Join The World’s Biggest High
Hundreds of amateur balloonists will send their creations into near space in April. You can join, too. To take part in the world’s largest space-balloon event, called the Global Space Balloon Challenge, sign up at chúng tôi then tie a payload to a high-altitude balloon and launch it between April 10 and 27. Sixty teams from six continents flew balloons during last year’s event, according to organizers. This year, more than 100 teams have already signed up.
High-altitude balloons are big, unmanned balloons like the ones meteorologists use to gather data from the stratosphere for weather predictions. They’re about five feet in diameter, when inflated. They can reach heights of more than 100,000 feet—higher than a passenger plane—yet cost less than $1,000 to make. They can also carry science experiments—the Global Space Balloon Challenge includes a prize for best experiment. They take awesome pictures. You can see some of our favorites from last year’s challenge in the gallery below.
Last year’s participants included ballooners of varying levels of ability. There were parent-kid teams, experienced adult balloon enthusiasts, and undergraduate and graduate engineering students. For those who have never flown a high-altitude balloon, the Global Space Balloon Challenge site has starter tutorials and forums for teams to ask questions. The project also has a couple of programs for beginners, including a mentoring program and a program where a beginner team can design an experiment to fly on an experienced team’s balloon.
P.S. While researching amateur ballooning, I learned a little news you can use. The U.S. National Weather Service sends hundreds of high-altitude balloons carrying measuring equipment into near space every day. Eventually those balloons fall back down to Earth. Their equipment is labeled “Harmless Weather Instrument” in case citizens find them. Before learning this, I would have been pretty weirded out to find a giant, deflated balloon labeled “Harmless Weather Instrument,” but now I know it’s not just aliens trying to trick me. If you want to be nice, you can mail the instrument back to the Weather Service inside its own postage-paid mailbag.
Check out photos below from the 2014 Global Space Balloon Challenge

2023 Vw Jetta Brings New Style, Tech And Lower Price
2023 VW Jetta brings new style, tech and lower price
There’s a new Jetta in town, and Volkswagen’s compact sedan is growing up with bold new styling and an all-changed platform promising more fuel efficiency. Unveiled today at the Detroit Auto Show 2023, the 2023 VW Jetta makes a switch to the automaker’s MQB architecture and grows in all directions as a result. That, VW promises, means more presence on the road and more cabin space inside, not to mention closing the gap between the new Jetta and Audi’s A3 sedan.
Outside, the grille has grown, while the crease lines on the car are sharper and bolder. More chrome trim has been fitted, while LED lighting is standard. VW has given the new Jetta a fast-sloping roof line, to give the air of a coupe.
Though the 2023 Jetta is – at 105.7-inches – just 1.3-inches longer in its wheelbase than its predecessor, by pushing the wheels further out and shortening the overhangs VW has managed to maximize that moderate growth. It’s wider and taller than before, too, which adds up to more spacious accommodations for the up to five people inside.
As for those accommodations, they’ve been fully redesigned from the outgoing car, with greater use of soft-touch materials and a new, trapezoidal design theme to leave the cabin more modern. New fabric colors and designs have been introduced, and there’s the option of ambient lighting that can be changed between ten different colors. Leather seating surfaces are optional.
Heated and ventilated front seats are also options, as is a power driver’s seat with position memory. Dual-zone automatic climate control can be added, while Driver Personalization for up to four individuals is standard. That controls – trim and specs depending – driver seat memory and assistance system preferences, temperature, ambient lighting color, radio presets, navigation view, and the customization of the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.
The latter, standard on Jetta SEL and SEL Premium trims, replaces the analog gages with a fully digital display. It’s technology that graduated down from Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, bringing navigation, multimedia, and vehicle information into a customizable layout. Other tech on offer includes Volkswagen Car-Net, which has a selection of connected vehicle services, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink.
