Play as the Dynamic Duo as you try to stop Brainiac from destroying Earth. Robin is faced with serious trouble when Batman gets a case of the brainwashing. In order to keep Brainiac from turning everyone into a bunch of mindless followers, the Justice League teams up with the bad guys to stop the invasion.


This game first made its way onto consoles like PlayStation and XboX in 2014 (also known as LEGO Batman 3). It is not a direct port, there have been a few changes made to fit the mobile environment. So, this is a console game and plays like one, but it fits on your iPhone screen just fine.


Players control various super heroes (and villains) as they try to stop Brainiac from taking over the world. Each character has special abilities and can wear special suits. Once a level has been unlocked by playing through the first time, it can be replayed by each character that you’ve unlocked. Different characters and different suits have access to different objects in the game. So, after you’ve unlocked Batman’s missile suit, you can replay the first level to smash apart silver bricks and reveal more collectable stuff.

The game plays out with a storyline that keeps you entertained and interested. Why did Batman get brainwashed? What does Brainiac want with the Lantern League? Only by playing the game will you discover the truth.

The game controls are based on either Casual controls or Virtual D-Pad. To play with your MFi controller, use Casual controls. The game uses a fairly complex mechanic, so controls are difficult to get used to at first. I highly recommend using an MFi controller for the best experience.

The Good

This experience is fully comparable to console gaming when it comes to mechanics, especially when you use an MFi controller. The storyline is rich. The voice acting is wonderful. The music is perfectly suited to the game. It is a really fun game to play.

The Bad

The touch screen controls are not very good. If using the Virtual D-Pad, there are a lot of buttons to get used to and the virtual joystick is a bit too loose. If you are using Casual Controls, it is borderline abysmal. You are constantly tapping all over the screen to move or do anything. Clearly, the game was built for consoles and ported to mobile or the control scheme would never have been made so complex. That being said, if you use an MFi controller, you will not be disappointed at all. It plays perfectly and intuitively. The game was meant to be played with a physical controller.


LEGO Batman: Beyond Gotham costs $4.99, which frankly is a steal for a game of this caliber. It is just as feature rich as console versions at a quarter of the price. The replay value is very high since you can replay unlocked levels with new characters to discover new items.


I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game, so much so that it took me three hours to write this review because I just kept playing instead of working. However, I had the joy of playing it with an MFi controller. If you have one, this purchase is a no-brainer. However, if you use the Virtual D-Pad or Casual controls to play, you may experience some frustration, especially at first, with moving around and interacting with objects. So, keep this in mind when making your decision to buy. This game is available on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Download it in the App Store today.

Extending Black History Lessons Beyond February

Black History Month is a mere 28 days. As the shortest month of the year, it seems to fly by, and the focus on Black history seems to fizzle out once the month ends. However, it’s important that educators carry the torch and continue to integrate lessons of Black history not just in February, but throughout the year. After all, Black history is American history.

Often, Black history lessons are truncated narratives that begin with enslavement and end in civil rights, reducing conversations through a “heroes and holidays” lens. I’ve found that focusing on Black joy and Black influence in the arts is a great way to broaden students’ perspectives. Delving deeper into Black history allows students to make connections and see how every aspect of American life has been shaped by the Black experience.

Black Joy

Black joy is all around us. From music to dance to art and more, Black joy is at the heart of the Black experience in America, which has always found hope and triumph in the bleakest of circumstances. Black joy is the ability to show Black people, images, and stories that are inspiring, uplifting, and empowering. Black joy is self-expression and freedom, the freedom to create, and also the freedom to show authenticity in the Black experience through Black art, dance, and music.

Black joy is especially important and needed to counter deficit thinking and narratives that intentionally or unintentionally present Black people as only able to experience pain, suffering, or death. Black joy is in abundance and is an important concept to represent within the curriculum and on the walls of the classroom.

Black joy has been suppressed for far too long, and there are numerous ways to incorporate it into the lives of students. Images of Black children laughing, playing, or enjoying the simple pleasures of life are truly a gift.

