How Long Do Windows Updates Take? Easy Tool to Find Out Use a tool to get the info you want

If you ever wondered how long it takes for a Windows update to install, there is now a way you can find out.

This method does not involve using the stopwatch tool to time the process, instead, you can make use of some dedicated software.

ViveTool is available for all users and all you have to do in order to get it is to head on over to GitHub.

This article will show you how exactly you can use this tool to time Windows 11 updates installations.

To fix Windows PC system issues, you will need a dedicated tool

Fortect is a tool that does not simply cleans up your PC, but has a repository with several millions of Windows System files stored in their initial version. When your PC encounters a problem, Fortect will fix it for you, by replacing bad files with fresh versions. To fix your current PC issue, here are the steps you need to take:

Download Fortect and install it on your PC.

Start the tool’s scanning process to look for corrupt files that are the source of your problem

Fortect has been downloaded by

Here is a question that we are sure many of you have asked at a certain point in time: how long does it really take for Windows to download and install an update?

We are, of course, talking about Windows 11, as we can all remember that Windows 10 took a heavy time toll when updates were available.

At the Windows 11 launch event, Panos Panay mentioned that Windows updates are 40% quicker to download, compared to the previous OS, and also install faster.

Read on to find out how long a Windows Update takes on Windows 10 or 11.

Instead of timing these actions with the built-in stopwatch, as some do, having the system show you this information would be a more than welcome feature.

But while Microsoft hasn’t included such an integration yet, know that there is still a way you can find out how long a Windows update will take to install.

Windows 11 can actually predict how much time it will take to install available updates. And although that feature is not yet available to all Insiders, you can enable it relatively simply using the ViveTool app.

This process is easy, will take up only a few minutes of your time, and after you install it you will be able to check the estimated updates installation time in the Windows 11 operating system.

Here’s how you use this tool:

Download the ViveTool from the GitHub website.

After you finished downloading, extract the archive into a folder.

Open the Windows Terminal as an Administrator on your Windows 11 computer, then go to the folder where you have extracted the downloaded tool and run it.

Use the following command:

ViVeTool addconfig 25704915 2

5. Restart your computer for the changes to apply.

When Windows 11 prompts you to restart the system to apply patches, open the Start menu and press the power button. You will see the approximate installation time next to Shut Down and Restart buttons.

How Long Do Wireless Keyboard Batteries Last?

Although wireless peripherals are more convenient and mess-free, they are plagued with an issue of limited battery life!

The wireless keyboard owners would know the batteries hardly last a few months to a few years.

Therefore, be careful about what wireless keyboard brand you choose and how long their batteries last.

The wireless keyboards use rechargeable Lithium-ion or alkaline batteries that last between 3 months to a few years or more when you use the device in moderation.

Moreover, the keyboard using primary AA batteries would deplete more quickly, requiring frequent replacements.

Read on to find out how long your wireless keyboard brand battery will last and whether you can extend its life.

How Long do Wireless Keyboard Batteries Last?

There is no doubt that wireless keyboards are more comfortable and more practical than regular keyboards.

You can remotely connect it to the PC or laptop and use it almost anywhere. However, the wireless peripheral is only as good until its batteries last.

Generally, the wireless keyboard batteries would last between 3 to 36 months, with one rechargeable battery lasting 150 to 190 hours on one charge, depending on the makers and brand.

Therefore, you need to be wary about the wireless keyboard (brand) you use, the type of batteries it employs, and whether they are rechargeable.

Please see the table below to compare the battery life of various keyboard brands.

BrandBattery LifeSpecification

Logitech MK2953 yearsIt uses 2 AAA batteries with longer battery lifespan.

Razer’s Black Widow2-3 yearsThe batteries last 192 hours before recharging

CORSAIR K100 AIR WIRELESS2-3 yearsUp to 50 hours with RGB effects or 200 hours with backlighting off

SteelSeries Apex Pro1 year or moreThe battery would last 30-40 hours before recharging.

Redragon k596 Vishnu1-2 yearsThe battery lasts 10 hours before requring a recharge.

