Suggested January 2024 How To Properly Protect Your Laptop And Prevent Laptop Theft

Laptops are among the most valuable things we carry around with us, valued anywhere between $500 and $3000. This makes them perhaps one of the most dreaded items to lose from your person. According to a 2010 study on computer and electronic theft performed by MacTech, over a million computers were stolen each year in the United States alone, and the vast majority of them were laptops.

Narrow the Chances

The best remedy is prevention. Leaving your laptop out in the open while you go do something else is obviously not good. Most thieves will see this as a wonderful opportunity to slip in and grab the device. It eliminates the chance of confrontation which could damage the merchandise and possibly injure the thief. When you’re on a terrace having a drink while browsing through your laptop, and you suddenly feel the need to relieve yourself in the bathroom, take the laptop with you.

Besides keeping your laptop on your person at all times, you should definitely also make sure that you’re using it in an area that is neither too crowded nor too depopulated. Fewer people means fewer possible witnesses. The same, paradoxically, can happen in very crowded places. All the commotion and noise deafens people to their surroundings, making them less apt to notice that someone is stealing a laptop.

Lock It

If you happen to be one of the many unfortunate victims of theft, it helps to have some way to block the laptop from being usable. Some laptops may have a hardware-based mechanism that prevents them from being used without some form of authentication (like a key). But if you’re not lucky enough to have one of those, you’ll need to use software-based methods (like having a password for every account on your operating system and eliminating guest accounts for Windows).

The good part about using Linux in this situation is that passwords are mandatory from the get-go. If you’re a Windows user and don’t use passwords to log into your OS, you’re going to have to get used to it!

Track It

You should have ways to track your laptop, not just because it might get stolen, but also because it can be equally useful when you lose it. For loss recovery you could use privacy-friendly tagging services like BoomerangIt or ReturnMe. For tracking you could use Prey, as we’ve previously suggested in this article about remotely wiping your Linux computer. It works on a variety of operating systems and platforms.

Just be aware that remote wiping should be done as a last resort measure, although you should take into account the possibility of data theft if you have a lot of sensitive material such as credit card numbers and bank account details. You should always have a backup of your sensitive data somewhere safe. Laptops are not necessarily the best candidates for that.

Combine all three of these, and the likelihood that you will suffer from theft drops enormously. Remember, theft prevention is all about contingency. Even if you try everything to stop it, there’s still a chance it will happen. By that point it is good to have an execution plan when things go sour.

How To Recalibrate Your Laptop Battery

You checked your computer and Windows said you have 40 percent battery power left, but it died on you. What just happened?

No matter how well you treat your laptop battery, its capacity will diminish eventually. No matter how top of the line your computer was at the time you purchased it, its built-in power meter can sometimes give you incorrect estimates as to how much battery life you have left.

Even if you let your battery discharge a little bit before plugging it back in, it might not always help to extend battery life. What tends to happen is that it tends to confuse the battery meter. Unavoidable factors such as age, heat and typical usage will decrease its capacity.

Manufacturers generally recommend calibrating the battery every two to t three months. This helps keep your battery readings accurate. You may need to do it sooner if your laptop dies on you without any previous warnings.

While your computer may have a preinstalled app for you to use, it is always helpful to understand how to do so manually. Below are some easy steps to get your battery recalibrated in no time.

Top Up Your Battery

You need to top up your battery first, so plug in your laptop and let the battery charge. When it’s at 100%, leave the laptop plugged in for a few hours so the battery has a chance to cool because heat can give you inaccurate results.

Set Up Battery

Set Up Hibernation Point

You want the battery to work as long as it possibly can. To do so, find “battery” in “power options” and make sure it is on “hibernate.” Then, check “low battery action” and ensure that all options are set to “nothing.” Under “critical battery level,” choose 5 percent.

Let Your Battery Drain Then Recharge

Now all you need to do is wait before charging it back to 100%. Usually this takes at least 5 hours, or you can even leave your laptop overnight. You can still use your laptop as you normally would.

