If you purchased a new smartphone from Verizon Wireless between November 26, 2010 and January 10, 2011, you should be eligible for a $200 credit towards an iPhone 4 upgrade. This credit should be available as long as your purchase the iPhone on Verizon before February 28.

Q: If I’m an existing Verizon Wireless customer and not currently eligible for an upgrade, will Verizon Wireless offer any special programs to allow upgrades to iPhone at a reduced price?

Q: If I’m an existing Verizon Wireless customer and I’m eligible for an annual upgrade, will I have to pay the standard $20 early upgrade fee to purchase iPhone 4?

A: No, if you are currently eligible for an annual upgrade, the standard $20 early upgrade fee will be waived for customers purchasing iPhone 4 until the end of March.

Q: I just purchased a new smartphone during the holiday season, but if I knew that iPhone 4 was going to be available soon I would have waited. What are my options now?

It’s pretty cool that Verizon is able to offer such a promotion for the launch of the iPhone on its network. AT&T hasn’t really had any luck with offering promotions or bundle deals since they introduced the iPhone on their network almost five years ago.

Verizon is probably taking the financial hit for such a promotion. I highly doubt Apple would ever give any similar type of offer to a carrier. But with all the traffic that the iPhone will bring to Verizon in the U.S., it’s not hard to see why the network would want to try and muster spirit around the product’s launch as much as it can.

A couple other interesting facts from the FAQ:

“Q: Can I go to an Apple store to purchase and activate the phone?

A: Yes, beginning on February 10th, you can visit an Apple Retail store to purchase and activate. However, prior to visiting, please make sure to check your upgrade eligibility if you are an existing Verizon Wireless customer.

Q: I am an existing customer that upgraded my device between 11/26/10 and 1/10/11. I would like to exchange my upgrade for an iPhone but my return/exchange deadline is prior to the iPhone launch. What can I do?

A: You would need to return the device that you purchased in accordance with our standard return policies and reactivate your original device. A restocking fee of $35 ($70 for netbooks and tablets) would apply. You will then be eligible to upgrade to the iPhone when it becomes available for purchase.”

4 Gmail Labs Features You Should Be Using

Authentication icon for verified senders

Email scammers continue to devise nefarious new ways to trick people into surrendering money and personal information. While there’s no substitute for following basic security practices, you can add an extra layer of protection with Gmail Lab’s Authentication Icon for Verified Senders.

When you enable this lab, you’ll see a key icon next to “trusted” senders such as PayPal and Google Wallet. Google deems senders trustworthy if they send a lot of messages over time that most Gmail users think are not spam; and if they publish a DMARC reject policy, which states they send only authenticated mail, and any unauthenticated mail sent by the domain should be rejected.

Once you enable Undo Send, configure your cancellation period on the General Settings tab.

This feature will delay sending your email messages 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds, giving you a grace period during which you can hit an “undo” button and prevent your missive from going out. Once you’ve enabled it, just set your “cancellation period” on the General tab under Settings.

How we chose the best routers for Verizon Fios

Before becoming part of Popular Science’s commerce team, I covered gadgets and gear, including routers, for sites like TechnoBuffalo, XDA Developers, and CNN Underscored. I’ve set up several routers and mesh networks for work over the years, including many on Fios, which has been my home internet service provider since 2024.

To make our selections, I drew on that experience, as well as PopSci’s many guides to buying the best routers right now. Of course, I also cross-checked each recommendation for compatibility with Fios, considered industry guides, and read under impressions to better understand what’s available.

Understanding Verizon Fios

Fios is the home internet division of Verizon and runs exclusively on fiber-optic cable. Fiber optics use pulses of light to send data through tiny strands of transparent material like glass or plastic, carrying data directly to your device. Fiber’s often considered superior to cable because it’s more resilient to lag and buffering.

Depending on your location, Fios offers up to 940 Mbps download speeds and 880 Mbps upload speeds, which should allow for a very connected home to do lots of streaming for work or play, gaming, and manage a network of smart home devices. Often the downside to Fios is availability. Though it is available nationally, Fios isn’t available everywhere. You can always go to the Fios website to see if you can get service in your home or to request it.

Things to consider when buying the best routers for Verizon Fios

Like most internet service providers, Verizon will happily provide you with a router, which doesn’t require an extra free on your monthly bill. There’s nothing that says you have to use that router though. In fact, if you’re willing to pay some money upfront, the best routers offer a much better range and support for more devices.

Technically, any router should be compatible with Verizon’s internet hookup. In order to make sure you can get the most out of Fios’ best plan, we looked for routers that can support up to 1 Gbps of bandwidth. We also considered dual-band and tri-band routers that support more recent Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 standards.

