But that’s not our focus here, this article is for troubleshooting the rare situation where the Apple Keyboard indicator light will randomly start blinking twice after disconnecting from the computer for no obvious reason, typically met with the MacOS Bluetooth preference panel reporting errors like “Not Connected”, “Couldn’t connect to the device”, and “Pairing failed”.
If you run into the blinking keyboard light problem seemingly out of nowhere on an Apple Keyboard that has already been paired with the Mac before, or after a Mac has been asleep and then woken up, you can typically fix the blinking keyboard light problem with a relatively simple troubleshooting approach.
Before beginning, be sure the Apple keyboard batteries are sufficiently charged. If the battery charge is too low or zero, the Bluetooth connection will not sustain itself or even initiate at all. In fact if the keyboard is disconnecting seemingly at random, it’s likely because of battery. This article does not aim to be another general Bluetooth device disconnection troubleshooting guide however, and instead is focused specifically on the twice-blinking light on Apple Keyboards after they have already been setup before.
The blinking Apple Keyboard light looks like the following, the light is at the top of an Apple Keyboard and will blink twice, then briefly stop, then blink twice again, repeating until the keyboard is either paired or turned off:

How to Fix Blinking Apple Keyboard Light on a MacTry this simple approach first to resolve the blinking keyboard light issue:
Turn the Apple Keyboard off (hold the power button for a few moments)
Pull down the APPLE menu and choose “System Preferences” then go to the “Bluetooth” preference panel

Select “Apple Keyboard” and then hit the Delete key on the keyboard and confirm you want to remove the Bluetooth device
Restart the Mac
Upon a successful reboot, return to the Bluetooth system preference panel
Turn on the Apple Keyboard by pressing the Power button to trigger the pairing process again
Choose “Pair” when Apple Keyboard reappears in the Bluetooth Devices list
Enter the numbers shown on screen via the connected Apple Keyboard to pair the keyboard to the Mac
The removal and pair again approach works every time that I personally have run into this issue on my Apple Keyboard, but since it’s slightly more cumbersome than the first approach, which often works too, it’s included as secondary troubleshooting tip.
The above steps should do the trick. If for whatever reason you continue to have difficulty with Bluetooth keyboard, you might want to reset the Bluetooth module on a Mac and start over. That should really not be necessary for the vast majority of Bluetooth troubles however, and usually just confirming the battery is sufficient and then pairing a device again is sufficient to remedy a Bluetooth connection problem.

Alt codes are used to type symbols and characters that do not have a dedicated key on the keyboard in personal computers running the Microsoft Operating systems. You can do this by pressing and holding the Alt key while typing the alt code with the numeric keypad.
To type♥ using the Heart Alt code of 3: first, ensure that your NumLock is turned on, then press and hold the alt key while you type the code on the numeric keypad. Then release the Alt key.

If you are using a laptop without the numeric keypad, you should first turn on the hidden numeric keypad. On most laptops, you can turn this on by pressing Fn+NmLk keys simultaneously. Not all laptops have the hidden numeric keypad. If it seems missing in yours, then you cannot use the alt code method to type the Heart (♥) symbol with your laptop unless you connect an external keyboard that has a numeric keypad.
You should also understand that not all symbols can be typed with the alt code depending on the document you are working on. Some of the alt codes work only in Microsoft Word. However, the black Heart (♥) alt code works anywhere on Windows such as text editors, on the web, forms, and so on.

Here’s How I Made My Fiancé A Blinking Engagement Ring
In 2023, engineer Andrew Martin used LEDs to create a ring that can blink out any date. He got the idea from a fictional engagement ring that flashed the date that the groom and bride met. You don’t need to use a marriage proposal as an excuse to hack together your own blinky ring —it works as a Valentine’s gift, too.: Three out of five hearts.
At the end of 2023, 22-year-old Andrew Martin was celebrating the return of his favorite webcomic Achewood, written by Chris Onstad. The surreal story, which had been on indefinite hiatus since 2011, follows a group of friends (three cats, an otter, a couple bears, and a squirrel) dealing with everyday life: anxiety, aimlessness, and the fear of being found wanting.
Its return inspired Martin, a QA Engineer at Dematic Reddwerks in Austin, TX, to revisit a 2007 storyline in which one of the main characters builds an electronic engagement ring and programs it to blink the date he met his girlfriend. Martin decided to make the ring in real life.

