Is your Apple TV Remote malfunctioning, lost, or damaged? You don’t have to spend over $50 on a new remote when you can control your Apple TV from an iPhone, iPad, iPod, or Mac. These Apple devices ship built-in remotes that control your Apple TV, just like the physical remote.

You can also use third-party apps to navigate an Apple TV without the remote. This tutorial covers all available techniques, apps, and tools to control Apple TV from an iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Control Apple TV From an iPhone or iPad

The Apple TV Remote is automatically added to your iPhone or iPad’s Control Center when setting up your Apple TV with your device. It’s also added when entering text with the Apple TV keyboard on your TV screen.

Nonetheless, you can manually add the Apple TV Remote to the Control Center without updating your device.

Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

Select Control Center, and scroll to the “More Controls” section.

Tap the plus (+) icon next to Apple TV Remote.

Open your device’s Control Center and tap the remote icon to launch the Apple TV Remote interface.

If you have multiple Apple TVs linked to your Apple ID, tap the arrow-up icon at the top of the screen and select the Apple TV you want to control.

Understanding the Apple TV Remote Interface on iPhone and iPad

Swipe the Touch Area to move between apps and items. To select an item, tap anywhere within the Touch Area.

Note that additional controls will pop up within the Touch Area when playing content on certain apps. For example, when watching a movie on Netflix, the “Skip Back” and “Skip Forward” buttons appear on the remote interface. Tap either of the buttons to skip playback backward or forward by 10 seconds, respectively.

The functions of other buttons are self-explanatory.

The microphone button activates Siri and lets you search and control your Apple TV via your iPhone or iPad voice commands.

Tap the button with a TV icon to go to the Apple TV Home screen.

Press the TV button twice to open the Apple TV app-switching view and hold the same button to access the Apple TV Control Center.

The Play/Pause button in the bottom-left corner pauses and resumes media playback.

The Menu button is multi-functional: Tap it once to return to the previous screen, or hold the button to open the Home screen. Tap the Menu button while on the Home screen to activate your Apple TV screensaver.

Tap the Search button in the bottom-right corner to launch the Apple TV Search app. The Search button changes to a Keyboard icon afterward.

Tap the Keyboard button to type your search query using the iOS or iPadOS keyboard.

Control Apple TV From Mac

Mac notebooks and desktops don’t have an Apple TV Remote, per se. All you can do from your Mac is to pause or resume media playback. You cannot search for TV shows, activate the Apple TV screensaver, perform voice searches, or navigate apps.

Follow the steps below to link and control Apple TV from your Mac. Before proceeding, confirm that your devices (i.e., Mac and Apple TV) use the same iCloud account.

Open your Mac’s System Preferences, select Apple ID, and check if the iCloud or Apple ID email corresponds with the address on your Apple TV.

Launch the Home app on your Mac.

You’ll need to grant the Home app access to your iCloud Keychain if it’s your first time launching the app. Then, select Turn On iCloud Keychain to proceed.

    Check the Keychain box.

      Select Continue.

Enter your Apple ID password and select Next to proceed.

Enter your Mac admin password and select OK.

Return to the Home app and select Turn on iCloud Keychain again.

Enter your iPhone or iPad’s passcode and wait for the Home app to load all accessories connected to your Apple ID.

                Select Continue.

If your Apple ID and Apple TV are linked, you should see a pop-up message prompting you to add yourself to Apple TV. Select Add Me to Apple TV to continue.

Your Apple TV should now appear in the “Home” or “Rooms” tab on the sidebar.

You can only control media playback on your Apple TV from the Mac Home app. Select the Apple TV to play or pause media playback.

The Apple TV status will switch from “Playing” to “Pause” (and vice versa) when you pause or resume media playback.

Control Apple TV on Mac Using Third-Party Apps

There are third-party apps that offer more extensive control options than the Home app. Ezzi Keyboard, for example, has navigation controls and keyboard support—you can enter search queries on your Apple TV using your Mac’s keyboard. But it’s a paid app ($0.99).

CiderTV, on the other hand, is entirely free to use but lacks support for keyboard input. You can only use the app to navigate and select apps and items. It’s Bluetooth-powered and easy to set up and use to control Apple TV from your Mac.

Install CiderTV from the Mac App Store and launch the app.

Select Add on the sidebar to link the app to your Apple TV.

Select Open Bluetooth Preferences, turn on your Mac’s Bluetooth, and keep the Bluetooth preferences window open.

If your Mac doesn’t show up, turn off your Mac’s Bluetooth and turn it back on. Remember to keep the Bluetooth preferences window open during the pairing process.

