How To Become A Paid Board Member

It’s a fact that in most countries there are more unpaid than paid non-executive director roles. The unpaid ones tend to be on the boards of charities, sports bodies, community groups or even state funded organisations. There are, for example, over one million non-executive directors on the boards of charities in the UK. 

The more glamorous and higher paid roles for board members will be on the boards of PLCs, financial services organisations or large private companies. The less glamorous roles – but higher risk ones – will be on the boards of start-ups who do not have the revenue to pay non-executive directors.

The road to becoming a paid non-executive director (NED) role will be challenging, as inevitably the standard sought will be higher from boards who will be able to pick and choose. Most boards are cautious and conservative, preferring experience (sometimes many years of the same experience) which, while safe, may not be the right thing to do for the organisation as it seeks innovation and fresh air in the boardroom.

However, globalisation, digitisation, cyber security, and new tech based business models will provide opportunities for a younger generation of competent non-executive directors.

With this is mind, here is a six step guide you need to take to land a paid board position.

1. Assess your own potential

This means, what have you got to offer today? What can you bring to the table in terms of skills and experience? Carrying out a SWOT on yourself would be a good first step. Enlist the help of a friend who might be more objective to help. Does this process highlight any gaps that may need to be closed such as a relevant governance qualification.

Bootstrap 5 Starter Template – Webnots

Bootstrap 5 was released as a final public version. This essentially means you should prepare migrating from previous version and use the new version for building any new websites. Whether you are migrating or starting a new site, you should first learn the bare minimum or starter template. In this tutorial we will explain how to create base Bootstrap 5 starter template for starting your projects with simple examples.

1. Downloading Bootstrap 5 Source Files

As an end user, there are two ways to make use of Bootstrap CSS and JavaScript files. One is to download the precompiled files and include them in your projects and the second is to make use of the CDN links.

You can learn more about getting Bootstrap files in getting started with Bootstrap article.

2. Using Bootstrap Files on Your Own Server

You can download the precompiled CSS and JavaScript files from the GitHub repository. The zip file should have CSS and JS folders. Below are the files available inside CSS folders:

Bootstrap 5 Files

There are multiple CSS versions available in the downloaded source file:

Default and minified CSS files which you can use with any project

Utilities file

Grid only version

Reboot only version

On a production server, you can use the minified version “bootstrap.min.css” for all your needs. The source map files help to map between the source and the precompiled minified versions. You don’t need to use reboot, grid and map files for regular usage on the sites.

Note: When you only use “bootstrap.min.css” file on your site, some browsers like Safari will show error or warning in developer console that source map file is missing. In order to fix the error, open the Bootstrap CSS file and remove the last line “/*# */“.

Similar to CSS files, the JS folder will have “bootstrap.js” and “bootstrap.bundle.js“. The “bootstrap.js” file does not include Popper script but the bundle version includes the Popper script. With earlier Bootstrap 4 version, you need to include jQuery separately for the JavaScript components to work properly. However, Bootstrap 5 does not need jQuery as part of the framework and designed to work without jQuery.

The basic starter template should look like below when you host the above files on your server:

Remember, if you are not using the bundled JS file then you need to include separate JS and popper script files. If you have noticed properly, there are many additional tags and scripts in the starter template.

Note we have used “assets/css/bootstrap.min.css” and “assets/js/bootstrap.bundle.min.js” as file paths. It is a good habit to keep all CSS and JS files in separate folder so that it is easy to manage. This essentially means you should create corresponding folders on your server and upload the Bootstrap CSS and JS files manually. Also keep the images in separate “images” folder and HTML files on the root of your site. So the entire structure should look something like below on your server:

The “Theme Folder” in the above example is your site’s root folder which should be your domain or subdomain or subdirectory.

3. Using Starter Template with CDN

Hosting all needed files on your server is the correct way but it will impact the loading speed and hosting capacity. So, we recommend to use CDN links for CSS and JS files instead of hosting them on your own server. This will ensure the fast delivery of those static files and improve the page loading speed. Below is a Bootstrap 5 starter template with CDN links for CSS and scripts. You can simply add content on the body section to start building your site or theme. Earlier, Bootstrap 4 version was from Bootstrap CDN network and the latest version 5 is from jsDelivr.

4. Customizing Bootstrap Source Files

Using the complete template files are not required in all cases. For example, when you want to use only Bootstrap buttons then you can only use the appropriate styles for the buttons. Bootstrap offers a customizer for the previous version 3.4 where you can choose what components are required and generate the precompiled files.

At this moment there is no detailed customizer available for Bootstrap 5 version. However, you can refer the official documentation site for getting more details on customizing Bootstrap 5.

5. Taking Starter Template Further

Now that you have your final starter template either hosted on your server or using CDN links. The next step is to add content and start building your site. Below is one simple example in which we have created different contextual buttons using default Bootstrap button classes.

Ideally there is no need of using jQuery, popper and Bootstrap script files for creating simple buttons which are controlled through CSS. We have shown the example for the sake of completeness of the starter template. Also when you add more components, the bundled script file should be included.