A storage cubby in the center console has grown to 5 liters, sufficient to fit an iPad, while a 400 watt BeatsAudio system is optional. The Jetta’s reversing camera is standard, while options include forward collision warnings with autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring with rear traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go traffic support, automatic high-beams, and lane departure warnings and assistance. Automatic post-collision braking is also available.
Under the hood, there’s a 1.4-liter TSI turbocharged, direct-injection engine. That’s good for a class-leading 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, as is a six-speed transmission; an eight-speed automatic is optional on the base Jetta, but standard on higher-level trims.
Also standard with the automatic is a stop/start system, which VW says contributes to fuel economy. Actual EPA figures will have to wait until closer to the sedan’s launch, however.
The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta will be available in Q2 2023, in S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trims. A Jetta R-Line trim will be added at launch too, with sportier styling, trim-exclusive interior and exterior design elements, and an XDS electronic differential. Arguably most impressive, pricing will kick off at $18,545, undercutting the old model.
Arm Chips Are The Next Revolution In The Pc World
Apple has begun its official, though not yet complete, shift away from Intel CPUs to ARM chips as of the end of 2023. It’s a little revolution in the consumer computer space that has only served to support Qualcomm’s earlier initiatives and highlight the fact that RISC chips are becoming more popular as a result of smartphones’ spread.
By 2026, in four years, half of the cloud processors will be based on an ARM chip, and 30% of PCs will be running an ARM processor, according to Steve Brazier, CEO of market research firm Canalys.
Apple is leading the wayThanks in large part to Apple and its Macs, whose sales look to be surviving the global recession and even declining in sales, ARM chips control approximately 15% in the third quarter of this year, according to reports, which is a large percentage of the PC industry.
According to Canalys, Apple currently sells approximately 100% ARM-based Macs. For instance, the Mac Pro and the most expensive Mac mini still use Intel processors. According to IDC, the Cupertino company, which ranked behind Lenovo, HP, and Dell in terms of market share for the third quarter of 2023, controlled about 13.5% of the PC market with its Apple Silicon Macs. Dell came in third with 16.1%. However, this fourth place conceals two positive developments for Apple. On the one hand, the company sold 10.06 million more Macs in the third quarter of 2023 than it did in the corresponding quarter of 2023. The Californian company only offers high-end products, so it can produce much more value with fewer sales.
The Windows-based PC world will soon join ARM chips Gizchina News of the weekJoin GizChina on Telegram
While ARM-powered Macs are the most notable and intriguing PCs in terms of power, ARM-powered Chromebooks are also available on the market, albeit less well-liked.
The CEO of Canalys is certain that ARM will continue to grow. Especially if major PC OEMs, who are currently mostly committed to AMD and Intel, switch to ARM processors.
An important initial step in this direction is Microsoft’s initiative. To make it easier for developers to create Windows applications for ARM-based devices. The recent announcements from Qualcomm should also give the PC sector a breath of fresh air.
Qualcomm’s ARM chips for PCThe San Diego business just revealed the ARM chip for PC’s future. Only Oryon, the chip that will be the main rival to the M1 and M2, has been introduced thus far. But it might be the tool that Windows PCs running on ARM have been waiting for. To be able to counteract Apple Macs’ two-year-old success.
We only knew one name of the chip we were waiting for: Oryon. Qualcomm finally absorbed the ideas for the cores formerly known as Phoenix to create Oryon. Its new in-house high-powered CPU core, after purchasing Nuvia for $1.4 billion in 2023.
Even though Qualcomm has invested in Windows PCs for more than five years. It will be some time before the company releases information about its final chips. For how long? Several months, as the manufacturer states that the chip will be included in products that should be made available “in the second half of 2023”. Thus, 2024 may be the year of “the switchover and acceleration of the deployment of ARM in PCs,” in the words of Kedar Kondap, Qualcomm’s general manager of PC chips and gaming.
What Is A Refurbished Phone?
With finances being squeezed hard by the high cost of living, it’s no wonder people are turning to refurbished phones instead.
But what is a refurbished phone? How is it any different to buying a used phone from ebay? Is it even safe to buy a refurbished phone?
