Pandemic Forces Some Popular Comm Ave and Kenmore Square Restaurants to Close In some cases, new eateries will take their placeIt’s been almost six months since most of us have been on campus and you might notice that Comm Ave and Kenmore Square are looking a little different. The coronavirus pandemic forced many local businesses to shut their doors for good; the Massachusetts Restaurant Association recently reported the same fate for about 20 percent of the state’s eateries.
We’ve put together a list of some of the popular spots near BU’s campus that have, sadly, closed down, either temporarily or permanently.
Ready for some good news? A few new restaurants have already announced plans to open in the vacated spaces.
Closed…but there may be something new comingBlue State Coffee closed when COVID cases began to rise in March. The coffee chain did reopen its branches in New Haven and Providence, but our local spot near Agganis Arena has remained shuttered and is no longer listed on Blue State’s website. Since 2010, the café had offered a welcoming and relaxing space to students, faculty, and staff, who often met in small groups to study or chat. Known for its creative coffee drinks and light lunch options, Blue State was also deeply community-oriented: with each purchase, it handed out wooden coins that could be used to vote for a local nonprofit it would support. Some of its recipients were the Greater Boston Food Bank, the Cambridge Women’s Center, the Boston Natural Areas Network, and the Match Charter School.
Popular student haunt T’s Pub announced it would close before the pandemic hit. A Korean barbecue restaurant is set to open in the space. Photo by Chynna Benson (CGS’18, COM’20)
Before the pandemic hit, popular student haunt T’s Pub announced it would close this spring. The first inkling, back in January, was the news that the pub was looking to transfer its liquor license. T’s Pub opened in 1971 and was a favorite with both students and local Allstonians. Between its karaoke sessions, trivia nights, and big game broadcasts, the pub’s welcoming and energetic environment was a real draw. Guests also devoured the classic bar food on its menu, like chicken wings and nachos.
Korean barbecue restaurant Gopchang Story is set to open in its place. According to the restaurant’s website, it specializes in dishes made from small intestines of pigs and cattle, either grilled, boiled in soup, or made into sausages.
This udon noodle restaurant opened less than two years ago. The primary draw was its udon bowls, with varieties like curry, miso, and vegetable tempura. Love Art Udon was also known for displaying works by local artists around the restaurant, including a mural of Tokyo subway cars. A statement on its website says that customers who have gift cards can still use them at the restaurant’s branches in Kenmore Square and the West End, as well as its sushi sister restaurants Love Art Sushi and Poke By Love Art, which remain open.
Scoozi shut its doors in late 2023. Taking over the spot with its first US branch is Chinese hotpot chain Shu DaXia. Photo by Maddie Malhotra (COM’19)
The hot pot chain Shu DaXia, based in China’s Sichuan province, is scheduled to open its first American branch at the address, although no opening date has been announced. According to its website, its traditional Sichuan hot pot dishes will primarily consist of cattle stomach, viscera, and vegetables.
The 123-year-old Hotel Buckminster announced in April that it was closing permanently. Photo by Cydney Scott
This historic Kenmore Square hotel closed permanently in April after freezing operations at the beginning of the pandemic. The hotel, opened in 1897, had a long and storied history. It was where the plot to fix the 1919 World Series was hatched, and 20 years later it housed Italian prisoners during World War II. In the 1950s, George Wein (CAS’50) opened the jazz club Storyville on the ground floor and hosted performances by iconic artists like Billie Holiday, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, and Louis Armstrong.
The Kenmore Uno’s, in the same building as Hotel Buckminster, permanently closed in June after 30 years. It was the chain’s last branch in Boston. According to a spokesperson, various factors caused it to close, including the Buckminster closure and the lack of BU students on campus and of fans attending Red Sox games. Uno’s drew a large Fenway crowd before and after games, making for a vibrant place to nosh. The restaurant was known for its flavorful Chicago-style deep-dish pizzas.