However, the wireless keyboard’s battery life would depend on the usage and enabled features.

The keyboard that sees continuous usage of 6 hours or more would drain the battery quickly, requiring frequent recharges. Similarly, enabling backlighting and RGBs will drain the batteries more quickly.

Modern gaming wireless keyboards from Redragon, Logitech, and Razer often have extra features enabled, which may consume more power.

Generally, these keyboards require recharging batteries every 1 to 3 days and replacements every 1 to 2 years.

On the other hand, the Magic keyboard battery should last about a month, but older Apple keyboards would hardly last a few days.

The secret behind Magic keyboard batteries lasting significantly longer than other brands is its ability to efficiently use the battery, enable battery-saving mode, and reduce power consumption on extra features like lighting.

Why do Batteries in Wireless Keyboards drain so fast?

As previously mentioned, many reasons may cause wireless keyboard batteries to drain faster.

Here are a few reasons why your wireless keyboard battery drains quickly.

1. User-specific Activity

Some user-specific activities, such as gaming and continuous keyboard use, may cause the peripheral’s battery to drain faster.

The wireless keyboard battery would usually require recharging every 2 to 3 days, but relentlessly using the keyboard will drain it quickly, requiring a frequent recharge.

The battery will require frequent recharging as it ages, which may drain it more quickly.

2. Extra Enabled Features

Modern wireless keyboards have extra features such as keyboard backlighting and RGB lighting.

Enabling these features every time you use the keyboard will consume more power, requiring frequent recharging.

Some keyboards allow dimming the lighting or turning it off after specific activity to preserve battery life.

3. Bluetooth Interference

Continuous Bluetooth interference from other wireless devices may drain the keyboard’s battery life.

Similarly, enabling high polling rates and LED effects may drain the battery quickly when you have a low-quality keyboard.

When moderately used, the wireless keyboard batteries would last longer.

However, you must adopt tips to use the wireless keyboard effectively and reduce excess battery consumption.

Tips to Extend Battery Life in Wireless Keyboard

Here are some proven tips to help save your wireless keyboard’s battery from draining.

1. Turn off the Device

Turning off the wireless keyboard during inactivity will prevent unnecessary device standby time.

Moreover, it will prevent the device from continuously turning on from accidental typing on the keypad and bumps when traveling.

2. Restrict Keyboard-Intensive Activities

Limiting keyboard-intensive activities such as typing to only a couple of hours a day will help save batteries from draining.

Similarly, limiting gaming activity relying on typing keys will also help save the battery’s shelf life.

3. Turn off RGBs and Backlighting

Use the dedicated software provided by the keyboard manufacturers to turn off RGBs and backlighting.

Otherwise, you can dim the light or even automate it to turn off after some time of inactivity, especially the Magic keyboard.

4. Keep the Peripheral Close to the PC

Shortening the distance between the PC and the wireless keyboard will prevent incessant interference from draining the battery.

Unlike wired devices, wireless devices need to be in close range of the device.

5. Keep Away From Metal Objects/Surface

Metal objects or surfaces such as smartphones, speakers, and metal tools interfere with Bluetooth and RF signals.

Clean your desk space of all metal objects to solve this problem.

6. Invest in Quality Peripherals

Always buy quality wireless keyboards with longer battery shelf life, dedicated software, and a warranty.

Using good wireless keyboards will help prevent batteries from draining quickly.

How to Check the Battery Life of a Wireless Keyboard?

Monitoring the battery life is a great idea to keep a tab on the wireless keyboard’s power consumption.

In fact, most wireless keyboard makers provide dedicated software to assess battery life and health.

KeyboardBattery Status

RazerCheck the battery indicator color to determine the battery status. Green indicates charged, yellow indicates low, and red indicates depleted.

LogitechOpen the built-in Logitech device software on your PC or laptop and check the dashboard to find the battery status.

3-Red Flashes indicate less than 25%

Otherwise, you can check the wireless device’s settings (Windows 10 and Mac) to assess the battery life.

Wireless keyboards are plagued with limited battery life and problems solely caused by them.

