The Frankenbook: A Creation That Cannot Be Killed
The FrankenBook: A Creation that Cannot be Killed
And if only words could kill. Last week at the launch of Windows 7, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer spoke about the dreams of the new operating system and showed off a group of new notebooks that ran the improved Windows, but none were netbooks. He remarked that many have been disappointed in the poor performance and graphics of the mini laptops, echoing almost exactly what Michael Dell had to say a week earlier. The CEO of the corporation that has a complete line of Inspiron Mini netbooks indicated that users are dissatisfied with the small screen sizes and limited power of them after 36 hours of usage. Bottom line: users would rather use a larger sized notebook, according to Dell. (Funny, I’ve been using the same netbook during travel and couch surfing for the past 18 months and I get far more mileage out of my netbook than that, Mr. Dell.)
Clearly, Dell along with Intel and Microsoft want to promote the sales of more profitable machines with full priced operating systems (not a cheap, eight-year-old version of Windows) and a higher powered processor and chipset. And can you really blame them, especially when we heard last week that Apple’s high-priced MacBook line is selling better than ever? When consumers choose a netbook over a more expensive notebook with a higher-priced processor and full $100 version of an operating system, the manufacturer takes a hit and makes little to no moolah.
The phenomenon isn’t new, however. Author of Disrupting Class Clayton Christensen refers to it as over servicing the customer base or “disruptive innovation.” If the vast majority of consumers simply do not need or use the amount of computer power in a typical notebook, then the innovation of the netbook appeals to them, thus fundamentally disrupting industry. And that is exactly what has been happening according to DisplaySearch’s latest numbers. The revenue of notebook sales has gone way down, while netbooks are up by over 200 percent.
But will Michael Dell and the other would-be netbook killers really destroy their own invention? Will they take the knife to the throat of the 10-inch, Intel Atom powered, Windows XP netbook knowing full well that customers are craving the product? They are trying to by releasing, with the help of Intel, a new crop of notebooks with larger sized screens that still maintain the long battery life of netbooks yet pump out more performance. Powered by Intel’s ultra low voltage processors the new products are about $200 to $400 more expensive than a netbook.
No doubt, consumers will buy these new thin and light laptops. The $800 13-inch ASUS UL30 has been getting rave reviews for its mix of battery life and portability. But those 10-inch netbooks will be hard to kill off. They line the shelves of Best Buy and continue to be the bestselling consumer electronics item on Amazon. And believe me, this upcoming holiday season that won’t be changing. People like the attractive price point and when they are living in the Cloud and enjoying the portable form factor it doesn’t seem to be a big issue that they are only useful for only a few hours at a time.
Netbooks struck a cord, which is why the Frankenbook will still be haunting Mr. Ballmer and Mr. Dell come next Halloween.
Cloud Encryption: Using Data Encryption In The Cloud
As business regulations and information security expand at an asymmetrical pace, corporate executives end up facing privacy and security challenges they do not have the knowledge or experience to address. While baseline encryption technology is the cornerstone of security, encryption in the cloud can be daunting. With so many different types of encryption available, small to midsize businesses (SMBs) find this approach inviting yet very confusing. We’re breaking down what business owners need to know about cloud encryption.
Cloud encryption explainedSMBs now have access to the same computing power and storage space as multinational corporations for mere dollars a month, thanks to the cloud. You no longer need to spend a small fortune on computer equipment, software and IT teams to maintain it all. But is your data safe? And how can you make it safer? This is where encryption comes in.
Cloud encryption transforms plaintext data into data that is completely indecipherable (called ciphertext). This means if a cybercriminal manages to hack into your email or web traffic, what they’re left with is useless to them. They have the data, but not the key that would turn the gibberish back into usable information.
Encryption is hardly a new technology, but historically, encrypted data was stored on servers that resided on premises over which the company had direct control. Now that many of today’s popular business applications are hosted in the cloud, business owners either need to depend on contract language to protect their assets, selecting a cloud provider that will allow the customer to encrypt the data before it is sent to the cloud for storage or processing, or partner with a software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider that will manage the encryption and decryption of the corporate data.