This dysfunction is a key part of the storyline that introduces the blinky ring. The character Roast Beef, who suffers from depression and anxiety, wants to propose to his girlfriend Molly (a 17th-century Welsh woman who came back to life and got a job at Taco Bell—don’t ask). But shopping for an engagement ring, with all the attendant money woes, politics, expectations, and standards, sends Roast Beef spiraling.
That’s when he decides to make the ring himself. He wires a chip, resistor, and LED together on what looks suspiciously like a Ring Pop base, then programs the ring to blink the date that he and Molly met. Even the plastic base is true to the character—someone who would look down on an inexpensive homemade ring wouldn’t be the partner he was looking for.
“Roast Beef is in his soul a punk, so he wouldn’t go the traditional channel with precious gemstones,” explains Onstad. “This ring also revealed that beneath all his issues he is a romantic: He made a technology-themed ring for a girlfriend he had originally bonded with over technology.”
And that led to the Sunday afternoon when I sat down with Martin and built my fiancé a ring of his very own. I (the author) actually got engaged while writing this article, so I asked Martin to help me make a blinky ring that would flash the date that my fiancé and I met, just like in the comic. The ring my fiancé gave me has tiny sapphires in it, so I made his DIY version match my more valuable one by using a turquoise LED on top of a gold ring base.

“I really wanted to go forward with the spirit of the comic and say, ‘what can I do in an afternoon with the parts I have lying around the house,’” says Martin. “I could take it in a lot of directions, but I went the Achewood route, where I made it sort of grungy but lived up to the spirit of what the comic was all about.”
He envisions this ring as a good introductory electronics project, with lots of room for improvement and development. DIYers could add an on/off switch (right now you have to manually squeeze the batteries together or use a rubber band). Visually, there are a lot of options, such as 3-D printing a gem shape for the top or embracing a hardware-like aesthetic with a decorative breadboard of some sort. Next time, Martin would like to use flat copper tape and find a circuit base to cover the ring so it looks more like the version pictured in Achewood. Also, more prosaically: next time he knows to bend the wires before gluing stuff down.
The man himself, Onstad, reassured us that our ring was cool and all, but spoke the truth: “Roast Beef would have had a pretty tight game on this and used a smaller-circumference ring base, and special-ordered old school breadboard in green. But yours is personal; that’s what matters.”
On one hand, it’s just an LED on a plastic ring base. On the other, it’s a fan’s ultimate homage to a truly touching love story. On my fiancé’s hand, though, it’s a ring that I made just for him, that blinks the date we met. And that’s pretty rad.

InstructionsStep 1
Connect the ATtiny to the Arduino Uno using the capacitor and breadboard and following this guide. Upload this basic Arduino program, which tells an LED to blink, to check that the programming works.

Modify the blink program so it will blink the date sequence that you want. Martin explains, “We’re going to make a few tweaks to the program to make it good for the ATtiny. First, the LED we will send information to on the ATtiny will be associated with a particular pin (pin 0). Second, we want to turn a simple blinking on and off into blinking a date.” To do that, the program must tell the LED to blink a certain number of times, pause for a second, blink again for the month, pause, and blink the year. Use the (digitalwrite) and (delay) commands at the bottom of the page to modify the code for whatever date you desire.
Step 3
Pry up the ATtiny and then glue it onto the ring base. Make sure that the side with pin 1 (pin 1 has a little black dot above it) is facing the center of the ring. It will make putting it together much easier.

Create a battery pack: Stack the three batteries on top of one another facing the same direction, then roll them tightly in electrical tape, leaving the top and bottom clear and trimming any excess tape on the edges. Glue the pack down, keeping the positive side facing the same direction as the positive lead of the LED.

Place and hot-glue the resistor close to the shorter, negative lead of the LED.
Step 7
Use insulated wire to connect the battery pack to the ATTiny. Connect the positive side of the battery to the power pin of the ATtiny (pin 8) and the negative side of the battery to the ground pin (pin 4). Glue the wires in place.

Now it’s time to bend the wires. Bend one end of the resistor up to the negative lead of LED. Bend the other end of the resistor around to pin 5 (diagonally across from the pin with the dot) on the ATtiny. Bend the positive lead of the LED around to pin 8, the same pin the power wire connects to.
Step 9
Grab the soldering iron. Solder the LED wire to the battery wire and the chip, making sure to get all three. Then solder the negative lead of the LED wire to the resistor. Finally, solder the other end of the resistor to pin 5 on the ATtiny.