Therefore, always buy quality wireless peripherals from a reputed brand and use power-saving tips to extend the battery life.

Follow this guide to keep track of your wireless keyboard usage and battery life on the go.

How To Use The Reset Windows Update Tool

Updating a Windows computer isn’t all roses. While some Windows update glitches are quite easy to fix, others can be challenging. Interestingly, there are third-party troubleshooting programs that can fix almost all Windows Update problems.

The “Reset Windows Update Tool” is one example. In this tutorial, we’ll review the tool, focusing on its capabilities, installation procedure, features, and use cases.

Table of Contents

What Does the Reset Windows Update Tool Do?

The Reset Windows Update Tool (RWUT) is a multifaceted utility that not only resolves potential issues affecting Windows updates, but also helps to repair corrupt system files, replace missing registry keys, force Group Policy update, resolve problems with the Microsoft Store, and much more.

Fundamentally, the RWUT consolidates all potential fixes for Windows update issues and other associated problems in one interface. It grants users direct access to hidden system tools like the System File Checker, Check Disk Utility, Windows Component Store, etc.

The tool has no graphical interface but it is super easy to use and compatible with devices running Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11.

Installing the Reset Windows Update Tool

If you’re unsure of your PC’s processor type, refer to our comprehensive tutorial that details different ways to tell if you’re using a 32-Bit or 64-Bit computer.

From experience, some browsers like Microsoft Edge may block the file download because the app is unrecognized and “could harm your device.” That’s Microsoft Edge’s “SmartScreen” security tool being overprotective. The file is safe and you have nothing to worry about. To bypass the SmartScreen restriction, select the three-dot menu icon next to the setup file and select Keep. That’ll unblock the file and download it to your PC.

Run the setup file and follow the prompts to install the RWUT on your PC. The instruction on the installation page recommends closing all Windows apps and other third-party programs before running the setup.

Close the setup window when you get a success message. Afterward, launch the Reset Windows Update Tool to explore its feature or use it to fix system problems.

How To Use the Reset Windows Update Tool

You’ll be prompted to select your preferred language when you open the program for the first time. You can always change the language and other customizations like font color in the app’s settings menu.

In the “Select an option” row, type the number that corresponds to your preferred language and press Enter.

You’ll also need to accept the tool’s usage terms and conditions to proceed. The T&C’s basically state that although the features of the tool work, the developer will not take any responsibility for any damage to your device.

Type Y in the “Do you want to continue with this process?” row and press Enter to continue.

The main menu has about 19 options and commands. The command to run will depend on the problem your PC is facing. To perform an operation, type the number that corresponds to the command you want to run and press Enter.

Before you run any command, go through the next section to have an idea of what each option does and the changes they make to your computer.

Reset Windows Update Tool: Features & Use Cases

Here’s a cursory highlight of some troubleshooting operations you can run with this tool.

1. Open the System Protection

This is a shortcut to Windows System Protection—a Windows section where you can create restore points, configure restore settings, and manage disk space.

Type 1 in the terminal and press Enter. That’ll immediately open the Windows System Protection window.

2. Reset Windows Update Components

What this option does is fix issues preventing your PC from updating Windows. If, for instance, Windows takes forever to check for new updates, or your PC won’t install new Windows updates, running the command in the RWUT can resolve the problems.

All you need to do is type 2 (or the corresponding digit next to the “Reset the Windows Update Components” option) and press Enter.

The tool will reset your PC’s Windows Update component by restarting the Windows Update services, Application Identity service, Cryptographic Services, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), and other services that help your PC install Windows updates. The operation will also delete old software distribution copies and replace corrupt or missing files needed to update your computer.

Press any key on your keyboard and try updating your PC again.

3. Delete Temporary Files

Windows creates different types of temporary files (caches system files, application data, error reports and feedbacks, internet files, etc.) as you use your PC. These files can take up a huge chunk of storage, hence deleting them regularly is a good way to free up disk space in Windows.

Deleting temporary files with the RWUT is as easy as typing 3 (or whatever digit corresponds to the Delete the temporary files in Windows option) in the terminal and pressing Enter.

