As rumored, Apple today took the wraps off two new iPhones during a streamed media presentation in Cupertino, Calif.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus boast a new Retina HD screens. “Not any display would do,” said Schiller. Compared to the 4-inch screen on the iPhone 5S, the iPhone 6 sports a 4.7-inch display with a resolution of 1334 pixels by 750 pixels.
The larger, phablet-sized iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels, which translates into over 2 million pixels, 185 percent more than the iPhone 5S, noted Schiller. Both models feature a glass front that curves slightly around the edge.
Highlights include iOS 8, an updated 8 megapixel iSight camera and a faster A8 64-bit processor with 2 billion transistors that is “50 times faster than the original iPhone,” said Schiller. Connectivity is enhanced with a 150 Mbps LTE and a Wi-Fi Calling feature that “seamlessly” hands off to cellular networks. In the U.S., T-Mobile will support Wi-Fi calling.
Eddie Cue, senior vice president of Internet Software and Services at Apple, later showed off the company’s mobile payments solution, Apple Wallet. A combination of near-field communication (NFC) technology, Touch ID, a Secure Element chip and specialized software, the Apple Wallet integrates with Passbook to enable secure payments with retailers and select e-commerce apps.
Cue assured that his company will respect the privacy of Apple Wallet users. “The transaction is between you, the merchant and your bank,” he said.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus go on sale on Sept. 19. iPhone 6 prices start at the $199 for the 16 GB model and top out at $399 for the 128 GB version. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus prices start at $299. Preorders for both models start on Sept. 12.
The event’s “one more thing” was the long-rumored iWatch, or as the company is branding it, the Apple Watch. Available in two sizes, the wearable “works seamlessly with iPhone,” said Cook. It also serves as a “comprehensive health and fitness device,” he added.
Apple Watch pushed the company to explore new interface and device interaction models. “What we didn’t do is take the iPhone and shrink the user interface,” said Cook.
The touch-capable, sapphire-enhanced display is complemented with a “digital crown” that contains infrared LEDs. Users can press and twist the dial to zoom and otherwise navigate the Apple Watch UI. A rear sensor monitors a user’s heart rate. It also features integration with Apple Pay for mobile payments.
To get developers on board, Apple is making available a software development kit (SDK) called WatchKit to extend iPhone apps to the device. Apple watch requires the iPhone, said Cook, before revealing that the smartwatch is backward compatible with iPhone models stretching back to the iPhone 5.
Apple’s wearable will be available in three versions, the base Apple Watch, the Sport and the 18 karat gold Edition. A range of interchangeable watch bands, from leather to sweat-resistant plastic to an array of metals, add an additional touch of personalization.
Prices start at $349. Apple Watch is scheduled to ship in early 2024.

Dictation lets you enter text using your voice instead of typing on the keyboard. It’s also known by other names like talk to text, voice to text, or speech to text. However, sometimes the dictation microphone icon may be missing on the keyboard or it may not convert what you speak into text.
If dictation isn’t working on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac, here are some reliable solutions to fix the problem.
Fix dictation not working
Connect to Wi-Fi or Cellular
You can use dictation offline on iPhone 6s and later. However, not all dictation languages work without being connected to the internet. So, for best results, make sure your iPhone or iPad is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
Plus, when you select a new dictation language (or immediately after setting up your iPhone), you will have to connect to Wi-Fi for support files to download.
Enable and disable Airplane Mode
Go to the iPhone or iPad settings app and enable Airplane Mode. After waiting for around 15 seconds, tap the same toggle to turn off Airplane Mode.
Force quit the app in question and reopen it
If dictation isn’t working in a particular app, force close and reopen it. After that, tap the microphone key on the iOS keyboard and try to use dictation. It should input what you speak.
Restart your iPhone
When dictation is not working on iPhone, or it comes and disappears from the screen, simply turn off your iPhone and turn it back on. It’s an important fix. So, make sure you don’t skip it.
Disable and re-enable dictation to refresh it
Follow these steps to turn off and turn on dictation which should ensure it starts working correctly. This particular step will help you verify if you had enabled dictation in the first place or not!
Open iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch Settings and tap General.
Wait for a few seconds and restart your iPhone.