Revert Settings

Once you’ve completed the previous step, go ahead and change your settings back to the way they were before. You might consider switching off the screen sooner or even get your computer to sleep after ten minutes to help you conserve power. But this is all up to you and your preferences.

Conclusion

Even if it took many hours (even up to a day), your laptop now can tell what the capacity of your battery is.  Over time, though, you might find that you need to repeat the process again, especially if your computer dies on you without warning, or you don’t think you’re getting an accurate reading.

Asus Laptop Buying Guide: Asus’ Laptop Lineup Explained

Also see: AMD vs Intel

Note: This ASUS laptop buyer’s guide excludes the TUF and Republic of Gamers (ROG) sub-brands from ASUS.

ASUS vivoBook series

The vivoBook series is the company’s mainstream laptop series that aims to serve the general population, with offerings for home, office, and student use. These machines mostly focus on productivity and general use, so you won’t see any fancy GPU options here. They do offer great value for money, though. The vivoBook series has four tiers: the vivoBook, vivoBook S, vivoBook Pro, and vivoBook Flip.

ASUS vivoBook is the base tier of this series. Designed for home use, these laptops currently come with Windows 10 Home edition. Some of these laptops ship with Windows in the S Mode, but the buyer can switch to the normal, full Windows 10 in settings. You can get the ASUS vivoBook with a 14-inch, 15.6-inch, or 17.3-inch screen.

CPU options include up to 11th Gen Intel Core processors, and up to Ryzen 5000 series processors. There are options for lower-end NVIDIA GeForce and AMD Radeon GPUs. The vivoBook series also comes with a few interesting features, like a fingerprint sensor for Windows Hello, and an illuminated numeric keypad integrated into the trackpad.

ASUS vivoBook 15.6-Inch Laptop

The vivoBook 15 is the heart of all ASUS laptops. It packs an Intel Core i3 processor and enough RAM and storage to help you get by. Not to mention the full-size keyboard.

ASUS vivoBook S

The vivoBook S series sits a tad higher in the lineup than the vivoBook series. These are still the regular home, office, and student-use laptops, but they come with a sleeker design and slightly better specifications. The ASUS VivoBook S series of laptops also ships with Windows 10 Home. Size options include 13.3-inch, 14-inch, and 15.6-inch screens. The vivoBook S13 actually makes our list of best laptops for 2023.

CPU options include up to 11th Gen Intel Core and up to AMD Ryzen 5000 processors. GPU options are again at the lower end, with NVIDIA GeForce and AMD Radeon Vega available. All in all, these are slightly better vivoBooks, with some SKUs sporting features like Thunderbolt 4 USB-C. You get marginally better hardware here, making it a sweet mid-range series of laptops for those looking for a little more performance out of their everyday machine.

ASUS vivoBook S15

The vivoBook S15 comes ready to put in a long day’s work thanks to an 11th-generation Intel Core i5 processor. You can also choose from a near-rainbow of bright hues to stand out from the crowd.

ASUS vivoBook Pro

We all know the “Pro” moniker has become a bit overused, and that applies here too. ASUS does have pro laptops in its lineup, but the vivoBook Pro series is just the higher-tier vivoBook option. The vivoBook Pro only comes in a 15.6-inch option. While ASUS still lists these laptops on its site, it hasn’t updated them in a while.

The website lists the vivoBook Pro as configurable with up to 9th Gen Intel Core CPUs, and GPU options up to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650. The laptop even comes with Windows 10 Home and not Pro. The only somewhat Pro part of this laptop is that it has options for displays with up to 4K resolution, and up to 120Hz refresh rate. These laptops aren’t available for sale anymore, and even if you find one, we wouldn’t recommend buying it.

ASUS vivoBook Pro

The ASUS vivoBook Pro is no longer the newest model on the block, but it packs solid specs nonetheless. You can tap into a Core i7 processor and a hefty 17.3-inch display for all of your productivity needs.

