Suggested January 2024 4 Ways Classroom Design Impacts Executive Functioning

At the beginning of a new school year, many of us spend a lot of time working on our classroom design—arranging desks just so and putting up engaging bulletin boards.

But designing a space is not decorating. Instead, it should impact learning and have a purpose. Teachers often re-create the same classroom year after year without assessing whether their design guides students’ learning. Websites such as Pinterest give teachers ideas for decorating a room, but do these ideas support student learning?

Good classroom design supports the acquisition of not only content skills but process skills. We believe that when students are aware of the purpose of the process, they are more likely to internalize these processes. This year, we are intentionally designing spaces that give students opportunities to learn content and also executive functioning process skills.

Executive functions are process skills that allow us to successfully complete tasks. In any given classroom, there will be a wide range of students with a variety of executive functioning skill levels. These skills include working memory, task initiation, organization, metacognition, inhibition, planning and prioritizing, time management, emotional control, sustained attention, flexibility, and goal-directed persistence.

Executive functions develop biologically but also through experience. Students need to practice executive functioning skills just like they need to practice phonetic skills, math facts, and reading comprehension skills. Therefore, teachers have a responsibility and, more important, an opportunity, to cultivate these skills. The design of the classroom is one way to support these skills.

How Classroom Design Impacts Executive Functioning

1. Working memory. Working memory is one’s ability to hold information in order to complete a task. It’s been described as a “sticky note” to help students complete their work. Good classroom design supports working memory by limiting teacher language and verbal directions. When the design of the classroom tells students what to do, it frees up working memory for learning content rather than procedure. The design creates routine and transparency for the students.

Classroom teachers should create visuals to support their daily routine, which will limit teacher directions. These visuals could include anchor charts that outline the procedure of the daily routines, checklists, or visual cues to help with classroom organization.

2. Organization. The design of the classroom should help students organize their bodies, their materials, and, most important, their thinking. There need to be clear systems in place. For example, your classroom meeting area needs to have enough room for each student.

To help organize materials, homework should be dropped off in the same place each morning. Teachers need to be consistent so that students internalize the systems.

A well-designed classroom models for students how organization helps accomplish tasks. We realize that when teachers model structures, students can start to generalize and implement these structures with their own work and thinking. An outsider should be able to walk into a classroom and understand most of these systems.

3. Task initiation. Task initiation is one’s ability to start a task independently. The setup of your classroom should prompt students and help them prioritize the steps of a routine.

For example, if supplies are clearly marked and accessible, students can initiate their work independently. It’s important that the materials do not distract students. When too many materials are available, students have difficulty assessing what is necessary and can become focused on the materials rather than the task.

4. Inhibition. Inhibition is one’s ability to self-monitor one’s own behavior. When design is clear and simple, students won’t be as easily distracted and can better regulate their own behavior. Color can be a good tool to organize information, but when color does not have a purpose and instead is used to decorate, it can confuse students. For example, alternating two colors when listing steps can help; however, rainbow information can hinder production.

Design should not be stagnant. Your students’ work and product should help you decide if your classroom is working. Teachers spend time creating their classrooms prior to student arrival, but often the design that works in September is not the design that works in January or in May. It’s important to continually reassess your design choices. Students’ perspectives can be an important part of the design assessment. When students’ input is included, the process becomes more transparent, and students can understand that design has purpose.

4 Ways Plant Protein Is Healthier Than Animal Protein

It’d be great if a burger-a-day diet was healthy. Don’t get me wrong—it’s not the worst. You’ve got protein in there and hopefully some veggies on top (and on the side) , and even some fiber from the roll (you used whole grain, right?)

Unfortunately, study after study shows that meat as a protein source isn’t the healthiest. It’s far better to get that necessary protein from plants. Generally speaking, diets heavy on plant matter tend to be healthier. In fact, according to a 2023 review in the International Journal of Epidemiology, which reviewed 95 studies, eating five servings of plants per day provides a slight lower risk of heart attack and stroke, and upping that intake to 10 servings a day could lower a person’s risk of cardiovascular disease by 28 percent and overall risk of death by 31 percent.

