NVIDIA has outed Lenovo’s latest 3D capable display, the L2363d, running at Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution and capable not only of playing back 3D but recording it thanks to dual webcams. The Lenovo L2363d supports 3D photos and 3D web-conferencing, as long as you have NVIDIA’s 3D Vision specs.

There’s also the Lenovo IdeaCentre K330 PC, a 3D-capable desktop using NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX460 GPU. Lenovo is, unsurprisingly, hoping you buy them both together. No word on full specifications as yet, since NVIDIA is only gloating about the 3D Vision tech, but we’re guessing it’s a similar – albeit updated – version to the K330 Lenovo outed back in December.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 hands-on and first impressions

Windows 8 officially launched last week, which means that a ton of new computers, laptops, and tablets are either on shelves now or coming up soon. By far one of the most interesting new Windows 8 machines is the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13, a new convertible that aims to show off Windows 8 in all of its touch-based glory. The major selling point of the Yoga 13 is its 360-degree hinge, which allows you to use the laptop in a number of different ways. It’s certainly cool, if not a little strange at first.

If you couldn’t already tell, I haven’t used very many convertibles. I was never really sold on the idea of a tablet/laptop hybrid, but with what I’ve seen of the IdeaPad Yoga 13, I might be singing a different tune by the time everything is said and done. The Yoga 13 impresses right out of the box – the silver chassis looks sleek, and I was actually surprised by how light it is. I was certainly expecting heavier than 3.3 pounds, though with that weight, the Yoga 13 still has some heft that you won’t find in traditional ultrabooks.

The screen is really nice as well, though again a little unconventional as far as ultrabook screens go. Instead of running at the 1366×768 resolution we’re all so bored with, the Yoga 13’s touch screen is running at 1600×900 resolution. It’s an odd resolution that we don’t see to often in notebooks, but it’s a welcome change. The visuals are sharp and touch is responsive. This plays hand-in-hand with the touch-friendly tiles in Windows 8; even when using the Yoga 13 in notebook mode, I’m finding myself using the touch screen instead of the track pad. I said in my Windows 8 review that the operating system was clearly geared toward touch screens, and the Yoga 13 backs that assertion up.

There are four different “modes” Lenovo has been pushing with the Yoga 13: notebook mode, which is self-explanatory; stand mode, which allows the user to place the keyboard face-down with the screen angled upward; tent mode, which has the user standing the laptop up on its ends like a little mini tent; and tablet mode, achieved by folding the screen all the way around to the underside of the notebook. Tablet mode feels a little strange at first due to the fact that the keyboard is exposed on the slate’s backside, but thankfully the keyboard and trackpad are both disabled when you’re using a mode other than the traditional notebook setup. This means that you don’t have to worry about hitting keys and screwing everything up while using the machine in tablet mode.

I’m impressed with what I’ve seen of the IdeaPad Yoga 13 so far. There are certainly aspects that are going to take some getting used to, but I’m looking forward to spending more time with the Yoga 13 and seeing all that it and its 360-degree hinge have to offer. My full review of the IdeaPad Yoga 13 will be coming up shortly, but in the meantime, let me know if there’s anything in particular you’d like me to touch on.

To use reference in Excel, we can choose the same cell or range of cells from different sheets by selecting the worksheet’s name. Example #1

Let us assume we have a list of prices for a group of products in Sheet 1, which has been renamed “Price List”, as shown below.

Now, we also have the number of products sold or the Sales Volume defined in another tab – Sheet 2, which has been renamed to Sales Volume.

Now we wish to calculate the total sales for each product in Sheet 3, renamed Total Sales.

The next step is to go to Cell B2 and type the formula = after this, we need to change the reference to sheet 1, where the price list is defined. Once the cell reference has been set, we will need to select the price for the first product; in this case, it is Product 1.

As we can see, in the function bar, we have the cell reference pointing to the Price List sheet, which is the first sheet. On closer examination, it refers to the Price List sheet and cell B2, the Sales of Product 1.

