Suggested January 2024 Firechat: An Instant Messaging App That Don’T Need Internet Connection
From time to time, there are new mobile apps that hit the media and get everyone excited either because they were bought by a computing giant like Google or Yahoo!, or because they are not that special but manage to become very popular, like Flappy Bird.
There is a third scenario where a truly innovative app comes into the market and makes some breakthrough in the Tech world. This is the case of FireChat, an iOS app that has recently hit Apple’s App Store. Why? Because it is the beginning of a new generation of communicators, promising to provide communications between phones without needing an Internet connection or any other data connection. Let’s take a deeper look at how it works.
The Mesh technologyWireless mesh networks are a recent and emerging technology, which promises to revolutionize the way we connect with each other, as they can easily (and wirelessly) connect entire cities using inexpensive and existing technology. Usually they work through a series of wired access points or wireless hotspots that connect users. In this type of network, the connection is spread through several wireless mesh nodes that communicate between them to share the connection across larger areas.
These nodes are small radio transmitters working just like a wireless router, and they use the common WiFi standards 802.11a, b and g to communicate with each other and the users. The nodes are programmed so that the information travels from the point A to B in the shortest and quickest way possible, in a process known as dynamic routing.
FireChatWith FireChat, you can communicate with others with Instant Messaging and share files from an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and see what people around you are chatting about. As I explained before, it works even without an Internet or other mobile connection, making it perfect for communicating everywhere (obviously, “everywhere” where mesh technology is available). It is also a very easy-to-use app, as it does not require any kind of login or password, and does not place any significant impact on your battery’s life.
The app itself has a neat design, actually very similar to the native messaging platform from iOS. When you open the app, you are randomly added to the “Everyone” section – on FireChat’s first days, this “Everyone” section was unlimited in terms of users, but Open Garden (the company behind it) had to put a cap limiting the users to 80 for each group. So, when you enter “Everyone”, the app adds you to a random group of people near you and, if and when that group reaches a total of 80 users, that group is automatically closed.
Given that FireChat is an anonymous and ephemeral chatting service, you should not expect to have, at least in bigger groups, great talks and discussions, and the more you use it, the more this feature might start to seem useless. However, in the case of natural disasters, great accidents or meltdowns of the other social media and apps, FireChat and all the technology supporting it might prove to be vital and, really, the only chance to communicate. This app can change the way we communicate, not the communication itself – and that is surely not its goal.
FireChat is free to download from the App Store. If you have any of the Apple devices I mentioned above, be sure to give it a try.

Can Chatgpt Create An App?
Last Updated on June 7, 2023
As a prominent example of a sophisticated artificial intelligence-powered language model, it’s often asked whether ChatGPT can create an app. Developed by OpenAI, this AI chatbot can help generate content and even programming codes with only a short prompt needed to get it going. As ChatGPT’s capabilities evolve and develop, questions arise about how much it can be leveraged and what tasks it can successfully perform.
While ChatGPT can create lines of code, can it make a complete app? Let’s find out what sort of role ChatGPT can play in the mobile app development process.
How to Use ChatGPT for Creating an AppChatGPT can be used across three parts of a software development roadmap. We will go through all three of these implementation instances.

Planning the AppThe user interface plays a vital role in an app’s success. It has to be simple enough that users can navigate it easily, but it also has to be engaging enough to keep users coming back.
ChatGPT can help you plan the user interface of the app. You can ask it for tips on how to get started. The tool will give you information and tips like understanding your target audience, compatibility requirements for different platforms such as ios or Android, defining goals, creating a user template, and much more.
Building the CodeChatGPT is a language model powered by natural language processing and is therefore optimized to generate human-like text. However, you can use it to write code for you instead of having it answer questions. Moreover, ChatGPT’s machine learning engine is also trained on large datasets in multiple programming languages. So you can get your code in JavaScript, Python, Ruby on Rails, and many more.
Remember that while ChatGPT will try to be as accurate as possible, it’s not specialized for generating code, so you may find some errors in your output. So it is always best to make your chatGPT prompts as specific as possible and always be sure to check the code, ask the engine about any code you have queries with, and fix any errors if they arise.
Deploying Your AppOnce the code is ready, you can copy and paste it into your coding software or platform. Based on your chosen coding environment, you might have to make some fundamental changes to your code.
For instance, you must create a repository and initiate the coding commands to build an app on GitHub. Next, you will have to fetch the libraries you want. On the other hand, if you select a pre-built Integrated Development Environment (IDE), the libraries might be auto-fetched.