Your Mac should display a connection request from your Apple TV. Select Connect to pair your Mac to the Apple TV.

Return to the CiderTV app and use the navigation controls to control your Apple TV.

Tap the arrow icons to navigate your Apple TV and tap OK to select apps or items. The Menu button will take you back to the previous screen or Home screen.

CiderTV should suffice for navigating your Apple TV. But if you often search for TV shows and apps, or simply fancy keyboard input, the Ezzi Keyboard app is worth the $0.99 investment.

                        Navigate Apple TV Remotely

From experience, the iOS and iPadOS Remote work best when all devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. For example, we tried controlling an Apple TV on a Wi-Fi connection from an iPhone using a cellular connection. The iPhone remote worked on the first connection but stopped detecting the Apple TV after some minutes.

How To Fix Dictation Not Working On Iphone, Ipad, Apple Watch, And Mac

Dictation lets you enter text using your voice instead of typing on the keyboard. It’s also known by other names like talk to text, voice to text, or speech to text. However, sometimes the dictation microphone icon may be missing on the keyboard or it may not convert what you speak into text.

If dictation isn’t working on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac, here are some reliable solutions to fix the problem.

                        Fix dictation not working

                        Connect to Wi-Fi or Cellular

You can use dictation offline on iPhone 6s and later. However, not all dictation languages work without being connected to the internet. So, for best results, make sure your iPhone or iPad is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data.

Plus, when you select a new dictation language (or immediately after setting up your iPhone), you will have to connect to Wi-Fi for support files to download.

                        Enable and disable Airplane Mode

Go to the iPhone or iPad settings app and enable Airplane Mode. After waiting for around 15 seconds, tap the same toggle to turn off Airplane Mode.

Force quit the app in question and reopen it

If dictation isn’t working in a particular app, force close and reopen it. After that, tap the microphone key on the iOS keyboard and try to use dictation. It should input what you speak.

                        Restart your iPhone

When dictation is not working on iPhone, or it comes and disappears from the screen, simply turn off your iPhone and turn it back on. It’s an important fix. So, make sure you don’t skip it.

Disable and re-enable dictation to refresh it

Follow these steps to turn off and turn on dictation which should ensure it starts working correctly. This particular step will help you verify if you had enabled dictation in the first place or not!

Open iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch Settings and tap General.

                        Tap Keyboard.

Wait for a few seconds and restart your iPhone.

Now, open the Apple Notes app, tap the microphone icon on your keyboard, and dictation should work like a charm.

                        Turn off extra dictation languages

If you’re bilingual or multilingual, you might have added more than one keyboard to your iPhone. After that, you’ll see a Dictation Languages option appear below the Enable Dictation toggle. Tap it and uncheck all the languages except one. Now, restart your iPhone and try using dictation. It should work as expected.

Once that’s done, you can check more dictation languages if you want to use them. In case doing so starts causing dictation problems again, update your iPhone.

Important: Make sure you select the right accent for the same language. For example, if I’m from India, for best results, I should select English (India) as my dictation language instead of English (US) or English (UK).

Dictation option missing in iPhone Settings?

If you don’t see the Enable Dictation option in the steps above, follow these two fixes:

                        Add iOS keyboard

You will lose Apple’s dictation feature if you add just a third-party keyboard (like SwiftKey) and remove the built-in Apple keyboard. To see the Enable Dictation option in iPhone keyboard settings, do the following:

Choose a keyboard under Suggested Keyboards or Other iPhone Keyboards.

Now go back and you should see the Enable Dictation option. If not, restart your iPhone.

Note: Some third-party keyboard (like SwiftKey) may also offer their own dictation feature. You can use that while using the third-party keyboard.

                        Unrestrict Siri & Dictation

Follow these steps to ensure dictation is not restricted:

Open iPhone or iPad Settings and tap Screen Time.

If it says, Turn On Screen Time, you can skip all the steps below. Else, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.

If Content & Privacy Restrictions is disabled, you can skip the steps below. If it’s enabled, tap Allowed Apps.

Under Allowed Apps, make sure Siri & Dictation is enabled.

You should see the Enable Dictation option after adding the iOS keyboard and ensuring dictation isn’t restricted.

Try using dictation without AirPods or earphones

At times, you may not be able to use dictation at all, or it may function poorly with wired or wireless earphones. If it isn’t working at all, make sure your iPhone isn’t stuck in headphone mode.

Remove iOS keyboard and add it again

Here’s how you can remove the iPhone keyboard and re-add it to ensure dictation works:

Tap Add New Keyboard and select your desired iPhone keyboard. Now, open Notes or a similar app and use dictation. It should work well.