Now we need to put an asterisk (*) in the formula. Asterisk is the symbol for multiplication. We need to multiply Sales by the number of products sold to calculate the total sales for a product.

We need to change the cell reference to the second sheet – Sales Volume. Once we have changed the cell reference, we must select Quantity for Product 1.

Now we need to drag the formula to the rest of the rows in the table, and we will get the results for all the other products.

So basically, in the above example, we successfully gave references from two different sheets (Price List and Sales Volume) and pulled the data to calculate the total sales in a third sheet (Total Sales). This concept is called 3D Cell Reference.

Example #2

Now suppose we have a student’s data. We have his half-yearly and quarterly test scores for five subjects. Our objective is to calculate the total marks in a third sheet. So, we have the quarterly test scores for a student in five subjects, as shown below.

We also have the Quarter 2 test scores, as shown below.

We also have the Half Yearly test scores, as shown below.

Now we wish to calculate the total test scores in another worksheet using 3D Referencing in Excel. To do that, we will apply the formula as follows:

First, we shall write “=” for Marks in the Total Scores tab for the first subject, i.e., Physics.

Next, we shall change the cell reference to Quarter 1 and then select the marks for Physics from that tab.

Next, we shall add a “+” sign in the formula to add the next item to the Quarter 1 score. To do this, we shall change the cell reference using the 3D reference to the Quarter 2 tab and select the Quarter 2 marks for physics.

Next, we shall again add the “+” sign to the formula to add the next item, i.e., the Half Yearly score. To do that, we shall again change the cell reference by using the 3D reference to the Half Yearly tab and select the half-yearly score for Physics.

Now that we have the summation of all the scores for this student in Physics, we shall press enter key to get the total score.

Now, we shall drag this formula to the rest of the rows in the table to replicate the summation across all the subjects.

Example #3

So far, we have seen a 3D reference for performing calculations. But we aren’t limited to just that. We can use the 3D reference to make charts and tables as well. In this example, we shall demonstrate how to create a simple chart using this concept.

Suppose we have the sales data for a company.

We shall use this data to create a simple chart in another worksheet. So, we shall create a new tab, rename it to “Chart”, and go to the Insert tab in the ribbon on the top. Here, we shall select the Insert Column or Bar chart.

Next, we shall select a simple 2-D Clustered Column chart.

We shall get a dialog box to select the chart data source.

Here we shall select the source data from the Sales Data tab. We shall select the range of cells where we have defined the Sales for each product.

Thus, we have successfully created the chart by using the 3D reference.

Things to Remember

The data must be in the same format or pattern in all the tabs.

Even if the referenced worksheet or the cells in the referenced cell range are altered, moved, or deleted, Excel will continue to refer to the same reference. In case of alterations, moving, or deletion, it will result in the cell reference evaluating to NULL if appropriate values are not found.

Even if we add one or more tabs between the referenced and final worksheets, it will change the result as Excel will continue to refer to the original reference provided.

Lenovo Ideacentre C315: Budget Beauty Lacks Brawn

Looking at the Lenovo IdeaCentre C315 is “a bit like staring into the sun”–that’s a direct quote from our notes in reference to the bright, vibrant display on this 20-inch all-in-one desktop.

Powering the IdeaCentre C315 is AMD’s Athlon II X2 250u processor, a dual-core CPU clocked at a staggeringly low frequency of 1.6GHz. Accompanying it are 4GB of DDR2 memory and a single 500GB hard drive–an average amount of storage for the category.

The C315’s score of 68 on our WorldBench 6 series of tests is appropriate for the category–barely. Budget all-in-one darlings such as the HP TouchSmart 300 and the Gateway ZX4800-06, which fall into the same price bracket, produced higher scores (98 and 84, respectively). Don’t expect games to be the saving grace for Lenovo’s desktop, either: It failed to generate playable frame rates on our Unreal Tournament 3 benchmark, a result that’s fairly typical of most budget all-in-ones we test.

