Stolen profile pictures and fake accounts have always been one of the most annoying and seemingly unavoidable parts of social media. Stealing a profile picture is as simple as visiting a person’s page, viewing their profile picture and selecting the save image option. After more than a decade Facebook has finally added a feature that seems so simple it should have been something years ago, Profile Picture Guard.

With Profile Picture Gaurd enabled, it becomes impossible to quickly and easily download your Facebook profile picture. The only possible option left to acquire a profile picture with PPG enabled is to load the image, take a screenshot of the image, then crop out all the junk attached with the screenshot. For most people looking to steal a profile picture, this is far too much work so they’ll generally skip your profile and move to an easier target.

As is typical for social media platforms… This feature is being rolled out slowly, region by region, so you may not yet have access to it when you follow the steps shown below. However, it shouldn’t be all that far away. Well let’s hope so, it could end up like the famous no show of dark mode for Facebook….

Quicksteps for turning on Profile Picture Guard on Facebook:

Make sure Facebook is up to date.

    Open Facebook on your device.

    Tap the Hamburger menu icon.

    Go to your profile picture.

Open Facebook on your device, then tap the Hamburger icon (3 horizontal lines) to open Facebook Settings.

Next, tap your profile picture in the top left-hand corner (or wherever it is on your device)

This will take you to your profile, with your profile picture at the top of the screen. Now tap and hold your profile picture until you see a new menu appear. This may take a couple of seconds.

Finally, select the Profile Picture Guard option from the bottom of the list. You’ll see another screen that explains what this feature does showing the following information:

Other people cannot download or share your profile photo on Facebook.

Only you and your Facebook friends can tag your profile picture

The shield icon shows people that they should respect your profile picture

As we mentioned above, there are a few shortcomings of this feature, The first is that screenshotting will totally override any profile picture protection. The second is that this feature is only available from the mobile versions of Facebook. So if someone wants to copy your picture than can easily do so from the web version…

How To Turn Off Active Status On Facebook App And Web

With so much extra time on our hands, we have turned to social media apps to fill the void. With Facebook Watch now available on the app, people are spending more time than ever on the app. But this also means that everyone knows what you are up to because of that little green dot that appears next to your name. If you want to learn how to turn off your active status on Facebook, this article is for you!

    What is Facebook active status

Facebook wants your friends to know that you are available on the app so that they can contact you. While that definitely helps Facebook, you might not really want that. Facebook adds a little green indicator next to your name as soon as you launch the Facebook app or log in to the website.

This active status indicator remains as long as you are on the Facebook mobile app, the Facebook website, or even Facebook Messenger. To learn more about Facebook’s active status indicator, check out our article below.

► What Does The Green Dot Mean on Facebook or Messenger?

How to turn off active status on Facebook

Here is how you can turn off your active status indicator on Facebook. Once you do, no one will be able to tell when you come online or go offline!

    On Facebook mobile app

Turning off active status on your Facebook mobile app will only remove your active indicator on the app. Your active status will still show up on the Messenger app.

To turn off Facebook’s active status, launch the Facebook app, and log in with your credentials. Now tap the hamburger menu in the top right corner of the app.

Under Settings & Privacy, select ‘Settings’.

Under the ‘Privacy’ subsection, select ‘Active status’. Toggle the setting off.

    On Messenger app

It is quite easy to hide your active status on the Messenger app. Hiding your active status will prevent Facebook from adding a green dot next to your name and also prevent you from appearing in the ‘Active’ section of the Messenger app.

To turn off your active status on the Facebook Messenger app, launch the app, and tap your profile picture in the top left corner.

Now under ‘Profile’ tap ‘Active Status’. Toggle the setting off.

    On Facebook website

You can turn off your active status on the Facebook website easily. When you do this, your active status disappears from the inbuilt messaging function too.

You can now select if you want to appear inactive to certain people or everyone. Hit ‘Save’ once done.