ASUS vivoBook Flip

ASUS has a few laptops that come with a 360-degree hinge, allowing the laptop to be used as a tablet. These convertibles use the Flip branding, and that’s exactly what the vivoBook Flip series offers. If you’re looking for a versatile vivoBook that you can flip into a tablet, this series is the one for you. ASUS offers two sizes with the vivoBook Pro — most of the offerings come with 14-inch screens, but ASUS has one with the almost obsolete screen size of 11.6 inches.

With the OS, you get a mix of Windows 10 Home and Pro. CPU options include up to 11th Gen Intel Core i7, and up to AMD Ryzen 5000 series chips with integrated GPUs. ASUS also includes a stylus with these laptops. The thin-and-light design goes well with the flip form factor, making this series a great upper mid-range ultraportable laptop option.

ASUS vivoBook Flip

If you’ve ever wanted the portability of a vivoBook with the flexibility of a 2-in-1, look no further. This 14-inch model packs an AMD Ryzen 7 processor and a whopping 512GB of storage.

ASUS ZenBook series

ZenBook is the mainstream laptop series from ASUS. ASUS markets the ZenBook series of laptops as premium, thin, and light. This series provides a great balance of portability, premium feel, and power. These are upper mid-range and high-end laptops, and there are a total of five sub-series to serve different use cases.

The base ZenBook tier has thin and light laptop options for productivity and media consumption. There are a lot of options here, including the ZenBook 13, ZenBook 14, and ZenBook 15, with screen sizes of 13.3-inch, 14-inch, and 15.6-inch, respectively. The ZenBook 13 also offers OLED screen options.

The ZenBook series balances the premium segment with the everyday segment. You get Windows 10 Home with this one. CPU options are up to the latest spec with the 2023 refresh, with up to 11th Gen Intel Core and up to AMD Ryzen 5000 series CPU options available. GPU options for the ZenBook 13 and 14 include lower-end NVIDIA and AMD chips. The ZenBook 15, however, gets dedicated NVIDIA GPU options, capping out at the GTX 1650 Max-Q. It also gets 4K display options.

ASUS Zenbook 15

Achieve zen with a nearly bezel-free display and a sleek Pine Gray finish. The ASUS Zenbook 14 is well-equipped with a Core i7 processor and a touchscreen trackpad for easy access to apps.

ASUS ZenBook S

ZenBook S is the next tier in the ZenBook series. It currently offers only one model: the ZenBook S UX393, with little to set it apart from the base ZenBook series. You only get the Intel CPU options here, with an 11th Gen Core i7 CPU. What sets this series apart is the 13.9-inch 3.3K touchscreen display with an aspect ratio of 3:2. It’s an ultraportable laptop with a super classy design and definitely stands out in the ZenBook lineup.

You get three size options: a 13.3-inch screen, a 14-inch screen, or a 15.6-inch screen. With regards to CPU options, there is no AMD here, only up to 11th Gen Intel Core i7 chips.

GPU options for the ZenBook Flip 13 and 14 are limited to Intel’s integrated Iris Xe due to space and thermal constraints. The ZenBook Flip 15, however, gets the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti. Display options are OLED across the board, with options for Full HD and 4K resolutions. Some models also get a 4,096 pressure level stylus support.

ASUS ZenBook Flip

The ZenBook Flip is perfectly portable at 13.3-inches, but it also packs the flexibility of a true 2-in-1 device. You get Intel’s 11th-generation Core i7 processor with 16GB of RAM to run the show.

ASUS ZenBook Duo

There’s also the ZenBook Duo, which brings the much-loved secondary display above the keyboard, called the ScreenPad Plus. It’s a lower-end version of the ZenBook Pro Duo. You get the 10th Gen Intel CPU, a choice to pick the NVIDIA GeForce MX250 GPU, as well as a choice between Windows 10 Home and Pro. ASUS hasn’t given the Duo the 11th Gen Intel treatment yet, but if it does, it should make for a great work machine.