Turn off extra dictation languages

Important: Make sure you select the right accent for the same language. For example, if I’m from India, for best results, I should select English (India) as my dictation language instead of English (US) or English (UK).
Dictation option missing in iPhone Settings?
If you don’t see the Enable Dictation option in the steps above, follow these two fixes:Add iOS keyboard
You will lose Apple’s dictation feature if you add just a third-party keyboard (like SwiftKey) and remove the built-in Apple keyboard. To see the Enable Dictation option in iPhone keyboard settings, do the following:
Choose a keyboard under Suggested Keyboards or Other iPhone Keyboards.
Now go back and you should see the Enable Dictation option. If not, restart your iPhone.
Note: Some third-party keyboard (like SwiftKey) may also offer their own dictation feature. You can use that while using the third-party keyboard.Unrestrict Siri & Dictation
Follow these steps to ensure dictation is not restricted:
Open iPhone or iPad Settings and tap Screen Time.
If it says, Turn On Screen Time, you can skip all the steps below. Else, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
If Content & Privacy Restrictions is disabled, you can skip the steps below. If it’s enabled, tap Allowed Apps.
Under Allowed Apps, make sure Siri & Dictation is enabled.
You should see the Enable Dictation option after adding the iOS keyboard and ensuring dictation isn’t restricted.
Try using dictation without AirPods or earphones
At times, you may not be able to use dictation at all, or it may function poorly with wired or wireless earphones. If it isn’t working at all, make sure your iPhone isn’t stuck in headphone mode.
Remove iOS keyboard and add it again
Here’s how you can remove the iPhone keyboard and re-add it to ensure dictation works:
Tap Add New Keyboard and select your desired iPhone keyboard. Now, open Notes or a similar app and use dictation. It should work well.
Turn off Siri and turn it back on
Siri and dictation are related. So, if dictation isn’t working after following the above solutions, turn Siri off and on.
Go to Settings and tap Siri & Search.
Turn off Listen for “Hey Siri” and Press Side (or Home) Button for Siri.
Restart your iPhone.
Enable Siri again by turning on the switches you turned off in step 2.
Clean iPhone’s microphone
If your iPhone’s microphone grills are dirty, it can cause blockage, which causes poor experience on calls, Siri, voice recordings, dictation, and other related things. To fix this, make sure you remove any iPhone case and use a cloth, dry brush, or toothpick to clean the microphone holes.
Important: If any external device (like earphones) is attached to your iPhone, disconnect it to ensure the on-device mic is used.
Reset network settings or all settings
In case the dictation problem continues, reset your iPhone’s network settings. This should help, and if it doesn’t, you can reset all settings. Here’s how to do both.

Turn off Voice Control
Do you see “Keyboard Dictation is disabled when Voice Control is on” in the dictation preferences screen on Mac?

If you’re having patchy experience with dictation on Mac, use it in a room with less noise. This is especially help if you have an old Mac.
Tip: Dictation can listen to you continuously for about 30 to 40 seconds. After that, you must pause and let it process and type what you said before speaking again.
Turn dictation off and back on
Select the right microphone for dictation
While you’re on the dictation preferences screen, make sure the correct microphone is selected. Select Automatic if you often use AirPods or other audio devices with your Mac.
Quit the Mac app and retry using dictation

Tap Erase All Content and Settings.