Dictation lets you enter text using your voice instead of typing on the keyboard. It’s also known by other names like talk to text, voice to text, or speech to text. However, sometimes the dictation microphone icon may be missing on the keyboard or it may not convert what you speak into text.
If dictation isn’t working on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac, here are some reliable solutions to fix the problem.
Fix dictation not working
Connect to Wi-Fi or Cellular
You can use dictation offline on iPhone 6s and later. However, not all dictation languages work without being connected to the internet. So, for best results, make sure your iPhone or iPad is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
Plus, when you select a new dictation language (or immediately after setting up your iPhone), you will have to connect to Wi-Fi for support files to download.
Enable and disable Airplane Mode
Go to the iPhone or iPad settings app and enable Airplane Mode. After waiting for around 15 seconds, tap the same toggle to turn off Airplane Mode.
Force quit the app in question and reopen it
If dictation isn’t working in a particular app, force close and reopen it. After that, tap the microphone key on the iOS keyboard and try to use dictation. It should input what you speak.
Restart your iPhone
When dictation is not working on iPhone, or it comes and disappears from the screen, simply turn off your iPhone and turn it back on. It’s an important fix. So, make sure you don’t skip it.
Disable and re-enable dictation to refresh it
Follow these steps to turn off and turn on dictation which should ensure it starts working correctly. This particular step will help you verify if you had enabled dictation in the first place or not!
Open iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch Settings and tap General.
Tap Keyboard.
Wait for a few seconds and restart your iPhone.
Now, open the Apple Notes app, tap the microphone icon on your keyboard, and dictation should work like a charm.
Turn off extra dictation languages
If you’re bilingual or multilingual, you might have added more than one keyboard to your iPhone. After that, you’ll see a Dictation Languages option appear below the Enable Dictation toggle. Tap it and uncheck all the languages except one. Now, restart your iPhone and try using dictation. It should work as expected.
Once that’s done, you can check more dictation languages if you want to use them. In case doing so starts causing dictation problems again, update your iPhone.
Important: Make sure you select the right accent for the same language. For example, if I’m from India, for best results, I should select English (India) as my dictation language instead of English (US) or English (UK).
Dictation option missing in iPhone Settings?
If you don’t see the Enable Dictation option in the steps above, follow these two fixes:
Add iOS keyboardYou will lose Apple’s dictation feature if you add just a third-party keyboard (like SwiftKey) and remove the built-in Apple keyboard. To see the Enable Dictation option in iPhone keyboard settings, do the following:
Choose a keyboard under Suggested Keyboards or Other iPhone Keyboards.
Now go back and you should see the Enable Dictation option. If not, restart your iPhone.
Note: Some third-party keyboard (like SwiftKey) may also offer their own dictation feature. You can use that while using the third-party keyboard.
Unrestrict Siri & DictationFollow these steps to ensure dictation is not restricted:
Open iPhone or iPad Settings and tap Screen Time.
If it says, Turn On Screen Time, you can skip all the steps below. Else, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
If Content & Privacy Restrictions is disabled, you can skip the steps below. If it’s enabled, tap Allowed Apps.
Under Allowed Apps, make sure Siri & Dictation is enabled.
You should see the Enable Dictation option after adding the iOS keyboard and ensuring dictation isn’t restricted.
Try using dictation without AirPods or earphones
At times, you may not be able to use dictation at all, or it may function poorly with wired or wireless earphones. If it isn’t working at all, make sure your iPhone isn’t stuck in headphone mode.
Remove iOS keyboard and add it again
Here’s how you can remove the iPhone keyboard and re-add it to ensure dictation works:
Tap Add New Keyboard and select your desired iPhone keyboard. Now, open Notes or a similar app and use dictation. It should work well.
Turn off Siri and turn it back on
Siri and dictation are related. So, if dictation isn’t working after following the above solutions, turn Siri off and on.
Go to Settings and tap Siri & Search.
Turn off Listen for “Hey Siri” and Press Side (or Home) Button for Siri.
Restart your iPhone.
Enable Siri again by turning on the switches you turned off in step 2.
Clean iPhone’s microphone
If your iPhone’s microphone grills are dirty, it can cause blockage, which causes poor experience on calls, Siri, voice recordings, dictation, and other related things. To fix this, make sure you remove any iPhone case and use a cloth, dry brush, or toothpick to clean the microphone holes.

Turn off Voice Control
Do you see “Keyboard Dictation is disabled when Voice Control is on” in the dictation preferences screen on Mac?

Tip: Dictation can listen to you continuously for about 30 to 40 seconds. After that, you must pause and let it process and type what you said before speaking again.
Turn dictation off and back on
Select the right microphone for dictation
While you’re on the dictation preferences screen, make sure the correct microphone is selected. Select Automatic if you often use AirPods or other audio devices with your Mac.
Quit the Mac app and retry using dictation