Editor’s note: Need a cloud storage solution for your business? Fill out the below questionnaire to have our vendor partners contact you with free information.
FYI
Gartner predicted cloud services end-user spending would reach $397 billion in 2023, with SaaS applications accounting for the largest share of the market.
Data protection explainedData exists in three different states: in transit, in use and at rest.
Data in transit: This is data traveling from one place to another – for example, from a hard drive to a cloud server or an attachment sent by email or to a Slack channel.
Data in use: This is data that is currently being read, accessed, erased, processed, changed or updated on a computer system.
Data at rest: This is data stored in the cloud or on a logical or physical medium. Examples include documents stored on hard drives or flash drives, records in databases, and files on servers that are not being accessed.
Not all corporate data requires encryption and not all users have the same need to access data, said Vic Winkler, a cybersecurity and information security consultant. It is essential for businesses to create rules to identify what information needs encryption and what data can be stored safely in plain text. Winkler said segregating data using SaaS applications that automatically encrypt the data within the applications can go a long way to ensuring important data is protected. The data must also be protected so that it does not impact the company’s business processes negatively.
Data that does require encryption can be in any of the three states, but protecting data at rest is particularly essential, Winkler said. The best choice is to encrypt sensitive data when it is created so that when it is stored in a data center, whether locally or in the cloud, it will be protected.
Did You Know?
It would take two seconds for a brute-force password attack to crack a password containing 12 numbers, according to research from Hive Systems. If a 12-character password contained numbers, upper- and lowercase letters, and symbols, it would take 3,000 years to crack.
Tip
If you’re in charge of setting the password for an asymmetric key, make sure it’s as complicated as possible. User-chosen key passwords can be cracked by cybercriminals in the same way traditional usernames and passwords to log onto computer IT networks can be guessed.
Facebook Messenger Can Now Be Used To Answer Customer Messages
Facebook is rolling out an update to Messenger that will allow page owners to toggle back and forth between personal messages and customer messages.
Business owners can finally respond to customers from the same app they use to communicate with friends and family on Facebook.
The ability to toggle back and forth between different inboxes allows businesses to respond quickly without having to open another app.
All incoming messages are now conveniently grouped together in the same app. But they’re still separated enough to prevent businesses from accidentally responding to a customer from their personal account.
When responding to messages, the business owner can choose whether they want to respond as themselves or as the business.
This should be a worthwhile upgrade to the workflow of business owners, as Facebook says over 90% of business page admins already use Messenger to chat with friends and family.
Facebook’s research indicates most page admins would prefer not to download and manage multiple apps, which makes this upgrade to Messenger an ideal solution.
Fast Replies = Happy CustomersThis update to messenger isn’t all for the benefit of page admins, as it’s also designed to improve the speed at which customers receive replies from businesses.
Customers frequently have questions that come up on their path toward making a purchase. Such as questions about store hours, product availability, delivery and pick-up options, and more.
Being able to respond to customers quickly can make the difference between the customer buying from your business versus a competitor.
Facebook cites a Hubspot survey which states that 90% of customers rate an immediate response as important or very important when they have a marketing or sales question.
In ensure a message never goes unanswered, businesses can even choose to receive additional notifications so they don’t forget to reply to customers.
That means they’ll receive the initial notification when a message is received, and then another notification after some time has passed without a reply.
This is especially helpful at a time where the coronavirus pandemic has forced businesses to operate with limited staff due to layoffs.
Now, business owners who find themselves having to manage a host of new responsibilities can still stay on top of customer messages.
Not Replacing the Page Manager AppThis upgrade to Facebook Messenger is not intended to fully replace the message functionality built into the Page Manager app.
This update from Messenger is simply a different way to respond from an app that many page admins are already using.
There are no additional steps required in order to send and receive business messages through Facebook Messenger.
As long as a page admin’s personal account is connected to their business’s Facebook page, then this update will roll out automatically.