Students can explore these images throughout history or search for current examples of Black joy found on campus or within the local community. By focusing on Black art, music, dance, and writing, we are modeling our hope to see Black children thriving in their school community. Sharing Black joy with everyone is one way to achieve this and a step in affirming Blackness, a concept that needs to be committed to throughout the year.

Black Influence in the Arts

Lessons centering Black music and how Black music has shaped every genre of music from rock ’n’ roll to country are a good way to show students how American culture has been influenced by Black culture. Students can engage in projects that introduce them to artists’ contributions to these genres of music and trace the throughlines and connections of these art forms. As part of these lessons, students can create playlists featuring Black artists from multiple genres that are sure to bring joy in the discovery. 

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has encapsulated the Black experience through movement and dance. Alvin Ailey’s seminal choreographic work, “Revelations,” is pure joy as its vibrant expression of Black life connects our roots in Africa, the South, and the church, as well as the strong bonds of family and community.

Ailey was a trailblazer who paved the way for other Black dancers and choreographers, and amplifying his work sets the foundation to explore wonderful contemporary artists such as Misty Copeland and Jonathan Batista, who was recently named the first Black principal dancer of the Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Students can learn about the quilting of the Gullah Geechee people in South Carolina, how this expressive art form originated among Black people, and how its intricate designs were patterns that helped the enslaved escape and make it to the Underground Railroad. Contemporary artists such as Faith Ringgold have amplified Black art through narrative quilting, highlighting the contributions of Black Americans, while also continuing the legacy of the Black women of the Gullah Geechee community. 

Exploring contemporary Black visual artists and installationists, such as Kara Walker, Kehinde Wiley, and Kerry James Marshall, makes for an exciting journey of discovering the vibrant and colorful artistry and depiction of Black life, one that is sure to bring Black joy and liberation to the forefront.

Students can explore the world of fashion and innovation in learning about contemporary designer Telfar Clemens, who burst into the fashion scene with a signature tote bag culturally known as the “Bushwick Birkin.” Beyond this handbag, Telfar’s most significant contributions to the fashion world lie in his ability to thread Black style and Black aesthetic through his bold choices of color and design and appeal to an intergenerational audience.

And, as always, the Black voice is a powerful gateway to student awareness and learning about the influence of Black history. Whether it be indelible literary works from the Harlem Renaissance, poetry from the Black Arts Movement, or the world of Black culture at the intersection of sci-fi in Afro-Futurism, it is evident that the Black voice is worthy of serious consideration of student exploration in every school community.

I hope that one day Black history is properly integrated into school curricula, lessening the need for a Black History Month. But until then, let’s continue to acknowledge, honor, and celebrate Black history by focusing on Black joy and Black art and how they have enriched the lives of our students past and present.

Will Solid State Drives Go Beyond Enterprise?

Solid state disk (SSD) drives currently cost as much as 30 times more than Fibre Channel drives, but the return is impressive. The high cost has kept SSDs primarily tied to high-end enterprises that can afford such pricey performance.

But given that prices for SSDs are dropping rapidly, the drives may become more ubiquitous than in enterprise. Research firm IDC reports that cost is decreasing by as much as 40 to 50 percent annually, and industry insiders and vendors predict SSDs will be saturating storage systems as early as next year.

“The popularity really hinges on cost,” Charles King, an analyst at research firm Pund-IT, told chúng tôi “Prices are dropping significantly to the point where they will become options in midrange storage systems,” King said, noting EMC’s Clariion CX4 systems announced a few weeks back were the first midrange storage solutions to support SSD.

followed quickly behind, brashly predicting every device it will ship will have the flash technology by the end of 2010. Such big name support illustrates why SSD, which uses memory chips instead of rotating platters for data storage, could drive one of the biggest storage changes in decades.

In a recent report, IDC stated that “SSD adoption will be measured and deliberate, focusing first on market segments that can tolerate the additional premium associated with SSDs,” referring to today’s cost factor.

For example SSD can reduce data access time from 20 milliseconds on hard disks to about 0.5 milliseconds, an accomplishment Janukowicz termed “significant.”

“It also offers high reliability due to its physical nature and is more energy efficient as it requires less power,” Janukowicz said.