4. Open Internet Explorer Option

The tool also provides a shortcut to access the “Internet Properties” menu in Windows devices. Type 4 in the terminal and press Enter.

That’ll open the Internet Properties window where you can manage VPN and proxy connections, pop-up blocker, browser add-ons, and other information like browsing history, cookies, passwords, web form info, etc.

5. Run Chkdsk on the Windows Partition

The Check Disk Utility (chkdsk) is a built-in system tool that fixes damaged system files, faulty sectors on the hard disk, and other issues preventing the installation of Windows updates. You can run the Check Disk utility from the RWUT instead of having to type lengthy commands in the Command Prompt.

On the app dashboard, type 5 (or the digit that corresponds to Runs Chkdsk on the Windows partition) and press Enter.

6. Run the System File Checker

The System File Checker (SFC) is another built-in Windows tool that scans for system file corruption and repairs/replaces missing or damaged system files. You can also run the System File Checker from the RWUT instead of having to run multiple commands in Command Prompt.

Type 6 in the app terminal, press Enter and follow the recommendations on the results page.

You might need to reboot your computer to complete or execute pending system repairs.

7. Scan for Component Store Corruption

The “Component Store” houses the files and functions required to customize and update Windows. Problems with files in the Component Store can cause Windows update issues. The RWUT can fix Component Store corruption at the push of a button.

Type 7 in the “Select an option” row and press Enter.

8. Reset the Microsoft Store

Are you unable to download apps from the Microsoft Store? Or, you can’t access the app store because your computer won’t open Microsoft Store app? Resetting the Microsoft Store via the RWUT can fix the problem.

Launch the tool, type 13 (or whatever digit corresponds to Reset Microsoft Windows Store), and press Enter.

The command will clear the Microsoft Store’s cache and fix any underlying problems. The Microsoft Store app will open when the reset operation is successful.

9. Check Your Product Key

Finding your PC’s product key has never been easier. You don’t need to check your PC’s retail box, instruction manual, or your Microsoft account’s order history. Launch the RWUT, type 16 in the terminal or dashboard, and press Enter. Your PC’s product key will appear on the screen instantly.

The All-Round Tool

The features of the Reset Windows Update Tool aren’t limited to what we listed above. There are more shortcuts, options, and operations that the program can execute. The “Explore location solutions” option, for instance, will redirect you to the Windows Troubleshooting menu where you can access tools that’ll diagnose and fix network issues, connectivity-related problems, etc.

Alienware’s M11X Gaming Laptop Is Easy To Take With You

If you’re a PC gamer sick of lugging around an 8- to 10-pound monster with awful battery life just to play games, Alienware’s M11x is your salvation. This 11.6-inch ultraportable laptop has enough power to play all the latest titles while making only modest compromises, yet it’s considerably more portable than typical gaming notebooks in the 15-inch range, let alone giant desktop-replacement notebooks. With prices starting at $799 (as of April 2, 2010; our review system was kitted out to a $1099 configuration), it generally doesn’t cost as much as those larger alternatives, either.

Our review system came with 4GB of RAM (up from 2GB in the base configuration, and highly recommended). The base configuration also includes the Intel SU4100 ULV processor; the SU7300 that our review unit had costs $100 more. Graphics duties are handled by the very capable GeForce 335M with 1GB of video memory. The system unfortunately does not use nVidia’s new Optimus switchable graphics technology, so you have to switch between the Intel integrated GPU and the nVidia GPU manually (or rely on Windows power profiles). Fortunately, Alienware has made this task quite easy: The Function-F6 key combination toggles between the Intel and nVidia graphics, so it’s easy to get longer battery life when you’re just surfing the Web and then to kick in the powerful discrete graphics when it’s game time. As for storage, the default configuration has a 160GB, 5400-rpm hard drive; you should opt for one of the faster 7200-rpm models, which can have a big impact on overall performance. Our review system was loaded with a 500GB drive, but if you have cash to spare, you can pay through the nose for a 256GB solid-state drive.

