Response and Ways to Use It

Remember, with Glance Plus you are not going to have the display on all the time; it will only light up when you want it to. There is option, called Always-On, leaves the panel always active but only if your device is charging, whether it’s a USB port, AC charge or wireless charge.

You also have the option of having the display turn on only in certain moments and for a certain amount of time that goes from five seconds to two minutes. There is also the option of activating the app when you pass your hand over the sensor once, twice or three times. If you want the app to enable itself after you have blocked your device, you can do that also.

This is a good app to try if you are tired of being blinded by the brightness of your device’s display. During the day it can look fine, but at night it’s the worst. When you first open the app and scroll down just a tad, you will also see an option that allows you to inactivate the app for the time periods you want.

The best way to troubleshoot a computer is to start with easy fixes that only take a few moments. If these fixes don’t help restore the picture to your display, you might have to test some of your computer’s components. 

Restart the Computer

One of the first things you should do is make sure your computer is completely restarted. Sometimes when you think your computer is off, it is actually still on in a low-power state to speed up startups. Powering the computer down all the way ensures that when you restart it, it’s a truly fresh start.

To restart your computer completely, press down on the computer’s power button. Hold it down for five seconds before releasing it. Let the computer fully startup before you continue troubleshooting. 

Check the Connections

Reset your Monitor

Resetting the monitor will ensure that you don’t have strange settings incompatible with the computer selected. The method will vary depending on what monitor you have. 

Make sure the input is selected for the computer. If you’ve changed what wires you’re using to connect the monitor to the computer, you might also need to change the input settings. 

When the monitor is set to default, restart your computer and see whether it grabs a connection. 

Check your Peripheral Devices

Unplug anything unnecessary from the computer, like extra monitors, external drives, or USB hubs. 

Restart the computer with a single monitor plugged in. If the screen is still black, try switching the cable that connects the monitor to another one. Try plugging it in with a different cable type or to a different port in your computer.

Once you know the monitor is working, the cable is suitable, and your computer doesn’t have one flawed connector, it’s time to start thinking about what else might have failed for the monitor to display a black screen. 

Change the RAM

Try removing all the RAM from your computer, inserting one stick into a slot, and booting with that single stick inserted. If that doesn’t work, try another stick in the same slot. 

Try one stick in a different slot if it still doesn’t work. With this method, you’re trying to find damaged slots or damaged RAM sticks. If it starts and works with a single RAM stick in a specific place, you might have damaged RAM, or your slots are damaged. 

Test Your Power Supply

Even when the power supply appears to be working, it can fall victim to errors that prevent all computer parts from receiving sufficient power.

Consider getting a power supply tester if you frequently work with computers. It’s a safer and easier way to test a PSU than using a multimeter.

Unplug and open your computer.

Remove any power cables going from the PSU into other components. It shouldn’t be connected to anything when you’re done.

Check the voltage switch on the PSU to make sure it’s correct. The setting for US computers is 110V/115V.

Plugin the larger power connector and one of the smaller ones, depending on the model you’re using.

Plug your PSU into a wall outlet. Turn the power on if it’s a model with a switch.

Turn the power supply tester on and refer to the screen on the device. If the screen isn’t turning on, the power supply is bad.

Check to make sure none of the numbers say LL or HH. That means the power supply is bad and needs to be replaced. 

Check your power supply tester manual against the voltages reported on the screen. Make sure they’re within the correct limits for your PSU. If the numbers are out of the acceptable range or the delay value is not 100-500ms, you should replace the power supply.

Check the other cables, if necessary. It depends on what model PSU you’re using and what power cables extend from it. 

Listen for Beep Codes

Some computers make sounds when something is wrong with the system. These beep codes help you troubleshoot and fix any problems preventing it from working correctly.

Power on the computer.

Listen for the beep codes.

Write down how many beeps there were, whether they were fast or slow and whether the code repeated. It’s okay if you have to turn on the computer a few times to catch the code perfectly.

Refer to a manual or reference for your BIOS model to determine what is causing the beep code.

Recognizing the cause of a beep code isn’t the end of the problem because you still have to fix whatever caused it. However, it’s a great starting point for finding the source of the problem.

Clear your CMOS

Clearing your CMOS battery on your motherboard will reset BIOS to default. If a problem with your BIOS settings prevents your computer from displaying an image on your monitor, clearing the CMOS should fix it.

Shut down the computer and disconnect the power.

