Design and build
The Hohem iSteady V2 is made of sturdy non-slip plastic that’s easy to grip. It comes with a mini tripod that can be easily screwed on and off as necessary.
It boasts innovative hardware designs with a built-in AI tracking sensor. This means it can independently handle face and gesture tracking without any software assistance.
Further, it’s got a small ring light built around the AI sensor. This has three brightness settings and comes in handy for low-light shooting,
It’s incredibly light, which is remarkable for a device that packs in an internal battery and motors. The gimbal supports phones with a maximum width of 55-90mm, a thickness of 11mm, and a weight of 280 grams. With a phone attached, the gimbal weighs about 500 grams. It’s pretty comfortable to hold and carry around.
Further, the phone clasp is well-made and sturdy. You can easily insert and remove your phone.
The handle is ergonomically designed to fit comfortably in your hand.
The only drawback about the build quality is the mini-tripod, which feels a bit fragile. So, be mindful when using it.
Also, note that the Hohem iSteady V2 is not waterproof. So it’s unsuitable for shooting in the rain or underwater. Lastly, I feel that the design could have been more aesthetically pleasing. It seems pretty basic and lacks a wow factor when you first look at it. However, it more than makes up for this in functionality (explained later)!
Performance and stability
I tested the iSteady V2 with an iPhone 8 Plus, an iPhone X, and an iPhone 12 Pro Max. On the whole, it provides excellent stabilization for almost any smartphone.
However, note that the motor may appear in the frame if your phone’s camera is too close to the central area. This is because the phone always needs to be centered within the clasp for the gimbal to function correctly. Since iPhones have cameras near the top of the phone, I did not face any issues with the motor appearing in my footage.
One of the most spectacular features is that the iSteady V2 automatically switches to low-angle shooting when you turn it upside down. This kind of camera movement can give you some pretty spectacular shots to play around with for your creative video projects.
Further, experimenting with the different modes like inception and time-lapse result in endless creative possibilities!
Stability is perhaps the most vital factor to look for in a gimbal, and iSteady V2 does not disappoint. It offers smooth footage for most circumstances. I tried walking around, dancing, rolling in a chair, and making a full circle, and iSteady V2 followed along perfectly without any glitches.
Moreover, it did not tire my hands, and in fact, I was so enamored that I didn’t want to put it down!
Lastly, the battery comfortably lasts for 7-9 hours, making it convenient for long shoots. Moreover, when you’re not using it, it can double up as a power bank to charge your phone! That’s a nifty little extra feature.
AI visual tracking
AI tracking is the flagship feature of the Hohem iSteady V2 gimbal, so I was excited to try it out. The AI sensor is built into a small module on top of the phone clamp. It gives you face or object tracking power when using the camera in any social media platform or video app.
So, it’s perfect for shooting action scenes or video calls. The subject can move around, and the gimbal will automatically rotate to keep them in the frame.
To use the AI tracking, turn on the gimbal and push the button on top of the AI sensor. Wait a few seconds for the ring light to flash, and it’s set. When using the front camera, you can enable AI tracking by making the OK sign with your right hand. The small red light flashes green which indicates that the gimbal is now tracking you.
I am pretty impressed by the gesture recognition and intelligent tracking. I’ve not come across a system like it before, so it’s truly the USP of the iSteady V2. It’s incredibly responsive and works like a charm. It kept everyone at iGeeksBlog entertained for hours! I’m sure it’ll add convenience to your video recordings.
Other gestures that you can use are as follows:
Hold up your hand to stop tracking
Make a thumbs up with both hands to switch to landscape orientation
Two thumbs pointed to the right will switch your phone to portrait orientation.
Of course, you can also achieve all these functions with the physical buttons on the gimbal. Now that we are done with the basics, let’s understand how to use it!
How to set up and use the Hohem iSteady V2 gimbal
The gimbal comes with a handy manual that clearly explains how to set it up. Please do not attempt to set it up without first seeing this booklet, as you may end up damaging the motors. Here’s an overview of the gimbal setup process:
Make sure you secure your phone into the clasp before turning on the gimbal. Otherwise, the motor will repeatedly run through the startup motions that may damage the gimbal.
After mounting your phone, turn on the gimbal and open the Hohem Pro app to start using the device! It’s pretty straightforward, but it may prove somewhat complicated for those who have never used a gimbal before.
If the LED indicator lights do not appear when you turn on the gimbal, charge the gimbal. It took me about three hours to fully charge it.
On the whole, the setup process is pretty straightforward. But it might prove complicated for beginners. However, referring to the manual will help you out.
Also, note that the Hohem Pro app is needed to connect the gimbal to your phone. It also has a built-in camera functionality and many extra features. But you can also use the gimbal with the native camera app on your phone or other apps like Instagram.