Regardless of what the true CPU speed is, the M11x flies. On our WorldBench 6 tests, it earned a score of 77, which is among the best marks we’ve seen from an ultraportable PC. Does the overclocked CPU ruin your battery life? Our tests say no–at least, not if you throw enough battery at it. Using the Intel integrated graphics, with the CPU in its overclocked state, we achieved about 7.5 hours of battery life. That was without any sort of bulky extended battery sticking out of the bottom of the case. In fact, extended batteries are not available: The M11x’s eight-cell prismatic battery is fully integrated and can’t be easily removed, which helps give the case a smooth and clean look.

What about game performance? I was easily able to play current AAA titles like Modern Warfare 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 with good results. You won’t be able to run the more-strenuous games at maximum detail level, but you can set things high enough for games to look really good and still get smooth frame rates. You can easily max out other games, like Left 4 Dead 2. If there’s a downside to playing games on this system, it’s the fan noise: When things get hot, the fan spins up loudly. I can’t help but think that a better ventilation design would have helped.

The screen is probably the worst part of the Alienware M11x, and it’s only average. The 1366 by 768 resolution is plenty for an 11.6-inch display, but the color gamut is limited and a little washed out. Viewing angles are mediocre, and the poor vertical viewing angles are especially noticeable on a small laptop such as this. The audio, on the other hand, is excellent for an ultraportable system. Whether I was listening to music, watching video, or playing games, the sound this little guy pumped out remained relatively clean even at high volumes.

I’m especially pleased with the port selection and location on this laptop. The left side has three video plugs (VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort), along with a powered USB port, gigabit ethernet, memory card readers, and FireWire. The right side is relatively clean, with two USB ports and three audio jacks (a microphone input and two headphone jacks, to make it easier to share a movie with someone in private). Note that the machine has no optical drive, so if you buy your games on disc, you’ll need an external USB drive to load them onto the system; with so many games and other PC apps sold through digital distribution these days, this limitation is less of a problem than it used to be. Both 802.11a/b/g/n networking and Bluetooth 2.1 are standard.

Google Ads Rolling Out Multiple Updates To App Campaigns

App campaigns in Google Ads can now be optimized specifically for driving as many app installs within as short a timeframe as possible.

An update coming later this year will simplify the campaign creation process with a new tool for optimizing images.

Here’s more about each of these updates to app campaigns.

Maximize Conversions Bidding in App Campaigns

Advertisers can now use maximize conversions bidding through app campaigns.

This allows app campaigns to be optimized for generating as many installs in as little time as possible.

Google strongly emphasizes the speed in which maximize conversions bidding is designed to work:

“Whether you’re releasing a new game, launching a seasonal campaign or promoting new content in your app, it’s important for you to be able to grow your audience quickly.”

Advertisers can simply enter their budget and Google’s machine learning technology will do the rest.

To get started with Maximize conversions bidding:

Select the “Bidding” section

Uncheck the box for “Set a target cost per install (optional)”

Save the changes on the campaign

Simplified Image Requirements for App Campaigns

App campaigns currently accept over 30 different sizes and dimensions for image assets.

That can get complicated, so Google Ads is shifting from size-based to ratio-based image specifications.

Google says this will make the creative process simpler and more efficient.

The three aspect ratios are:

1:1 (Square): Minimum size of 200 x 200, recommended size of 1200 x 1200

1.91:1 (Landscape): Minimum size of 600 x 314, maximum size of 1200 x 628

4:5 (Portrait): Minimum size of 320 x 400, Recommended size of 1200 x 1500

Google is also increasing the image file size limit from 150KB to 5MB so assets can be uploaded in higher quality.

The approved file format for images now only include .jpg and .png. Google is disabling GIFs as an option.

All app campaigns will be migrated to this set of requirements starting early next year.

As this update gets closer to rolling out, Google Ads plans to introduce a tool for cropping images into either of the three supported aspect ratios.

The cropping tool will also be available when images are uploaded for newly created campaigns.

This tool should be available in the next few months. Here’s a mockup of what it might look like.

