Adobe’s new Photoshop AI feature, “Generative fill,” could be a game-changer for budding artists. Adobe has released several AI additions to regular Photoshop, making it an even more effective tool for artists. 

There is even a way for you to try this feature right now if you are an existing subscriber of Adobe. Generative Fill is one of Adobe Photoshop AI’s new features, and we will take a detailed look at How to Use Photoshop AI Generative Fill in this article.

What is Generative Fill?

Generative Fill is a step towards integrated AI for Adobe, allowing users to generate images based on existing patterns or selections in an image. We previously had the Firefly web tool to do that for us. But now Adobe has integrated the feature with the Photoshop tool itself.

To try the feature, you need to download the Photoshop AI Beta version from the official website, and as long as you have a Photoshop subscription, you can use it for any use-case scenario.

To note down the key features of Generative Fill, we have the removal of unwanted objects, an extension of backgrounds, and the creation of unique visual effects with just a single command.

We do not need to tinker with Photoshop’s settings to fill in areas with new textured realistic objects. With Generative Fill, Photoshop AI magically takes care of any detail you want to change about your image.

All of this can be done with just a single text prompt. Much like how ChatGPT creates text-based content based on text prompts, this tool does the same and produces an output in the image form.

How to Use Generative Fill: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Make your selection

Firstly, you must select a layer or area on the image where you want Generative Fill to work its magic. Whether you want to remove something or add something to the area, you must select it first. So use the selection tool at bay and mark your area using the mouse cursor. 

Ensure you select a big enough region or part of the image to ensure the AI can gather adequate information to work on the image.

2. Enabling Generative Fill

A dialog will also appear on your screen, giving you extra controls and options to tweak the AI’s work even more discreetly.

3. Tweak the Settings

In the dialog box that appears after selecting Generative fill, you can tweak the settings for Color Adaptation and Texture Adaptation as you like.

The key is finding the balance between these two so you can end up with an image that seamlessly integrates the changes you want on your image.

4. Start Generating

This is where the tool will take the longest to work on the changes and produce an output for review. If the adjustments required and the image itself are complex, it will take a longer time for Photoshop AI to process the image.

However, it’s important to note that the quality of the generated code may vary depending on the quality and quantity of the training data and the complexity of the task being performed.

Adobe Firefly Alternatives: Text To Image & Generative Fill

If you don’t want to create an Adobe account or need higher-quality AI images, you might be looking for Adobe Firefly alternatives.

The good news is that there are several apps that offer similar features to Firefly.

However, there is not one single platform that can replace Firefly.

You will need a combination of different AI image generators, such as Midjourney and Getimg to achieve similar functionality.

In this post, I will share the best options to provide an alternative to Firefly and how to get started.

Let’s jump in!

Adobe Firefly is a new AI image generation and editing platform.

The suite offers several features including:

Text to image

Generative fill (remove/replace objects)

Extend image

It is currently free to try.

Eventually, it appears these features will be entirely rolled into Photoshop, which starts at about $20 per month.

Adobe Pricing

There are several reasons why you might be looking elsewhere for an alternative to Firefly.

Speaking for myself, quality is the number one driver behind which products I choose to use.

While Firefly is versatile and easy to use, I still find myself using other apps like Midjourney to generate the original base image.

This is particularly important if your content is suggestive in nature.

Given Adobe’s position as a major public company, it is very unlikely that they will allow NSFW or violent image generation or editing on their platform.

For creatives who rely on unfiltered platforms, I’ll share some options later on that can be run locally on your computer.

While Firefly is free to try today, it is likely these AI features will require a paid subscription to Photoshop at some point in the future.

Currently, Photoshop starts at around $21 per month, which is cost prohibitive for many non-professionals and hobbyists.

Also, many people aren’t interested in creating an Adobe account.

This could either be because they have had poor experiences with the company in the past or the service is not currently available in their country.

There are several AI image generators that are either free or exceed Firefly when it comes to image quality.

For quality, Midjourney is hands-down the superior option to Firefly.

Midjourney costs $9.99 per month for the lowest tier.

You need to create a Discord account to use Midjourney.

But once you get started, the platform provides the best AI images compared to other apps like Firefly, Stable Diffusion, and Dall-E.

The downside to Midjourney is that it does not currently have a generative fill feature like Firefly.

So you will need to look elsewhere if you want to expand the edges of images, replace certain parts of an image, or add/remove objects.

While Midjourney provides a solid foundation, let’s take a look at Firefly alternatives for generative fill, which is also referred to as outpainting and inpainting.

Microsoft offers a free AI image-generation tool powered by Dall-E.

It’s super simple to use, but the quality can be hit or miss.

The nice part is that you can use Bing Image Generator to regenerate a text-to-image prompt several times until you get something suitable.

While there are certainly better quality options, Bing is a great intro to generative AI images without spending a dime.

This is where Firefly excels, so it is challenging to find an alternative that will outshine Adobe in this aspect.

The simplest option is called Getimg.

This app uses Stable Diffusion models to let you expand the borders of images using AI.

There’s also an AI text editor.

Getimg AI Editor

This lets you can also highlight certain parts of the image to change through a text-to-image prompt.

Functionally, GetIMG works similarly to Firefly.

GetIMG offers a free trial and paid plans start at $12 per month.

This option requires a little more technical setup and requires a desktop that is powerful enough to run Stable Diffusion locally.

The upside of going the local route is that you can also incorporate cool features like ControlNet, which lets you adjust the poses and composition of AI-generated images.

Any artwork can be enhanced with great fonts. Using fonts in Illustrator that fit the theme of your artwork can make it more interesting. For example, an artwork about water could use fonts that look like water. The more interesting fonts may not be available in Illustrator by default so they would have to be downloaded from trusted sources. Damaged or bad fonts can make Illustrator sluggish or make it crash or freeze. If Fonts are not working or showing, or are missing or create problems & issues for Illustrator, then this post will help you.

How to fix Font problems in Illustrator

If Fonts are not working or showing, or are missing or creating problems & issues for Illustrator, then the following suggestions will help you resolve the issue:

Remove third-party font management plug-in

Clear the system font cache

Validate all fonts to identify the damaged ones

1] Remove third-party font management plug-in

Before testing fonts, it is best to update or remove third-party font plug-ins. To access the third-party font plug-ins enable viewing of hidden files then do the following.

From the main window choose Program Files then Adobe then Adobe Illustrator then Plugins

Font management utility is Extensis, Suitcase, Font explorer, Font explorer Pro, RightFont, and NexusFont.

Copy the font management utility and paste it on the desktop. This will help if you need to return the folder to its original position.

Delete the plug-ins from the plugins folder.

2] Clear the system font cache

Font caching allows an application to load from external memory only the letters required to show a string. This means that the whole font does not need to reside in the addressable flash or RAM, but can be stored on a larger file system.

Font cache service is a Windows service that optimizes the performance of applications by caching commonly used font data. Applications will start this service if it is not already running. It can be disabled, though doing so will degrade application performance.

To clear the system font cache do the following:

Turn on Hidden files and folders

Close all Adobe applications.

Navigate to C:WindowsServiceProfilesLocalServiceAppDataLocal.

Delete the DAT or  chúng tôi  files (~FontCache-S-1-5-18.dat).

Identify and remove the damaged font, and relaunch the application.

If the problem recurs after you remove a font, continue to perform these steps until all damaged fonts are removed.