Turn off Siri and turn it back on

Siri and dictation are related. So, if dictation isn’t working after following the above solutions, turn Siri off and on.

Go to Settings and tap Siri & Search.

Turn off Listen for “Hey Siri” and Press Side (or Home) Button for Siri.

                        Restart your iPhone.

Enable Siri again by turning on the switches you turned off in step 2.

                        Clean iPhone’s microphone

If your iPhone’s microphone grills are dirty, it can cause blockage, which causes poor experience on calls, Siri, voice recordings, dictation, and other related things. To fix this, make sure you remove any iPhone case and use a cloth, dry brush, or toothpick to clean the microphone holes.

Important: If any external device (like earphones) is attached to your iPhone, disconnect it to ensure the on-device mic is used.

Reset network settings or all settings

In case the dictation problem continues, reset your iPhone’s network settings. This should help, and if it doesn’t, you can reset all settings. Here’s how to do both.

Finally, if nothing helps, contact Apple Support or take your iPhone to an Apple Store and get it inspected. If there are issues with the iPhone hardware, they will take care of it.

Fix dictation not working on Apple Watch

When dictation isn’t working on your Apple Watch, follow these basic fixes first:

                        Restart your Apple Watch

Make sure your watch is running the latest version of watchOS

Check for Siri and Dictation restriction on iPhone (mentioned above)

Clean the Apple Watch for a perfect microphone experience and remove any full body case or cover

Besides the above checks, follow these solutions to fix dictation not working on Apple Watch.

Make sure Apple Watch is connected to Wi-Fi, Cellular, or the iPhone

Your Apple Watch can connect to the internet via Wi-Fi, Cellular (on cellular models), or use the iPhone’s internet. We have explained more in this interesting post titled how to know whether your Apple Watch is connected to the internet or not. Dictation should work flawlessly once Apple Watch has internet connectivity.

                        Enable dictation on Apple Watch

Do you see “Dictation Disabled. You can enable dictation in Settings” on your Apple Watch? Here’s how to enable (or check) dictation on Apple Watch:

Open the Settings app on Apple Watch and tap General.

                        Tap Dictation.

Toggle on Dictation and tap Enable Dictation to confirm. Now go back to the typing screen and tap the microphone icon to use dictation on your Apple Watch.

Make sure Apple Watch and iPhone language are the same

You can simply mirror your iPhone language to your Apple Watch or use different settings for your wrist. But choosing the latter may cause dictation problems on the Apple Watch. To fix this, follow these steps:

Open the Watch app on your paired iPhone and tap General.

                        Tap Language & Region.

                        Tap Mirror my iPhone.

After a minute, restart your iPhone and Apple Watch. Now, dictation should work flawlessly on your Apple Watch and let you type with your voice.

Unpair and repair your Apple Watch

Finally, if you’re still unable to use dictation on your Apple Watch, unpair it from your iPhone and pair it again.

Fix dictation not working on Mac

Here’s how to ensure dictation starts working on your Mac and lets you type without the physical keyboard.

                        Turn off Voice Control

Do you see “Keyboard Dictation is disabled when Voice Control is on” in the dictation preferences screen on Mac?

Follow these steps to turn off Voice Control which should stop the conflicting issues with dictation:

Select Voice Control from the left.

                        Uncheck Enable Voice Control.

Now, you should not see any error message in the dication settings on Mac.

                        Enable dictation on Mac

To enable dictation, do any of the following:

                        Restart your Mac

Connect your Mac to the internet

Additionally, your Mac must be connected to the internet to use dictation if:

Offline dictation file isn’t downloaded, or

The language you’re using dictation in isn’t supported for offline dictation.

Note: On a Mac with Apple silicon (M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, and their successors), some basic dictation requests like composing messages or notes are processed on the device without needing internet. Using dictation in the search box requires an active internet connection.

Use dictation in a quieter room

If you’re having patchy experience with dictation on Mac, use it in a room with less noise. This is especially help if you have an old Mac.

Tip: Dictation can listen to you continuously for about 30 to 40 seconds. After that, you must pause and let it process and type what you said before speaking again.

Turn dictation off and back on

Select the right microphone for dictation

While you’re on the dictation preferences screen, make sure the correct microphone is selected. Select Automatic if you often use AirPods or other audio devices with your Mac.

Quit the Mac app and retry using dictation

Disable and enable Siri on Mac

                        Delete Speech Recognition file

Finally, if nothing helps, follow these steps:

From Finder, press Command + Shift + G.

                        Delete this file from here.