Picking the best routers for Verizon Fios can get complicated quickly. Router specs lean heavily on industry jargon. It can be confusing and frustrating for even the most seasoned technophiles. We’ll walk you through the basics, so you can pick the right router for your home setup.

Speed and wireless protocol

You should also pay close attention to what wireless-fidelity protocol your router supports. There are many versions of Wi-Fi, which are noted by various wireless protocols or, more recently, by the numbered Wi-Fi standard. The protocol determines your router’s range and throughput, which measures data speeds on your local network, along with other updates and optimizations. The wireless protocol is written out as the number 802.11, followed by a string of numbers and letters. (You really only need to worry about the letters.) The Wi-Fi standard, which comes in simpler variations like “Wi-Fi 5” and “Wi-Fi 6,” indicates the same set of specs and optimizations.

Newer, more expensive routers are usually capable of supporting the newest versions, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, but you will also likely find older models out there limited to older, slower versions. Networking standards are backward compatible, so a Wi-Fi 6 router will connect to devices designed with older Wi-Fi standards in mind. Here’s a little breakdown of what the more recent standards offer:

11ax (Wi-Fi 6E): Wi-Fi 6E opens support for the 6 GHz band, which promises even faster speeds and less network congestion over short distances. Once Wi-Fi 6E becomes more widespread across home networks and personal devices, you should never run into buffering during a Zoom call again.

11ax (Wi-Fi 6): Wi-Fi 6 is the newest standard and delivers speeds up to 10 Gbps, which not many devices and internet connections support. Wi-Fi 6 also features improvements that help it maintain higher speeds across many devices at once. Previous Wi-Fi generations often struggle to stay speedy when several devices are streaming simultaneously. For more on the basics of Wi-Fi protocols, check out our Wi-Fi 6 explainer.

11ac (Wi-Fi 5): This is the standard found in most modern routers and supports speeds up to 3.5 Gbps. 

11n (Wi-Fi 4): This is the slowest standard and supports speeds up to 600 Mbps. It was the first to allow both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies (more on that below).

If possible, we recommend buying a router that supports one of the newest Wi-Fi standards. Not only will you get the best possible connection, but Wi-Fi 6 routers are better equipped to handle congested networks, which often slows down home networks.

Frequency bands and channels

Frequency bands are a range of radio wavelengths that transmit data over a wireless spectrum. With regard to wireless routers, frequency bands are effectively communication channels for your router to transmit data between your modem and devices.

Most routers feature 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands; the higher the frequency, the faster the data transmission rate. Unfortunately, higher frequency bands feature shorter signal ranges, so you need to be closer to your router for the fastest, most reliable connection.

Using 2.4 GHz frequencies sends data a little slower, but offers a better range (150 indoors and 300 feet outdoors). At 5 GHz, data moves faster, over a shorter range. The connection is also more susceptible to interference from walls and other solid objects. New high-end Wi-Fi 6E routers also offer a third frequency band, 6 GHz, which offers even faster speeds, at the expense of stability and range.

Most routers feature either dual-band or tri-band radio functionality, giving your devices either two or three channels to make a connection. Dual-band routers usually feature a 2.4 GHz band and 5 GHz band, ensuring they can connect to any Wi-Fi device. Tri-band routers usually add a second 5 GHz channel, minimizing congestion over the faster frequency.

We recommend a tri-band router for large home networks with many devices that stay connected to the internet around the clock. The extra band will allow more devices to connect to your network without any noticeable dips in speed. Be warned: Tri-band functionality is a luxury feature normally reserved for more expensive routers.


Buying a router with a higher maximum distance can improve signal strength in your home, but it isn’t always the best solution. If you’re having trouble getting a connection in a specific room or area of your home, a Wi-Fi extender can boost your signal just enough to improve that specific issue. If you need to cover a very large area, or experience connection issues even when you’re relatively close to your router, you may benefit from using a mesh Wi-Fi system, which generates Wi-Fi from multiple devices.

Before buying any new gear, you should try repositioning your router to a centralized location in your home, on an open shelf away from any walls. (Don’t hide your router in a cabinet or TV stand!) Depending on the situation, you may find that optimizing your setup improves things enough to make an upgrade superfluous. Also, replacing your router won’t help that much if you’re hiding it in a closet.


In the age of Wi-Fi, relying on an Ethernet port might seem old school, but a wired connection provides a consistent, uninterrupted connection at the highest possible speed. As such, we think it’s important to get a router with plenty of additional Ethernet ports so you can connect your most important, bandwidth-hungry devices directly. (I use Ethernet for my PlayStation 5 and Apple TV, for example.) Modern routers typically offer four Ethernet ports, so you may not have to look too hard. Still, we thought it was important enough to highlight, particularly if you plug in your computer for work.


