2023 BMW X5 M50i and X7 M50i give SUVs a 530hp twin-turbo V8

Your SUV needs more power, and BMW wants to give it too you. The latest chess move in the German automaker’s strategy of M-all-the-things, the 2023 BMW X5 M50i and X7 M50i answer the age-old question of “why doesn’t my luxury truck do 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds like the new Toyota Supra?”

To make sure you’re never embarrassed in a straight line dash at the lights by a Japanese sports car, BMW slots the new version of the N63 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 under the hood of its M50i variants. In the 2023 X5 M50i it grants that 4.1 second time; the larger, heavier 2023 X7 M50i follows on shortly after, at 4.5 seconds.

Considering just how big these SUVs are, no small amount of power is required from the V8. 530 horsepower arrives between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm, while the peak 553 lb-ft of torque drops from just 1,800 rpm. That’s 67 hp and 74 lb-ft more than the regular xDrive50i versions of each.

Off the lot, and on all-season tires, top speed is an electronically-limited 130 mph. Opt for summer performance rubber, meanwhile, and that rises to 155 mph. BMW has paired the V8 with an eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission, with new shift programing and steering wheel paddles. There’s Launch Control for getting away without delay from the school drop-off, and if you spec the Active Cruise Control system the transmission will preemptively shift according to the trajectory of the upcoming road.

Going around corners is just as important, of course, and so there’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive with an electronically controlled rear M Sport differential. The 2023 X5 M50i and X7 M50i are rear-biased in normal driving, indeed the SUVs can push all of the power to the back wheels if needed. Meanwhile, the differential can push power left to right at the rear, depending on traction conditions.

Double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension has been fettled by the M team, with the X5 M50i combining it with Adaptive M Suspension. The X7 M50i goes for two-axle air suspension as standard; it’s an option on the smaller SUV. The air suspension allows for almost an inch lower ride height in Sport mode, or at speeds above 85 mph; alternately, it can be lifted up to 1.6-inches for better clearance.

M Sport Brakes get two-piece, lightweight compound brake disks. The 2023 X5 M50i combines them with 20-inch M Star-spoke light alloy wheels with 275/45R20 run-flat all-season tires as standard; you can have up to 22-inch wheels if you’d prefer. The 2023 X7 M50i goes for 22-inch cerium grey M V-spoke wheels as standard, though you can get smaller 21-inch versions if you’d prefer.

Inside, there’s BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional and a Harman Kardon Surround Sound system. Apple CarPlay is supported, and there’s wireless charging, multi-contour sports seats, and WiFi hotspot. Options include glass controls and a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Audio System, together with driver assistance features like the Dynamic Handling Package, 3D parking assistance, and adaptive cruise.

Production of the two feistier SUVs is set to kick off in August of this year. They’ll join the BMW line-up in US dealerships come the fall. Pricing starts at $82,150 (plus $995 destination) for the 2023 X5 M50i, and at $99,600 (plus $995 destination) for the 2023 X7 M50i.

The car world may be going all-wheel drive, but BMW still has rear-wheel drive ambitions: welcome, then, the BMW Concept Z4. Previewing, as the name suggests, the third-generation Z4 that will replace the seven year old second-gen car, the droptop two-seater is being shown off for the first time at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2023 this week. It’s a chance to bring the sporty convertible bang up to date with BMW’s current design language.

The familial resemblance with the second-generation Z4 is clear. Like that car, it has a long hood and short trunk, pushing the cabin back and extending out the wheelbase. This time around, though, BMW has truncated the overhangs and trimmed the hood length, which it says puts the driver closer to the center of the Z4 Concept.

Up front, the shark nose fascia is even more aggressive, with the oversized kidney grille lower and broader than before. BMW says it wanted to trigger associations with the Z8 and give the Z4 Concept “a certain flamboyance.” It’s not the only heritage touch, mind: the mesh that fills those kidneys is a nod to the BMW 328 Mille Miglia classic.

Unusually, the headlamps have been spun 90-degrees and stack two overlapping tubes on each size. The turn signals have been integrated, pointing into the grilles diagonally, while their shape and angles are echoed in the gill-vents on the clamshell hood. Bigger front apron vents and a sizable carbon-fiber insert borrow from BMW’s motorsports division.

