Facebook details big plans for a ‘privacy-focused’ platform

On Wednesday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a radical change in focus for the beleaguered social media company, stating that it will shift to a privacy-focused platform emphasizing end-to-end encryption, increased user control over personal data, and more. Facebook has a very poor reputation when it comes to user security, an issue underscored by the Cambridge Analytica scandal that surfaced in early 2023.

Though Facebook has taken arguably minimal steps toward improving user control over data and increasing message privacy, many changes have largely been reactive, happening only after a new leak or scandal highlighted additional problematic issues or practices.

Not sure what cloud computing is, or how it can benefit your business? In this article, I’ll introduce you to the cloud, help you interpret the buzzwords, and explain how your business might save time and money using a cloud hosting service such as Windows Azure, Amazon EC2, or Rackspace.

Discovering the Cloud and Cloud Computing

People use “cloud” as a buzzword when describing either the Internet or an intranet in association with some type of service or application offering. When you hear the term “public cloud,” think of the Internet; when you hear “private cloud,” think of your company’s intranet. Usually, “cloud” by itself refers to the public cloud.

The phrase “cloud computing” refers to Internet or intranet applications and services that you typically access, run, or manage via a Web browser. Such services often don’t require you to install software on your computer.

Here’s another way to look at it: Cloud computing is the delivery of computing as a service rather than as a product. Instead of purchasing, installing, and running a program on your local computers, the program runs on the provider’s computers, and you pay a monthly or yearly fee for access.

You can find three main types of cloud computing service providers.

Software as a Service (SaaS) providers, such as Google Docs, Microsoft Office 365, and Salesforce, are services designed for end users. As such, they represent the end result of cloud computing.

Platform as a Service (PaaS) offerings, such as Windows Azure, are services that IT personnel use in application development and for providing applications (SaaS) and Web hosting to end users. Basically, your IT staff gets remote access to virtual computers hosted at the provider’s data centers. PaaS providers typically offer a managed Windows or Linux operating system, which means that your business can dedicate more resources to development and fewer to configuring and maintaining the OS. The trade-off is that your IT personnel will have less control over the underlying OS.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) providers, such as Amazon EC2 and Rackspace Cloud Hosting, are similar to PaaS providers, but they usually offer your IT personnel more control over the OS. Although they typically don’t provide automatic OS updates, your business can use the raw infrastructure to develop and deploy applications on pretty much any platform or OS.

PaaS and IaaS Providers

I’ll focus on PaaS and IaaS providers here. If you’re familiar with the concept of virtual computing, you might think of these services as providing virtual machines (like VMware or VirtualBox) via the Internet.

PaaS and IaaS providers supply access to their shared data centers, giving you the reliability, redundancy, and security of a global enterprise data center network. This saves you time and money, because you don’t need to purchase and set up servers from scratch, and you pay only for the resources you consume. These services are particularly cost-effective for short-term projects, but they also deliver scalable, on-demand resources. For instance, within minutes you can double the amount of memory that your website might need to respond to a surge of end users.

One of the drawbacks of using a cloud computing host is that your data resides on another party’s servers. This arrangement might raise privacy and security issues for companies dealing with sensitive data, but you can mitigate the risk by employing data encryption and choosing a cloud host with security certifications and accreditations.

Most PaaS and IaaS providers offer per-hour pricing for each instance, role, or server. Each of these is, in essence, a separate virtual computer on which you can run one, a few, or even hundreds of applications.

Windows Azure

The PaaS platform Windows Azure can supply and manage the operating system, which is great if your applications don’t require a specialized OS. You can concentrate on building, deploying, and managing cloud applications without worrying about OS updates and patches.

Windows Azure offers three main roles, or OS choices.

Web role: This Windows Azure-supplied OS, preloaded with Internet Information Services 7, permits the development of applications using Web technologies such as chúng tôi PHP, and Node.js.

Microsoft’s service level agreement guarantees 99.95 percent uptime for its compute services when you have at least two instances of a role running.

SQL Azure provides a scalable relational cloud database service built on SQL Server technologies that Windows Azure applications or your on-premises applications can use. It supports exporting and ongoing synchronization with your on-premises databases. You can pay as you go, or make a six-month commitment for reduced pricing; in either case, you can purchase this feature independently or along with other Windows Azure platform products.