Can ChatGPT Create an Entire App?While ChatGPT can write code in different programming languages, it would be far-stretched to say that you can build a complete application. The best you can do with ChatGPT is create small individual modules of an application. Once they are ready, you can combine them in the coding environment to make them function together. This makes it one of many invaluable resources that you can utilize as part of your mobile application design process.
Social Media Messaging For Success On Every Platform
To date, there are 3.8 billion active social media users.
That’s a ton of people (more than half the world’s population!).
Which gets us thinking, “social media is a huge platform to market our brand.”
But wait. ✋
Stop right there.
A sentence like that could be the reason you’re not succeeding on your social platforms.
Because the truth is, social media isn’t a single channel.
It’s made up of separate, individual platforms with different audiences.
And each audience has its own unique desires, habits, and goals.
So the next time you’re thinking of copying your FB post and pasting it on LinkedIn…
…don’t do it.
To succeed in social media marketing, you need to deeply understand each platform’s audience, then craft a unique message that speaks to them.
Ready to do that now?
Let’s dive in.
Understanding the Audience of Each Social Media Platform (Plus: What to Do to Reach Them)Think back to the past.
I mean, way back. Before you were a marketer, entrepreneur, or educator.
Which social platform did you use?
Facebook, maybe, to keep up with your friends’ vacation news.
Or Instagram, if you love visual art.
Or maybe it was Pinterest, especially if you’re the creative type searching for inspiring ideas.
And when you started looking for a job or business contacts, I bet you signed up for LinkedIn.
See?
Not all social platforms are created equal.
Here’s how they’re unique.
1. FacebookFacebook is the largest social platform with over 2.7 billion users.
This means it’s a platform founded on the goal to form meaningful connections with other people.
In fact, it’s #1 mission is: to bring the world closer together.
Here’s another stat that proves Facebook is a platform for connections:
Eighty-eight percent of Facebook users go on the platform to keep contact with family and friends.
How to reach people on Facebook:
Focus on building connections.
There’s a ton of ways to do this but one that stands out is creating a living, breathing community of like-minded people.
Just go to Facebook and search in the “groups” section. What you’ll find thousands of groups, depending on what keyword you use to search.
For instance, check out the results for the keyword “fitness.”
Creating your own group is a powerful way to build your authority and grow your reach.
But even if you decide not to, keep this in mind each time your brand posts on Facebook:
Avoid spammy sales language at all costs. Speak to your ideal clients like friends and family.
Connect deeply with them. Help them.
Build lasting relationships with them.
By following this rule, you’ll avoid turning Facebook users off as they visit the platform to connect with friends and loved ones.
2. InstagramQuestion: what do you do when you’re dreaming of a dip in the ocean, but you can’t go for a swim right now?
If you’re like me, you’d live the pleasure of sand and saltwater in your head.
To do that?
You need a stunning photo of the beach.
And the best place to get it is Instagram, a platform built to allow users to share gorgeous digital photos.
Yup, the pictures on Instagram are stunning.
Just check this out.
And this.
And this.
Now, here’s the exciting part.
Instagram has over a billion active monthly users.
When you learn about its audience and their desires, you’ll reach a ton of engaged followers.
How to market on Instagram:
Lead with unique, attention-grabbing photos.
Notice the most popular influencers on Instagram?
Yup.
They say everything they want to say with fewer words and more gorgeous photos.
3. LinkedInAs I mentioned, you probably didn’t have a LinkedIn account as a kid.
I bet you signed up for one when you were ready to showcase your skills and attract a boss or client.
Because unlike other social platforms, LinkedIn is about business connections.
It’s like a huge business event packed with entrepreneurs, educators, marketers, and influencers from across the globe.
Sounds genius, right?
It is.
And while it’s smaller than the other social media platforms out there, its 722+ million members are all business.
For example, check out James Altucher’s profile.
How to reach people on LinkedIn:
If you’re on LinkedIn, you already know it’s not the best place for your adorable cat videos.
But you need to go deeper than simply deleting your Gen Z-toned posts.
Take a look at your connections.
What are they looking for?
What do they need?
Nine times out of ten, it’ll be business ideas, people to hire to grow their team, networking connections, and outsourcing options.
And if you create helpful, authoritative content that speaks to their needs, you will get noticed.
4. TwitterTwitter is an essential tool for building a community through social sharing.
And unlike Facebook and Instagram, the shorter your message, the better. (Besides, you can’t write long-form content with a 280-character limit! 😉)
Here’s what a great Twitter post looks like. As you’ll notice, it’s short, meaningful, and memorable.
