Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) is an HTTP extension that provides a collaborative way of editing and managing your files on a remote web server. Here we will show you how to map a WebDAV drive in Windows so you can access your remote files directly in File Explorer.

In order to connect to the WebDAV directory in Windows, you’ll need the WebDAV site URL, your WebDAV account login details, and a name for the shortcut or connection. All three allow you to map WebDAV by mounting its folder as a mapped drive so you can view, edit, or delete files from the remote web server using your computer.

How to Map a WebDAV Drive in Windows

Alternately, you can also use the “Map network drive” drop-down box in the Computer tab of File Explorer. Select “Map network drive” from the list. This is only available in Windows 10.

    In the new dialog box, enter the drive letter you want to map to and the folder where you’ll add or edit WebDAV files on your local computer.

    Change the setting by going to Start and typing “control panel.” Select Control Panel when it appears.

    Select “Network & Sharing Center.”

    Turn on Network Discovery and press “Save Changes.”

      Check the “Reconnect at sign-in” and “Connect using different credentials” boxes. Checking the “Reconnect at sign-in” box allows the WebDAV connection to be restored when you reboot your computer.

      What to Do If You Can’t Access Your WebDAV Folder?

      Even if you were able to successfully map a WebDAV drive in Windows, it doesn’t mean you’ll be able to access content within it. The most common cause is the folder is stored on a server using an older version of Windows.

      This also happens if you’re not using the latest version of Windows. For example, if you used Windows XP and the folder contains more than 1,000 files, you may not be able to see the file you need.

      Another issue is experienced when you restart your computer and are not automatically reconnected. This usually means the WebClient service is either disabled or set to Manual. Here’s how to change that.

      How To Create Dev Drive On Windows 11

      On Windows 11 (build 23466 and higher releases), you can create and manage Dev Drives, and in this guide, you will learn how. “Dev Drive” is a feature that allows developers to create regular and virtual storage using the Resilient File System (ReFS) with custom file system optimizations, Microsoft Defender Antivirus in performance mode, and features to enable better management of performance and security profile.

      This guide will teach you the steps to set up virtual Dev Drives on Windows 11.

      Create Dev Drive on Windows 11 (virtual)

      To create a Dev Drive on Windows 11, use these steps:

      Select the “Create new VHD” option.

      Confirm a descriptive name for the drive.

      Confirm a location to store the virtual drive.

      Quick tip: Usually, you can want to store the VHD or VHDX file on a secondary drive for better performance.

      Specify the size of the virtual drive as equal to or larger than 50GB.

      Check the VHDX option.

      Check the Dynamically expanding option to allow the drive to grow as more data is written.

      Quick note: The “Fixed size” will allocate the maximum size when the drive is created.

      Select the “GPT (GUID Partition Table)” option to assign a partition style to the drive.

      Confirm a label for the virtual drive.

      Choose the drive letter.

      (Optional) Use the default size specified in the setting.

      After you complete the steps, the Dev Drive will be created and accessible from File Explorer on Windows 11.

      Create Dev Drive on Windows 11 (physical)

      Windows 11 also allows you to create a Dev Drive as a volume on the hard drive instead of using virtualization. In other words, you can also create a volume on a hard drive with the benefits of the Dev Drive, including security and performance, using ReFS technology.

      To create a Dev Drive on a physical hard drive, use these steps:

      Open Settings.

      Select the “Unallocated space on disk” option.

      Confirm a descriptive name for the drive in the “Label” setting.

      Confirm the letter for the drive in the “Drive letter” setting.

      Confirm the size (equal to or more than 50GB) in the “Size (MB)” setting.

      After you complete the steps, the volume will be created in the physical drive using the ReFS file system on Windows 11.

      Resize Dev Drive on Windows 11

      You can resize the volume of a Dev Drive as long as the available space on the virtual drive is equal to or more than 50GB. On the other hand, if you configure a physical storage as a Dev Drive, you can change the size of the volume with any remaining space available. If you have to increase the size of the virtual drive, you will have to create another drive with a larger size.

      To change the side of a Dev Drive, use these steps:

      Open Settings.

      Choose the drive to resize.

      Quick note: If you’re configuring a hard drive, you can use the remaining space to increase the size of the drive. If you have a virtual drive, you can only change the size of the physical drive has more than 50GB of available space.

      Specify the new size of the drive (in megabytes).

      Once you complete the steps, the Dev Drive will now reflect the new size.