This can also be done from the Watch app on your iPhone. Launch the Watch app → My Watch → General → Reset settings → Tap Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings.
Let your Apple Watch complete the resetting process and restore the factory default settings. When it’s done, restart your Apple Watch and pair it with your iPhone. Once set up and paired, try connecting to Wi-Fi and check if it’s working.
When Apple announced the Apple Watch, I knew I wanted one. In fact, when Motorola announced the Moto 360, I wanted one of those too. If it had been compatible with iOS without any tricks or hacks, then I might have even bought one. It’s probably safe to say that the idea of a smartwatch appeals to me greatly.
But since the announcement of pricing for the Apple Watch I have found myself in conversation with more than a few people who just don’t seem to get why the Apple Watch is so exciting to some of us. It’s expensive, they say. It doesn’t do anything that your iPhone doesn’t do, they point out. You just don’t need it.
And they’re right on all counts. It’s far from cheap, even in its Apple Watch Sport incarnation. Our iPhones do, bar some of the health stuff, exactly what this newfangled watch will do. And no, I don’t desperately need one. But I do want one.
People not understanding what makes me tick about the Apple Watch is fine though. In fact, it’s much higher on the ‘fine’ scale than that awful pun. After all, it just wouldn’t do for us to all be the same now, would it?
When everyone was buying thick, heavy mobile phones because they had the best cameras in, I just didn’t understand why. I didn’t want to take photos with a phone. The idea was just stupid.
When smartphones were just starting to put in an appearance, long before the iPhone, I wanted the smallest, thinnest and lightest dumb phone Nokia had to offer. I had a computer for computer-y things. Why would I want to do them on a phone?
Of course, these days all the mobile phones we are interested in are of the smart variety, and camera capabilities are very much at the top of anyone’s list of requirements when making a purchase. My iPhone 6 is my one and only camera, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
In case you were wondering, there is indeed a point to this little trip down memory lane. My point is a simple one, and it is that times change, Technology changes, and more importantly, our uses for that technology change along with it. What smartwatches can do today pales into insignificance when compared with what they will be doing tomorrow. I don’t think we have even scratched the surface with what we will be using the Apple Watch for once developers get their teeth into it properly, and that’s what excites me. I get giddy not for what the Apple Watch will do come April 24th, but what it will be doing come six months down the line. Or twelve months. Or five years.
After all, look at the iPhone back in 2007. Eight years later, compare that with what we have now and how we use it. They can’t, and shouldn’t be compared.
So with that in mind, just imagine what the Apple Watch will be doing in 2023.
We might live in the future, but there’s always more of it around the corner. I can’t wait to see what it has to show us, and I think it might just be smartwatch-shaped.
iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus hands-on
It’s the iPhone duo we’ve been expecting, the screen size increases we’ve been so curious about, and the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus likely to be on many wishlists this holiday season. Apple’s iOS 8 smartphones are bigger, faster, and more capable than before, but have they also lost some of their charm in the process? Read on for some hands-on impressions.
First off, the leaks were right… up to a point. As is so often the case in the run up to a big product launch, the designs are commonly seen before they’re meant to be, and these days Apple is no exception.
What makes a difference is how our expectations were shaped by those leaks, and how the iPhone 6 and its Plus sibling actually feel in the hand. Some were worried that the antenna bars would be too obvious, that the camera bulge would protrude too greatly, or that the phone overall would feel too cushiony with its rounded edges in the face of the crisp-sided iPhone 5s.
Happily, that’s really not the case. In fact, dozens of little details leave the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feeling like the best versions yet when you pick them up. The way the touchscreen glass curves and blends sinuously into the edges, your thumb trailing smoothly from one to the other. The crisp slices of the partially-recessed side buttons.
Yes, the camera sticks out a little – in return, on the iPhone 6 Plus at least, you get optical image stabilization for the camera – but it’s a minor bump. Aesthetically, I prefer the way the antenna lines look on the darker versions of the phone, but they’re certainly not the design deal-breakers many presumed them to be.
Turning it on, and you’re faced with a screen that’s clearly a step above previous iPhone panels, even with Retina display technology. Inkier blacks and wider viewing angles; it’s a cliche, these days, to say that a phone’s panel looks like its been printed on, store-dummy style, but it’s nonetheless a fitting description for the iPhone 6.
It’s responsive, too, though I only had the chance to scratch the surface of iOS 8. Still, maps shift around and render swiftly, and I was able to briefly play a couple of games with no lag or stuttering. The full capabilities of the Apple A8 chip will have to wait until we have a device in-hand, but I’ve no pre-emptive concerns out of the gate.
On the back, Apple has further opted out of the megapixel race, instead throwing in phase-detection style autofocus. Again, I wasn’t able to extract any of the sample shots I took from the handsets themselves, but the focus lock was certainly swift, more so than the iPhone 5s I compared them with. Apple’s upgrade/replace cycle has certainly produced some impressive smartphones, but the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are arguably the best yet. Purists may decry the bigger screens, but even after a few minutes features like double-tapping the home button on the iPhone 6 Plus to shift down the upper half of the screen so it was within thumb-reach became near-automatic (unfortunately you can’t swipe up with a thumb to shift it back into place, instead having to tap the button again).
It’s simple, but it’s so convenient I wonder why other phablets haven’t done it first. Similarly, moving the power button down to the side makes a lot of sense.
So, the changes have been considerable, but I’ve a feeling the Apple-faithful will embrace the new iPhone 6, certainly, and even find room to accommodate the iPhone 6 Plus in their pockets. We’ll know more when review units drop on the desk, however.
