The smart speaker market has plenty of great options, but the Amazon Echo with Alexa has a useful option the others haven’t rolled out yet. When you use Alexa, you have the possibility of creating your own skills with absolutely no coding required!

What are Alexa Blueprints?

Alexa Blueprints is a new method for customizing your Alexa experience. Simply put, Blueprints are templates to create skills of your own to be used in your home without coding. It’s as easy as filling in the blanks.

When you make a skill, the default setting makes the skill available in only your account. However, you can share the skill with friends and family if you want.

What can you do with Alexa Blueprints?

There are five different categories of Skills Blueprints: Greetings & Occasions, Fun & Games, Learning & Knowledge, At Home, and Storyteller.

In the Greetings & Occasions category, you will find what amounts to a list of greeting cards you can send to someone for their birthday or other events.

Fun & Games contains blueprints for general trivia games and birthday trivia for parties to see who knows the birthday boy or girl the best. There’s also a game show blueprint and a blueprint to create an inspirational quote generator.

For those of you with kids in school or going back to school yourself, the Learning & Knowledge category has tools to help! Just create a skill using the Flashcards or Quizzes blueprints to aid you in your studying.

The At Home category has useful templates to create skills for your house guests, babysitters, or petsitters. You can create your own custom question and answer skill and even create a chore chart.

Time for a bedtime story? Templates in the storyteller section include ones for fairy tales, sci-fi, and fables.

How do you use Alexa Blueprints?

So where do you go to create these blueprints? Follow these instructions, and you’ll have your first skill done in less time than you can imagine.

2. Log in to your Amazon account that you use for your Alexa.

4. Pick your template from more than twenty options. Check out Featured blueprints for inspiration.

7. Name your skill.

8. Hit “Create Skill.”

9. Wait a few minutes. There will be a notification when it is ready to use.

10. Test it by asking Alexa to open it: “Alexa, open (skill name).”

11. If you need to, edit it in “Skills You’ve Made” at the top of the Alexa Blueprints page.

Proper names can be tough for Alexa to understand, so you want to avoid specific family names in your titles and stay more generic with your names. She can understand common special characters like question marks and dashes. If you use a symbol that she can’t understand, you will receive an error message.

Share your Blueprints

You can share an Alexa skill with your family and friends, but just remember, if you share it with them, they will be able to share it too. Take that into consideration before sending it out to the masses. Don’t worry, though. You are the only one who will be able to edit the skill.

A Practical Example Of Using Infusionsoft To Create Email Sequences

I’ve been a heavy user of MailChimp for many years. And as a tutor and examiner for the CIM’s digital qualifications I can see that I am not alone. The majority of my students seem to have experience of the platform and only the very larger brands seem to regularly be using anything else like a fully integrated CRM system for email.

MailChimp has some awesome features. And for companies with small mailing lists and limited resources or technical expertise, it’s an excellent first choice for regular emailing.

But it has some severe limitations. You can’t really do much personalisation. Sure you can put a first name in and you can use Autoresponders to send specific emails in response to a trigger but they are complex to set up and lack the sophistication of a more specialised marketing automation system.

I’d been researching alternatives for several years acutely aware that my “spray and pray” approach to email marketing was far from optimal and again it appears that I am not alone. Return Path found that 60% of companies fail to send welcome emails to new subscribers and 30% fail to email for more than a month after sign-up. 58% of retailers send the same first promotional email to buyers & non-buyers alike, squandering the opportunity to personalise or adapt that all-important first message based on purchase history or demographic data.

It’s no wonder that we are feeling deluged with irrelevant spam when top online retailers send each of their subscribers more than three promotional emails per week (Responsys 2011).

And yet more than half of US email users had made a purchase due to permission-based email. Crucially for intelligent email systems half said that a company’s handling of email affects their decision to do business with them online or offline (Merkyl 2008).

But all the time I dragged my heels I was frustrating subscribers with irrelevant content, and crucially not really making the most of the archive of content I had built up over the years on the website. Unless you dug very deep, it was simply not very likely that your somewhat specialised interest in mic systems for large groups of singers would crop up on visiting our website.

I was also wasting my own time in not creating sequences of emails for new subscribers, new customers or people who had enquired about a particular product range. What I needed was an affordable technical solution which worked for me while I got on with more interesting things.

Enter Infusionsoft

I’d seen Infusionsoft around for a number of years and was impressed by it’s positioning as the leading (only?) email marketing and marketing automation system for small businesses. I’d seen a number of organisations that I admired adopt it (Facebook guru Jon Loomer being one). And crucially, I ran into a reseller and Infusion Soft developer that I trusted to hand hold me through the process of learning the system and also to handle all my legacy data issues from multiple webstores and databases.

1. Segmenting my list: “Tagging” subscribers

I’ve a pretty substantial, organically grown, mailing list for my company Musicademy but, as is typical with many small businesses, very little ecrm data to accompany it. If I had a first name to go with the email address I was doing well, let alone knowing what the customer was actually interested in from our somewhat diverse product range.

So the first step was to reach out to our existing list and have them identify their interest areas. By completing the form below users were given 40 free music lessons – a great incentive. And behind the scenes, any tick besides the instruments of interest triggers an email sequence full of great content (and a little info about products).

As well as the self-tagging mechanic, I had a developer write a programme to synchronise my (Magento) webstore purchase history so that within Infusion Soft I was beginning to develop a database of customers, email addresses, interests and purchase history. Each purchase was tagged to again help with the interest segmentation.

2. Creating the email sequences

Once someone is tagged, for instance with an interest in guitar playing, Infusionsoft was then tasked with the job of providing timely and relevant content on guitars and guitar playing. In true content marketing style these emails focussed on quality free content which earned the right to also talk about the product range (well actually, we’ve mainly let customer reviews talk about the product range). An example is below.