How to reach people on Twitter:
Infuse your posts with personality. Remember, you don’t have a ton of space to catch attention. Use every word wisely.
Don’t be late on news that’s important to your followers. The sooner you post hot news, the more retweets you’ll get.
5. YouTubeQuick question: where do you go to learn how to cook keto cheese bread?
Or play a Taylor Swift song on your new guitar?
Or braid your daughter’s hair for prom night?
If your answer is YouTube, you’re just like me (and the other 2 billion users on the platform).
Because here’s the thing: YouTube is all about learning the fun way. It’s also packed with entertainment, for those dull moments in life when you just need a laugh.
Want proof that YouTube users love the “info-tainment?”
Take Rhett and Link of Good Mythical Morning.
Ever since their first humorous “Mega Tater” videos, they’ve amassed a huge following of 16.8 million subscribers.
And while their content is educational (at times 😉), it’s the laughter they bring that keeps subscribers glued to their channel.
How to reach people on YouTube:
Be helpful and show your worth. But most of all, be entertaining.
People don’t treat YouTube like school. They get on the platform to smile, cry, laugh, and have their hearts touched.
6. PinterestEver plan a room renovation, and find out you had no idea how to do it?
What paints matched? What color furniture would you buy? How about the rugs, pictures, and curtains?
If you’ve ever felt confused like this, you probably went to Pinterest for ideas.
I mean, who wouldn’t be inspired by a post like the one below?
That’s the beauty of Pinterest.
You can go there and find inspiration for anything.
Want to wrap your gifts beautifully for Christmas or Valentine’s Day?
Go to Pinterest.
Want to braid your friend’s hair like a Celtic woman’s?
Go to Pinterest.
Out of marketing ideas?
Yup.
Pinterest has something for that, too.
That’s why we (and its 322 million other users) adore it.
So, how do you engage people on Pinterest?
How to reach people on Pinterest:
Pinterest is a largely visual platform, so be ready with your quality photos and videos. Do something more than just wow your audience.
Inspire them.
Show them how to do what they want to do, and do it well.
How to Pick the Social Channel That’s Right for YouI know, that was a lot.
Right now, your head might be spinning.
“How on earth can I create all that content?” 🤷♀️
Well, here’s good news for you.
You don’t have to.
You don’t have to jump from one platform to the next, staying up until three in the morning just to put the finishing touches on your 30 different posts.
All you have to do?
Pick one platform and focus 100% on it.
If your brand is all about connections, pick Facebook.
If you create trendy, info-tainment videos, pick YouTube.
If you love visuals and you can portray your brand in stunning photos, pick Instagram.
And so on.
When you’ve chosen, focus on giving people on the platform exactly what they signed up for.
You’ll be surprised at the sudden spike in engagement you’ll get.

Instant High Contrast Black And White Photos With Photoshop
Instant High Contrast Black and White Photos with Photoshop
Learn how to turn your images to high contrast black and white with Photoshop using Gradient Maps, the fastest and easiest way to create great looking B&W photos!
Written by Steve Patterson.
In this tutorial, I show you how to instantly convert photos to high contrast black and white in Photoshop using a Gradient Map. There are lots of ways to convert images to black and white, but Gradient Maps are one of the best because they are so fast and easy to use, and they give us great results. I’ll show you how to use a Gradient Map, and I’ll show you the secret to why Gradient Maps give black and white photos such a high contrast look.
Here’s an example of what the final high contrast black and white effect will look like when we’re done:
The final result.
Let’s get started!
Download this tutorial as a print-ready PDF!
Which version of Photoshop do I need?I used Photoshop 2023 but any recent version will work. Get the latest Photoshop version.
The document setupI’ll use this image from Adobe Stock:
The original photo.
Gradient Maps vs Photoshop’s Desaturate commandWe’ll start with the Desaturate command. In the Layers panel, the image appears on the Background layer:
Photoshop’s Layers panel.
Make a copy of the Background layer by dragging it down onto the New Layer icon:
Dragging the Background layer onto the New Layer icon.
And rename it Desaturated. Press Enter (Win) / Return (Mac) to accept it:
Renaming the layer Desaturated.
To remove the color, go up to the Image menu in the Menu Bar, then to Adjustments:
And choose the Desaturate command:
Choosing Desaturate.
Photoshop instantly removes the color from the image, leaving it in black and white.
But the result is not very impressive. There are no dark shadows or bright highlights to give it that high contrast look we’d expect from a great black and white image. Instead, it just looks like what it is; an image with no color:
The black and white result using the Desaturate command.