6. Using Bootstrap Bundled Script Version

As explained above, Bootstrap 5 has a bundled script file combining “bootstrap.min.js” and “popper.min.js“. So if you want to use the bundled version then modify the starter template like below using “bootstrap.bundle.min.js” file.

7. Including Bootstrap Icons in Template

Bootstrap version 5 comes with 1300+ free SVG icons that you can easily include in your websites. It helps to eliminate the dependency of external icons like Font Awesome icons. There are multiple ways to include the icons in your starter template and the best option is to use CDN CSS like below. We have shown an example icon in the body section with alert component. You can get the complete list of CSS classes for the icons here.

8. Using Static Site Generators

It is easy to create a static website using Bootstrap starter template, but modifying multiple static files on a bigger site will consume lot of time. A single webpage contains different sections like header, main content, footer and sidebar. All sections other than the main content are used site wide with the same information. Static generators use the concept of partials by having the base templates for each of the sections like header, footer and sidebar. Finally all these base templates are assembled with the main body content on each pages separately.

Whenever there is a change required on the header, footer and sidebar, you can modify the base templates instead of modifying each and every page individually. When the site is ready you can generate the HTML, CSS and JavaScript files to upload them on your server. This data needs to be in order to derive some purpose from it. Because forms of data can be texts, images, videos, infographics, gifs, etc. Some data are structured while most of them are unstructured. Collection, analysis, and prediction are the necessary steps that are to take into consideration with this data.

Now, what exactly are Data Science and Machine learning?

I’ll just define it for you in a simple way. All the context related to this can be similar if you search somewhere else. So data science is the science of deriving insights from data for the purpose of gaining the most important and relevant source of information. And with a reliable source of information making predictions by the use of machine learning. So I guess you might have very well understood this definition. Now my point here is that with data science you can bring meaningful insights.

Why there is a need for data science and machine learning?

Data has been there for a very long time. During earlier times analysis of data was done by statisticians and analysts. Analysis of data was done primarily to get the summary and what were the causes. Mathematics was also the core subject of interest when used for this work.

How data science and machine learning solutions?

Data science uses statistical methods, maths, and programming techniques to solve these problems. The programming techniques are extensively used for analysis, visualizing, and making predictions. So you see it does all the work of a statistician, programmer, and maths. The study of all these major areas makes the best way of dealing with such big data. Machine learning is integrated by making models from various algorithms. 

This is done for model building in data science which helps for future predictions. These predictions depend upon the new data which is given to the model without explicitly telling it what to do. The model understands it and then gives us the output or solution. For example, banks use machine learning algorithms to detect if there is a fraud transaction or not. Or if this customer will default in paying his credit card dues.

Cancer detection in the health care industry uses data science and machine learning to detect if patients are prone to cancer or not. So there are a lot of examples around us where companies are widely using this. Online food delivery companies like zomato or swiggy use for recommending us food to order based on what have we ordered in the past. This type of machine learning algorithm is a recommendation system. They are also used by YouTube, Spotify, Amazon, etc.

The Data science life cycle.

There are various steps involved in solving business problems with data science.

1. Data acquisition – this process involves the collection of data. Depends on are objectives or what is the problem that needs to be solved. By this means, we tend to gather the required data.

2. Data pre-processing – this stage involves processing data in a structured format for ease of use. Unstructured data cannot be used for any analysis because it will give wrong business solutions and can have a bad impact on consumers.

3.Exploratory data analysis (EDA) – it is one of the most important stages where all the summarizations of data by statistics and math’s. Identifying the target(output) variable and predictor(independent) variables. Visualization of data and then sorting all the necessary data that will be used for predictions. Programming plays a vital role in this. A data scientist spends almost 75% of their time on this to understand their data very well. Further in this stage data is divided into training and test data.

4. Model building – After EDA we select the most appropriate methods to build our model. This is done with the use of machine learning algorithms. Selection of algorithms like regression, classification, or clustering. As machine learning algorithms are of 3 types. Supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning. There are different sets of algorithms for all these types. Selecting them depends mainly on what is a problem are we trying to solve.

5. Evaluation of model – model evaluation is done to see how efficient our model is doing on the test data. Minimizing errors and also tuning of the model.

6. Deployment of model – model deployment is done as now it is fit to cater to all the future data for making predictions.

Note: There are re-evaluation techniques involved even after deployment to keep our model up-to-date.

How all this is done?

Data science tools and frameworks are specifically used for this process. Some popular tools like jupyter, tableau, tensor flow. Programming languages such as Python and R are important to do these tasks. To know and learn any one language is sufficient. Python and R are widely used for data science because there are additional libraries that make it easy for any data science project. I prefer Python as it is open-source, easy to learn, and has huge community support across the world. Statistics, math, and linear algebra are some core subjects you need to understand before getting involved in any data science or machine learning project.

In the future, these sources of data will keep on expanding and there will be a need to harvest all of these. An important part or information to get from this data will only derive the need for data scientists and machine learning engineers.
