With iOS 15, Apple introduced a way to seamlessly move content between two apps without copying and pasting, dubbed the “Drag-and-Drop” feature. As good as this feature sounds, nothing is perfect in its initial stages.
As a result, the drag-and-drop feature may not work on your iPhone. Fortunately, there are a few solutions to this issue, and this guide will show different ways to fix the drag-and-drop feature not working on your iPhone.
What Is the Drag-and-Drop Feature on iPhone and How It Works
The Drag-and-Drop feature allows you to copy and paste files between two apps. It even works when you don’t have the option to copy or download the media.
All you need to do is hold and pick up media of your choice, like images, text, links, etc., keep holding the app while switching the app with another hand, and then release it on a supported field when the Plus (+) sign appears.
With iOS 16 and many third-party apps supporting it, you can use these features on almost all apps like Twitter, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and many others.
Fix Drag and Drop Not Working on iPhone
If drag and drop stops working on your iPhone, you need not worry. Try these troubleshooting tips to fix this problem on your iPhone:
1. Try Another Media File Instead
There are chances that the media you’re trying to drag and drop isn’t compatible, or the app isn’t allowing you to copy it. To figure out the problem, try copying a different media file from the app and see whether the issue persists.
For example, if you drag and drop a video in WhatsApp, it won’t work in such cases. However, if you try doing the same with an image or link, you’ll be able to drag and drop the file quickly. So make sure that you’re using the files supported by the app.
Not all apps support the drag-and-drop feature by default, even though it’s a native feature. So third-party app developers need to add support to their apps so that you can use the drag-and-drop feature. Consequently, it’s best to check for daily app updates as a habit. Here’s how you can check app updates for apps on your iPhone:
1. Open the App Store app on your iPhone.
2. Tap on your profile picture on the top right.
3. Swipe down from the top to check for new updates.
4. Select the Update All option to update all apps, or tap the Update button next to an app to update only individual app(s).
Once done, try dragging and dropping any supported file into the app and check whether it works.
3. Reinstall the App
If the above doesn’t work, try reinstalling the app on your iPhone. To do so, follow these steps:
1. Long press on the app icon and select Delete.
2. Tap Delete again when the confirmation pop-up appears.
3. Open App Store and search for the app you just deleted.
4. Tap the Install (Cloud with down arrow) icon next to the app, and hit Open once done.
Once reinstalled, try using the drag-and-drop feature on your iPhone and see if it works. If it doesn’t, proceed with the following troubleshooting methods.
4. Restart Your iPhone
If nothing works for you, restarting your iPhone is the best solution. You can restart an iPhone with Face ID by pressing and holding the side button + any volume button and then swiping on the slider that appears. Similarly, if you have an iPhone with Touch ID, you must press and hold the side button and then swipe on the slider when it appears.
In most cases, if drag and drop doesn’t work, it’s generally due to a bug. Apple is aware of these bugs and will fix them in subsequent updates. So, check for the latest iOS updates, if any are available on your iPhone.
6. Reset the Settings of Your iPhone
If nothing above works, your last resort is to reset the settings of your iPhone. However, you won’t need to reset and erase the data on your iPhone. Follow these simple instructions to reset all settings on your iPhone:
2. Scroll down and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
3. Select Reset and then Reset All Settings.
Once you reset all your iPhone’s settings, restart it and check whether the drag-and-drop feature is working.
Apple Support should be your next stop if you’ve tried everything and even installed new updates yet cannot use the drag-and-drop feature on your iPhone. Contact Apple’s customer care or visit any nearby Apple Store or authorized service center to get your iPhone repaired. It may take three to five days, depending on the problem and how they fix it.
Drag and Drop Should be Working Now
While iOS 15 brought many features, drag and drop was a hidden and unannounced feature. Besides, it’s one of the most useful features available on iOS, making it easy to move things around different apps by dragging and dropping.

Touch ID is the fastest way to unlock your device, give permission to digital content store purchases, and authenticate supported third-party app logins. But no one likes it when Touch ID problems arise. So if your experience has been a little flaky, we’ll take you through the steps to fix Touch ID problems on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Once you follow these solutions, you can again get back to using Touch ID for unlocking your device, authenticating Apple Pay, downloading apps, getting inside app locks, confirming password autofill, and more.