      Using these instructions, you can increase or decrease the size of the drive. However, if you’re dealing with virtualization, the size of the Dev Drive can’t be less than 50GB.

      Delete Dev Drive on Windows 11

      If you no longer have to use a Dev Drive, the best way to delete the drive is to use the “Disk Management” tool to detach the virtual drive, and then you can proceed to delete the “.vhd” or “.vhdx” file. If you are using a physical drive, you can simply delete or reformat the volume.

      To delete a Dev Drive on Windows 11, use these steps:

      Open Start.

      Open File Explorer.

      Open the folder storing the virtual drive.

      After you complete the steps, the Dev Drive will be removed from your Windows 11 device.

      How To See The Number Of Files In A Google Drive Folder

      When you want to see the number of files in a Google Drive folder, it’s not immediately obvious how to do so. There isn’t a count anywhere to be found.

      Using the workaround below, though, you’ll be able to find the number of files without any manual counting. These workarounds require no third-party apps or tools, and you can do it right from your browser.

      Drag But Do Not Drop Method

      Open the Google Drive folder to see the available files.

      Scroll all the way down until all of your files are loaded. If you do not do this, you will only get the count of the files that have been loaded.

      Open your desired Google Drive folder.

      Open the Google Drive folder and get to the end of the folder so that all the files load.

      You can format a hard drive or USB flash disk specifically so that it will be compatible with both Mac OS X and Windows PC computers.

      Making the Drive Bootable & Compatible with Older Windows PC using MBR

      If you wish to boot the drive on a PC, or to use it with older versions of Windows, you may also need to set the partition scheme to Master Boot Record (MBR) for full Windows compatibility. From within Disk Utility, do the following:

      From the “Partition Layout” dropdown menu, select “1 Partition”

      Drives format very quickly, though the total time taken will depend on the size of the drive.

      Using FAT File System Format for Mac & Windows Compatibility

      Once the drive is formatted it will be compatible to be read and written to on both a Mac and PC.

      Simply connecting the formatted drive to a Mac or PC will allow the drive to be used on either operating system, so you can access and transfer files as needed.

      The FAT file system is compatible with all versions of Mac OS X and macOS, Windows 95, 98, Windows XP, Vista, 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and later it’s one of the most widely recognized and usable file system formats. You’ll even be able to use the drive on most Linux and Unix machines too, if you need to.

      This widespread compatibility makes FAT an ideal file system to use for USB flash drives or external hard drives that are intended for use in environments with multiple operating systems.

      The primary downside to using FAT32 is the file size limit, which limits files on the drive to being 4GB in size or less. If you require single files to be larger than 4GB, use exFAT instead, though you will lose some compatibility with older versions of Mac OS X and Windows.

      Is NTFS Compatible with Mac?

      The NTFS file system is another option to use for Windows formatted drives and volumes, but it has limited compatibility with Mac OS by default.

      Mac users can mount and read NTFS formatted Windows drives, making NTFS compatible with the Mac on the reading and mounting front, but writing to an NTFS drive requires using either third party software or enabling NTFS write support on the Mac using an experimental functionality bundled on the Mac. This is less than ideal for most users however, so while NTFS is compatible with a Mac and Windows PC, if you want to do heavy file sharing between the two with a lot of reading and writing, you may be better off formatting a drive as FAT32 as discussed above.

      What about HFS Apple File System?

      HFS is the Mac file system. If you only intend on using the drive on a Mac it’s recommended to format for Mac OS X use only using the journaled file system. Just be aware that the Mac-only formats are typically not readable by Windows machines without some third party software on the PC.

      Is APFS Apple File System compatible with Windows PC?

      The APFS file system is built for modern Macs and MacOS versions, and is not compatible with Windows PC by default. There are some third party tools and apps that allow mounting and reading APFS drives on Windows, but support for APFS is not part of Windows by default. Therefore, if you’re looking for Mac and PC drive compatibility, you’ll want to format the disk as either FAT or NTFS.

      How to create a bootable macOS Big Sur USB install drive

      Step 1: Download macOS Big Sur. After Big Sur launches later this year, you’ll be able to download it directly from the Mac App Store. Until then, you can download the macOS Big Sur developer beta from Apple’s developer portal, or download the macOS Big Sur public beta via Apple’s public beta website.

      Step 2: After downloading macOS Big Sur, the installer will automatically launch. Close the installer.

      Step 4: Open Contents → Resources.

      Step 5: Launch a new Terminal window by going to Applications → Utilities → Terminal.