Why would you want to turn off your active status?

Well, let’s put it this way. Your active status indicates that you are currently using the Facebook app. So if someone were to message you and you didn’t reply back, it would be obvious that you got the message but chose to ignore it.

Turning off your active status also dissuades people in your Friends list from chatting with you and expecting immediate replies. You can now peruse Facebook at peace!

Strange as it seems, the Facebook active status setting only applies to the device that you change it on. Facebook makes it clear that you need to change the active status setting on all devices that you are signed in to, to make the change take effect. Yes, this is quite annoying and a hindrance.

So if you want to make sure that no one can see your online active status, use the guides above on all your devices that are signed in to Facebook.

If you find that certain chats are blowing up your phone too often, you can turn notifications off for specific contacts as well. In this article, we’ll show you how to do all this and gain some peace of mind.

If banners are enabled, choose whether they are temporary.

    Have notifications make sounds.

How To Turn On Dark Mode For All Your Gadgets And Apps

Black text on a white background isn’t just boring—it’s blinding. When you’re using your phone or computer at night, the last thing you need is a bright screen torching your eyeballs. Turning the brightness down beyond its limit can help, but thankfully, companies have added new ways to darken their apps. If that appeals to you, here’s how to turn on dark mode for all the things.

Quick access Turn on dark mode for Windows 10 and 11

For a long time, Windows’ dark mode only affected the settings panel and the Microsoft Store. In 2023, Microsoft extended those grey backgrounds to the File Explorer as well, inching a bit closer to system-wide darkness. Couple that with a dark wallpaper and you’ve got the beginnings of a desktop you might actually want to use at night. Turning on dark mode for Windows is easy, but the final steps differ depending on which version of the operating system you have:

Windows 10: Open the Settings app and head to Personalization, then Colors, find Choose your color, and pick Dark.

Windows 11: Open the Settings app, go to Personalization, then Colors, find Choose your mode, and select Dark from the dropdown menu to the right.

How to use dark mode on a Mac

Mac users have had the dark mode option for a while, affecting the menu bar and plenty of apps, whether they’re built-in or added on. As with Windows, the steps you’ll need to take to turn on dark mode will differ if you’re using macOS Ventura or something older:

macOS Ventura or later: Open the Apple menu, select System Settings, then Appearance. At the top of the window, choose Dark.

    Dark modes for browsers

Darkening your browser is easy. Many of the most popular ones hook directly into the dark modes offered by Windows and macOS, so if you dim your OS, your browser should automatically follow. Safari actually doesn’t have a dark mode—it matches your Mac’s appearance. But beyond that, there are nuances for each browser and many have dark modes of their own.

Apple’s iPhones have a customizable dark mode, and a lot of iOS apps have their own built in (which we’ll talk about in a moment). To turn on dark mode in iOS, open Settings, go to Display & Brightness, and tap the bubble under Dark. If you want to automatically switch between light and dark, turn on the toggle switch next to Automatic and choose a schedule. And if you want a lighter or darker dark mode, you can adjust the Brightness slider to your heart’s content.

How to turn on Android’s dark mode

Every Android phone is a little different, thanks to version fragmentation and the various manufacturer skins companies such as Samsung add to their phones. If your phone is running the latest version of Android (13), you can head to Settings, Display, and toggle on the switch beside Dark theme.

Again, Android can differ from phone to phone, so how exactly it’ll implement dark mode on your device, and the steps you’ll need to take to to turn it on, may vary—chances are it’s somewhere in that Settings app.

Darken all your favorite apps, sites, and devices

Oh, hi there, Popular Science Twitter profile! PopSci staff

The above settings will cover the main operating systems, but a ton of apps offer their own dark modes, or something similar. Here are a few of the most common ones:

On Android, open the Gmail app, tap the three lines in the upper left corner and scroll down to find Settings. Tap on it, then hit General settings, and then Theme. Finally, tap the checkbox next to Dark. Sorry iPhone users—these options aren’t available to you.