The Hohem Pro app is incredibly functional and completes the iSteady V2 experience. It’s straightforward and intuitive to use.
For AI tracking, you can select an object or face. Once enabled, the gimbal will move to keep the face or object in the frame.
You can also adjust the motor speed to achieve better framing for fast-moving objects. But keep in mind that this can result in jerkier video and will also drain the battery faster.

The idea is it can capture steady video and blur-free photos, which has been the goal since the start of time for any device with a decent camera.
How well will it work? The exciting videos shared by vivo, are, of course, worthy of scepticism. At worst, they could be faked, as we’ve seen all too often.
But if it does work… real-world impact could be anything from general improvement, given how hard smartphone companies are already working on both hardware and software to offer steady video or photos, or actually fantastic, if you no longer need a handheld gimbal to capture that smooth framing.
Aside from video, it could be really handy for low-light photography. Even with OIS and multi-frame image capture, there’s only so much jitter a phone camera can withstand. This big camera housing could offer quite a bit .
This could (again, big emphasis on possibility) open the door for longer exposures, and much better dark and night snaps if the gimbal tech is reliable.
Up until now we haven’t seen much else about the vivo X50 series. A company executive was seen talking about the newly announced 50MP Samsung Isocell GN1 sensor, though, implying a range of new tech on this device or device series.
As an aside: I’ll never forget that vivo sponsored the FIFA World Cup 2023 in Russia, alongside the likes of giants like Coca-Cola. That which must’ve surely cost parent-company BBK an untold fortune, especially as it will sponsor the next World Cup in Qatar, too.
(One of the key searches out of that World Cup was: “What is vivo,” and via Google Trends you can see people searching for vivo out of nowhere right on the World Cup timeline.)

Mindfulness Is All The Rage—But Does It Work?
Are your students stressed out, tired, and unable to focus? They’re not alone. The average eighth-grade student now spends over 25 hours a year taking standardized tests , while the average high school student reports feeling stressed 80 percent of the time .
Even kindergartners are feeling more academic pressure , spending less time on art and music and more on math, reading, and assessment compared with the late 1990s. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, childhood stress can lead to permanent changes in brain structure and function, increasing the likelihood of learning difficulties, memory problems, and chronic diseases in adult life. Meanwhile, a 2013 report by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that the negative effects of stress persist into the high school years: 35 percent of teens lie awake at night because of stress, cutting into critical sleep time and increasing the likelihood that they’ll have concentration problems or experience feelings of sadness and depression.
Studies suggest that the amount of stress matters, and can impact student academic performance as well. While low levels of stress can boost memory formation, moderate and high levels of stress can impair a student’s ability to retrieve memories, making it more challenging to pass tests, write papers, or make a presentation in class.
Can mindfulness—a nonreligious form of meditation that teaches students to breathe, focus, and center themselves in the present moment—help reduce any of the detrimental effects of classroom stress or hectic student schedules? Can it help students learn, leading to gains in academic achievement? Many schools are betting on it, integrating relatively simple mindfulness techniques into the school day.
Mindfulness Reduces StressFor Rebecca McLelland-Crawley’s middle school students, stress was becoming a major problem. When the school district surveyed students a few years ago on their stress levels, the responses were staggering.
“More than 80 percent of the kids at our school feel stressed, most or all of it bad. It’s normal to feel stressed—but it’s not normal for an 11-, 12-, and 13-year-old to feel toxic levels of stress. So that was how classroom mindfulness came about,” said McLelland-Crawley.
To address the problem, her students created their own mindfulness group, NüYü, to learn more about stress and to share healthy coping strategies with their school. Every week, they encourage other students to participate in the Panther “Pause” Challenge, a series of stress-reducing lessons and activities. NüYü students recently held a wellness fair for over 200 parents, students, and community members, at which they introduced yoga stations, stress balls, and glitter jars to participants. They also held workshops on mindful eating and explained the science behind mindfulness.
Now in its second year, the program is expanding to include sixth- and seventh-grade students at the school.
The research suggests that McLelland-Crawley’s students are on the right path—mindfulness can be an effective strategy to help students deal with stress. In 2014, a Dutch study found that elementary school students who participated in 30-minute mindfulness sessions twice a week for six weeks exhibited lower levels of stress, higher levels of well-being, and better behavior than their peers.
Mindfulness can be especially helpful for children who experience stress resulting from community violence, poverty, substance use, and trauma. In a 2023 study, students from two low-income, urban middle schools participated in a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program and experienced a range of mental and behavioral benefits, from lower levels of stress and depression to a more positive mood and better ability to cope with challenging situations.
Mindfulness Boosts Academic PerformanceIn addition to boosting students’ emotional and psychological well-being, mindfulness can yield academic benefits by increasing students’ ability to self-regulate and focus.
Annie O’Shaughnessy, a high school English teacher in Vermont, spends 10 minutes at the start of class every Monday practicing mindfulness with her students. Using a combination of mindfulness videos and breathing techniques, she helps students handle the stress and anxiety they typically experience during school.
“I teach mindfulness every single year in English class. After teaching it, I can go up to a kid who is about to give a presentation, and I can see that he’s in amygdala hijack mode. He’s forgotten what he’s going to say, and he wants to leave. So I tell him, ‘So now it’s time to do the breathing.’ So he does the square breathing exercise, where he breathes in, holds for four [seconds], breathes out, holds for four. And he’s then able to give his presentation,” she said.
As improbable as it sounds, taking a few seconds to breathe and focus can translate into academic benefits. In 2023, researchers at the University of British Columbia found that fourth- and fifth-grade students that participated in a 12-week mindfulness program had higher levels of attention, better retention, and 15 percent higher math grades than their peers. This was on top of psychological benefits such as lower levels of depression and increased feelings of optimism.
A 2023 study further explored the connection between mindfulness and cognitive benefits, looking at middle school students in a four-week mindfulness program. Compared with their peers, these students showed significant improvements in working memory capacity. “These results are consistent with the notion that the practice of meditation—which requires sustained attention while simultaneously redirecting attention back to the current experience—is closely related to the function of working memory,” researchers wrote in their study.
Academic benefits have been found for children as early as preschool. A 2023 study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison examined a 12-week Kindness Curriculum program that included mindfulness exercises in addition to kindness practices such as empathy, gratitude, and sharing. Compared with their peers, the preschoolers participating in the program earned higher report card grades, in addition to showing more empathy, kindness, and willingness to share.
“Mindfulness is a great tool for learning,” explained O’Shaughnessy. “If I want my students to learn, I need their prefrontal cortex, I need their neocortex. I need those parts of their brain online, and in most grades, those parts of their brain aren’t going to be online until they’ve relaxed and done some mindful activities.”
Build It: A Smart, Ambient Led
Ambient technology is the current rage for presenting information in a unobtrusive and, sometimes, sublime manner. The idea here is that you can glean the same information by simply looking at the color of a cube, rather than consulting a sensor’s text output.