We’ll answer these and other questions right here.
What does refurbished actually mean? This is one of the biggest problems right now as it can mean different things, depending upon who’s selling you the phone.
In general, refurbished means that a used phone has been professionally checked over to make sure it is fully working and that there are no faults with the cameras, speakers, microphone and screen, and that the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 4G works as it should.
You might assume, as many people do, that a refurbished phone will have a new battery and that any other defective parts have been replaced.
But this isn’t what happens in most cases. Only Apple and Samsung actually remanufacture phones to a standard where it’s impossible to tell a refurbished one from a brand new one.
And hardly any companies that sell refurbished phones will replace batteries or cracked screens. Aznu in the UK is one of the only companies that does, and pitches itself as a seller of premium refurbished phones with no defects.
Not all phones need replacement parts as they have been well looked after, are fully working and in great condition. So there’s no reason to avoid sellers who simply check and grade phones.
In face, you need to watch out: if a phone has been taken apart, any IP rating (for water-resistance) may no longer apply. If this is important to you, check with the seller before purchasing.
Back Market works a bit differently to most refurbished phone sellers. It’s a marketplace that lists phones from hundreds of different refurbishers.
Most other companies take phones that have been traded in (or sold directly to them), carefully assess them to make sure everything functions as it should and then grade them according to their condition.
For example, it could be ‘like new’, ‘pristine’, ‘very good’, ‘good’, ‘fair’ or something else.
This gives you an idea of what to expect, but unlike ebay or other places where you can buy used phones, you won’t see photos of the actual device you’ll receive on a website that sells refurbished phones.
Instead, you’ll see the same stock images as if you were buying the phone brand new. Currently, the only seller we know of that publishes example photos of what each grade is like is giffgaff – a mobile network operator in the UK.
Usually, you’ll see listings like those below.
musicMagpie
Whatever you see, you must read the descriptions of each grade carefully, because you can’t assume ‘good’ means the same from one seller to another.
For example, Envirofone says that a ‘good’ phone will be “An average condition product that has signs of use. This will have wear and tear to the front, back or sides.“
It’s a similar situation if you buy a ‘good condition’ phone from giffgaff, which is the lowest it sells.
Giffgaff sent over an iPhone 12 in good condition for us to look at, and it was difficult to find any damage or defects at all. There were a few tiny scratches on the screen that proved impossible to photograph, and a single one-inch scratch on the rear glass that you should be able to make out in the photo below.
Jim Martin / Foundry
Envirofone also offers a cheaper grade. Its ‘fair’ condition phones will have “signs of heavy wear to the front, back or sides. This product is fully functional and will have a battery health over 70%.”
The best that Envirofone sells is ‘pristine’, which means “a premium product which has light signs of use and is in excellent working order.”
Below is an iPhone 11 in ‘pristine’ condition, which has only one very small scuff mark on one corner and no other visible blemishes.
Jim Martin / Foundry
By contrast, giffgaff’s best condition is ‘like new’ which means “Zero wear and tear: these phones look like new with no visible scratches on the screen or body”.
Naturally, the prices of a refurbished phones differ according to condition, with ‘like new’ being the most expensive, and ‘fair’ being the cheapest.
Most people will be happy with ‘good condition’ as it’s the best compromise: you save more than if you went for a phone with no visible defects, and there shouldn’t be any really noticeable damage.
And if more noticeable scratches, scuffs and light dents don’t bother you, you can save even more. Once you pop a case on, and perhaps a screen protector, most scratches won’t be visible anyway.
In general, you should expect any refurbished phone that isn’t in the lowest grade to have a battery health of 80% or higher. This means it has 80% of its original capacity, so will last 80% as long as when it was new.
Why shouldn’t I just buy a used phone? It’s a great question. Why not just go on ebay, Facebook marketplace or wherever you usually turn to buy used products?
You may well find a phone on those sites that’s cheaper and in better condition than those you find on refurbished phone websites.