ASUS Chromebook

Chromebooks have gained a ton of traction in recent years, and ASUS has quite a few options in its Chromebook lineup. There are plenty of sizes to choose from here, including the smaller 10.5-inch ASUS Chromebook tablet with detachable keyboard, as well as the 11.6-inch, 12-inch, 14-inch, and 15.6-inch sizes. The Chromebook 12, 14, and 15 also have options under the laptop/tablet convertible Flip brand.

ASUS ExpertBook

ASUS markets the ExpertBook series under its commercial laptop category. These are enterprise-facing laptops with a focus on productivity. All the laptops come with Windows 10 Pro and up to 11th Gen Intel Core i7 chips. They also have what ASUS calls military-grade durability. There are two series: the essential P series and the premium B series.

The B series gets the better spec-sheet, with up to 2 x 2 TB PCIe SSDs. The B series also has a better design, with ASUS calling the ExpertBook B9 “the lightest business laptop in the world.” Graphics are integrated, and ASUS also provides the option of the touchpad numerical keypad for some models.

Picking the best ASUS laptop for you

To reiterate, ASUS has a ton of laptop series that we have taken a look at in this guide. The only category of laptops we haven’t covered here is gaming, but we will have dedicated guides for the ASUS TUF and ROG gaming laptops out soon.

Picking the right laptop for you shouldn’t be too difficult if you know what you will be using it for.

Best Laptop 2023: Which Laptop Should I Buy?

While 2-in-1 devices are more popular than ever, that’s never fully materialised. During the pandemic, people around the world rediscovered just how useful laptops can be, and they seem here to stay.

However, if you’ve decided to buy a new laptop, deciding what to go for can be very difficult. Even if you’ve decided on a screen size, rough design or brand, there are still so many devices that could be right for you.

But value is your primary concern, we’ve also scoured the web for laptop deals and have a separate guide to the best budget laptops.

Best laptops 2023 FAQ

1.

How much should you spend on a laptop?

The very best laptops usually command a high price tag, but you don’t necessarily need to spend upwards of $1,000/£1,000 for a great experience.

These days, you can get a capable budget laptop for $500/£500 or even less, although it’ll probably only be suitable for everyday tasks such as web browsing, emails, word processing and the occasional video call.

2.

What screen size of laptop do you need?

Laptop screens range from around 11in to 18in. A smaller screen might be harder to work on and offer fewer ports, but it will be more portable.

A big-screened laptop, on the other hand, is probably a desktop replacement and so not designed to be taken everywhere with you. Generally, 13in or 14in is the sweet spot between usability and portability.

Some cheap laptops have a low 720p resolution, but it’s worth aiming for at least Full HD (1920×1080) or higher. A QHD or 4K screen is nice to have, but not necessary for most people. While they’re increasingly rare in 2023, a matt display trades some vivid colours in exchange for a less reflective screen.

A touchscreen isn’t always required , but it might be preferable to connecting a mouse or using the trackpad all the time. But on 2-in-1 laptops, this is a necessity.

High refresh rate displays are beginning to make their way into consumer laptops, but 60Hz remains the standard. Something above this will give the screen extra fluidity and help it feel more responsive, but the effect isn’t as noticeable as on smartphones.

OLED panels are generally considered higher quality than LCD, but each have their own benefits and drawbacks. Some laptops are beginning to move to mini-LED technology these days, too.

3.

How much laptop storage do you need?

The amount of storage you require will depend on what you plan to use the laptop for. As a general rule, get as much as possible without it feeling like you’re wasting money on the upgrade.

An SSD will help your laptop run faster, but typically offers less space for your files (consider supplementing it with a portable USB drive). You can also use cloud storage – but only when you have an internet connection.

Memory (RAM) is where programs and files are stored only while you’re using them, so more is usually better. Consider 4GB as a minimum, although 8GB or even 16GB will be the sweet spot for most people.

4.

Which laptop processor is best?