Press the power button on the computer three times.

Locate the CMOS battery on the motherboard.

Remove it from the socket.

The best way to check your GPU is to hook it into another computer to which you have access. See whether that computer boots. If it does, run a stress test on the GPU.

Download a program like 3dMark, Unigine Heaven, or FurMark and use it to make sure your GPU is working as intended.

If the GPU isn’t working right, you can try disassembling it, cleaning it, putting on a new thermal paste, and then reassembling it. Sometimes that can help manage the temperatures and keep the GPU more stable.

If your CPU isn’t seated perfectly or isn’t as cool as it should be, it might cause errors that prevent your computer from displaying an image.

When BU Today talked to Sam Sokolow last year, he was awaiting the premiere of the National Geographic TV channel series Genius. Sokolow (COM’91) is an executive producer of the series.

The show, starring Geoffrey Rush as Albert Einstein, went over big, drawing large audiences in 175 countries and earning strong reviews. The Guardian called it “a sassy, robust ride: whiplash-smart and littered with imaginative visual connections.” The series also earned 10 Emmy nominations.

Now a second season of Genius is about to debut, this time focusing on Pablo Picasso and starring Antonio Banderas as arguably the 20th century’s most important artist. The show premieres on National Geographic on April 24, but before that Solokow returns to BU tomorrow to screen the first-season pilot of Genius and show the trailer for the second season as part of the Cinemathèque series, a College of Communication program that brings accomplished filmmakers to campus to show and discuss their work. (His contract prohibits showing a new episode before the premiere.)

Sokolow says the response to the first season was everything he could have hoped for. “It was my first Emmy nomination,” he says. “To be nominated for best limited series, when the other nominees included Big Little Lies and Fargo and The Night Of—to me these are the best shows on television, and to be in a category with them was an honor that I’ll cherish forever. I was just so proud of the show.”

The COM grad is also living the dream in other ways. “I just left a breakfast meeting in West Los Angeles, and I’m driving to Beverly Hills, where my office is, on a 75-degree day,” he says in a phone interview. “Then I have to run up to Hollywood for lunch with a director. It’s almost a caricature.”

Sokolow credits BU with helping him get his start, which included shooting commercials and working on game shows and series development. He got involved with Genius because his production company, EUE/Sokolow Entertainment, owned the film rights to Walter Isaacson’s 2008 book, Einstein: His Life and Universe. Sokolow was instrumental in pushing to make it a TV series rather than a movie.

It takes a special kind of genius to carry 10 hours of TV, and choosing a subject for the second season required a lot of research.

The company started looking at inventor Nikola Tesla, who designed a system to deliver electricity.

“He may have been brilliant and had phenomenal discoveries that affected our lives, and he may have had business dealings that were dramatic,” Sokolow says, “but he was a workaholic and for the most part went to the same restaurant and ate the same thing for dinner every night at a table for one.”

Picasso was more promising. An innovator who lived a life set against major historical moments, he completely changed his discipline, and he also has a global brand.

“And he has 10 hours of story to tell,” says Sokolow. “Picasso certainly lived a dramatic life that at times could be akin to a primetime soap opera.”

And once the producers learned that Banderas was from Picasso’s hometown of Malaga, Spain, there was little doubt about who would play the artist. “Just that itself, from a cultural perspective and a language perspective, an understanding-of-the-world perspective, makes him such a rich choice,” Sokolow says. “From what I understand, this is a role and a character he has been interested in since he started acting.”

He says showrunner Kenneth Biller and executive producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer have formed a sort of repertory company, not just with respect to the crew, which is normal, but also for some of the cast members: both Johnny Flynn and Samantha Colley return in different roles this season. Howard also directed the season opener, which was shot in Budapest, Malaga, Paris, and Malta.

Although National Geographic has not formally committed to a third season, Sokolow is confident that it will. And while his team hasn’t decided who the third genius will be, they have decided that it will be a woman.

In the meantime, they have plenty on their plate. EUE/Sokolow Entertainment just closed a deal to turn “a really significant contemporary American novel” into a premium television series, and they are working on another series set in the multicultural Latino community of Miami.

Sam Sokolow speaks and screens an episode of his National Geographic series, Genius, tomorrow, Friday, April 13, at 7 pm, at the College of Communication, Room 101, 640 Commonwealth Ave. The event, part of the BU Cinemathèque series, is free and open to the public.