Kenmore’s fanciest restaurant, Eastern Standard, shuttered in mid-March, and a lease dispute may prevent it from reopening. Photo by Cydney Scott
Eastern Standard, which made its home in the Hotel Commonwealth since 2005, shut down operations in March and has yet to reopen. According to the Boston Globe, after years of negotiations, owner Garrett Harker has not reached a lease agreement with the real estate group that owns the space; the pandemic’s economic impacts have only further strained their talks. For 15 years, the brasserie attracted Bostonians celebrating a special occasion or wanting to sip a fancy cocktail at its marble bar, the longest in the city. Boston University played an important role in financing the restaurant’s opening before transferring its share to Harker in 2011.
The Hawthorne is in the same boat as siser restaurant Eastern Standard, unable to reach a compromise with the landlords over its lease. The 18-seat cocktail lounge offered some great mixed drinks, like the Commodity, tequila, strawberry Campari, East India sherry, and lemon, ciders, rums, and a vast array of beers. It won Tales of the Cocktail’s 2023 award for best American hotel bar and has been listed in the Food Network, Bevvy, and Thrillist as one of the top bars in the city and country.
Island Creek was the third restaurant in the Hotel Commonwealth to close, but its Burlington location has reopened. The upscale seafood spot has been known for its raw bar, creative entrées, and innovative drinks since 2010.
This counter service Mexican eatery opened near West Campus just over a year ago, but unfortunately had to close earlier this year. It is unclear whether and when it will reopen. Taqueria el Barrio was a popular destination for students and staff for its tasty and affordable array of tacos, quesadillas, tortas, and Mexican plates, which you could customize with your choice of protein, along with beans, tortillas, and guacamole. It also offered some great authentic Mexican sodas and freshly fried churros.
Pho Common is temporarily closed and has not released information on whether it will reopen. This traditional Vietnamese pho restaurant opened in February 2023 and served its soup dishes with the customer’s choice of meats on the side.
Reopened or new to the areaAfter closing its doors earlier this year, Sunset Cantina welcomed diners back on September 5. The Mexican restaurant, typically packed on weekends, is famous for its nachos, which you can customize with toppings of chili, black beans, chicken, pulled pork, or steak. Buzzfeed and Thrillist have described them as the best in the country. But there are plenty of other great items on the menu as well. The restaurant’s smoking fajitas, with Poblano, bell peppers, and onions mixed with tomatillo green salsa, is also an immensely popular choice. For those 21 and over, Sunset offers a wide assortment of draft beers, margaritas, and cocktails.
Fast food chain Taco Bell is set to open up a cantina-style location, although the exact opening date isn’t yet known. While fast food will be available, customers will also have the option of sit-down dining, and this branch will serve alcoholic beverages.
This Japanese chain opened inside the Hotel Commonwealth this January. Tsurutontan is known for its fresh, homemade udon noodles, made with flour from Japan. Some of its menu standouts: the Maki, a spicy tuna roll ($8), and the stir-fried sukiyaki udon ($18). You should also try the bar bites, like the grilled duck breast or the assorted shrimp tempura, each just $12.
Just a few steps away from Charlesgate Park, the Kenmore opened its doors last October. Its dishes are affordable and tasty, and among the selection of burgers are the smokehouse burger ($7.95) (with bacon, barbecue sauce, coleslaw, fried onions, and cheddar), the pub burger ($7.95) (bacon, ground cherry peppers, and the restaurant’s special “K” sauce), and the “Beyond Meat” vegetable burger ($8.50) (a veggie pattie, with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and fresh herbs). On the side, we recommend pork fried rice ($9.95) served with a sunnyside egg and ginger sweet soy sauce, or the vegetarian-friendly fried brussel sprouts with buffalo and blue cheese sauces. The menu also features several draft beers, like Allagash White ($7.50), and wine ($9 a glass). The Kenmore is open for brunch on weekends, too.

