How To Use Photoshop Ai Generative Fill

Adobe’s new Photoshop AI feature, “Generative fill,” could be a game-changer for budding artists. Adobe has released several AI additions to regular Photoshop, making it an even more effective tool for artists.

There is even a way for you to try this feature right now if you are an existing subscriber of Adobe. Generative Fill is one of Adobe Photoshop AI’s new features, and we will take a detailed look at How to Use Photoshop AI Generative Fill in this article.

What is Generative Fill?

Generative Fill is a step towards integrated AI for Adobe, allowing users to generate images based on existing patterns or selections in an image. We previously had the Firefly web tool to do that for us. But now Adobe has integrated the feature with the Photoshop tool itself.

To try the feature, you need to download the Photoshop AI Beta version from the official website, and as long as you have a Photoshop subscription, you can use it for any use-case scenario.

To note down the key features of Generative Fill, we have the removal of unwanted objects, an extension of backgrounds, and the creation of unique visual effects with just a single command.

We do not need to tinker with Photoshop’s settings to fill in areas with new textured realistic objects. With Generative Fill, Photoshop AI magically takes care of any detail you want to change about your image.

All of this can be done with just a single text prompt. Much like how ChatGPT creates text-based content based on text prompts, this tool does the same and produces an output in the image form.

How to Use Generative Fill: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Make your selection

Firstly, you must select a layer or area on the image where you want Generative Fill to work its magic. Whether you want to remove something or add something to the area, you must select it first. So use the selection tool at bay and mark your area using the mouse cursor.

Ensure you select a big enough region or part of the image to ensure the AI can gather adequate information to work on the image.

2. Enabling Generative Fill

A dialog will also appear on your screen, giving you extra controls and options to tweak the AI’s work even more discreetly.

3. Tweak the Settings

In the dialog box that appears after selecting Generative fill, you can tweak the settings for Color Adaptation and Texture Adaptation as you like.

The key is finding the balance between these two so you can end up with an image that seamlessly integrates the changes you want on your image.

4. Start Generating

This is where the tool will take the longest to work on the changes and produce an output for review. If the adjustments required and the image itself are complex, it will take a longer time for Photoshop AI to process the image.

5. Review and Refine

Once the generation process is complete, you will see the generated content overlaid on your image. Analyze the result created and make any changes you see to fine-tune the results further. You can also use tools like the Erase to work on any specific areas of the image.

6. Try the different Blending modes

The challenge for the AI tool primarily lies in seamlessly integrating the required changes into an existing image without affecting or changing the original image much in appearance.

This is where the different blending modes come into the picture. You will find the option of trying out different blending modes, letting you control the transparency and blending of the generated fill. So try the different options and pick the one that best suits your need.

7. Save the image

Once you are happy with the resultant image, save the image on your local storage. This is the same as what you see with the regular image-saving feature of Photoshop.

FAQs

Can Generative Fill Work with Complex Images?

Yes, Generative Fill can work on complex images seamlessly. The deep-learning algorithm built into the feature takes the current image information and analyzes it rigorously to produce an image that completely blends with the original image.

The results might need some refining if the image has too much information. But it is capable of handling complex images with ease.

Can I Undo the Generative Fill Operation?

Yes, Photoshop does let you undo the Generative Fill feature, much like how it lets users undo anything else. Just use the undo shortcut of the Ctrl + Z keys(Command + Z keys for Mac), which will instantly undo the Generative Fill effect.

It is normal to get outputs that are not suited to your liking, or the AI completely changed it to something other than what you wanted. In that case, just use the Undo shortcut, and it will work to undo the Generative Fill operation.

Conclusion

Photoshop AI’s Generative Fill is a step in the right direction for Adobe in these current times, where the use of AI in everything is becoming more of a norm.

Budding artists that are new to the world of image editing will find this feature very helpful as it would let them control all aspects of the image without deep diving into Photoshop’s settings and features.

A traditional or professional editor might want to stay away from this feature to maintain their signature of originality and creativity. Still, a rookie artist has a lot to gain from this feature.

So go about and use this tool as per your liking, and experiment with different prompts to get impressive results that let you materialize your unique imagination.

Generative Ai Coding: Top 10+ Use Cases & 4 Tools In 2023

Software development tends to take longer and cost more than expected.

Though generative AI tools have potential to accelerate the software development process, they come with challenges such as hallucination which can slow down coding or introduce critical issues to software.

To help technical leaders form their generative AI approach about software engineering, we will

Explain the top 3 use case areas of generative AI in coding

Highlight 4 generative AI coding tools

Provide best practices

Generative AI in Requirements Analysis

Without clear requirements, software development process cannot start. Generative AI applications in requirements analysis include:

1- Generating requirements

Analysts can prompt their high level requirements to fine-tuned large language models that have been exposed to best practice requirements documents.

2- Requirement completion

Analysts may forget important requirements (e.g. regarding security) which can be completed.