[Related: There’s one magic substance that will help with America’s gut problems]

Yes, these studies represent associations, which are correlations, not causations. But there are some legitimate reasons that plant-based protein sources like beans are a healthier alternative to bacon. The researchers aren’t saying you can’t or shouldn’t indulge in a thick Delmonico or a flame-grilled cheeseburger. Rather that you should enjoy them in moderation. Generally, research shows that less animal meat—most especially red meat—is better than more, in terms of long term health. You don’t have to love tofu, either (it’s not the best plant-based protein anyway), as long as you strive to eat more of your protein from the ground and less from animals.

Here’s a deeper dive into why:

Plant protein has more nutrients and fiber (though not all of the amino acids)

Animal meat is known for its many nutrients. If you eat a variety of animal meats (light and dark, not just beef, as well as various organs), you can take in all the amino acids you need to manufacture your own bodily proteins plus vitamins like B12, niacin, thiamine, B5, B6, B7, and vitamins A and K.

But here’s the thing: If you swap all that animal protein for an equally diverse diet of plant-based proteins like nuts, seeds, and beans, you are no worse off. That’s because these foods are also packed full of a similar spectrum of nutrients. The biggest difference is vitamin B12, which most plants cannot produce on their own. You can get B12 from edible seaweed and in fortified cereals, though the easiest way is through supplementation or by eating animal products.

Given their equal vitamin profile, Andrea Giancoli, a registered dietitian in California says plant-based proteins are far healthier than their meat counterparts. That’s because, pound-for-pound, they pack more nutrients into fewer calories. They also have one thing that animal proteins completely lack: fiber. (Except for things like tofu, which is processed, Giancoli notes.) Let’s not forget the fiber. Fiber aids in digestion, promotes a healthy gut microbiome, and is strongly associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk.

People who eat plant proteins in part have healthier habits

Meta-analyses that compared people who eat animal versus plant proteins consistently find that, even after adjusting for other influential factors like socioeconomic class, weight, and exercise habits, those who eat plants tend to live longer, healthier lives. They tend to have less cardiovascular disease and fewer cancer cases, though especially the cancer association tends to drop away once other factors have been controlled for. Despite all that controlling, though, there’s still an association with living a longer life with fewer heart problems. There are almost certainly some small factors contributing to the association. People who eat plant proteins may see their doctor more regularly and thus get better preventive care. Maybe they tend to live in quieter, less polluted places.

Meat has more saturated fats

Another reason that steak isn’t great for you: the fat that often accompanies it. Fat is part of why steaks and burgers are delicious—it adds mouthfeel and flavor. But it also tends to clog up your heart. “[With plant proteins] you get less saturated fat and no cholesterol,” Giancoli explains, “so you’re getting that benefit as well.”

Saturated fats are those that are solid at room temperature and tend to contribute to cardiovascular disease (though not as much as trans fats) because it drives up your total cholesterol levels. That may, in the long run, tip the scales towards the LDL (low density lipid) side, which is what clogs up arteries. Foods like nuts, avocados, and fish have far less saturated fats than red and other dark meats. As such, they are dubbed healthy fats.

Processed, red meat is carcinogenic, and grilled meat may be too

You probably heard about the massive World Health Organization (WHO) report a few years ago proclaiming that processed, red meats were carcinogenic. Colorectal cancer in particular has been associated with eating red meat, and so have pancreatic and prostate cancer. Processed meats, like bacon and sausage, also contribute to colorectal cancer. Even grilled meat is known to have some carcinogenic compounds in it (those black char marks are where they mostly lie); seared meat has a similar effect.

In the grand scheme of cancer, meat isn’t the biggest player. Recent estimates by the Global Burden of Disease Project, a subset of the WHO, put the number of annual cancer cases from red meat at 50,000. That’s compared to 200,000 from air pollution, 600,000 from alcohol, and one million from tobacco. But it’s not nothing.

If we’re taking an exclusively long-range, zoomed-out, big picture view it’s fairly undeniable that getting your protein from plants would be healthier overall. But dietitians like Giancoli are also adamant about one other important thing: Food should be enjoyable. We shouldn’t spend our lives gorging only on ice cream and pizza, but if you love burgers you should have them. Not every night—just sometimes. The key to a successful diet, as many dietitians will tell you, is balance and moderation. And beans.

How Does A Flipped Classroom Work?

The buzz about flipped classrooms and blended learning environments hasn’t quieted down. Educators who haven’t yet experimented with these models are probably wondering if they’ll work in your classroom. Here are three FAQs to help you decide.