Potential causes for Touch ID issues
Touch ID will stop working when your finger is wet or dirty. This may happen while exercising, cooking, changing your oil, doing outside work, and other similar activities. Likewise, cuts, lotions, oils, sweat, and even dry skin can affect the accuracy of reading your fingerprint. So before you take any drastic measures, you should check for these issues.
When you’re sure that none of these reasons are affecting your Touch ID accuracy, then you probably have a problem, so continue reading to get to the bottom of things once and for all. But first, some basics.
Touch ID and Apple Pay
Are you trying to to use Apple Pay after authenticating with Touch ID, but it doesn’t work? If so, please go through these points:
You can use Touch ID on iPhone 6 and later for Apple Pay authentication in physical stores, within apps, and on supported websites in Safari.
You can use Touch ID for Apple Pay authentication on iPad Air 2 or later, iPad 5th generation or later, iPad mini 3 or later, and all models of iPad Pro within apps and on supported websites in Safari.
You can use Touch ID on MacBook or Magic Keyboard with Touch ID to make purchases via Apple Pay on supported websites inside Safari. If your Mac doesn’t have Touch ID, you can enter your password or complete the purchase using Touch ID (or Face ID) on your iPhone (and even your Apple Watch). Learn more.
Must see: Why Apple Pay gets disabled on your Mac in clamshell mode and with wireless Touch ID
When Touch ID won’t work (by design for your security)
If you restarted your device: For security, Touch ID and Face ID are disabled after you restart your iPhone or iPad. You must enter the passcode once, and then Touch ID will start working. On Mac, Touch ID won’t work the first time you restart, log in after turning on the computer, or log out as a user. To address this, enter your password manually once, and future login attempts will work via Touch ID.
You have not unlocked your iPhone, iPad, or Mac in more than 48 hours.
Your iPhone, iPad, or Mac fails to recognize the fingerprint five times in a row. In other words, if someone else or you with an unregistered finger try to use Touch ID five times, it’ll disable itself and only be fixed after you enter your password manually.
You just added a new fingerprint or deleted an existing one.
You just used Emergency SOS on your iPhone.
How to fix Touch ID problems on iPhone, iPad, and Mac
1. Clean the Touch ID sensor
Before you move further, use a soft dry microfiber cloth to wipe the Touch ID sensor, which will remove finger oils and residue.
2. Make sure your finger is dry
Let me remind you again that Touch ID won’t work with a wet finger. So, if you have moisture, sweat, or oils on your finger, wipe them off first.
3. Restart your device
Sometimes, the biggest problems can be fixed easily by simply turning off your device and turning it back on. If Touch ID fails to work due to temporary glitches, restarting should solve the inconvenience.
4. Make sure Touch ID is allowed to perform certain tasks
Even after adding your fingerprints to Touch ID, you can cripple its functionality by disabling where it can be used. Do the following to check and fix that:
Use Touch ID to unlock your Mac
Use Touch ID for Apple Pay
Use Touch ID for purchases in iTunes Store, App Store, and Apple Books
Use Touch ID for autofilling passwords
Use Touch ID for fast user switching
5. Recalibrate the Touch ID sensor
Sometimes the best thing to do is start all over and recalibrate the sensor. To do that, you’ll need to follow these simple steps:On iPhone and iPad
Open the Settings app and go to Touch ID & Passcode. Here, enter your device password to get inside.
Tap the added fingerprint and hit Delete Fingerprint. You may delete all added fingerprints.
Next, tap Add a Fingerprint to begin re-scanning and re-adding your fingerprints. Place your finger on the Touch ID sensor in various ways – right-side-up, up-side-down, and sideways until the fingerprint icon becomes fully colored. When asked to adjust your grip, scan the edges of that finger until the fingerprint icon becomes fully colored. Note: Scan the front, the back, and the sides of that finger in ways you think you will unlock your device in situations where your grip isn’t the best.
Tap Continue when the process is complete to save your fingerprint.
Lock your device and verify that the fingerprint works. If it does, congratulations! On Mac
Select Touch ID & Password from the left sidebar.