Those attributes have most SSD OEMs busy right now integrating and testing the technology. “Companies have been using hard disks for decades, and SSD is relatively new so enterprises will have to learn about where they best fit in,” Janukowicz said.

The best fit is where high performance, high capacity and fast disk read times are needed. SSD isn’t a technology that every enterprise needs or one that can fulfill all storage requirements, experts point out.

“At this point, SSD products are largely aimed at enterprises looking to maximize performance of large databases and other IT assets that benefit from enhanced response times,” King explained. “It is a specialized solution to specific kinds of problems.”

Yet that specialty aspect won’t preclude good adoption rates thanks to emerging storage environments such as Web 2.0 platforms, which need the same high-end storage systems built in legacy customers bases such as the financial and government sectors.

“The technology is already going beyond the commerce and trade transaction worlds,” Patrick Wilkison, vice president of business development at SSD manufacturer STEC, told chúng tôi STEC supplies the drives used by EMC in its high-end Symmetrix and midrange Clariion arrays.

Beyond Ordinals: A Guide To Bitcoin’s Peer

Since the launch of the Ordinals protocol by software engineer Casey Rodarmor on January 21, 2023, almost 2,000,000 “digital artifacts” have been created — ranging from memes to massive NFT projects like Taproot Wizards. But despite the explosive rise and frenzied media coverage of these seemingly new “Bitcoin NFTs,” developers have been focused on improving the protocol’s functionality since at least as early as 2012.

In short, there have always been ways to mint and launch assets on Bitcoin’s underlying blockchain. These tools began with things like Bitcoin Colored Coins and, later, platforms like Counterparty in 2014, which helped lay the foundation for tokenized assets like Spells of Genesis and Rare Pepes to emerge in 2024. 


Counterparty was founded in 2014 by Robert Dermody, Adam Krellenstein, and Evan Wagner. The protocol, including an inbuilt decentralized exchange, was created to extend Bitcoin’s functionality by figuratively “writing in the margins” of regular transactions.

While surpassed by Ethereum and other popular NFT chains in recent years, Counterparty still has an active community of supporters with close to 30,000 Twitter followers and over 100,000 assets —some of which are bridged to Ethereum through the Emblem Vault.

More importantly, Counterparty is best known as the original home for what eventually came to be known as the “CryptoArt movement” — a genre of organic, decentralized, and verifiably rare artwork and memes on Bitcoin largely catalyzed through assets like Rare Pepes — tokenized variations of the Pepe the Frog meme by Matt Furie, which still command significant sums on secondary markets. 

How does it work? 

Similar to how Ethereum token standards define how certain assets work on its protocol, Counterparty provides the infrastructure that outlines how people can create unique tokens on the Bitcoin blockchain. These assets aren’t limited to digital collectibles or tokens but anything with a proven rarity — even physical items. 

Counterparty is Bitcoin-native and can embed and use data from the Bitcoin protocol when executing contracts, so transacting on the platform looks just as it would when using BTC. Counterparty nodes simply interpret the data in these transactions based on specific rules. From there, the protocol creates its native ledger of related transactions that it has seen on the underlying Bitcoin network.

Another way to think about how transactions on Counterparty work is via the concept of Russian nesting dolls, whereby the Bitcoin transaction would contain a smaller Counterparty transaction inside of it. Added complexities aside, the transactions on Counterparty are the same as Bitcoin and, therefore, just as secure. 

That said, a notable difference between Bitcoin and Counterparty is the relationship between nodes. Unlike Bitcoin nodes, Counterparty nodes don’t communicate with each other and don’t offer a “peer-to-peer network.” While they all share the same code and receive the same transaction data, the primary role of Counterparty nodes is to connect to the Bitcoin software.

Once connected, the nodes download and decode data from each transaction while benefiting from Bitcoin’s security and computing power. In addition, as with gas on Ethereum, users still need to pay mining fees when transacting on Counterparty. 

How do dispensers work?

Buying and selling assets on Counterparty is often done via automatic dispensers, which work like digital vending machines. Anyone can create a dispenser and decide how much of a token or asset to sell, along with the price in BTC. 