How to convert an image to B&W with a Gradient MapSo let’s compare the result from the Desaturate command to what we get using a Gradient Map.
Turning off the Desaturated layer.
Step 1: Reset Photoshop’s Foreground and Background colorsBefore adding the Gradient Map, make sure in the toolbar that your Foreground and Background colors are set to their defaults, with black for the Foreground and white for the Background:
The Foreground and Background colors.
Step 2: Add a Gradient Map adjustment layerAnd choose a Gradient Map adjustment layer from the list:
Adding a Gradient Map adjustment layer.
And instantly, we get a much higher contrast black and white image, with darker shadows, brighter highlights and more overall detail:
The black and white result using the Gradient Map.
Comparing the resultsHere’s a side-by-side comparison of the results from the Desaturate command (left) and the Gradient Map (right).
It’s easy to see how much better the Gradient Map’s black and white version looks, even though it took the same amount of time. The higher contrast makes the image pop, with more detail in his face and hair, and more obvious textures in his sweater and in the background:
The Desaturate command (left) and the Gradient Map (right).
How Gradient Maps convert images to black and whiteSo why are Gradient Maps so good at creating high contrast black and white images? There’s really two reasons. And the first is because of how a Gradient Map works.
I cover Gradient Maps in much more detail in another tutorial where we learn how to color grade images with Gradient Maps. But long story short, a Gradient Map takes the original colors in your image and replaces them with the colors from a gradient.
In the Properties panel, we see the gradient that the Gradient Map is using. And by default, it’s based on our Foreground and Background colors, which is why we reset them to black and white:
Photoshop’s Properties panel showing the gradient.
Gradient Maps replace colors based on their brightness. So because we’re using a black to white gradient, the darkest colors in the image are being replaced with black or dark gray. The brightest colors are now white or light gray. And the colors with their brightness somewhere in the middle are now a shade of gray from the midtones in the gradient:
The original colors are replaced with the gradient colors based on their brightness.
Why do Gradient Maps create high contrast images? So that’s why the image was converted to black and white when we added the Gradient Map. But why does the black and white image have such high contrast? Why is the contrast with the Gradient Map not only higher than the desaturated version, but even higher than the original image? The reason is because of an option found in the Gradient Editor.
Opening the Gradient Editor The Smoothness optionAnd here in the Gradient Editor, just above the gradient preview bar, is an option called Smoothness. By default, Smoothness is set to 100 percent. And that means that Photoshop is trying to smooth out the transitions between the different colors, or in this case the different shades of gray, in the gradient:
The Smoothness option in the Gradient Editor.
How Smoothness affects contrastBut this smoothing feature also increases the contrast in the gradient. It’s enhancing the difference between the dark and light tones by pushing darker tones more towards black and lighter tones closer to white. And this is what’s giving us that higher contrast look with our black and white image.
Watch what happens to the image if we lower the Smoothness down to 0 percent:
Lowering Smoothness to 0 percent.
Suddenly we lose the higher contrast, and the black and white image now looks more like the result from the Desaturate command:
Lowering the Smoothness value lowers the contrast.
But when I increase the Smoothness back to 100 percent, the higher contrast returns:
Increasing the Smoothness value increases the contrast.
Expanding and contracting the shadows and highlightsIf you pay attention to the gradient preview bar as you increase and decrease the Smoothness value, you can actually see what’s happening to the gradient. Notice how far the darkest shades on the left and the brightest shades on the right are extending inward towards the midtones with Smoothness set to 100 percent:
The shadows and highlights expand with Smoothness at 100 percent.
But as you lower the Smoothness value, those darkest and lightest shades get pushed back toward the edges, which brightens up the midtones. And at 0 percent smoothness, we get a more natural transition from black to white:
The shadows and highlights contract with Smoothness at 0 percent.
Without smoothing, the Gradient Map (right) looks closer to the desaturated image (left).
The result with Smoothness reset to 100 percent.
Summary
And there we have it! But Gradient Maps can do so much more than convert images to black and white. They’re also great for adding creative color effects to your images, which you can learn all about in my Color Grading with Gradient Maps tutorial.
If you found this lesson helpful, be sure to check out my other Photo Effects and Photo Editing tutorials. And don’t forget, all of my Photoshop tutorials are now available to download as PDFs!
Peloton Launches An Apple Watch App Along With A Truly Bizarre Ad
Peloton has grown in popularity over the years, and now it finally has an Apple Watch app.
