What’s the ‘Status Unknown’ issue inside Microsoft Teams

The issue revolves around the presence status inside a user’s profile which indicates the member’s current availability and status to other members of the group or organization. Ideally, anyone in your organization will be able to see whether you’re online or not, in real-time.

A large number of users are now reporting that the Teams app now shows other users in an organization as ‘Status unknown’, even when those users are logged in and online. The problem persists even when users are actively engaged in a conversation.

Although users receive messages and calls in all presence states (barring Do not Disturb), the fact that their availability is unknown to others, meaning you cannot know for sure whether they’re online for work, unless you’re conversing with them. The problem appears to have originated in large numbers earlier last month and currently remains unsolved as is evident from this Teams UserVoice.

How can you fix it

At the moment, the only way to fix the ‘Status Unknown’ issue on Microsoft Teams is to change the Coexistence mode for your organization from ‘Islands’ to ‘Teams only’.

Note: In order to change this setting, you need to be the administrator for your organization on Microsoft Teams. In case, you’re not a Teams admin, you can request the admin to make the following changes to the organization to get user presence to work.

You can do so by following the steps below:

Step 1: Open Microsoft Teams admin center on your browser and sign in to your account.

Step 3: Inside the Teams upgrade page, open the drop-down menu adjacent to ‘Coexistence mode’ and select the ‘Teams only’ option.

Once you select this option, all users in your organization will be restricted to use only Teams for communication and collaboration.

What else can you do

In case your organization doesn’t favor switching to ‘Teams only’ mode, your only option is to wait for Microsoft to fix the issue. In response to a tweet, the company confirmed that the ‘Status Unknown’ issue is a “known problem” and its development team is currently working towards a fix.

Fix Microsoft Teams Crashes Or Freezes During Meetings

Shut Down Microsoft Teams.

Launch Task Manager and check the Teams related services running in the task manager. End all services and processes.

Press Windows + R to open the Run window.

Type %appdata% and press Enter.

Go to C:UsersUserNameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftTeams.

Delete only the files within the following folders: tmp folder, blob_storage, cache, GPUcache, databases, and local storage.

In the IndexedDB folder, only delete the .db file.

Close Microsoft Teams and then restart your computer.

3] Clear Windows credentials

Clearing the Teams’ account details from the credential manager may also fix the crash or freeze issue.

Check that your Microsoft Teams app is closed.

Press Windows + R to open the Run window.

Go to User Accounts in the Control Panel.

Go to Credential Manager.

Select the Windows Credentials

Expand the Microsoft Office Teams section and select Remove.

Close the Control Panel and restart Microsoft Teams.

Check if the crash issue is resolved.

4] Try accessing Teams from other devices/applications

If the Teams desktop application is not working, then try accessing it from other devices.

Web app

Go to Microsoft Teams web app.

Login with your account credentials.

Please note that the web app is similar to the desktop app, and you will receive almost the same functionality.

Mobile app

You can also install the Teams app from the App Store for iOS and the PlayStore for Android.

In case your work is not dependent on the desktop app, use the mobile app till the issue is resolved.

Restart the PC once the uninstallation is complete.

Launch it and you will see two major options. Report an issue, and Suggest a feature. You can use this to keep a tab on a popular issue, find issues that you have faced, and so on.

The Feedback HUB is so well done, that you do not need to go to any public forum to report issues and bugs. You can search for related issues in the hub, upvote it, and share your solution as well. Many a time a feature is requested so many times, that Microsoft has to think about it. They even make it into the next feature update or major upgrade.

It also includes Announcements from Microsoft for new features and major rollouts. You can also use this tool to send out diagnostic data from your computer to Microsoft. This tool will capture your actions on your computer which simulates that problem and then send it to Microsoft.

How To Blur The Background In Microsoft Teams Meeting

Video calling is a tricky business, especially when it’s a business meeting, and you need to attend the video call while in a public place. The problem is just not the noise, but what happens in the background. Things could get a little embarrassing in no time. If you use Microsoft Teams, then you can blur the background in the Microsoft Teams meeting. It is straightforward, but as of now, it is not available for Linux users.

To blur the background in Microsoft Teams meeting, do the following:

Start your meeting in Microsoft Teams or join a meeting

Select Blur my background, and you should have your blur background, or you can blur your background during a video call using CTRL+Shift+P combination

To start a meeting with background blur,  move the blur slider—the one to the right of the video slider—to the right on the Choose your audio and video settings screen when you’re joining the meeting

Microsoft is still working to make this feature available for all devices, as it may depend on the device capability as well. So if you don’t see it, don’t panic; it may take some time for them to enable support.

According to Microsoft, the feature to detect the person, and the background, works only on computers equipped with Advanced Vector Extension 2 (AVX2) graphics. AVX2 is what Teams use to blur the background after it figures out where the user is. If your computer has a post-Haswell chipset, then you will have the option. Microsoft also says that it will impact on your PC as it blurs in real-time, and puts some burden on the CPU as well.

TIP: You can now also use custom Backgrounds in Microsoft Teams.

I have been through forums, and the minimum hardware support seems dicey. Some reports from users with PC that supports AVX2 don’t have this option as well. I am guessing it’s going to a combination of hardware and software that is making a difference.