Ambient Mood Cube: Install an ultrasonic motion detector and have the cube change its color due to your personal proximity. Kinda like a colorful greeting for a close encounter.
Interactive Ambient Art Cube: Add an accelerometer and create a cube that changes its color based on X-Y-Z orientation. Play with it, toss it around; the color changes due to your movements.
Weather Cube: Connect a barometric pressure sensor to the Arduino and program specific color changes for different barometric pressure readings. For example, make high pressure green, low pressure red, rising pressure, blue, and falling pressure yellow.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 picks up where the older release left off, delivering the same basic form factor. However, we do get a $999 price tag, water resistance, and a larger secondary display.
As for repair costs, Samsung’s own website states that replacing the interior foldable screen on the Z Flip 3 costs $349. If you’ve only broken the outer secondary screen, however, Samsung will bill you $99.

Samsung’s fourth-generation Galaxy Flip 4 retains the same design as its predecessor with some subtle durability improvements like a stronger adhesive for the pre-applied screen protector. Hopefully, this should translate to fewer display replacements.

The first foldable phone from a major brand saw a massive delay from April to September, as Samsung fixed flaws found by reviewers. Nevertheless, the ~$2,000 Galaxy Fold eventually landed in quite a few markets, bringing the foldable concept to commercial reality.

The cost to replace the Z Fold 4’s inner screen has increased slightly this year, coming in at $499. You’ll still pay $149 for the outer glass screen. If you’re concerned about potentially breaking your brand-new foldable, the Samsung Care Plus subscription will lower the cost substantially.

HUAWEI Mate X/XS
Huawei’s first foldable phone was only available in China, but made for a different approach to Samsung’s device. The Mate X packed an out-folding design, with the screen folding back. Meanwhile Samsung’s foldable had an in-folding display that folded like a book.
In any event, HUAWEI’s website pegs a replacement screen at 7,080 yuan (~$1,010). That’s almost half the price of the Mate X in China, currently retailing for around ~$2,400. This seems like the price for the screen only rather than any labor, so it’s possible the final price will change.

The Chinese brand is taking the Galaxy Fold route with the Mate X2, featuring an in-folding design with an external display rather than the Mate X/XS’s out-folding design. HUAWEI is also charging almost $3,000 for the device, which is expensive for foldables too.
Dropping the foldable could be an expensive mistake, as Huawei’s website notes that you’ll be paying 5,699 yuan (~$883) for an inner screen replacement. That’s essentially the same price as a vanilla HUAWEI P40.
The outer screen will cost 799 yuan (~$124) to replace though, which seems in line with (if not cheaper than) screen repair costs for traditional flagship phones.
Motorola Razr
Motorola’s first foldable phone is a tribute to the Razr of yore, offering a clamshell design that opens up to reveal a tall screen. It’s the cheapest foldable device from a major brand, coming in at $1,500, but it’s still pricey compared to traditional flagships (especially with its mid-range specs otherwise).