Discussing The Scary Word ‘Pandemic’
Discussing the Scary Word ‘Pandemic’ Public Health prof David Ozonoff is keeping cool, but yes, he’s worried
People in Mexico were wearing face masks in public yesterday. Photo by hmerinomx
As swine flu continues to spread, the World Health Organization yesterday raised its alert level to Phase 4, indicating that “the likelihood of a pandemic has increased, but not that a pandemic is inevitable.” Phase 6 would mean that a global pandemic is under way.
This morning, two elementary school boys from Lowell, Massachusetts who had recently returned from a trip to Mexico were confirmed to have swine flu. They are the state’s first confirmed cases. About 200,000 doses of antiviral medications are being shipped to the state from the national stockpile.
All schools and universities in Mexico have been closed, canceling classes for 13 Boston University students currently in the Guadalajara Engineering Program until at least May 6 (just before finals were scheduled to take place). The study-abroad program officially ends on May 21. Joseph Finkhouse, director of institutional relations for BU International Programs, says that while BU is not encouraging students in Mexico to leave early, the University is offering to help those who wish to do so with travel agent services and by “working with them to make sure they’re not penalized academically.”
Reached by e-mail yesterday afternoon, several students in the Guadalajara program said that they were hoping to leave by week’s end. David McBride, director of Student Health Services, recommends that any students returning from Mexico not come to campus immediately, but “go directly home if at all possible” and remain there for a week to ensure that they are flu-free.
For insights into the swine flu scare, BU Today put some questions to epidemiologist David Ozonoff, a School of Public Health professor of environmental health.
More information about swine flu is available from the CDC and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Pigs infected with H1N1 get sick, but it usually doesn’t pass to humans. Every year, the CDC gets a report of one or two cases of people infected with swine flu, but in recent years it’s been a couple or three. And there have been instances — in 1976 and 1988 — when there was a small outbreak with human-to-human transmission, but it burned itself out after one generation. The current situation seems to be different. It’s probable that several generations of this virus have been passed through human-to-human transmission, and it seems to be more easily transmissible.
There’s an old saying about a lot of things: if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. That’s not true with influenza. This is an incredibly unpredictable, tricky virus.
Our surge capacity, the reserve of staffed beds in our inpatient facilities, is less than it was a few decades ago, because we’ve been trying to cut the cost of health care by eliminating unnecessary hospitalization. The system is much more brittle today. In the summer, Boston’s city emergency rooms will be on diversion, meaning an ambulance will pull up and they’ll divert it to another place because they’re full. A bad flu overwhelms things; a pandemic would really be bad.
But most public health work in the United States is done at the state and local level. And we’re going to hear a lot about suspect cases. Most of them are probably not swine flu. State and local authorities are also involved in thinking ahead and planning.

The Workplace Gender Gap And How We Can Close It
How to create gender equality in the workplace
Legal changes aside, companies can focus on cultural and organizational changes to reduce gender inequality. It is not enough to simply hire more women, although that is a start. Businesses must make an effort to both close the gender gap and make their workplaces truly inclusive, since diversity alone doesn’t create inclusive workplaces.
1. Focus on diversity during your recruitment process.Creating gender equality in the workplace starts with your recruitment process. Work toward a diverse and equitable workplace by creating accurate and inclusive job descriptions, sourcing a gender-diverse candidate pipeline, and conducting fair interviews. It’s important to ensure your hiring process is free of internal bias. These measures should be taken for every level of seniority; however, they are especially important for executive positions.
McKinsey’s statistics show that men currently hold roughly 60% of manager positions, while women hold only 40%. This representational disparity increases with each step up the corporate ladder. For example, in the C-suite, only 1 in 4 executives are women, while fewer than 1 in 25 are women of color. Businesses can address gender equality by hiring more senior-level female workers.
2. Create fair compensation and promotion procedures.Create an employee compensation program that is fair, equitable and transparent. Offer your employees equal pay for equal work, regardless of their gender. This is one of the most obvious and easy ways you can work towards gender equality in your workplace. Offering competitive and fair pay is also a great way to attract and retain top talent.
Tip
Create an employee compensation plan that includes a variety of direct and indirect types of compensation.