Take the pointer over an added fingerprint and hit the tiny cross (x) button that appears.
Once that’s done, lock your Mac and try to unlock it with your Touch ID. It should work flawlessly.
6. Register a different finger
If you still can’t use Touch ID, follow the above steps again and register another fingerprint. In rare cases, it’s possible that the finger you’re trying to use may not have a bold fingerprint.
Make sure to have the latest operating system version on your device, and it should fix the Touch ID problems.
8. Reset Mac’s SMC
SMC (System Management Controller) is responsible for low-level processes on your Mac, and resetting it should fix the current issues you’re troubled with:
If you have a Mac with an Intel processor, see our guide on resetting SMC.
If your Mac has Apple silicon, connect it to power and then restart it or shut down & power it again.
Related: How to determine whether your Mac is using an Intel processor or Apple silicon
9. Reset all iPhone or iPad settings
If Touch ID fails to function even after you have followed the above solutions, go ahead and reset all its settings. Performing this action won’t delete your data but will restore all settings to the default condition, which should fix the ongoing problems related to Touch ID.
10. DFU restore your iPhone or iPad
Use DFU mode on your iPhone, which will erase everything. So, make sure you have signed in to iCloud to back up your contacts, photos, messages, etc. Additionally, you can also back up your iPhone or iPad to iCloud or computer. Once DFU restore is complete, set up your iPhone as new or restore a pre-made backup.
11. Reinstall macOS (without losing data)
When basic troubleshooting tips fail, it’s time to reinstall macOS on your Mac to fix major issues. Once it completes, Touch ID failure should be a thing of the past.
12. Get your device inspected by Apple Support
At last, if nothing above helped you, the problem is most likely hardware-related.
Please chat with Apple Support and schedule an appointment at your nearest Apple Store. They will inspect your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and give you an appropriate solution.

Dictation lets you enter text using your voice instead of typing on the keyboard. It’s also known by other names like talk to text, voice to text, or speech to text. However, sometimes the dictation microphone icon may be missing on the keyboard or it may not convert what you speak into text.
If dictation isn’t working on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac, here are some reliable solutions to fix the problem.
Fix dictation not working
Connect to Wi-Fi or Cellular
You can use dictation offline on iPhone 6s and later. However, not all dictation languages work without being connected to the internet. So, for best results, make sure your iPhone or iPad is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
Plus, when you select a new dictation language (or immediately after setting up your iPhone), you will have to connect to Wi-Fi for support files to download.
Enable and disable Airplane Mode
Go to the iPhone or iPad settings app and enable Airplane Mode. After waiting for around 15 seconds, tap the same toggle to turn off Airplane Mode.
Force quit the app in question and reopen it
If dictation isn’t working in a particular app, force close and reopen it. After that, tap the microphone key on the iOS keyboard and try to use dictation. It should input what you speak.
Restart your iPhone
When dictation is not working on iPhone, or it comes and disappears from the screen, simply turn off your iPhone and turn it back on. It’s an important fix. So, make sure you don’t skip it.
Disable and re-enable dictation to refresh it
Follow these steps to turn off and turn on dictation which should ensure it starts working correctly. This particular step will help you verify if you had enabled dictation in the first place or not!
Open iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch Settings and tap General.
Wait for a few seconds and restart your iPhone.
Now, open the Apple Notes app, tap the microphone icon on your keyboard, and dictation should work like a charm.
Turn off extra dictation languages
If you’re bilingual or multilingual, you might have added more than one keyboard to your iPhone. After that, you’ll see a Dictation Languages option appear below the Enable Dictation toggle. Tap it and uncheck all the languages except one. Now, restart your iPhone and try using dictation. It should work as expected.
Once that’s done, you can check more dictation languages if you want to use them. In case doing so starts causing dictation problems again, update your iPhone.
Important: Make sure you select the right accent for the same language. For example, if I’m from India, for best results, I should select English (India) as my dictation language instead of English (US) or English (UK).
Dictation option missing in iPhone Settings?