Microsoft’s cloud storage lets you store structured or unstructured data for use with your Windows Azure applications or other applications via REST and managed APIs. You can also mount storage as virtual hard drives inside your Windows Azure applications by using the Windows Azure Drive feature, and you can move your virtual hard drives between private and public clouds. Microsoft offers pay-as-you-go pricing for Windows Azure Storage and Windows Azure Drive.

It is a widely used algorithm in various fields such as digital signal processing, image processing, and telecommunications. The IFFT is a powerful tool for analyzing signals and detecting patterns in complex data sets.

The FFT was first introduced in 1965 by Cooley and Tukey as a faster alternative to the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). The algorithm gained widespread use in the scientific community due to its ability to efficiently calculate Fourier Transforms of large datasets. The IFFT was later developed as the inverse of the FFT, allowing for the reconstruction of time-domain signals from their frequency domain representation.

Key concepts and principles

The IFFT is based on the principles of the Fourier Transform, which is a mathematical technique used to analyze signals and extract information about their frequency content. Have you ever run into problems where the data layer provided the right information, but it wasn’t in the format you could use?

A data layer includes all of the information you want to pass to Google Tag Manager into the data layer, and triggers can be set up based on the variables’ values or specific events.

Understanding the Data Layer

We have large quantities of built-in data in our data layer. However, we might only want to pull specific information according to our needs. 

The built-in data layer variable may not be useful in such instances, as the variable can only pull specific key-pair values.

Moreover, a built-in variable can’t transform the data according to your Tag needs. 

This is where we can use the power of custom JavaScript to accomplish our goals. 

We recommend that you learn the basics of JavaScript to follow along with this guide. 

Moreover, we’ll also provide you with Tags, triggers, or variables and their codes that you may need to follow this tutorial.

Let’s open our Google Tag Manager account. We have already put our browser into preview and debug mode.

But before we start, let’s go through some examples of transforming the data layer. 

Transforming the Data Layer

The most important aspect of pulling the information from the data layer is to transform the data layer into the right format. 

Let’s open a page to understand the format of the data layer. 

We’ve opened the Thank You page on our website. 

As we’re in preview and debug mode, we can access the Data Layer from the quick preview window on the browser. 

This is a custom data layer. Our transaction event data contains various key-pair values of the data. 

There are two different ways of deploying the data into Google Analytics. This particular format of data is called classic or Standard eCommerce tracking. 

There is also an Enhanced eCommerce tracking system. 

Both of these methods require different types of implementation of the data layer. 

Unfortunately, these tracking methods are not compatible with each other. 

So if you want to switch over from the classic eCommerce tracking system provided in the GTM data layer, you’ll need to reimplement the enhanced eCommerce tracking system. 

Your data will still remain the same, but just in a different format. 

We have come up with a solution to switch data formats without reimplementing the complete data. 

It’s a script that is built with the help of variables. So let’s open Variables and configure them. 

You can download our data layer transform template. Upload those templates to your GTM account. 

Let’s take an example of a custom JavaScript variable. 

It takes the input of the transaction values from the data layer, goes through various products, and pushes that data into an enhanced eCommerce checking object. 

In general terms, we’ll transform our standard eCommerce data layer into an enhanced eCommerce checking object. 

You can verify its output by navigating to the transaction → Variables section in the GTM preview window of your browser. 

We can use this enhanced eCommerce tracking object to send the transaction data to Google Analytics. 

You can easily perform this action by altering the data course in your Tags. 

Navigate to your transaction event Tag, and modify the enhanced eCommerce features to read the data from the variable, instead of using the data layer. 

This way, we can use the enhanced eCommerce tracking with the help of our transformed data layer into an enhanced eCommerce tracking object. 

This is just one example of taking the data and transforming it according to our specific needs. 

You can also piece together certain data points from the data layer itself and format them in your chosen format. 

Let’s see how! 

Formatting the Data Layer Ready for Output

In our example, we have enhanced eCommerce tracking data layer installed for a Thank You page on the website. 

We’ll pull specific product details to push them into an array. 

This can be very important in certain situations. 

Along with the currency values, we’ll also need the data of the purchased products on the website. 

We have different product IDs that can be transferred by using a code. We need to access them and transfer them into the correct format. 

We solved this problem by creating a custom JavaScript variable that can pull out the correct product IDs from the given data layer. 

First, let’s access the enhanced eCommerce tracking data layer, access the purchase summary through it, and then access the product ID. 

Our path will be to access eCommerce tracking → purchase → products. 

Finally, we’ll configure a for loop in our code that accesses all the products and pushes the IDs back to our array. 

Additionally, we’ll add a return function following the for loop.