Buying assets from these dispensers is akin to transferring tokens between digital wallets. Buyers just need to scan the dispenser’s QR code or enter its wallet address and then send the minimum required amount of BTC for the items they want to buy. The dispenser will then send the asset to the buyer’s wallet.

Dispensers are basic smart contracts with set rules that handle and distribute assets independently. To help mitigate scams, a warning sign will show next to an empty dispenser, informing prospective buyers not to send any BTC because the dispenser is closed.

What is XCP? 

Buying assets on Counterparty can also be done using the platform’s native XCP token. Unlike more conventional methods for launching tokens like crowd sales or initial coin offerings (ICOs), Counterparty used the proof-of-burn (PoB) consensus protocol to issue XCP in January 2014.

To better secure the network, miners burn some of their coins to acquire a virtual mining rig, granting them the ability and authority to mine blocks on the Counterparty network. The more coins a miner burns, the larger their virtual mining “platform” becomes.

The Counterparty team said it settled on PoB to keep the distribution of tokens as fair and decentralized as possible while avoiding potential legal issues. To generate XCP in the network, around 2,140 BTC—valued at over $2 million back then—were destroyed or “burned” by sending them to a provably unspendable Bitcoin address with no known private key, making them permanently lost. The XCP token is also used in various ways in the Counterparty protocol, like helping users create new assets, trade, and make bets. XCP trades on exchanges like Dex-Trade and Zaif, paired with either BTC or the Japanese yen.

Compared to more mainstream marketplaces like OpenSea, where one simply has to connect their MetaMask or Ethereum wallet, the user interface on Counterparty is not as streamlined and requires a few more steps to mint assets. Also, as with gas wars on Ethereum, dispensers can be front-run, with transactions being prioritized over others if people pay higher fees to miners. 


Extending on the concept that originated in 2012 is Ordinals. This platform allows people to inscribe messages or images onto the smallest divisible units of Bitcoin, known as Satoshis (named after the pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto). These unique inscriptions can be shared, traded, and preserved directly on the Bitcoin blockchain. As of April 2023, over 1,900,000 Ordinals have been created.

For those unfamiliar with the mechanics, each Bitcoin is broken into 100,000,000 units called satoshis (or sats) or 1/100,000,000 of a BTC. Launched on the Bitcoin mainnet, the Ordinals protocol allows people who operate Bitcoin nodes to inscribe each satoshi with data (stored in a Bitcoin transaction’s signature), thus creating what’s known as an Ordinal.

That data inscribed on Bitcoin can include smart contracts, which, in turn, enables NFTs. In other words, Ordinals are NFTs or digital artifacts like images, text, programs, and video games you can mint or inscribe directly onto the Bitcoin blockchain, unlike Counterparty, which functions more like a Layer-2 solution (not directly on the mainnet). Although the idea of inscriptions on Bitcoin isn’t anything new, it is largely possible thanks to the Taproot upgrade introduced on the Bitcoin network on November 14, 2023.  

How are Ordinals different from other NFTs?

Drawing parallels between Ordinals and NFTs can help demystify an inherently complex system, but it’s essential to recognize the subtle distinctions between them. NFTs on blockchains like Ethereum or Solana typically point to off-chain data on the Interplanetary File System (IPFS) — a decentralized storage solution akin to an external hard drive. This approach allows for dynamic metadata updates, making it suitable for projects that need to enhance image quality or alter the appearance of their NFTs over time. 

However, this ability to change NFT metadata is the setback that Ordinals Rodarmor was trying to improve with the new protocol. According to Rodarmor, NFTs are “incomplete” as they compromise integrity or security with off-chain or external data.

In comparison, Ordinals are “complete” as all the data is inscribed or stored directly on the Bitcoin blockchain. Hence the reason behind naming them “digital artifacts” rather than Bitcoin NFTs. Another difference is that while most NFTs have creator royalties imbued in the contract or attached to the asset, Ordinals do not. As stated by Rodarmor, an Ordinal “is intended to reflect what NFTs should be, sometimes are, and what inscriptions always are, by their very nature.”