Additionally, businesses should focus on promoting qualified women from within. Create a standard set of evaluation and promotion procedures that allow hardworking women to move up the corporate ladder. While this can reduce the current gender gap that exists, everybody benefits from transparent evaluation and promotion procedures, not just women and minorities.
3. Offer flexible and supportive employee benefits. The McKinsey study found that employee burnout is one of the largest stressors currently impacting women in the workplace. Since the pandemic, women are disproportionately affected by burnout, stress and exhaustion compared to their male counterparts. What’s more, 1 in 3 women said they considered downshifting their career or leaving the workforce.
Companies can reduce stress by offering comprehensive benefits and more opportunities for better work-life balance, such as better access to child care and greater acceptance of flexible work arrangements (remote work, hybrid work and flexible scheduling). This can reduce burnout among women and allow qualified mothers to play a more active role in the corporate world.
4. Create a diversity and inclusion training program.Train your employees on what is and isn’t acceptable in the workplace. Have your employees attend a diversity training program customized to your business to address potential biases and prejudices within your organization. This can also encourage your employees to move from awareness to action in terms of allyship.
FYI
Diversity training should not be a one-time event. Instead, you should create a diversity training program that incorporates multiple lessons, events, and opportunities for continued learning.
5. Hold managers accountable.According to Price, companies must become assertive about gender diversity and treat it as an integral part of their business strategies. She suggested tying supervisors’ bonuses to diversity and inclusion objectives.
“It is important for companies to track, measure, and hold managers accountable for diversity and inclusion efforts,” Price said. “If this important business metric is not tracked, we may never see any improvement.”
6. Build an inclusive company culture. To bridge the gap, companies must create a culture where employees feel a sense of belonging and acceptance. They should focus on improving their cultures to increase inclusion and enhance employee experience and engagement. Along with creating gender equality, Price said fostering inclusivity can spur innovation, retain valuable talent and reduce attrition rates.
Women can also benefit from working with other women. According to McKinsey, 1 in 5 women said they were often the only woman, or one of the only women, in the room at work. This was twice as common for senior-level women and women in technical roles. Women who are “onlys” have a significantly worse experience than women who work with other women, and about 80% of them receive microaggressions, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative prejudicial slights and insults.
“Women who commonly encounter microaggressions are more likely to leave the workplace, encounter sexual harassment at work, and have their qualifications challenged,” Price said.
A work environment that is not only diverse but inclusive is an integral part of reducing the gender gap. Price said that for businesses to truly benefit from the myriad backgrounds in the global economy, they must make room for everyone in their companies and empower them to speak up. Companies must take bolder steps to create inclusive cultures so that women, and all employees, feel supported at their workplaces.
7. Pay attention to political changes. There are current federal and state laws intended to eliminate the gender gap and provide equal opportunities for men and women. For example, the Equal Pay Act of 1963 prohibits wage disparity based on sex. However, as we get closer to a world with gender equality in the workplace, look out for any potential legal changes that arise.
How companies benefit from bridging the gender gapThe CNBC and SurveyMonkey Workforce Survey about workforce happiness revealed that nearly 80% of respondents believe diversity and inclusion are important in the workplace; however, nearly one-quarter of workers say their company is not doing enough to address those things.
Employees want to work in an environment where they feel valued and treated fairly. Focusing on diversity, equity and inclusion to bridge the gender gap can be key to attracting and retaining top talent.
A diverse and inclusive workforce fosters greater employee engagement, which in turn can increase financial returns and market share. Engaged employees tend to feel more energized and connected to their organization, and they are often willing to go the extra mile to maximize productivity. High employee engagement is also linked to higher employee retention, which saves money on recruitment costs.
Providing your employees with an inclusive and equitable space to be creative is ideal for innovation. A diverse workforce brings a unique set of ideas and perspectives to the table, and an inclusive culture that allows those voices equal opportunity to be heard is great for creating new solutions. The key to this is being both diverse and inclusive.
“It is time we all acknowledge that having a diverse and inclusive workforce is good for business,” Price said. “The numbers simply don’t lie.”