Generative AI in Coding 3- Code generation

Writing code with generative AI is possible through a technique known as neural code generation. This involves training a neural network on a large dataset of code examples, and then using the fine tuned network to generate code that is similar in structure and function to the examples it has been trained on.

Figure 1. Generating a simple Python script with OpenAI’s ChatGPT

4- Code completion

One of the most straightforward uses of generative AI for coding is to suggest code completions as developers type. This can save time and reduce errors, especially for repetitive or tedious tasks.

5- Code review

Generative artificial intelligence can also be used to make the quality checks of the existing code and optimize it either by suggesting improvements or by generating alternative implementations that are more efficient or easier to read.

7- Code refactoring

It can be used to automate the process of refactoring code, making it easier to maintain and update over time.

8- Style improvement

It can analyze code for adherence to coding style guidelines, ensuring consistency and readability across a codebase.

Generative AI in Testing

Testing is critical in software and generative AI can support testing in a similar way to its support for software coding. Generative AI applications in test automation and testing include:

9- Generating test cases 10- Generating test code 11- Test script maintenance 12- Test data generation 13- Test documentation 14- Test result analysis

Solutions are sorted by their introduction date, starting from the first introduced solution:

1- GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot, Microsoft’s AI system to write code, is an AI-powered code suggestion and generation tool developed in collaboration with OpenAI. It uses machine learning models trained on a vast corpus of public code to suggest code snippets and even entire functions as developers type.

Figure 3. Survey responses measuring dimensions of developer productivity when using GitHub Copilot

According to executives at GitHub and other companies, the aim of these tools is not to substitute developers, but to enhance their efficiency, similar to the way spell check and phrase auto-completion tools help people in writing documents.

2- ChatGPT

As an AI model developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT does not have a specific code generation function. However, as a language model trained on a large corpus of text data, it can generate text in natural language, which includes code snippets or examples, when prompted to do so.

For example, if a user asks “Can you provide an example of a Python function that calculates the sum of two numbers?” ChatGPT can generate a code snippet in response, such as in Figure 4.

Figure 4. An example of ChatGPT generating code for the given prompt and explaining it

While ChatGPT is not specifically designed for generating code, it can be trained on a dataset of code examples to improve its ability to generate code snippets and functions that are syntactically correct and functionally valid. However, it’s important to note that the quality of the generated code may vary depending on the quality and quantity of the training data and the complexity of the task being performed.

ChatGPT could be a good debugging companion; it not only explains the bug but fixes it and explain the fix 🤯 chúng tôi Amjad Masad ⠕ (@amasad) November 30, 2023

3- CodeWhisperer

Amazon’s CodeWhisperer is a code generation tool that utilizes diverse data sources, including chúng tôi and open-source code, to produce code that imitates the way a developer would write it.

4- IBM Watson Code Assistant

Though not yet released to the public, Watson Code Assistant relies on IBM chúng tôi foundation models to generate code.

Best practices for software development with generative AI 1- Address Intellectual Property (IP) concerns

For IP of code generated by LLMs to be deployed in a commercial software, these are the minimum requirements from a generative AI IP perspective:

Its codebase needs to be licensed to the end user (potentially via the developer of the LLM). There is an ongoing lawsuit about the use open source code in Github’s Copilot.[etfn_note]Matthew Butterick.”GitHub Copilot litigation“.Accessed May 28, 2023[/etfn_note]

LLM to be used should have a commercial license. For example, some popular open source LLMs lack commercial licenses.

2- Ensure data security of code

Enterprises have already leaked valuable source data while using generative AI applications.

3- Follow software development best practices

Like humans, software makes mistakes. Software engineering discipline has produced hundreds of paradigms like pair programming to improve the quality and effectiveness of software. They can help minimize the downsides of generative-AI-powered software development.

Adobe Firefly Alternatives: Text To Image & Generative Fill

If you don’t want to create an Adobe account or need higher-quality AI images, you might be looking for Adobe Firefly alternatives.

The good news is that there are several apps that offer similar features to Firefly.

However, there is not one single platform that can replace Firefly.

You will need a combination of different AI image generators, such as Midjourney and Getimg to achieve similar functionality.

In this post, I will share the best options to provide an alternative to Firefly and how to get started.

Let’s jump in!

Adobe Firefly is a new AI image generation and editing platform.

The suite offers several features including:

Text to image

Generative fill (remove/replace objects)

Extend image

It is currently free to try.

Eventually, it appears these features will be entirely rolled into Photoshop, which starts at about $20 per month.

Adobe Pricing

There are several reasons why you might be looking elsewhere for an alternative to Firefly.

Speaking for myself, quality is the number one driver behind which products I choose to use.

While Firefly is versatile and easy to use, I still find myself using other apps like Midjourney to generate the original base image.

This is particularly important if your content is suggestive in nature.

Given Adobe’s position as a major public company, it is very unlikely that they will allow NSFW or violent image generation or editing on their platform.

For creatives who rely on unfiltered platforms, I’ll share some options later on that can be run locally on your computer.