I’ve set these emails up to send once per week and there are about 6-8 in the sequence. The beauty for me as a content marketer is that each of the links goes to content on the website that we’ve created over the years. Apart from writing the emails, I didn’t have to create any new content. I was simply pointing people at great content, that had already been well received, that was sitting unseen (apart from by diligent googlers) on the website.

It’s early days yet but we are definitely seeing conversions (purchases) as a result of these emails and chatting with recipients about it on Facebook has yielded glowing praise for the approach.

The unsubscribe button at the top gives them the option of unsubscribing from just this sequence or everything.

What place the regular newsletter?

We still use this. And it goes to everyone on the list. This seems to work well for our audience who, despite an interest in particular instruments, enjoys the wider variety of content that we create and curate each week. And of course that content will, in time, find it’s way into our email sequences.

So what does Infusionsoft look like under the hood?

One of the things I love about Infusionsoft is it’s logical, visual presentation. Below is a simple sequence I’ve built for people tagged as interested in Sound Tech.

Below you see the results of my “Sign up for 40 free lessons” campaign. The 1887 shows the number of people who have double opted in The numbers in blue show those who have completed the sequence. The other orange numbers show those currently in a sequence.

This somewhat scary looking graphic is actually really clever. I was concerned that many people would tick multiple instruments and quickly become overwhelmed with an onslaught of emails. So the green triangles (called decision nodes) enable a delay until the previous sequence is completed.

I hope you’ve found that an interesting case study in how I am using an automated email marketing system to repurpose my content archive and increase conversion rates. Needless to say, other email marketing systems exist. And Infusionsoft has way more capability than I have shown in this example. The platform began life in the US but it has a number of UK-based resellers as well as developers and consultants on hand to help you get to grips with it. To be honest, if I managed it, I think most marketers wouldn’t have much trouble!

You need the Alexa app for Android or iOS to set up any of the Amazon Echo speakers, but once you’ve got your Echo in place, you might not give much thought to the program on your phone—not when you can do so much with voice commands aimed at your smart speaker.

If you’re ignoring the app, though, you’re missing out. It’s much more than just a setup utility for the Echo speakers, and it just got a major overhaul that means it’s more intuitive to use than ever.

Get to know the home screen

Open up the Alexa app and tap Home to get to the home screen (if you’re not already on it). This displays a useful overview of the help you’re getting from Alexa: you’ll see upcoming reminders, lists that you’ve edited recently, and speaker skills that you might want to try (from making a call to controlling your smart home).

Right at the top is the Alexa button—just tap this (or say “Alexa”) to give the digital assistant a voice command. If you’re not sure of the best way to use Alexa, try tapping Browse skills or Browse things to try further down the home screen to see some of the tricks Alexa is capable of.

View reminders and lists

If you’ve set up a lot of reminders and lengthy lists through Alexa, it’s easier to browse through them on a screen than it is to hear them read out to you. Using the app can also be the better option if you’ve got some complicated reminders to set up or notes to add that Alexa might not understand if you were using your voice.

You can view your connected smart home devices in the Alexa app by tapping Devices.

The subsequent screen will let you turn smart lights and smart plugs on and off, adjust the temperature of your smart thermostat, check the status of your smart smoke alarm, and get at any other device you’ve set up. To add new devices to your Alexa ecosystem, tap the plus button in the top right corner.

To access more detailed settings for a particular device (the brightness of a smart bulb, for example), tap on the device category and then the device itself. Where devices are grouped together—say all the smart lights on a particular floor—you can turn them on and off with a single tap.

Set up Alexa routines

Routines are one of the most useful features Alexa offers, basically combining several tasks that are triggered by one command. You might say “good morning” to Alexa, for example, to have your heating turn on, your smart lights turn off, and your morning playlist start blasting through an Echo.

To configure routines for Alexa inside the mobile app, tap More, then Routines. You can edit existing routines by tapping on them, or create a new one via the plus button in the top right corner. You’ll need to give each routine a name, a command to trigger it, and a list of actions that happen as a result.

If you’re stuck for inspiration, open up the Featured tab to see some of Amazon’s suggested example routines—like one that will give you the weather forecast as soon as your morning alarm has finished. The more you play around with the options, the more ideas you’ll get for ways to simplify your life.

Manage music and audiobooks

The Play icon in the center of the Alexa navigation app is helpful if you’re using an Echo speaker to play music or audiobooks. Tap on it to pause and restart playback, skip forward or backward in the current playlist, and adjust the volume without having to shout voice commands at your smart speaker (which can be more convenient, especially if you’re in a different room).

Even better, the Play screen shows you what you’ve been listening to recently, whether that’s your music library, online radio stations, or audiobooks (exactly which options you’ll see will depend on the different services you’ve connected to Alexa). You can dive directly back into something right from the app.

To check what services you’ve got hooked up to Alexa, go to More, then Settings—you’ll see entries for Music, TV & Video, Flashing Briefing, Photos, and several others. In some cases, you can set default services that launch in response to voice commands when you don’t specify a particular service (such as Spotify or Apple Music).

You can simply copy the rows or ask ChatGPT will to go a step further, Nick explains: You can copy & paste any row into Midjourney and it’ll work great. Or, you can send a follow-up request and ask: “Please write each row as a comma-separated sentence. Append each sentence with –ar 16:9”

There you go, infinite images with a good Additive Prompt structure and ChatGPT hack. If you want new data, just ask for “10 more rows of data” Now that you have a strong foundation to build off, you can tweak and edit the outputs to whatever you’d like.