How To Close Game Or App On Ps5
In order to enjoy smooth and lag-free gameplay on PS5, closing games after finishing is mandatory.
It’s true that when you shut down the PlayStation, all the running games and apps turn off automatically. But it’s not the right way. By continuously doing this, a random bug will create without your knowledge, which will freeze your game while you play.
Here, I will explain two proper methods to shut down a game or app.
So, tag along.
How to Close Games and Applications on PS5
To close any games or apps on PS5, press the PS button on your Playstation 5 Dualsense controller. Highlight or go over to the game or application you want to close. Press the Options button on your controller and select the Close Game or Close App option.
Looks easy, right? However, you can check the steps below, where I have provided the steps with images.
The problem may occur if the games are stuck or freeze. Don’t worry. There is a way to close the game in that situation. I have explained that later in this article.
Now, let’s see how to close games with the PS5 controller.
Here are the methods to turn off a game & application on PS5:
1. From the PS5 Home Menu
Press the PS Button on your controller to return to the home menu.
Go over the game or app you want to close.
Press the Options button on your controller.
Select the Close Game or Close App option.
The games or apps will close.
Here’s a complete guide on how to fix PS5 not downloading games.
2. From The Switcher Function
Press the PlayStation button to open the quick menu.
Select the Switcher option. There you can see which games and apps are still active and have recently been used.
Go to the game or apps you want to close.
Press the Options button.
Select Close Game or Close App.
The games and applications that are running in the background will be closed. When you open another game from the switcher or turn off your PS5, it automatically turns off other running games.
But if you keep the PS5 in Rest Mode, it won’t close your recently played games. You may resume playing a game where you left off by keeping it in Rest Mode.
The two methods work when the PS5 is running. You must also know how to shut down the PS5 games when it freezes or gets stuck.
In that case, you can’t shut down any games or apps using your controller. You have to do it from the PS5 console.
Press and hold the power button of the console until it shuts down. 7 to 10 seconds should be enough to shut down the console. Don’t remove the pressure from the power button until you hear the beeping twice. Once you hear the beeps, both the console and the game will shut down.
Once it’s off, give it a rest for a while. Turn it back on by pressing the power button. Now your PlayStation 5 should run without any drawbacks.
Quickly check our epic post on PS5 1080p 120hz not working.
Final Thought
As you can see, it doesn’t take more than ten to fifteen seconds to close any game. So, don’t turn off your PS5 while there is a game still running. It can negatively affect both the console and the games.
I hope you successfully close all the games and other applications without complications.
Comment below if you have any questions.
Peace!
Razer Book 13 Review: So Close To Greatness
See also: The best Razer laptops you can buy right now
Some of the “gamer” aesthetic Razer is so well-known for makes its way to this ultrabook. However, this is definitely not a gaming laptop. If you’re looking for an ultra-slim laptop for gaming, you will want a Blade Stealth. The Razer Book 13 is a different beast altogether.
But if it’s not for gaming, then what is it good for? Let’s dive in.
Razer Book 13
See price at Amazon
About this Razer Book 13 review: I tested the Razer Book 13 over the course of a week. It is the 2023 version of the laptop with an 11th-gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. I purchased the laptop myself.
What you need to know about the Razer Book 13
C. Scott Brown / Android Authority
i5/8GB/256GB Razer Book 13: $1,199/£1,199/€1,299
i7/16GB/256GB Razer Book 13: $1,599/£1,579/€1,699
i7/16GB/512GB Razer Book 13: $1,999/£1,999/€1,999
The Razer Book 13 is Razer first attempt to make a laptop for the general market. Pretty much every other Razer laptop is focused on gaming. Most come with high-end graphics cards, some come with high refresh rate displays, and all come with customizable Chroma lighting.
This laptop, though, relies on integrated graphics — even if you spring for the high-end model. The display refresh rate is the usual 60Hz. Of course, it still has per-key Chroma support because Razer isn’t about to drop all of its identity, now is it?