If you don’t see the Enable Dictation option in the steps above, follow these two fixes:Add iOS keyboard
You will lose Apple’s dictation feature if you add just a third-party keyboard (like SwiftKey) and remove the built-in Apple keyboard. To see the Enable Dictation option in iPhone keyboard settings, do the following:
Choose a keyboard under Suggested Keyboards or Other iPhone Keyboards.
Now go back and you should see the Enable Dictation option. If not, restart your iPhone.
Note: Some third-party keyboard (like SwiftKey) may also offer their own dictation feature. You can use that while using the third-party keyboard.Unrestrict Siri & Dictation
Follow these steps to ensure dictation is not restricted:
Open iPhone or iPad Settings and tap Screen Time.
If it says, Turn On Screen Time, you can skip all the steps below. Else, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
If Content & Privacy Restrictions is disabled, you can skip the steps below. If it’s enabled, tap Allowed Apps.
Under Allowed Apps, make sure Siri & Dictation is enabled.
You should see the Enable Dictation option after adding the iOS keyboard and ensuring dictation isn’t restricted.
Try using dictation without AirPods or earphones
At times, you may not be able to use dictation at all, or it may function poorly with wired or wireless earphones. If it isn’t working at all, make sure your iPhone isn’t stuck in headphone mode.
Remove iOS keyboard and add it again
Here’s how you can remove the iPhone keyboard and re-add it to ensure dictation works:
Tap Add New Keyboard and select your desired iPhone keyboard. Now, open Notes or a similar app and use dictation. It should work well.
Turn off Siri and turn it back on
Siri and dictation are related. So, if dictation isn’t working after following the above solutions, turn Siri off and on.
Go to Settings and tap Siri & Search.
Turn off Listen for “Hey Siri” and Press Side (or Home) Button for Siri.
Restart your iPhone.
Enable Siri again by turning on the switches you turned off in step 2.
Clean iPhone’s microphone
If your iPhone’s microphone grills are dirty, it can cause blockage, which causes poor experience on calls, Siri, voice recordings, dictation, and other related things. To fix this, make sure you remove any iPhone case and use a cloth, dry brush, or toothpick to clean the microphone holes.
Important: If any external device (like earphones) is attached to your iPhone, disconnect it to ensure the on-device mic is used.
Reset network settings or all settings
In case the dictation problem continues, reset your iPhone’s network settings. This should help, and if it doesn’t, you can reset all settings. Here’s how to do both.
Finally, if nothing helps, contact Apple Support or take your iPhone to an Apple Store and get it inspected. If there are issues with the iPhone hardware, they will take care of it.
Fix dictation not working on Apple Watch
When dictation isn’t working on your Apple Watch, follow these basic fixes first:
Restart your Apple Watch
Make sure your watch is running the latest version of watchOS
Check for Siri and Dictation restriction on iPhone (mentioned above)
Clean the Apple Watch for a perfect microphone experience and remove any full body case or cover
Besides the above checks, follow these solutions to fix dictation not working on Apple Watch.
Make sure Apple Watch is connected to Wi-Fi, Cellular, or the iPhone
Your Apple Watch can connect to the internet via Wi-Fi, Cellular (on cellular models), or use the iPhone’s internet. We have explained more in this interesting post titled how to know whether your Apple Watch is connected to the internet or not. Dictation should work flawlessly once Apple Watch has internet connectivity.
Enable dictation on Apple Watch
Do you see “Dictation Disabled. You can enable dictation in Settings” on your Apple Watch? Here’s how to enable (or check) dictation on Apple Watch:
Open the Settings app on Apple Watch and tap General.
Toggle on Dictation and tap Enable Dictation to confirm. Now go back to the typing screen and tap the microphone icon to use dictation on your Apple Watch.
Make sure Apple Watch and iPhone language are the same
You can simply mirror your iPhone language to your Apple Watch or use different settings for your wrist. But choosing the latter may cause dictation problems on the Apple Watch. To fix this, follow these steps:
Open the Watch app on your paired iPhone and tap General.
Tap Language & Region.
Tap Mirror my iPhone.
After a minute, restart your iPhone and Apple Watch. Now, dictation should work flawlessly on your Apple Watch and let you type with your voice.