No matter which router you choose, it should provide a consistent connection that doesn’t buckle under the demands of modern living. There’s enough to stress over while working remotely, and we don’t want your internet to be one of them. Whether you go with a 1 Gbps plan on Verizon Fios or something a little slower, the above routers will ensure your Wi-Fi can handle back-to-back video meetings, high-resolution media, and streaming your favorite shows on Netflix.

Should We Be Worried about a Malaria Outbreak in the United States? Malaria has landed in Florida and Texas. BU infectious diseases specialist David Hamer shares his biggest worries when it comes to mosquito-borne diseases—and why malaria might not be the scariest one

When the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) started operations in 1946, it had an urgent mission: prevent malaria from spreading across the United States. Back then, the southern United States was a hot spot for malaria, a potentially deadly infection caused by a parasite spread by Anopheles mosquitoes. The agency started spraying insecticide, waging an all-out war on the insects. 

Their efforts worked. By 1951, the disease was declared eliminated from all states. 

David Hamer, a Boston University School of Public Health professor of global health and a core faculty at the Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases Policy & Research, specializes in vector-borne infectious diseases, including malaria. The disease impacts about half of the world’s population, with the highest numbers in sub-Saharan Africa. He says that although there are very effective treatments, symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening, and children under five years old and pregnant women particularly are at high risk.

The Brink talked with Hamer, who also holds an appointment in infectious diseases at the BU Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, about how malaria likely started to spread in Florida and Texas, protective measures against mosquitoes, and his biggest worries about mosquito-borne diseases, including how climate change is making them more of a threat.

The Brink:

What do we know so far about the cases of malaria in Florida and Texas?

Hamer: This was most likely started with a traveler or recent immigrant coming into the country that was infected with malaria. If it was somebody from an endemic area, they could have had an infection that was very mild or even asymptomatic. To back up a bit, there are four major types of malaria that infect humans. The really bad one is called Plasmodium falciparum, and another prevalent one—the type seen in Florida and Texas recently—is Plasmodium vivax. That one can make people pretty sick and can rarely cause severe disease, but it tends to be not as bad. All six people in Florida have been diagnosed and responded well to treatment. The same is true for the one in Texas. I don’t know any details about these people other than they had not traveled recently, so they had no risk factors for having been in a malaria endemic area outside of the United States. But, clearly, someone came in and had the right phase of the malaria parasite in their blood, mosquitoes fed on them, then [the] mosquito can take a blood meal from another human and transmit malaria to them. The other possibility is that somebody from an endemic area wasn’t treated fully, and had a relapse.

The Brink:

I keep seeing that the United States has about 2,000 cases of malaria every year. Where do those 2,000 cases come from?

Hamer: It’s travelers and immigrants. Mostly, the cases are what we call VFR travelers, people visiting friends and relatives. Those are people that grew up in an area and they’re going back to visit and either don’t think about the need to take malaria prophylaxis to prevent malaria during travel, or feel they don’t need to worry about it. I wrote a paper a couple years ago that showed that VFR travelers are the number one group that acquire malaria during international travel. Anopheles, the species that can transmit malaria, are found in Florida all the way up to Massachusetts. Officials in Florida are now doing an enhanced [insecticide] spraying in Sarasota. So, we have the right mosquitoes, we’ve had them for hundreds of years in the United States. But if you eliminate all human infections with malaria, even with the right mosquitoes, you can’t have malaria transmission.

The Brink:

I only learned recently that malaria was endemic to the United States before the 1950s. How have we managed to stop the spread of malaria and keep it eradicated all this time?

Hamer: In the United States, there is a combination of factors. An important one is simply having screens on windows, because the malaria-carrying mosquitoes tend to bite at dusk and during the night. There have also been various efforts to control mosquito populations that involve spraying insecticides, but there’s potential for environmental toxicity, so widespread spraying isn’t really done. The most important measure is having good treatments. If you eliminate the reservoir of human infections, it doesn’t matter as much what you do with the mosquitoes.

What are malaria treatments like?

Hamer: For most forms of malaria, or at least for Plasmodium falciparum malaria, the more severe type, we use a combination of two drugs taken over the course of three days. It’s very effective and kills the parasites very quickly, so, within 24 hours, people feel better. For Plasmodium vivax malaria, you can use the same combination of drugs, or an older drug called chloroquine, which is not as well tolerated, but works. The vivax malaria has a special characteristic—and this could possibly be how the recent outbreak arose. If you treat it with chloroquine, but don’t follow up with a second drug called Primaquine, then the parasite can hide out in the liver and cause a relapse a few weeks, months, or even a year later. When it comes back, that person may be asymptomatic or become sick, and become infectious to mosquitoes, so the cycle starts over again.

What are efforts to treat and eradicate malaria like in countries where there are high rates of the disease?