[Related: 6 Twitter alternatives, in case you’re looking]

On mobile, tap your profile pic in the top left of your screen, and in the bottom left, tap the sun icon. There, you’ll be able to turn on Dark mode, choose to Use device settings, or activate the Dim or Lights out theme.

On the Android and iOS mobile apps, tap your profile picture, then Settings, General, and Appearance to get the same options.

    Reddit Slack

Slack’s Android mobile app offers a dark mode for each workspace. Tap on the profile pic of the workspace in the upper left corner of the screen, and at the bottom choose Preferences. There, choose Dark Mode and tap the checkbox next to On. On the desktop app the path is similar—in preferences, go to Themes and choose Dark. Unfortunately, the iOS app doesn’t have these options, so you’ll have to change your phone’s system theme.

    PlayStation 4 and 5

There’s no official dark mode on the two most recent PlayStation consoles, but you can adjust the settings to make many features darker. How you get there depends on the console you have:

PS4: From the home screen, bump the left joystick up and scroll over to Settings on the right. Find Themes, choose Select Theme, and find a dark one you like.

PS5: Open the console settings via the cog icon in the top right, go to Accessibility, Display and Sound, and pick High Contrast to darken aspects of your screen.

    Xbox One, X, and S

Press the Xbox button on your controller, select Profile & system, then Settings, General, and Personalization. From there, select My color & theme, find System theme, and choose Dark. You can also pick Scheduled to have your theme change at set times.

    Nintendo Switch

Navigate to the Switch’s System Settings from the home screen, then head to Themes and turn the Basic Black option on.

    Everywhere else

You’re probably starting to get the idea. If you have a favorite app not listed here, check its settings to see if it supports a dark mode. Plenty do, including Wikipedia, Instagram, Pocket, IMDb, Waze, Google Maps, countless weather apps, and more. Dark websites are a bit rarer, but some browser extensions (like Dark Mode for Chrome) can alter many of them for you.

How To Fix A Macbook That Won’T Turn On

    Kris Carlon / Android Authority

There aren’t a lot of reasons why a MacBook won’t turn on. However, they are all equally scary. People keep a lot of stuff on their Macs these days and being unable to access that stuff is not a good feeling. Let’s go through the reasons why a MacBook won’t turn on and see if we can help you skip a trip to the Apple Store.

To fix a MacBook that won’t turn on, first check your power connections to make sure everything is plugged in and functioning. Then, try pressing and holding the power button for ten seconds. If that doesn’t work, try unplugging your accessories and resetting the SMC. There isn’t much else to try after that, and you’ll have to take it to a repair shop.

How to troubleshoot a MacBook that won’t power on

    Other potential issues to consider

How to troubleshoot a MacBook that won’t power on

Let’s start with the basics as per Apple’s support page. These steps are pretty basic and should only take a few minutes to perform.

    Check your power connection

    Oliver Cragg / Android Authority

The first thing you should try is checking your power connections.

Make sure your MacBook charger is plugged into the wall. Make sure the wall socket is working.

Make sure your MacBook charger is also plugged into the MacBook completely. Try a different charging port if you can, since some MacBooks come with USB-C chargers.

Try using a different charger to make sure it’s not a broken charging brick. Alternatively, try testing your charger on a different MacBook if you can.

These are fairly basic steps, but sometimes people plug their Macs into wall sockets controlled by a light switch, and the light switch is switched off. These things happen.

Press and hold your MacBook’s power button for 10-20 seconds.

Release, and then attempt to power on your MacBook.

Note — MacBooks with Touch ID use the Touch ID button as a power button.

    Unplug all of your accessories

    Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority

Accessories can cause some issues that can result in a MacBook refusing to turn on. Try unplugging everything from your MacBook, including external displays, mice, keyboards, flash drives, and anything else.