Unpair and repair your Apple Watch
Finally, if you’re still unable to use dictation on your Apple Watch, unpair it from your iPhone and pair it again.
Fix dictation not working on Mac
Here’s how to ensure dictation starts working on your Mac and lets you type without the physical keyboard.
Turn off Voice Control
Do you see “Keyboard Dictation is disabled when Voice Control is on” in the dictation preferences screen on Mac?
Follow these steps to turn off Voice Control which should stop the conflicting issues with dictation:
Select Voice Control from the left.
Uncheck Enable Voice Control.
Now, you should not see any error message in the dication settings on Mac.
Enable dictation on Mac
To enable dictation, do any of the following:
Restart your Mac
Connect your Mac to the internet
Additionally, your Mac must be connected to the internet to use dictation if:
Offline dictation file isn’t downloaded, or
The language you’re using dictation in isn’t supported for offline dictation.
Note: On a Mac with Apple silicon (M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, and their successors), some basic dictation requests like composing messages or notes are processed on the device without needing internet. Using dictation in the search box requires an active internet connection.
Use dictation in a quieter room
If you’re having patchy experience with dictation on Mac, use it in a room with less noise. This is especially help if you have an old Mac.
Tip: Dictation can listen to you continuously for about 30 to 40 seconds. After that, you must pause and let it process and type what you said before speaking again.
Turn dictation off and back on
Select the right microphone for dictation
While you’re on the dictation preferences screen, make sure the correct microphone is selected. Select Automatic if you often use AirPods or other audio devices with your Mac.
Quit the Mac app and retry using dictation
Disable and enable Siri on Mac
Delete Speech Recognition file
Finally, if nothing helps, follow these steps:
From Finder, press Command + Shift + G.
Delete this file from here.
Restart your Mac.
Now, try using dictation and it should work perfectly. If the problem continues, go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.SpeechRecognitionCore and delete the file (if you see it).

Drag and Drop Color Swatches in Photoshop
Learn how to drag and drop colors directly into your document with the improved Swatches panel in Photoshop CC 2023!
Written by Steve Patterson.
The Swatches panel in Photoshop CC 2023 has been greatly improved with a new and easy way to add colors to your document. We can now drag and drop colors from the Swatches panel directly onto a layer’s contents. And we can even add the color as a Solid Color fill layer or as a Color Overlay layer effect, again just by dragging and dropping it!
In this tutorial, we’ll look at the changes Adobe made to the Swatches panel in CC 2023, including the new default swatch sets and how to load legacy swatches from previous versions of Photoshop. And then I’ll show you all the ways to drag and drop colors into your document, including a few new keyboard tricks!
To follow along, you’ll need Photoshop 2023 or newer. If you’re already using Photoshop CC, make sure that your copy is up to date.
Let’s get started!The document setup
For this tutorial, I’ve created a simple document with a couple of flower shapes and some text in front of a white background. The shapes and the text are currently filled with black, but I’ll be adding color to them as we go along:
The initial Photoshop document.
In the Layers panel, we see how my document is set up. The Background layer on the bottom is filled with white. And above the Background layer are the two flower shapes. But the difference between them is that the flower on the left (on the “Flower pixels” layer) is a pixel layer, while the flower on the right (on the “Flower shape” layer) is a shape layer. And finally, the word “swatches” is on a type layer at the top.
In other words, we have four different kinds of layers in this document (a Background layer, a pixel layer, a shape layer, and a type layer). And as we’ll see, some layers behave differently than others when we drag and drop colors onto them from the Swatches panel:
The four different kinds of layers in the document.
See our complete guide to learning Photoshop layers!A closer look at the Swatches panel in Photoshop CC 2023
But before we start dragging and dropping colors, let’s look at how the Swatches panel itself has changed in Photoshop CC 2023.Where do I find the Swatches panel
By default, the Swatches panel is grouped in with the Color panel, along with the Gradients and Patterns panels which are both new in CC 2023:
If you’re not seeing the Swatches panel, you can open it by going up to the Window menu in the Menu Bar and choosing Swatches:The new default color swatch sets
The first thing you’ll notice with the Swatches panel in CC 2023 is that the default color swatches are now grouped into sets, and each set is represented by a folder. We have sets for RGB, CMYK and Grayscale colors, along with Light and Dark colors, Pure colors, Pastels, and more:
The new default swatch sets in CC 2023.How to open and close a swatch set How to open or close all swatch sets at once
Hold Ctrl (Win) / Command (Mac) to twirl all sets open or closed. How to change the size of the swatch thumbnails
And then choose Tiny, Small or Large Thumbnail. Or you can view the color swatches as a Small or Large List, which includes both the thumbnail and the name of each color:Your recently-used swatches
The row along the top of the Swatches panel lets you quickly choose from any of your recently-used swatches:
The recently-used color swatches.