1. What are the differences between flipped, blended and traditional learning?

The traditional classroom is the one we’re all most familiar with. During class, teachers lecture and lead activities, then at home students do further enrichment and reinforcement activities.

Blended learning brings together elements of both traditional and flipped classrooms. Students may watch videos or use multimedia tools that explain or demonstrate concepts in or out of class, and teachers may continue to lecture and lead enrichment activities in the classroom. One of the benefits of a blended learning model is that by design it addresses multiple learning styles and modalities, ensuring that at least some activities will resonate with all of your students’ learning styles.

2. What do these learning modalities look like in practice?

One of the benefits teachers have mentioned is the ability to move some of the rote, skills-based instruction out of the classroom. In English classes, teachers can have students use vocabulary and grammar drill programs such as chúng tôi and GrammarBytes to build skills, then use class time for higher-level activities such as writing, revision and analysis of texts. Or, teachers can create videos that explain language arts concepts, as college instructor Dr. Jennifer Bernstein has done. She has shown these videos in class, finding that students were more engaged when she explained concepts on screen rather than in front of them. Her students can also watch the videos to review concepts outside of class.

Math teachers can flip their classrooms by using digital lessons to instruct students and allow them to practice skills at home using their personal or school-assigned devices before classroom discussions. Class time can then be used for whole-group and small-group activities that reinforce mathematical thinking. This combination of online-guided practice and observation by the teacher can help students not only better grasp fundamental math concepts but also see the fun and relevant side of math.

In science, the possibilities for fun in-class experiments really open up when teachers either flip the classroom or use blended learning methods. Not only can students see more science in action, but also they can have science experiences they couldn’t have in a traditional classroom. For example, seeing videos of space explorations or using virtual dissection tools and videos rather than in-class dissections.

3. Where can you find resources to flip your own classroom?

The rise in popularity of flipped and blended learning means there are many resources for instructional videos. You can find high-quality materials on YouTube, education-focused sites such as Knowmia, or targeted sites such as NeoK12. But even better, many of the textbooks you’re already using come with multimedia materials that are tied to your district’s or school’s educational goals already. And classroom technology systems also include carefully vetted and instructionally appropriate materials students can use both in class and out.

There’s a reason many educators are looking to the flipped classroom and blended learning — they can help students become more engaged in their learning and help the teacher make better use of class time.

WordPress Vulnerability In Shortcodes Ultimate Impacts 700,000 Sites

Shortcodes Ultimate is a highly popular WordPress plugin that has over 700,000 active installations.

The vulnerability affects plugin versions that are older than the current version 5.12.2.

Cross-Site Request Forgery Vulnerability

Cross-Site Request Forgery, commonly referred to as CSRF, is a type of vulnerability that can in the worst cases can lead to complete website takeover.

These kinds of vulnerabilities are generally caused by targeting a flaw in software that can trigger a change, which can then lead to unintended consequences.

According to the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP):

“CSRF is an attack that tricks the victim into submitting a malicious request.

It inherits the identity and privileges of the victim to perform an undesired function on the victim’s behalf…

For most sites, browser requests automatically include any credentials associated with the site, such as the user’s session cookie, IP address, Windows domain credentials, and so forth.

Therefore, if the user is currently authenticated to the site, the site will have no way to distinguish between the forged request sent by the victim and a legitimate request sent by the victim.”

National Vulnerability Database (NVD)

The National Vulnerability Database published just a few details about the vulnerability. There is currently no complete breakdown of the vulnerability itself.

“Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in Shortcodes Ultimate plugin <= 5.12.0 at WordPress leading to plugin preset settings change.”

The official Shortcodes Ultimate GitHub changelog was similarly vague, describing the update to fix the vulnerability:

“### 5.12.1

**Security release**

This update fixes a security vulnerability in the shortcode generator. Thanks to Dave John for discovering it.”

Meanwhile the WordPress plugin repository changelog explains:

“Fixed issue with Shortcode Generator Presets, introduced in the previous update”

The above changelog appears to misspell the security researcher’s name, which is correctly spelled Dave Jong, CTO of Patchstack, the person who is credited with discovering and reporting the vulnerability.

Recommended Course of Action

WordPress publishers who currently use Shortcodes Plugin should consider updating to the very latest version, which at the time of writing is currently version 5.12.2.