Underneath the laptop’s backplate, you’ll find a vapor-chamber cooling system. This will help keep the device from overheating on your lap while you work. Incidentally, this is where you’ll also find the easily upgradable M.2 SSD.
Finally, as mentioned earlier, the Razer Book 13 has per-key RGB lighting. You almost never see this in productivity laptops. That should help prevent you from being all business all the time with this machine.
How’s the screen?
C. Scott Brown / Android Authority
At 1,920 x 1,200, the display of this model isn’t as crisp as it could be. There is a more expensive 4K option, but having that many pixels requires a trade-off in battery life. The battery capacities of all three models in the Razer Book 13 line are the same (55WHr), so only go 4K if you desperately need it. Keep in mind that the M.2 SSD is also easily upgradeable. So if you can live without 4K, you are essentially spending $400 extra just to get more storage.
How’s the battery life?
C. Scott Brown / Android Authority
At the end of last year, Apple caused a firestorm with the launch of its M1 chip. The ARM-based processor boasted incredibly fast speeds while simultaneously sipping on the battery. Pretty much all laptop battery life comparisons fell short of the M1 Macs.
How is the keyboard? What about the touchpad?
How does the Razer Book 13 perform?
C. Scott Brown / Android Authority
It should come as little surprise that the 11th-gen Intel Core i7 in this unit is a total monster. I saw not one hiccup or performance issues whatsoever.
I’ve been getting back into making music recently and installed Cubase 10.5 on the Razer Book 13. I loaded up about a dozen virtual instruments and 16 audio tracks all with multiple plug-ins. The machine barely even got warm during playback and the export of that session.
Unless you have niche needs, the Book 13 will very likely be able to keep up with whatever you want.
Of course, we couldn’t skip bringing up gaming in a review for a Razer laptop. To test out how the integrated Iris Xe graphics hold up, I played the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 3. The game played pretty well considering the lack of a GPU. However, I needed to bump down the graphics quality and the bottom of the laptop got pretty hot. Still, I could play the game without issue.
This shouldn’t be that surprising though. The Razer Book 13 is not a true gaming laptop. Still, it’s nice to know that if you really want to game on it, you have options.
Design: I love the way this laptop looks and feels. Its tiny footprint belies its power and versatility.
Battery life: There are laptops out there with better battery life, true, but seven hours of usage without a charge is nothing to complain about.
Display: I am a true convert to the 16:10 aspect ratio now. The extra bit screen real estate makes a big difference with my workday tasks. Plus, the display gets so bright that working outside would be possible.
Processing: With plenty of RAM and an 11th-gen CPU, the Razer Book 13 cuts through tasks like a hot knife through butter.
RGB keys: While this isn’t a gaming laptop, it’s nice that Razer kept its signature per-key RGB Chroma function here. It’s not a make-or-break feature by any means, but it’s a unique perk that most other productivity laptops don’t have.
What I don’t like about the Razer Book 13
Keyboard: Without a doubt, the keyboard is the worst aspect of this laptop. The travel and accuracy are so poor that they drag this machine down significantly.
Webcam: A laptop that costs this much shouldn’t have a bad webcam, but this one does. To be fair, the webcam is incredibly small and tucked tightly into very thin bezels. Still, that didn’t stop Dell from offering better-quality imaging with the XPS 13 series.
Price: Unless you’re fine with forgoing a touch screen, this laptop starts at $1,599. That’s a lot of money, especially when you factor in the other two issues described here. For the next iteration of the Razer Book 13, the company either needs to up its hardware game or drop the price, because that much money simply isn’t worth it.
Razer Book 13 review: The verdict
C. Scott Brown / Android Authority
As mentioned earlier, this is not the laptop for gamers. If you’re a gamer and you’re looking for a powerful laptop with a great GPU, even the most expensive Razer Book 13 is going to fall short.
That being said, this laptop would be a fine machine for someone who wants a great-looking work laptop with plenty of power and battery life. The display won’t let you down, even if you don’t spring for the 4K model.