Launched today, Peloton finally added an Apple Watch app to help those exercising reach their goals. Of course, Peloton covers all sorts of workouts, and, as such, the Peloton Apple Watch app makes it possible to track your heart rate “in all workouts” and keep track of your pace and distance “during indoor runs”.
Runners will especially benefit from the app with all-new pace and distance metrics that will be displayed both on your Watch and iPhone during indoor runs. What’s more, all of your workouts will benefit since your Watch will now act as a heart rate monitor, displaying your heart rate on both your Watch and iPhone. This way, you can see how hard you’re working as you move within zones. And since all of these metrics will be saved, after class you’ll be able to see detailed graphs to capture your efforts.
The Peloton Watch App also makes it easy to glance at your metrics during class – or just see how much time is left in your workout. Plus, you can turn up the music by adjusting the Digital Crown.
It’s certainly not feature heavy, but it’s a start.
In addition to that, Peloton also launched an app for Amazon‘s Fire TV.
In it, we get to see a woman who is already fit given the gift of a Peloton stationary bike. Okay. That’s fine. As the ad continues we see the gift-receiver, who turns out to be Grace from Boston, record herself on the stationary bike. Eventually, things get weird.
As the ad wraps up we discover that Grace was stitching those shorter video clips together to make a longer one, which she then uses to thank her significant other for the gift.
As noted by Vox today, it feels very strange. And, aptly, like a twisted fairy tale where the gift giver believes that the already fit significant other needs to be even more fit. So why not get a stationary bike to help out! Yes, this ad does make it seem like Grace from Boston is not getting “more fit” for herself, but rather her significant other.
It’s an odd ad! So take a look!
Here’s Peloton’s statement to CNBC regarding the ad and the feedback the company has received for it:
We constantly hear from our members how their lives have been meaningfully and positively impacted after purchasing or being gifted a Peloton Bike or Tread, often in ways that surprise them. Our holiday spot was created to celebrate that fitness and wellness journey. While we’re disappointed in how some have misinterpreted this commercial, we are encouraged by — and grateful for — the outpouring of support we’ve received from those who understand what we were trying to communicate.
For the record, it’s not inherently bad to get a Peloton bike as a gift! But maybe somewhere in the ad we could have found out that the Peloton bike in question was a gift that Grace from Boston actually wanted, rather than just something her partner wanted to give her.

Robinhood is a trading app for Android and iOS mobiles that provides users with commission-free trading tools for analyzing markets and investing in shares.
However, the Robinhood app doesn’t always work as expected for some users. If you can’t open and utilize the Robinhood app, check out the resolutions below.
What can I do if the Robinhood app is not working or loading?Android
Open Google Play on your mobile device.
Then tap the menu button in Google Play.
Tap the Update all button. Alternatively, you can tap the Update option more specifically for Robinhood.
Apple iOS
To update Robinhood on Apple mobiles, open the App Store.
Next, tap your profile icon at the top right of the app.
Tap the Update option for the Robinhood app.
Clear the app’s cache data
Tap Settings.
Next, tap Apps in Settings.
Select the listed Robinhood app.
Then press the Storage button to open data options.
Restart your mobile device.
My app seems frozen (reinstall Robinhood)Android
Tap Settings.
Next, select your Robinhood app; and tap the Uninstall option for it.
To reinstall Robinhood, open its Google Play page. Then you can select the Install option there.
Apple iOS
On iOS 13 iPhones, you’ll need to tap and hold the Robinhood app until it starts to shake (or jiggle).
Select the Edit Home Screen option.
Next, select Robinhood’s X option to erase that app.
Press the Home button, and open the Apple App Store.
Open Robinhood’s app page, and select the Get option.
Robinhood website not workingThe Robinhood web app has a history of outages. In March 2023, there was a system-wide Robinhood outage that impacted both the web and mobile apps.
So, you shouldn’t be entirely surprised if the Robinhood website isn’t working because of a server issue of some kind.
To check if Robinhood is down, open the Downdetector page for it. That tells you if there are any confirmed issues (outages) for Robinhood for your selected country. If there’s an outage, you’ll just have to wait for that to get fixed.
In addition to that, try opening the Robinhood website in an alternative browser. Open Robinhood in Google Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge if you’re utilizing an alternative browser. Those are the three supported browsers for Robinhood.
So, the best thing to do when Robinhood isn’t working is to update the app, clear its cached data, and reinstall it.
If that’s not enough, however, you could also try utilizing Robinhood on your desktop or laptop with an Android emulator.
