data and then convert it into chart format. In the example below, I took the data from my chúng tôi frameworks article and asked the Code Interpreter to create a chart for it.

This is super convenient and an easy way to add more visuals to your own content. You can get it to convert practically any kind of data into visual format.

You can also specify which specific library you would like to use (this is limited to Python for now, and you can check the most popular Python libraries for data science in my article here).

I’m not sure what exactly is the file upload limit for Code Interpreter, but I personally was able to upload a 100MB file (my chúng tôi file), and it worked just fine.

What Is 5G, And What Can We Expect From It?

What is 5G?

mmWave – very high-frequency spectrum between 17 and 100GHz and high bandwidth for fast data. Most carriers are targeting the 18-24GHz range. It’s a reasonably short-range technology that will be used in densely populated areas.

Sub-6GHz – spectrum operating in WiFi-like frequencies between 3 and 6GHz. Can be deployed in small cell hubs for indoor use or more powerful outdoor base stations to cover medium-range much like existing 4G LTE coverage. Most 5G spectrum will be found here.

Low-band – very low frequencies below 800MHz. Covers very long distances and is omnidirectional to provide blanket backbone coverage.

Beamforming – used in mmWave and sub-6GHz base stations to direct waveforms towards consumer devices, including by bouncing waves off buildings. A key technology in overcoming the range and direction limitations of high-frequency waveforms.

Massive MIMO – multiple antennas on base stations serve multiple end-user devices at once. Designed to make high-frequency networks much more efficient and can be combined with beamforming.

High-frequency mmWave base stations, sub-6GHz WiFi-esque small and medium cells, beamforming, and massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) are all used to build faster 5G networks. But there are also major changes to data encoding and infrastructure network slicing that are seldom talked about. These are all new technological introductions compared to today’s 4G LTE networks.

In addition, the 5G standard is split into several key parts – Non-Standalone (NSA), New Radio (NR), and Standalone (SA). Today’s first public 5G networks will be based on NSA, and are planned to eventually transition over to SA. But more on that later.

What’s the difference between 5G and 4G? How fast is 5G?

The big difference between 5G and 4G is the new technologies used by the former. These include radio frequencies, spectrum sharing carriers, and bandwidth block sizes. These lead to practical improvements, such as faster data speeds and lower latency for 5G versus 4G customers.

For example, 5G users should experience minimum data speeds above 50Mbps, while 4G LTE-A customers may average around 30Mbps. Likewise, 5G boasts sub-10ms latency while 4G customers regularly experience 50ms or much more. However, the exact real-world speeds and latency on any given network have a lot of variables, including the type of 5G or 4G network deployed by your carrier. The table below details some of the more technical differences between early 5G and historic 4G.

Take a closer look: How does 5G actually work?

The first 5G networks are based on the non-standalone specification, but will eventually transition to the full standalone specification.

The changes to subcarriers are a little harder to explain. Technologies encompassed by this include scalable OFDM and sub-carrier spacing, windowed OFDM, flexible numerology, and scalable Transmission Time Intervals. Put simply, frames that carry data can be bigger and faster when higher throughput at high efficiency is required. Alternatively, these frames can be made smaller in order to achieve much lower latency for real-time applications, such as IoT applications for those smart cities.

Our take on 5G: is it worth it?

Faster data is obviously great for downloading huge files, but 5G isn’t a huge game-changer for day-to-day mobile use. Most 4G LTE networks are speedy these days, and you don’t need 100Mbps speeds to browse Twitter. Not forgetting that 5G rollouts are still in their relatively early stages, meaning there’s a good chance coverage may be spotty or even non-existent in your area for the time being. Especially in smaller towns and rural areas.

For that reason, we wouldn’t recommend customers go out and buy a new smartphone just for 5G alone. 4G smartphones from the past couple of years are still perfectly serviceable and still represent good bargain purchases. That being said, all flagship and virtually all mid-range phones support 5G networking in some form. If you are in the market for a new handset anyway, a little 5G futureproofing is certainly a good idea. That way you’ll be set for when 5G becomes much more widespread over the coming years.

5G is perfectly safe. Ignore the conspiracy theories, they’re based on a complete lack of understanding of physics and how wireless frequencies work.

How fast is 5G?

There’s always a difference between theoretical maximum speeds and those that consumers end up receiving. With 5G, network bandwidth can hit up to 10Gbps but for consumers this likely means speeds in the 50Mbps to 100Mbps region as a minimum. Although that could certainly hit closer to 1Gbps in low congestion areas with a nearby mmWave access point. We’ve clocked speeds as high as 500Mbps in our testing, but that’s the exception, not the rule. We’ve also experienced highly variable 5G speeds on some US networks that are no better than 4G, due to patchy coverage even over just short distances.

So how much faster is 5G than 4G? That depends on your specific network, signal strength, and even the modem and technology inside your handset. That’s right, different phones have different maximum speeds. There are already some very fast 4G LTE networks out there too and 5G mmWave can be very temperamental with line-of-sight. So exact speed comparisons are difficult.

In theory, 5G is anywhere from 5x to 10x faster than current 4G networks. In the future, 5G could end up 20x faster or even higher. However, independent research in 2023 highlighted the spotty nature and 5G coverage and speeds in there here and now.

According to the data, typical US data speeds fell in the region of 30Mbps in 2023. That’s only around 10Mbps faster than pre-5G speeds in 2023, hardly the revolution we were promised.