Here is a list of Hardware decoder and encoder driver recommendations for a list of unsupported decoders and encoders. You may have an unsupported decoder/encoder that is causing the problem.

Why can’t I blur my background in Microsoft Teams?

There could be multiple reasons why you can’t blur your background in Microsoft Teams. If you are using this app in an organization, the IT admin might have disabled this feature for the users like you. If you are going to allow users to schedule the webinar, you need to configure some policy settings before going further with the process. Webinars are often enabled in your tenant by default. But external people can register for the events or check out the engagement report, which is usually disabled.

A Webinar meeting provides absolute support to about 1000 attendees for enterprise customers and 300 attendees for M365 Business Premium Customers. If you have a meeting policy that specifies who in your company or organization will have access to creating webinars, make sure that person is there on the policy.

Follow the steps set policies to allow users to schedule webinars

One can easily allow your organization to use the Teams admin center. These policies are available in the Teams admin center.

Select the Global (Org-wide default) policy to view the current settings.

Then configure the policies according to your requirement.

2] Allow users to schedule webinars using PowerShell

If you are willing to allow users to schedule webinars using PowerShell, you can add up the given attributes within the Windows PowerShell, such as:




The things you have to follow up here strictly are:

Turn on the meeting registration on your device and the copy option.

Set-CsTeamsMeetingPolicy AllowMeetingRegistration $True

Once done with it, now turn on the private meeting schedule option by running the option:

Set-CsTeamsMeetingPolicy -AllowPrivateMeetingScheduling $True

The next thing you have to do is to configure who can register for the webinars. You can easily allow users from your organization only to register for these webinars. To enable the same, you can run the option:

Set-CsTeamsMeetingPolicy -WhoCanRegister EveryoneInCompany

In case you are willing to allow anyone, including anonymous users, to get registered for your webinar, you can run the option saying:

Set-CsTeamsMeetingPolicy -WhoCanRegister Everyone

While proceeding further with the process, ensure that you have turned on the anonymous users in your meeting settings.

How to control registration for Webinars?

Register yourself for a meeting: One can easily turn on the Meeting registration option to schedule the webinars successfully. This option is turned on by default usually. One needs to set the policy off to turn off the meeting registration.

Schedule Private Meeting: To schedule the Private meeting successfully, ensure it is on for meeting registration to work. This feature is usually turned on in the Teams admin center by default, whereas this feature is turned off for the students and education tenants.

Control Who can Register for a webinar: Microsoft Teams admin offers different facilities for selecting different types of users. Option Everyone offers all anonymous users the option to register for or attend the webinars. In case we turn off the meeting registration, it will automatically restrict further users from registering themselves for the webinar.

Engagement Report: Turning on the Engagement Report helps the meeting organizers to check reports on who, when, and from where have attended the webinar. The engagement report policy setting is turned on by default.

Who can schedule a Webinar in Teams?

Any meeting conductor or organizer can schedule a webinar in Microsoft Teams. However, if you use a Work or School edition of Teams, you might not be able to do so. In that case, your administrator or organization can only create and schedule a webinar in Teams.

How To Fix Wayland Gdm Issue In Fedora 22

Are you on Fedora 22 and puzzled by the fact that after you install you just can’t log in or do anything? Don’t worry! This is just a simple issue with Wayland (the next generation display server for Fedora).

Not everyone will encounter this issue inside GDM. This problem mostly appears with certain types of MacBooks. This problem isn’t just limited to MacBooks though. Other types of machines may run into this bug this as well.

If you do encounter a problem with the login screen, it can be quickly fixed. All that is required is a bit of poking around in a file. So how do you do it?

Enter TTY2 mode

Note: you may need to add nomodeset to your grub boot parameters to get to TTY2 mode.

Before Wayland can be disabled for GDM, you’ll need to open a shell. Since the desktop manager isn’t working, we’ll need to gain access to the command line to fix the issue. You can enter this mode (TTY2) by pressing “Ctrl + Alt + F2” on your keyboard.

Once you’ve pressed the right keyboard combination, you’ll see a message printed on the screen. This message will ask you for a username and password.

Enter your username and password, and then press the Enter key. Alternatively, you could use the root user and password. It really makes no difference.

With the user information entered, you will be dropped down to a basic command line terminal.

Disable Wayland for GDM

Gain root in the command line if you’ve decided to log in using your username.


From here we’ll need to open a text editor along with the file that needs to be edited. Use whatever terminal text editor you feel most comfortable with. For this guide we’ll be using Nano.









Only one thing needs to be changed in this file for GDM to start working again. In the file you’ve opened with Nano, find WaylandEnable=false.

After editing “custom.conf,” Wayland should be disabled. Just press “Ctrl + O” on your keyboard followed by pressing the Enter key to confirm and save the edits that you’ve made.

With the edits saved, exit nano and reboot the computer. By the next boot, the Wayland issue will be completely fixed in GDM, and you’ll be able to use Fedora 22.

This is usually a great thing as it allows Fedora fans the ability to try out new stuff before anyone else in the Linux community gets their hands on it.