Unlike the screens of other all-in-ones we’ve reviewed, the IdeaCentre C315’s 1600-by-900-pixel display sits a little recessed behind the system’s front panel; typically most displays are flush with the front of the system. The design doesn’t disrupt the crisp coloration and pleasing separation of grayscales in the display’s picture, but it is slightly stranger to look at in comparison with competing all-in-one desktops.

The system’s multitouch, glossy panel can be a little difficult to watch depending on your room’s lighting setup–darker scenes can evoke a distracting mirror image of yourself if you’re not careful. That said, the C315’s viewing angles are excellent; the picture still looks as bright as can be from locations where you probably wouldn’t try watching a movie.

You’ll find a DVD burner on the side of the system for movies and whatnot–no Blu-ray support on this machine, though you wouldn’t exactly benefit much from the non-native-1080p picture. The system’s integrated wireless networking goes only up to 802.11g; that’s a disappointment, since we’ve grown accustomed to seeing an 802.11n connection on the majority of all-in-one desktops, even at the low end. At least Lenovo didn’t scrimp on the wired side of the equation: a single gigabit ethernet port joins a built-in TV tuner connection on the system’s rear.

Lenovo does make note in the included manual of how you can go into the system’s insides and replace the memory–that’s about as close to upgradability as you’ll find on an all-in-one desktop, and for that we salute the company. If there were only a way to upgrade this system’s built-in speakers, too; our desire for other audio connections is partly due to the horrific, laptop-like sound quality the C315’s little ear-thumpers produce. One word, Lenovo: bass. Where did it go?

It’s hard to find the ideal combination of connections, features, and speeds when you’re aiming at this low of a price tag in the all-in-one category. The Lenovo IdeaCentre C315 offers a vibrant display, but you’ll find superior performance (at the same price) from the Gateway ZX4800-06, not to mention superior wireless connectivity and wireless peripherals. Lenovo’s integrated TV tuner gives it a leg up, but the HP TouchSmart 300 makes a stronger showing still, for not much more.

What Is A Quantum Dot Monitor?

What’s Behind the Display?

Underneath the surface there are several tiny semiconductor nanocrystals that can influence some of the smallest particles known to mankind. The sizes of these particles are so small you probably have trillions of them under your fingernail. Each of these nanocrystals is known as a quantum dot. What this does is effectively minimize the space that a pixel (or, more appropriately, a dot) will occupy on your screen. There are many reasons why this is much more applicable for television sets and desktop monitors than your current LED set up, but we’ll get to that in a minute. What you need to know right now is that we’re talking about some very tiny crystals that form the picture on your screen.

Why Not Stick with LED?

Have you ever used an OLED screen on a high-end smartphone? The black color is very deep, lacking the typical “noise” you’d encounter with any other “normal” screen. You might have also observed that the colors on display are more vivid. This is also how quantum dot (QD) technology works, except it doesn’t use organic molecules to create its light.

What makes it so much more special than anything else is its propensity to minimize power use while remaining a potentially more affordable technology than the OLED screens we are used to. Since quantum dots can be both photo-active (i.e. light triggers it) and electro-active (i.e. electricity triggers it), it means that we can trigger certain pixels to light up in color while selectively shutting down anything we want to display as black. Your typical LED screen will always have backlighting to kill the mood while you’re watching a dark scene in a movie. This backlighting requires a certain amount of power (my 27-inch monitor takes up about 45 to 48 watts in nominal power). You can technically halve that using a QD monitor because it doesn’t use any power to display black as a color.

QD’s usefulness doesn’t stop here, though. Artists and web designers are able to see a very accurate reproduction of colors due to the sharpness of the image. In addition to this, larger displays may not “fuzz out” as much with the resolution as their LED counterparts would. The fact that it’s potentially rather cheap to manufacture these displays (along with the fact that they actually shine brighter without losing their brilliance as quickly as other displays) makes the technology very promising.

Here’s a fun fact. QD technology isn’t necessarily new. The idea came around the 1980s before personal computers with separate monitors went mainstream. Now that monitors are almost all over the place, and there’s nary a home without a computer, it’s worth another look.