And deselecting Show Recents. Select the same option again to turn the recent swatches back on:
The Show Recents option. How to load the legacy swatches from previous versions of Photoshop
And then choose Legacy Swatches:
Loading the Legacy Swatches sets.
The Legacy Swatches sets.
In the next tutorial, I’ll show you how to create your own custom swatches and swatch sets. But for now, let’s learn all the ways to drag and drop colors from the Swatches panel into your document. How to drag and drop colors from the Swatches panel
In Photoshop CC 2023, the easiest way to add colors from the Swatches panel is to simply drag and drop the color directly onto a layer’s contents. There’s no need to select the layer in the Layers panel first. As long as you drop the color onto the layer’s contents, Photoshop will automatically select the layer for you.
But exactly how the color is applied depends on which kind of layer it is. Let’s start with the Background layer.Dragging color swatches onto the Background layer
In my case, my Background layer is filled with white, so I’ll drag and drop a swatch onto any area of white:
Dragging and dropping a color swatch onto the Background layer’s contents.
Release your mouse button to apply the color to the background:
The result after dropping the color swatch onto the background. The color is applied as a Solid Color fill layer
But in the Layers panel, notice that the Background layer is not actually filled with the new color. Instead, the color is added as a Solid Color fill layer above the Background layer:
The Layers panel showing the new fill layer.Dragging color swatches onto pixel layers
So color swatches are applied to Background layers as Solid Color fill layers. And the same is true when dragging and dropping colors onto normal pixel layers, but with one important difference.
In my case, I’ll drop the color onto the flower on the left, which is on a pixel layer:
Dragging and dropping a color swatch onto a pixel layer’s content.
Release your mouse button to apply the color to the layer:
The result after dropping the swatch onto the pixel layer’s contents. The color is applied as a clipped fill layer
In the Layers panel, we again see that the color was added as a Solid Color fill layer above the pixel layer. But this time, the fill layer is clipped to the pixel layer below it.
Because the fill layer is clipped to the pixel layer using a clipping mask, the new color is affecting only that one layer. The Background layer is not affected:
The Layers panel showing the clipped fill layer.
Learn the difference between pixel shapes and vector shapes!Dragging color swatches onto shape layers and type layers
While Photoshop CC 2023 applies color swatches to Background layers and pixel layers as separate fill layers, that’s not the case when we drag and drop swatches onto shape layers or type layers. And since shape and type layers both behave the same way, we’ll look at them together.
I’ll drag and drop a color from the Swatches panel onto the flower on the right, which is on a shape layer:
Dragging and dropping a color swatch onto the shape layer’s contents.
And then I’ll drag and drop a different color onto the text:
Dragging and dropping a color swatch onto the type layer’s contents.
Learn how to choose text colors from images! The color is applied directly to shapes and text
Notice that this time in the Layers panel, a Solid Color fill layer does not appear above either the shape layer or the type layer. Instead, the color swatches were applied directly to the shape and to the text. The reason is that shape layers and type layers both support color fills, while Background layers and pixel layers do not.
The colors were applied directly to the shape and text.
Place images in shapes with the Frame Tool in Photoshop CCThe new Swatches panel keyboard tricks in Photoshop CC 2023
So far, we’ve seen the default ways that Photoshop applies colors to different kinds of layers when we drag and drop swatches from the Swatches panel. Colors are applied to Background layers as Solid Color fill layers. They’re applied to pixel layers as fill layers that are clipped to the pixel layer below them. And when we drag and drop a color onto a shape or type layer, the new color is applied directly to the layer itself.