But the big difference with a refurbished phone is that you get a warranty with it, or should do. Typically sellers offer a 12-month warranty so if one of the cameras stop working or there’s some other problem you can return it and get a replacement.
That warranty won’t apply if you drop it and smash the screen, of course, but that’s what phone insurance is for.
Sometimes, though, you will see sellers offering extras like this. UR, for example, provides insurance against accidental damage and includes a glass screen protector, SIM removal tool, compostable phone case and a charger with every phone it sells. Yet they’re comparable in price with other sellers for the equivalent phone.
Refurbished iPhone 13 Pro Max in ‘Premium’ condition
UR
Other sellers, such as Envirofone, include only a charging cable and exclude the charger because you’ve probably already got one, and shipping more chargers is – as Apple will tell you – worse for the environment.
Because buying a refurbished phone is not a private sale – as it would be if you purchased from an individual on ebay – you have more rights. One important one is the ability to return the phone within a certain number of days, usually a minimum of two week, and get your money back.
This means it is safe to buy a refurbished phone.
Do refurbished phones come with new batteries? The vast majority don’t and there are a variety of reasons why.
One is that putting a new battery in would increase the cost of the phone a lot because of the price of the battery and also the time it takes for someone to replace it.
Unlike the old days where batteries just unclipped from the back of the phone, they’re sealed inside and are difficult to get to.
Back Market told us that it is planning to introduce the option to have a new battery installed, at extra cost. So at least you’ll have the option.
Do refurbished phones last long? That’s a difficult question to answer. You’ll get a warranty with a refurbished phone, so if it becomes faulty you have some comeback until that time is up.
It’s impossible to say how long it will continue to work beyond the warranty, but that’s the same with a new phone.
However, it is important to understand they are not new phones and have been used by someone already. The battery (if it hasn’t been replaced) won’t last as long as a brand new one and you also need to remember that if you’re buying an older model, it won’t get updates from its maker for as long as a more recent phone.
For example, your budget might stretch as far as an iPhone 11. This is a popular choice for a refurbished phone, but as it was released in September 2023, it’s already over three years old.
Apple may continue to offer iOS updates for it, but potentially only for another two years.
The situation can be worse for Android phones which typically get updates for only three years anyway. Buy one from 2023 and you could well find it can’t be updated to the latest version of Android, and may not get security updates either.
Which refurbished phone company is the best? There are lots of places to buy refurbished phones, but don’t assume every seller is the same, because they’re not.
It is always worth reading reviews on TrustPilot, and also the terms and conditions on the website itself. What does the warranty actually cover? Under what circumstances can you return the phone if you’re not happy with the condition?
You won’t always be dealing with the company that you bought the phone from, either.
Some are actually marketplaces, but you may not notice this. Back Market is one of them, and uses hundreds of different “refurbishers” – independent companies that check over phones and grade them independently, although always using the same guidelines from Back Market to ensure they meet the same standards.
Back Market
When you look at a listing on Back Market, you can see who the seller is at the bottom, and you’re still covered by a 12-month warranty regardless of who’s selling it.
It’s a similar situation with Amazon Renewed and ebay. Neither Amazon nor ebay refurbish phones. Instead, they work with companies that do, and those companies will send you a phone and provide the warranty.
In all three cases: Amazon, ebay and Back Market, you can speak to the in-house customer support teams if you need help resolving any issues. But it’s worth bearing this in mind when buying from these marketplaces.

Midjourney – AI Revolution in Art and Graphic Design
What is Midjourney?Midjourney is a new AI-powered tool that can turn any imagination into artwork from text. The resulting arts from Midjourney will definitely WOW you – they’re not only unique but some of them are really breathtaking.
We’re fascinated by this text-to-image concept so we applied to be a part of this tool’s beta. We spent a few days playing with it and have so much fun! In this article, we want to show you some artworks that caught our attention.
Then we will show you some keywords we have tried or we learned from others’ experiments. Hope these will give you some inspiration and help you create specific artwork with more clear and detailed instructions.