How to create and trade Ordinals

While still burdened by a slight technical barrier, inscribing on Bitcoin is becoming easier. After setting up a wallet, some key methods include: 

Run a Bitcoin node and inscribe an Ordinal yourself.

Use a service like Gamma to inscribe an Ordinal without running your node.

The Satoshibles NFT collection team has created Ordinals Bot, which will inscribe an Ordinal on your behalf.

Typically, these services require users to supply a BTC address to receive the Ordinal, often using an Ordinal-compatible wallet like Sparrow. Users are then informed of the number of satoshis (smaller units of Bitcoin) needed to cover transaction and data fees, as well as a service fee. Payment can be made in BTC, and an address for payment will be provided. The cost of inscribing an Ordinal can vary from under $50 in BTC to several hundred dollars, depending on the file size. 

Users should be mindful that, unlike regular BTC transactions, which usually complete within minutes, the potentially risk-laden process of sending BTC for an Ordinal might take hours or even days to finalize.

However, the idea of filling Bitcoin blocks with JPEGs and videos — or even video games — isn’t sitting well with some in the Bitcoin community who have voiced concerns that putting NFTs directly on the Bitcoin network will drive up transaction costs.

Despite this divisiveness, Ordinals are another method for anyone to preserve their messages for posterity. Some technologists and developers have even started to find and inscribe satoshis with a specific historical date and inscribe unique messages on them with important historical data or facts that would be subverted through conventional mainstream media. 

Bitcoin Stamps

Bitcoin Stamps proposes a method of embedding base64-formatted image data using transaction outputs in a novel fashion. To put it more simply, Bitcoin Stamps are digital collectibles similar to ERC-1155 semi-fungible tokens stored on Bitcoin’s unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) instead of witness data like Ordinals.

How do Stamps differ from Ordinals?

There are several ways in which Stamps differ from Ordinals:

Storage: Bitcoin Stamps are stored on Bitcoin’s unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs), while Ordinals are stored in the witness data.

Protocol: Bitcoin Stamps use the Counterparty protocol, an open-source messaging protocol built on the Bitcoin blockchain, whereas Ordinals are not mentioned to use this protocol. Furthermore, Stamps is using Counterparty bare multi-sig transactions for minting Bitcoin Stamps, allowing users to securely send BTC to a script-linked address.

Minting cost: The cost of minting Bitcoin Stamps is approximately four times higher than inscribing Ordinals. However, Counterparty allows for more flexibility in minting larger quantities, which can lead to economies of scale.

Immutability: The encoded image data for Bitcoin Stamps live in the transaction outputs on the Bitcoin blockchain, requiring Bitcoin nodes to download all the data to maintain the blockchain. In contrast, Ordinals’ image data lives in witness data, creating an environment where the image data can be pruned.

Flexibility: Counterparty provides less user friction in minting a 1:1 or 1:100 at any given time, giving it more feature-rich capabilities for on-chain Bitcoin protocols than Ordinals.

Growth rate: Bitcoin Stamps have been growing faster than Ordinals, likely due to the flexibility of minting larger quantities.

To mint Bitcoin Stamps, an image is converted to text, encoded as a Base64 file, and broadcasted to the Bitcoin network using the Counterparty protocol. The data is then recompiled to recreate the original image.

Some controversy around Bitcoin Stamps revolves around data permanence, UTXO set bloating, and disagreement about using block space for digital artwork. But, as with Ordinals, despite these debates, the emergence of Bitcoin Stamps once again highlights the capabilities of the Bitcoin blockchain as builders continue to develop new applications and improve user experience.


Another platform that leverages the functionality of Ordinals is Nostr, a decentralized social network launched in 2023 by Bitcoin developer Joost Jager. Nostr enables users to post messages and content directly on the blockchain (using the Ordinals system) in a censorship-resistant manner, free from the constraints of any central authority or algorithmic censorship otherwise rampant on platforms like Twitter and Meta. 