Unless you’re going to run complex software or demanding games, you don’t need a top-spec processor. If the latter is something you plan on doing, we have a separate round-up of the best cheap gaming laptops under $1,000/£1,000.

But regardless of your budget, you’re probably looking at a device powered by Intel or AMD. The former’s latest 13th-gen Raptor Lake CPUs will be found in many 2023 laptops, but the Ryzen 7000 Series won’t be far behind in terms of popularity. There are also ARM-based Qualcomm processors such as the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, but they still struggle slightly for performance and app compatibility.

Of course, Apple’s MacBooks run the company’s own Apple Silicon instead. Various iterations of M1 and M2 chips have already been released, and it looks like more are on the way.

5.

Should I buy a thin and light laptop?

A thin and light laptop is much the same as any other laptop, although your priorities may be slightly different. Top of the list might be ultraportable laptop that’s light but will last a long time on battery power.

However, other people want an device that’s powerful and can handle demanding applications without breaking your back when you carry it around. Both are available.

Compromises are inevitable if you want a thin and light laptop, though. There’s less space for a battery, so it’s common to find shorter runtimes. Thin laptops also tend to have shallow key travel – look at specific reviews to see how much of an issue this is.

You’ll may miss out on ports and connectivity, too. These can be extremely limited, and you’ll want to avoid carrying a hub or adapter with you if possible. If HDMI or USB-A is important, make sure the laptop you’re considering has them.

Surface Laptop 3 Vs Surface Laptop 4: Is It Worth The Upgrade?

Surface Laptop 3 vs Surface Laptop 4: is it worth the upgrade?

The Surface Laptop 4 is pretty much official, and it comes in two versions: AMD and Intel.

We went ahead and decided to do a preview roundup on how it would compare with the current model.

We’re also expecting Microsoft to unveil the Surface Headphones 2 and other accessories at an upcoming event as soon as next week.

Yes, it’s already confirmed – the Surface Laptop 4 is a reality and it could be launched as early as next week. WinFuture was first to discover an official support page on Microsoft’s sites where you can allegedly already download AMD and Intel drivers for the upcoming device.

However, we went ahead and tried to download the actual drivers, but in the end got only an empty Notepad file. So yes, somebody in the Redmond building made a small mistake and confirmed what was already pretty much known.

Surface Laptop 4 comes with AMD and Intel versions

As it was previously rumored, the new Laptop from the Surface family will be released in two versions: sporting either AMD or Intel versions. The same WinFuture hints that the device could feature the following specs:

How does it fare against the Surface Laptop 3?

Naturally, the first ones to think of buying the Surface Laptop 4 will probably include also current owners of the Surface Laptop 3.

According to Winfuture, here’s a complete table featuring all of the Surface Laptop 4’s specs:

AMD version or custom chips?

As you probably know, the Surface Laptop 3 features the 3000-series chips; and you’d think that the next logical step is the 4000 series. However, of course you want the latest and greatest – and that’s AMD’s brand new Ryzen 5000 mobile processors.

Still, there’s hearsay that Microsoft could be getting custom chips directly from AMD ( referred to a chip as a Ryzen 7 Microsoft Surface Edition). If that happens, then the laptop’s CPU could be a mix of the 4000-series and the 5000-series. And in that situation, yes, the upgrade makes more sense.

Same looks, same storage choices

If you are looking to make the jump hoping for better looks, you’ll be disappointed: the specs and form-factor of the Surface Laptop 4 seem to be in line with previous models. Thus, if you were hoping for narrower bezels or perhaps a larger trackpad, then this isn’t the laptop you’re looking for.

You’ll be able to choose between 13.5- and 15-inch models available, with a 3:2 aspect ratio. The same 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage will be present in the newest model, as well.

Thunderbolt 4 connectivity is apparently also missing, but we’ll be able to know for sure once the product is officially presented.

NOTE

The Surface Laptop isn’t yet officially released, so we can’t yet compare the two laptops. But with so much information around, we decided to do a small roundup. When the official launch will take place, we will make sure to update with the actual specs.