How does Midjourney work?Midjourney works by inputting a text prompt into a text encoder. This text encoder is trained to map the prompt to a representation space.
Next, a model called the prior maps the text encoding to a corresponding image encoding that captures the semantic information of the prompt contained in the text encoding.
Finally, an image decoder stochastically generates an image which is a visual manifestation of this semantic information. In other words, Midjourney takes a text prompt and uses it to generate an image.
The text prompt is first encoded into a representation space. Then, the semantic information from the text prompt is captured in an image encoding. Finally, the image is decoded from the encoding and generated.
Midjourney ModelsThe newest Midjourney model just came out in November 2023 and is the Midjourney V4 model.
This model sets out to improve features like:
– Vastly more knowledge (of creatures, places, and more)
– Much better at getting small details right (in all situations)
– Handles more complex prompting (with multiple levels of detail)
– Better with multi-object / multi-character scenes
– Supports –chaos arg (set it from 0 to 100) to control the variety of image grids
Read all you need to know about the Midjourney V4 model in this post.
Is Midjourney free?Yes, Midjourney AI has a free tier that allows users to generate 25 images.
After that, users must subscribe to one of two paid plans in order to continue using the service. The basic membership plan costs $10 per month, while the standard membership plan costs $30 per month. The two plans differ in terms of the number of images that can be generated, as well as the quality of the images.
How do you use the MidJourney? 1. You need a Discord account to use Midjourney. In order to use Midjourney, you will need to create a Discord account. Once you have done so, you can join the Discord server and head over to the Midjourney bot. From there, you can select one of the #newbies channels and begin using the bot.
2. Join a Discord server that is using the Midjourney Bot.In order to use the Midjourney Bot, you will need to join a Discord server that is already using the bot. You can do this by following a link to the server, or by being invited to the server by someone who is already a member. Once you are in the server, you will need to head over to the channel that is designated for using the bot. This is usually labeled as a #newbies channel.
3. Use a Discord Slash Command in the designated channel to start using the bot.In order to start using the Midjourney Bot, you will need to use a Discord Slash Command in the designated channel. To do this, simply type /imagine into the channel and a prompt will appear. From there, you can add whatever you want the bot to generate.
4. Upscale the image or create variations.Once the image has been generated, you will have the option to upscale the image or create variations. Upscaling the image will generate a larger, 1024×1024 pixel version of the image, along with additional details. Creating variations will generate four new images that are similar in style and composition to the original.
5. Save the image or send the results to your Discord DMs. Can Midjourney be used commercially?Yes, Midjourney can be used commercially if you are a paid member. This means that you can use all of the images that you have generated for your own business purposes. However, if you are not a paid member, you are only granted a license to use the assets under the Creative Commons Noncommercial 4.0 Attribution International License. 7 Best Midjourney Prompt TipsHere are the 7 best Midjourney prompt engineering tips:
1. Include the desired image as early in the prompt as possible. The earlier an image is included in the prompt, the greater the effect it has on the final result. This is because words at the beginning of the prompt carry more weight.
2. Use commas and :: to break up the prompt and add weights to words.Commas and :: can be used to break up the prompt and add weights to words. This affects how hard MJ tries to blend two concepts together for the image.
3. Consider the aspect ratio of the desired image. The aspect ratio of the desired image can have a significant impact on the final result. For example, if you want a portrait, you should use an aspect ratio that has room to fit more than one face.
4. Reference artists that specialize in the desired image.Referencing artists that specialize in the desired image can help MJ generate the image you want.
5. Use image + text prompts to describe the desired image.Using image + text prompts to describe the desired image is a good way to ensure that key elements of the image are transferred to the final result
6. Be aware of the limit to the complexity of the prompt. There is a limit to the complexity of the prompt that MJ can handle. too complex of a prompt may result in MJ generating a completely different image.
7. Use –no or negative weights to exclude words from the prompt. The –no or negative weights option can be used to exclude words from the prompt. This can be helpful if you are getting too much of a certain element in the final image.