                        Restart your Mac.

Now, try using dictation and it should work perfectly. If the problem continues, go to  ~/Library/Caches/ and delete the file (if you see it).

How To Airdrop From Iphone To Mac

AirDrop is the fastest and most convenient way to wirelessly send files from an iPhone or iPad to a Mac. While AirDropping from iOS to Mac OS is easy, how it works may not be particularly obvious to some users, and many people don’t know the feature exists at all. Learning to use AirDrop to send files from an iPhone to a Mac is easy, and it offers a simple and reliable way to transfer photos, videos, notes, and other files between nearby devices.

To use AirDrop from iOS to Mac OS, you will need a modern version of iOS on the iPhone or iPad, and a modern version of Mac OS on the Mac – generally speaking the newer the software releases the better, so you’ll want to be sure you update your devices if you are having any difficulty. Beyond that it’s not much different from AirDropping between Macs or other iOS devices, let’s review how this great feature works to send files across platforms.

How to AirDrop from iPhone or iPad to a Mac

In this example, we’ll AirDrop files from an iPhone to a Mac via the Photos app, but you can access AirDrop in iOS from just about anywhere the “Sharing” menu is available. Here’s how this works:

On the iPhone from what you want to AirDrop, tap the Sharing icon (it looks like a little box with an arrow flying out of it), in the example here we are AirDropping photos from iPhone to a Mac

Now from the Mac, open a Finder window and choose “AirDrop” from the sidebar (or alternatively, pull down the “Go” menu and choose ‘AirDrop’)

On the Mac, check the ‘Allow me to be discovered by:’ section so that it says either “Everyone” or “Contacts Only”, keep this Finder window open as it enables AirDrop

Back on the iPhone at the sharing screen, tap on the AirDrop icon

On the iPhone, wait a moment and the Mac with AirDrop enabled will appear in the list, then tap on that Mac / user ID to immediately start sending the files / photos to the Mac

The Mac will continue to allow accepting inbound AirDrop file transfers from iPhone, iPad, or other Macs as long as the Finder AirDrop window is open. If you are done transferring files with AirDrop on the Mac, simply close the AirDrop Finder window to stop allowing further transfers.

If you’re at all confused then it is best to try this out yourself by opening the Photos app on the iPhone or iPad and then AirDropping a picture or two to a Mac. Despite being somewhat confusing to explain and demonstrate, it’s actually quite easy to use in practice. The key things to remember are that you must open the AirDrop Finder window on the Mac for it to be active in Mac OS, and you must tap on the AirDrop icon in the Sharing menu of iOS to be active on the iPhone or iPad.

A few things to keep in mind if you’re experiencing difficulty: AirDrop requires a reasonably new iPhone, iPad, or Mac, Bluetooth must be enabled, and the devices must be within reasonable reach of one another (the closer together the better). For the most part, AirDrop “just works” but if you are having problems the refer to this guide for troubleshooting AirDrop not working in iOS, and if it’s seemingly not even available then refer to here for what to do when AirDrop is not showing up on iPhone or iPad at all. On the Mac side of things, as long as the Mac is vaguely modern with a somewhat recent Mac OS or Mac OS X release and has Bluetooth, AirDrop usually works just fine without hassle.

How To Mute Someone In Facetime On Iphone, Ipad, And Mac

When you FaceTime someone, you don’t want them to hear unwanted noise from your end. If you are talking to someone or get a call that you don’t want anyone to hear on FaceTime, then you can mute them.

When you mute someone on Facetime, they won’t be able to listen to what you are saying, so you can carry on your conversation in peace without worrying about them listening to whatever you are saying.

But how do you mute someone in FaceTime on iPhone, iPad, and Mac? If this question has gripped you as well, you have arrived at the right post to sort out the question.

Mute Someone in FaceTime on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Though there is no dearth of video-calling apps, FaceTime remains the most loved app. Especially among the iDevice users. What separates it from the rest is the deep integration with the Apple ecosystem and a bunch of neat features including voice isolation and portrait video effect.

Though there is no dedicated muting switch, there is a workaround that gets the job done without any pain.

Mute Someone in FaceTime on iPhone and iPad

Launch the FaceTime app on your iPhone or iPad and call your friend as usual.

After you have connected to the person, tap on the screen.

Now, tap on the Mic icon.

This will mute your audio, and the other person won’t hear what you are saying.

To unmute, tap on the Mic icon again.

Yeah, that’s how you can prevent anyone on FaceTime from hearing what’s happening on your side. Ideally, it would have been better had there been a dedicated toggle to mute a specific person. Hopefully, Apple adds it to the video-calling app sooner than later.