While still growing in adoption, the importance of Nostr invariably lies in its ability to foster an environment where free speech and expression can thrive unimpeded by the whims of centralized powers. In a world where information is increasingly controlled and manipulated, Nostr offers a platform that upholds democracy, transparency, and autonomy, allowing users to engage in open discourse, share ideas, and collaborate without fear of censorship.

In other words, this decentralized approach — tapping into the censorship-resistant nature of the Bitcoin blockchain — can reshape the way we interact online, giving voice to the voiceless and paving the way for a more equitable digital landscape. 

A promising future

While lacking in comparative volume when compared with Ethereum, the steady rise of creativity and versatility on the Bitcoin blockchain means that developers and creators are offered a wider array of choices for free expression online. Moreover, being classified as a commodity by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission in September 2024 further bolsters Bitcoin’s role in championing freedom. This classification affords it greater autonomy and less stringent regulations than other cryptocurrencies deemed securities, enabling users to express themselves more openly through the network.

This is certainly good news for storage vendors, but what does it mean for the future of the industry? Let’s take a look at several key areas that are predicted to shape the storage industry for 2004 and beyond.

Information Lifecycle Management

Although many industry analysts believe that through 2005 information lifecycle management (ILM) will be approximately 80 percent vision and 20 percent products, Diamond Lauffin, senior executive vice president of Nexsan Technologies, predicts it will be more like 95 percent vision and 5 percent implemented technologies.

Lauffin says that even five years ago the cost between the different types of storage were very dramatic, and the extreme differences of cost and performance allowed for manufactures to explore the concepts of HSM (Hierarchical Storage Management), etc. The premise, he says, is that the end user would like to have all of their data on-line all of the time. “Primary storage was too expensive, so we developed products like HSM to migrate data from high-priced disk to a near-line device like tape or optical,” says Lauffin.

However, according to Lauffin, today some storage vendors are supplying disk systems that are being used as primary, secondary, near-line, backup, and archive. “It’s the same exact system, no difference,” says Lauffin. Lauffin explains that there is no difference in cost to the end user regardless of the use.

“When you can provide a disk solution for backup and archive that is equal to or less in cost than tape and that same system is operating at speeds that allow it to be used as primary storage, why would an end user need a software application to migrate date to tiered storage?” he asks. However, he continues, “I do see a use for software that eliminates duplicate files so that end users are not keeping duplicate copies of files that are not going to change.”

John C. Lallier, vice president of technology, FalconStor, predicts that those figures may be closer to a 70/30 split because ILM is such a broad category. “It isn’t a lack of products as much as it is the need to define the processes these products will be used to automate,” says Lallier.

Others agree that while ILM is a good idea for larger organizations, it may be difficult to justify for the small to mid-sized enterprise (SME) segment, which is still wrestling with basic backup window and storage consolidation issues. The problems that ILM solves, according to Zophar Sante, vice president of marketing for SANRAD, are still not at the top of the list for the SME market. But he does believe that ILM solutions can be deployed at the same time as storage consolidation solutions are delivered to SME.

Sante believes that ILM suppliers who partner with IP SAN suppliers and Disaster Recovery (DR) solution providers could find that ILM capabilities layer nicely over the IP-SAN infrastructure. “Within a true IP SAN, there can exist multiple classes of storage systems — ranging from high-end $20K TB RAID solutions to $3K per TB disk solutions to removable media systems,” says Sante.

Sante also explains that any ILM solution can use all or part of an IP SAN infrastructure to seamlessly migrate files between all three classes of storage in a manner that is invisible to the application server. According to Sante, another way to use ILM in conjunction with an IP SAN is to use the IP SAN as a stage two repository for files located on the internal disk drives of the application server.

“For example,” he says, “an organization could have an email server with 1TB of internal RAID and 2TB of storage resources from an IP SAN. As needed, older files will be transferred between the internal RAID and the IP-SAN storage.” In this case, Sante explains, the ILM solution has 3TB of total storage capacity broken into two classes of storage — the precious and limited internal RAID of the server and the easy to expand IP SAN infrastructure.

“By the way,” Sante continues, “a true IP SAN infrastructure can easily have 500TB of capacity and can increase volumes on the fly.”