Hamer: In endemic areas, there’s anti-vector measures, including the use of insecticide-treated bed nets and applying pesticides on the walls of dwellings in urban and semi-urban areas, [where] once it dries, it’s safe for human contact. The biggest effort is really improving access to effective treatment, like artemisinin-based combination therapy, and trying to make sure people can get diagnosed and treated with effective drugs early. The malaria vaccine will also provide some additional protection, and it’s going to help reduce rates in high-risk populations.

What have the trends been since the vaccine was approved in 2023 ? Has it been available to people enough or made any sort of measurable difference?

That’s a good question. There are a handful of countries, like Ghana and Malawi, that have scaled up the vaccine for use in children. There’s more than one vaccine now, but the main one is called RTS,S. I read recently that several other countries are starting to adopt that. It’s effective, but not great. For children, it gives about 50 percent protection against symptomatic, clinical malaria, and about 70 percent protection against severe disease, which is important. It’s an additional tool for malaria control.

How worried are you about more outbreaks of malaria in the United States?

I’m not very worried. This shows us the potential for malaria to occur here. I think our ability to quickly control an outbreak from malaria is easier than an outbreak of something like dengue or chikungunya, which also spread from mosquitoes.

So, should we be more concerned about dengue and chikungunya?

I’d say dengue and chikungunya are the big vector-borne illnesses to worry about. We have a lot of vectors capable of transmitting these viruses, especially in the Southeastern, South Central, and Southwestern United States. Europe, especially the Mediterranean Basin, has the right mosquitoes. So, all it takes is somebody coming in with dengue, and you can have a local outbreak. Florida has intermittent dengue, and there was a large outbreak of dengue in Cuba last year that contributed to that. Texas has a similar problem with a lot of transmission right around the border with Mexico. There’s some evidence that it’s increased around 400 percent in the last 15 years. So, I think there’s a much greater risk of those two diseases spreading; they’re a little bit harder to diagnose, there’s no specific treatment, and there’s lots of mosquitoes that can transmit them. A recent paper we published highlighted that travelers can get severe disease, and we showed the array of complications.

Is there a higher risk of mosquito-borne illnesses in the United States because of climate change?

Absolutely. We’re going to have more heat and that’s going to facilitate transmission of certain kinds of mosquito-borne diseases. The warmer temperature allows mosquitoes to survive better, but it also changes how quickly either the malaria parasite or the viruses like dengue can mature in the mosquito and be transmissible. And weather patterns are a factor—if there’s a lot more rain and more standing water, then there’ll be more breeding sites for the mosquitoes.

Yep. I think climate change is definitely going to increase our risk of vector-borne disease in the next decade and beyond. People should remember regular anti-mosquito measures, like an effective insect repellent, such as DEET or picaridin, which are different chemicals that are safe. They really reduce the risk of mosquito bites. In the Northeast, we have other diseases like West Nile virus, occasionally Eastern equine encephalitis, that place people at risk during the summer.

Cardano, one of the most promising crypto ecosystems has had a slow start in terms of price. Cardano’s price fell 33.8% in April to $0.76, reaching a market capitalization of $25.5 billion at the end of the month.

This increase in ADA addresses came at a time when Bitcoin fell below $36,000. Usually, when the market moves lower, activity on blockchain networks also falls. Therefore, we should pay close attention to the coming months.

Well, at least for the short period, Cardano did enjoy significant traction among retail investors. Data from IntoTheBlock showed that retail investors in Cardano had increased by close to 190% within the last 30 days. They have been holding the digital token for less than a month.

These addresses now collectively hold 36.14% of the ADA supply. Meanwhile, whales recently reentered an accumulation trend after selling off their holdings over a seven-month period.

Well, this did come as a surprise given that more than 90% of ADA holders witnessed heavy losses. Yet ADA holders have maintained an undeterred narrative.

In an interesting development, Cardano is about to hold two ‘developer events’ in Barcelona and Austin within the next couple of weeks before it commences its hard fork in June.

In addition, By 29 June, Cardano would undergo Vasil hard fork. This is expected to improve the network and its smart contract capabilities.  IOHK earlier had outlined Cardano improvement proposals (CIPs) that is supposed to come with the hard fork.

Users could expect four improvements which are CIP-31 (Reference Inputs), CIP-32 (Inline Datums), CIP-33 (Reference Scripts ), and CIP-40 (Collateral Outputs). According to IOHK, these CIPs provided new features to improve the network.

Nonetheless, certain censures such as the ‘Ghost chain’ narrative had surfaced within the ecosystem despite Cardano’s achievements. On Thursday (5 May), crypto influencer Ran Neuner, host of the YouTube show “Crypto Banter”, shocked the crypto community by claiming that “we don’t even have a working DEX on Cardano.”