Mute Someone in FaceTime on Mac

Open the Spotlight Search on your Mac by pressing Command + Spacebar key combo.

Search for FaceTime and then press Enter to open it.

When you mute the person, they won’t be able to hear what you are saying. This way, you can attend your calls or talk to someone even if you are on a FaceTime call.

How to Pause FaceTime Video on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

If you want to pause the video while on a FaceTime call so that the person cannot see what you are doing, there is a straightforward way to do that as well.

Pause FaceTime Video on iOS and iPadOS

Call any of your contact on FaceTime.

Now, tap on the screen and then on the Video icon. This will pause the video on FaceTime.

To resume the video, tap on the Video icon again.

                        Pause FaceTime Video on macOS

Open FaceTime on your Mac and call someone.

                        Wrapping up…

That’s pretty much it! So, yeah, that’s how you can mute someone in FaceTime. While it would be nice if the stock video-calling app offers a separate muting switch, I think this workaround does a decent job. Hence, use it to fill up the void. Hopefully, Apple ticks it off sooner than later.

Google Maps is one of the most popular navigation apps on iOS and macOS. It offers users various features, including directions, real-time traffic updates, and even satellite imagery. Unfortunately, all these features can come at a cost. Like all online services, it stores your information and browsing activities. If you want to keep your Google Maps history private, you’ll need to delete it. Here’s how to delete Google Maps history on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Why should you delete Google Maps history regularly?

Old navigation directions and places can take up a lot of space in your device’s memory, leading to slower searches. Delete your history, and the searches will be faster and more accurate.

Multiple searches can result in a cluttered environment. By clearing out all of the old data, you won’t have to spend time scrolling through old searches or navigating your way around unfamiliar areas.

Deleting your Google Maps history is a simple but important task that can secure your personal data and make your searches more accurate and efficient.

In conclusion, Google Maps is an incredible application and even allows you to plan a whole trip. However, it collects a lot of data, which may compromise privacy. Twitter caters to a huge audience. You can follow people from different walks of life and know what they’re up to. However, it gets difficult to track down every person tweeting on a certain genre, or maybe you don’t want to follow many users but just certain topics. For the same reason, Twitter introduced “Topics” back in 2023.

But how to use this feature to your benefit? In this article, I will guide you on how to follow and even unfollow Topics on Twitter using iPhone or iPad. Let’s get started!

There are four methods to follow Topics on Twitter. We have listed all the methods, and you can decide which suits the best to your needs.

How to follow Topics on Twitter from iPhone or iPad

                        1. From your Home timeline

When browsing through your Twitter Home timeline, you might encounter topics aligning with your interests. In such a case, simply tap the Follow button next to the topic’s name.

                        2. From the ‘For You’ tab

Tap the Search icon (second icon) next to your Home Screen.

Select the For you tab and scroll down.

Note: There is a possibility that Twitter might have no recommendations for you here.

                        3. From the ‘Topics’ Tab

Tap your Profile Picture and select Topics.

                        Now, head to Suggested.

                        4. Follow Topics from other users’ profile

                        Visit other users’ profiles.

Tap the three dots (…) at the top right.

Hence, if you followed something by mistake and wish to unfollow, read on!

💡 Tip: It is also annoying when you tweet something, and people worldwide keep coming at you. If you are tired of people trolling in your replies tweet section, learn how to make your Twitter account private.

There are multiple ways to unfollow all recommendations on Twitter! Here’s how.

How to unfollow Topics on Twitter from iPhone or iPad

                        1. From Twitter Home

When browsing through your Twitter Home timeline, you might come across tweets under the Topics you’ve followed or Twitter recommending these topics.

Tap the Topic name → Following.

                        2. From the Topics option

                        Open Twitter.

                        Tap your Profile Picture.

                        Select Topics.

Unfortunately, you can’t unfollow all topics in one go. So, you’ll have to repeat steps for every topic you wish to unfollow in the list.

Moreover, if you come across topic suggestions in your feed and don’t want those recommendations either, tap See More → Stop Recommending.

You will no longer see this topic in your feed. Follow the same every time you see Recommended Topics in your feed.

However, this only turns off recommendations for topics based on your likes or categories. You’ll still see notifications for interest-based recommendations. To disable those, read along.

Bonus: Get rid of “Recommended for you” notifications

The below method works on both: the mobile app and web browser. However, ignore the first step for web browsers.

                        Tap your Profile Picture.

                        Select Settings and Privacy.

                        Tap Push Notifications.

Next, scroll down to the From Twitter section.

                        That’s it!