Find Out Your Actual Gmail Reputation

A new tool from Gmail lets you see what Gmail and its users think of your email based on a reputation score and spam reporting levels. Follow Tim Watson’s tutorial for how to use it.

It’s no secret to email marketers that the major ISPs create reputation scores for email senders and that a good reputation is fundamental to getting delivered to the inbox.

Until now you had no way of knowing your Gmail reputation score. Getting to the inbox has felt like ten pin bowling with a curtain in front of the pins.

But over the summer Gmail made available a free tool for senders to obtain data on their own reputation. Finally you can know what Gmail users think of your email.

I’ll cover in a minute how to sign up to see your own stats, but first a quick summary of why you’ll want to do this.

Access gives you reports for Spam Rate, IP Reputation, Domain Reputation, Feedback Loop, Authentication, Encryption and Delivery Errors.

So far I’ve found the first three of these reports to be the most useful. So let me go into those.

With Gmail you don’t have a single reputation score but in fact Gmail calculates reputation for both the sending domain and sending IP addresses. Domain reputation is becoming a big factor at many major ISPs.

IP Reputation report

This report shows the reputation for all the IP addresses Gmail has seen email being sent from for your domain.

There are four levels of reputation and of course you’ll want to be high, as in the example below. Within the user interface (but not shown below) you’ll see detailed information for each of the IP addresses Gmail detected and their reputation rating.

The bars only show for days that you actually sent email.

Domain Reputation report

This shows the reputation Gmail has calculated for your sending domain. As with IP reputation it’s graded in four levels.

Spam Rate Report

Shows a graph of spam complaints over time. This is the number of your recipients classifying your email as spam in the Gmail user interface.

What level of Spam complaint rates is acceptable in Gmail?

You should be aiming to keep spam complaint rate below 0.1%. Because the report only shows data to one decimal point that means aim for most days aim to have 0% with a few at 0.1%. From the reports I’ve looked at the occasional 0.2% is not overall too harmful to reputation.

There is one additional criterion to get this report; you must have DKIM authentication setup. If you are using a good ESP this should be the case.

Gmail spam feedback loop (FBL) report

The feedback loop report shows the Feedback Loop Spam rate and Feedback Loop identifier count.

Confused? Sounds like the same as the Spam Rate report?

Well it is a very similar but this report is specifically giving a summary of the stats from the Gmail feedback loop system. The feedback loop system provides user spam complaint data back to ESPs that have support for this Gmail system.

It’s based on the same user spam complaints as the Spam Rate report, but provides further granularity. As long as your ESP has extra Gmail specific headers in your emails and is signed up with the Gmail feedback loop then data for spam complaints by campaign is also available.

How to use the tool

The most important use is quite simply to know if you have strong Gmail inbox placement. There is no tool or metric available anywhere else that will give you a better sense of this.

Simply signup and check you’ve high IP reputation and high domain reputation.

If you’ve high reputation then you’ve nothing to do but monitor it stays high. Put it on the regular report list, weekly or monthly depending on your level of email activity.

If it’s not high then you’ve now hard facts that you’ve an issue to work on and solve.

Does this help me fix my deliverability issue?

Some of the reports I’ve not covered give your deliverability analysis some further clues and of course looking at the time line for complaints and your sending pattern can help further.

Questions to consider when complaints peak include; what segments were being sent to? Was different or new data introduced? Was the message and content different to your typical emails? Did you change display from name or use a very different subject line?

For a prioritised list of the main causes of poor deliverability see 7 email deliverability issues.

Getting access

The tool is free, you just need a Google account and to complete a short verification process to prove you own the domain for which you wish to view stats.

The verification process involves adding a DNS record to your sending domain. If your company manages your domain then it’s 15 minutes work for the IT person in charge of your domain DNS to do this.

I’ve been able to get same day access to the Gmail postmaster tool for some of the brands I work with.

Head over to the Gmail Postmaster tools page to sign-up for access.

Along with Microsoft SNDS the Gmail postmaster tool is looking like one of the two must have tools for monitoring of inbox placement. It’s already become a standard tool in my toolbox.