While Firefly is free to try today, it is likely these AI features will require a paid subscription to Photoshop at some point in the future.

Currently, Photoshop starts at around $21 per month, which is cost prohibitive for many non-professionals and hobbyists.

Also, many people aren’t interested in creating an Adobe account.

This could either be because they have had poor experiences with the company in the past or the service is not currently available in their country.

There are several AI image generators that are either free or exceed Firefly when it comes to image quality.

Source: Midjourney

For quality, Midjourney is hands-down the superior option to Firefly.

Midjourney costs $9.99 per month for the lowest tier.

You need to create a Discord account to use Midjourney.

But once you get started, the platform provides the best AI images compared to other apps like Firefly, Stable Diffusion, and Dall-E.

The downside to Midjourney is that it does not currently have a generative fill feature like Firefly.

So you will need to look elsewhere if you want to expand the edges of images, replace certain parts of an image, or add/remove objects.

While Midjourney provides a solid foundation, let’s take a look at Firefly alternatives for generative fill, which is also referred to as outpainting and inpainting.

Related: Midjourney Tips For Beginners

Source: Bing Image Generator

Microsoft offers a free AI image-generation tool powered by Dall-E.

It’s super simple to use, but the quality can be hit or miss.

The nice part is that you can use Bing Image Generator to regenerate a text-to-image prompt several times until you get something suitable.

While there are certainly better quality options, Bing is a great intro to generative AI images without spending a dime.

This is where Firefly excels, so it is challenging to find an alternative that will outshine Adobe in this aspect.

Getimg Example of Generative Fill

The simplest option is called Getimg.

This app uses Stable Diffusion models to let you expand the borders of images using AI.

There’s also an AI text editor.

Getimg AI Editor

This lets you can also highlight certain parts of the image to change through a text-to-image prompt.

Functionally, GetIMG works similarly to Firefly.

GetIMG offers a free trial and paid plans start at $12 per month.

This option requires a little more technical setup and requires a desktop that is powerful enough to run Stable Diffusion locally.

The upside of going the local route is that you can also incorporate cool features like ControlNet, which lets you adjust the poses and composition of AI-generated images.

The video below will show you how to get started with inpainting, aka generative fill.

How To Fix Font Problems In Illustrator

Any artwork can be enhanced with great fonts. Using fonts in Illustrator that fit the theme of your artwork can make it more interesting. For example, an artwork about water could use fonts that look like water. The more interesting fonts may not be available in Illustrator by default so they would have to be downloaded from trusted sources. Damaged or bad fonts can make Illustrator sluggish or make it crash or freeze. If Fonts are not working or showing, or are missing or create problems & issues for Illustrator, then this post will help you.

How to fix Font problems in Illustrator

If Fonts are not working or showing, or are missing or creating problems & issues for Illustrator, then the following suggestions will help you resolve the issue:

Remove third-party font management plug-in

Clear the system font cache

Validate all fonts to identify the damaged ones

1] Remove third-party font management plug-in

Before testing fonts, it is best to update or remove third-party font plug-ins. To access the third-party font plug-ins enable viewing of hidden files then do the following.

From the main window choose Program Files then Adobe then Adobe Illustrator then Plugins

Font management utility is Extensis, Suitcase, Font explorer, Font explorer Pro, RightFont, and NexusFont.

Copy the font management utility and paste it on the desktop. This will help if you need to return the folder to its original position.

Delete the plug-ins from the plugins folder.

2] Clear the system font cache

Font caching allows an application to load from external memory only the letters required to show a string. This means that the whole font does not need to reside in the addressable flash or RAM, but can be stored on a larger file system.

Font cache service is a Windows service that optimizes the performance of applications by caching commonly used font data. Applications will start this service if it is not already running. It can be disabled, though doing so will degrade application performance.

To clear the system font cache do the following:

Turn on Hidden files and folders

Close all Adobe applications.

Navigate to C:WindowsServiceProfilesLocalServiceAppDataLocal.

Delete the DAT or  chúng tôi  files (~FontCache-S-1-5-18.dat).

When you open the Serviceprofiles, Localservice, Appdata, and Local folders, for the first time, they will each give a warning that You don’t currently have permission to access this folder.

Press Continue to open the folder anyway.

Read: How to rebuild Font cache in Windows

3] Validate all fonts to identify the damaged ones

This step requires that you test the fonts in batches or one by one. This step may be time-consuming depending on how many fonts are installed.

Type Control Panel in Windows Search and press Enter.

In the Control Panel, open the Fonts folder.

Select all the fonts, and copy and paste them into a folder on the desktop.

Delete the fonts from the Fonts folder.

Copy and paste each batch of fonts from the desktop to the Fonts folder and launch the application. If you are unable to launch the application, the damaged font exists in the Fonts folder.

Identify and remove the damaged font, and relaunch the application.

If the problem recurs after you remove a font, continue to perform these steps until all damaged fonts are removed.