From there, do the power cycle trick just above this and see if everything works okay. If it does, there’s a good chance one of your accessories caused the issue. Usually, it’s just a temporary issue, and plugging everything back in will work fine, but it can also occasionally mean that an accessory is messed up.

    Power down your MacBook.

Press and hold Shift+Control+Option. While holding those down, press and hold down the Power button.

Hold all four buttons together for 10-20 seconds and release.

Attempt to turn on your MacBook.

Note — MacBooks with Apple Silicon reportedly reset their own SMC every time the machine turns off and back on again, so this method won’t work with Apple Silicon MacBooks.

If you need more guidance, we have a whole tutorial on how to reset the SMC on any Mac.

    Reset NVRAM (or PRAM)

    Oliver Cragg / Android Authority

Resetting the NVRAM is a lot like resetting the SMC. It can correct some internal software issues and get you back on your machine. PRAM is the same as NVRAM, but PRAM was only used on older MacBooks. The process works with both types.

    Shut down your MacBook.

Press and hold the power button. As soon as your machine makes any noises whatsoever, immediately press and hold Command+Option+P+R.

Hold down all the keys for about 20 seconds or until your MacBook reboots twice.

If this was the problem, the MacBook should boot normally.

Pro tip — You’ll want to use your MacBook’s built-in keyboard for this. The machine may not recognize a USB or Bluetooth keyboard keypress in time to make all this work.

Note — Apple Silicon MacBooks test their own NVRAM on each boot and resets automatically if needed. The below method doesn’t work with Apple Silicon MacBooks.

If your screen turns on but doesn’t boot, try getting into the recovery

    Joe Hindy / Android Authority

If your MacBook’s screen turns on but doesn’t boot, try getting into the recovery. From there, you can reinstall macOS, which can solve a lot of problems. Luckily, a macOS reinstall doesn’t wipe your machine’s data by default, so you can do this without losing everything unless something goes horribly wrong.

Apple Silicon MacBooks — While entirely shut down, press and hold the power button to enter into recovery mode.

Intel MacBooks — While entirely shut down, turn the Mac on and immediately press and hold Command+R. If that doesn’t work, try Command+Option+R or Option+Shift+Command+R.

Once in recovery, navigate the menus until it gives you the option to reinstall macOS.

Follow the menus until installation begins.

If the issue was caused by corrupt system files, this should fix it.

If you’re having some trouble, we have a longer tutorial for reinstalling macOS here with more granular instructions.

Bad battery — A bad battery will inevitably happen to all MacBooks someday because batteries degrade. You can tell this is the problem if it doesn’t turn on when only on battery power, but it boots up okay when plugged into the charger. Read our guide to learn more about MacBook battery health.

Bad logic board — A bad logic board can happen to any MacBook. Signs that it might be a bad logic board include seeing no activity whatsoever when hitting the power button, even with the power cable connected.

Broken charger — The most common issue is a burned-out charger. Try using your charger on another machine if you can, and try to find another charger to try on your MacBook.

Bad charging port — This is slightly rarer but can still cause this problem. If you plug in your charger and you don’t see the charging light turn on, this may be an issue.

Bad screen — Sometimes, the MacBook is functioning normally, and you can’t see anything because the screen is dead. You’ll be able to hear all of the boot noises, including fans on older MacBooks, but you won’t be able to see anything. That’s how you know it could be a screen issue.

You should take your MacBook to a repair shop if you suspect that the charging port, logic board, or battery has gone bad. That’ll require opening up the MacBook and replacing components. A broken charger can be replaced pretty easily, though, and can be returned for a refund if it turns out not to be the problem, so we recommend trying that first.

Up next: The best Macbooks money can buy right now

There are a variety of reasons this can happen, including corruption in the SMC, NVRAM, or system files. Your battery may be dead, the charger may be dead, or your MacBook might be booting, and your screen is broken, so you can’t see it. There are a ton of different reasons why this might be happening.