But the Swatches panel in Photoshop CC 2023 also includes a few keyboard shortcuts that let you change the way colors are applied. So let’s finish this tutorial with a quick look at how to use them. How to apply swatches to shapes or text as fill layers
To apply a color swatch to a shape or type layer as a Solid Color fill layer, press and hold the Ctrl (Win) / Command (Mac) key on your keyboard as you drag and drop the color from the Swatches panel onto the layer’s contents.
Here I’m holding Ctrl (Win) / Command (Mac) as I drag a swatch onto the shape layer:
Holding Ctrl (Win) / Command (Mac) and dragging a color swatch.
And this time, the original color of the shape remains intact while the new color appears as a clipped Solid Color fill layer above it. Again, this same trick also works with type layers:
The swatch is added to the shape as a clipped fill layer. How to apply colors as non-clipped fill layers
To apply a color swatch above a pixel, shape or type layer as a Solid Color fill layer that is not clipped to the layer below it, hold Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) as you drag the color onto the layer’s contents.
Here I’m holding Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) as I drag a swatch onto the text:
Holding Alt (Win) / Alt (Mac) and dragging a color swatch.
Photoshop adds the color as a Solid Color fill layer above the type layer. But because the fill layer is not clipped to the type layer, it’s blocking all of the layers below it from view. This is probably not a trick you’ll use very often, but it’s there if you need it:
A non-clipped fill layer blocks all layers below it from view. How to create a clipping mask manually
And choose Create Clipping Mask:
Choosing the Create Clipping Mask command.
And now with the fill layer clipped to the type layer, the new color is applied only to the text:

And finally, to apply a color swatch to a pixel, shape or type layer as a Color Overlay layer effect, hold Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Command+Option (Mac) as you drag and drop the color.
Here I’m holding Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Command+Option (Mac) as I drag a color onto the pixel layer’s contents:
Holding Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Command+Option (Mac) and dragging a color swatch.
I’ll release my mouse button to drop the color onto the layer:
The pixel layer updates with the new color.
And in the Layers panel, the new color appears as a Color Overlay layer effect below the layer. The only layer that this trick will not work with is the Background layer, since Background layers do not support layer effects:
The color swatch is added as a Color Overlay effect.

Weebly upgraded the platform to fourth generation and named it as Weebly 4 on September 2023. One of the features of Weebly 4 is flexible drag and drop header. We have published a trick on how to drag and drop elements in header area and Weebly made this as a default feature now.Can Everyone Use Flexible Header?
The good news is the feature is available for all Weebly plan users including free users. But the bad news is that flexible header is available only on default responsive Weebly themes and can’t be used in the following themes:
If you have modified and saved the theme as custom theme.
You are using a theme bought from third party vendor.
You are using one of the old non-responsive Weebly themes.
In a nutshell Weebly drives the platform to make use of default themes and developers can use App Center to sell items (although themes are not sold as of now this article is written). With the introduction of “Section” element which can also only be used on default responsive themes, external third party developers will have tough time to sell their themes without default functions.
If you are already using custom theme, read out our article on creating drag and drop header.Features of Flexible Header
Below are the features of flexible header:
Dragging and dropping the pointer can adjust height of the header area. This eliminates the need of using different header types for different pages as you can drag and adjust the height as per your need on individual pages. Hence all previous header types were consolidated into header, no-header and splash page layouts.
Apply the header changes to all the pages or only to the selected pages on your site.
Edit the background image or select from one of the available layouts.
Drag and drop any elements on the header area like social icons, buttons, text, etc.
Create the header with background image or plain color. Pro, business and performance plan users can add video backgrounds to the drag and drop header.
Easily create parallax effect or reveal effect to the header. How to Use Flexible Drag and Drop Header in Weebly?
As mentioned above, flexible header is available only for default responsive Weebly themes. Hence, if you are using modified custom theme change to one of the latest theme. Note you will loose all custom changes when changing to the default theme. The best way is to create a new site and test whether it is useful for your need.
Once you are in the site editor check the page has default image. Or else go to “Pages” menu and choose the header type as “Header” to enable the header section on your page. Now you can drag and drop any elements on the header area similar to the content area.