Your best bet is taking the MacBook to the Apple store and having them run diagnostics. The tutorial we wrote will fix virtually any software problem, but hardware problems require an exact diagnosis before repair.

Learning To Turn On The Aggression

Learning to Turn On the Aggression BU Hillel director teaches students to be fast and furious in their own defense

How to “turn on the aggression” is one of the more important lessons imparted by Rabbi Michael Beyo in his weekly class in Krav Maga, a self-defense system used by the Israeli Defense Forces. The acting executive director of the Florence & Chafetz Hillel House makes the point very loud and clear, repeatedly urging students in his class to scream furiously during fights with attackers.

“Fear is important,” says Beyo, “because it can drive us to react, but for somebody who does not study and does not train, fear often makes them freeze, and you don’t want to freeze in a situation. You want to react.”

Fear, in fact, is what compelled Caitlin Coons to enroll in the class. While traveling abroad Coons (SED’15) was assaulted on a subway, and to her great distress, she froze.

“You always think you know what you’re going to do when you’re attacked,” she says. “But it’s important to be able to power through the fear and defend yourself.”

Beyo makes the sessions lively, even fun. In a recent class, students demonstrated ways to escape from various grips and attacks, struggling intensely one moment and bursting out in laughter the next.

“Krav Maga, first of all, is not an art,” says Beyo, because martial arts focus on the perfection of specific techniques and may involve many classes before students get to actually fight. In contrast, he says, “Krav Maga is much more immediate and uses natural reactions instead of trying to impose new techniques to our body.”

Ideally, says Beyo, Krav Maga (or “contact combat,” קרב מגע, in Hebrew) is not about fighting. It’s about ending fights: the main goal is to neutralize a threat and finish a fight as quickly as possible. The defense system combines techniques from boxing, Muay Thai, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and grappling with realistic fight training.

Beyo’s classes are open to all students, and he tailors the scenarios to the campus environment. “The most important thing,” he says, “is for the students to be aware of their surroundings because so much can be avoided by doing the right thing at the right time.” He compares the real-world emphasis to that of BU’s rape aggression defense (RAD) classes.

The technique was developed in Bratislava, Slovakia, in the 1930s by Imi Lichtenfeld, who defended the streets of the Jewish quarter against anti-Semitic thugs, along with a group of Jewish wrestlers and boxers. Today the defense system, which has been refined over the years, is officially used for combat training in the Israel Defense Forces and has been adapted internationally for civilian, police, and military applications.

“It is an extremely useful and versatile self-defense system,” says class member Andrew Filippi (CAS’15). “I’ve taken several in my life, but this one is probably the best.”

Beyo first learned Krav Maga in Milan, Italy, where acts of anti-Semitism and targeted vandalism were common. “There were many situations where I or other Jews would be harassed in the streets because we were Jewish,” says Beyo, who lived in Milan until age 16. “So I decided to learn Krav Maga in order to start learning how to defend myself and defend others.”

Beyo went to rabbinical seminaries in London and Paris and ended up in Israel, where he worked for a counterterrorism special unit under the office of the prime minister. The job made good use of his skills in Krav Maga, taught in every branch of the security apparatus of the State of Israel.

In 2005, Beyo moved to New York, where he consulted for international real estate conglomerates, then to Atlanta, where he helped build a solar and wind renewable energy company with partners in Israel and Italy. He was a guest lecturer on intra-Israeli conflict at the Georgia Institute of Technology and at Emory University, published two books on bioethics and Jewish law, and taught Krav Maga. He came to BU in August 2012 as a rabbi and associate director at Hillel, and in January, he took over as acting executive director while Rabbi Joseph Polak (Hon.’95) is on sabbatical.

Krav Maga is free and open to all BU students. The spring 2013 classes end with the semester; check for information about fall 2013 classes on the Hillel House website. Students must register ahead by e-mailing Jen Gutman at [email protected]. Visit Rabbi Beyo’s blog here or email him at [email protected].