At the back, meanwhile, the twin domes that stretch back from the headrests help hide the rollover bars. Wide hips over flared wheel arches are offset by slim, L-shaped rear lamps. A wider-than-normal spoiler helps emphasize the overall width of the car, while the carbon-fiber diffuser picks up the motorsports theme from the front. BMW says the goal was to emphasize the car’s rear-wheel drive nature, while the lowered door sills help to underscore how close to the road the Z4 Concept is.

Inside, meanwhile, the Energetic Orange exterior paint continues, along with chrome and leather. BMW opted to make the driver’s seat, plus the door trim, instrument panel, and center stack all black, making a visual cocoon that wraps around the driver. Twin displays are mounted – one behind the wheel, one atop the center stack – at almost the exact same height, with the ability to move graphics between the two as if they were a single ribbon of screen.

A head-up display projects key data right into the driver’s eyeline, Controls are grouped into what BMW is calling “function islands” that can be easily identified and reduce distraction. Laser-cut motifs bring a hexagonal pattern into the cabin, while there’s carbon-fiber on the door sills.

“The BMW Concept Z4 in an all-out driving machine,” Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President of BMW Group Design, said of the car. “Stripping the car back to the bare essentials allows the driver to experience all the ingredients of motoring pleasure with supreme directness. This is total freedom on four wheels.”

That freedom will see a few changes, most likely, before it’s available for sale. BMW says it’s a “look ahead” to the production Z4, that will be unveiled officially next year. Expect the same sort of overall styling and proportions, but a more straightforward cabin, at the very least.

The new 2023 Lexus LX 600 — the all-new one-stop-shop replacement for the Lexus LX 570 and Toyota Land Cruiser siblings — is finally here. It’s a welcome update to Lexus’s full size SUV platform; despite the outgoing model’s off-road prowess, the LX 570 is now old enough to be entering its freshman year of high school. When it debuted 14 years ago, it did so in a market nearly devoid of competitors approaching its abilities and comfort.

Now, as it rides into the sunset, it leaves behind a stacked field for not just ultra-plush full-size SUVs, but ones packed with trail-running promise. The newest LX needs not only to carry on the Land Cruiser’s legacy, but compete with tougher rivals than Lexus has ever faced in the segment.

And so with these high stakes, Lexus has chosen the wise strategy of incremental — but marked — improvement for the LX 600. The least noticeable place to spot revisions, however, is perhaps by staring at it. It’s big and brawny to behold, as every Land Cruiser ever created has been. Aside from perhaps its towering front grille, though, nearly every physical dimension is identical to the outgoing model, with length and width only increasing roughly half an inch, and wheelbase remaining unchanged from the LX 570.

Much to the relief of Land Cruiser enthusiasts, the LX 600 retains the true-SUV body-on-frame format. All of the off-road strengths that made the Toyota SUV a cult classic — full-time 4WD with hi/lo gearing, crawl control with a locking center differential, adaptive height control — are retained. It’s a proven format, and Lexus has wisely decided not to try to fix what isn’t broken.

Poke around inside, however, and it becomes clear this is a full-size for a new decade. Lexus has done away with the beefy yet inefficient 5.7L V8 that powered the LX 570, instead choosing to nestle their new 3.5L twin-turbo V6 (shared with the newest LS 500) under the brute’s hood. And yet, despite losing nearly half its displacement, power and torque still improve over the old model: the forced-induction V6 puts out 409 HP and a very noticeable 479 ft-lb of torque that is on tap from nearly a standstill.

If the power improvements weren’t noticeable enough on their own, Lexus has thrown two more gears in the transmission, giving it a 10-speed automatic over the previous 8-speed. And if any straggling Land Cruiser devotees still aren’t on board with the newest flagship, the LX 600 shaves a more-than-respectable four hundred forty pounds from the old 570’s curb weight, getting it down to a mere 5,665 pounds in base trim, while still being able to tow eight thousand pounds. All these improvements and the LX 600 gets a solid 19 combined MPG, over the less-than-stellar 14 miles per gallon the Land Cruiser attained. It’s a marked – and much needed – drivetrain modernization all around: more efficient, yet more capable.

Time, focus, and improved engineering has made the LX 600 a more compelling package under the hood, to be sure. But the easiest place to notice these improvements – and indeed, Lexus’ new ethos for their lineup in general – is in the cabin. The LX 600 starts at $86,900 (plus a $1,345 destination fee), actually thirty dollars less than the outgoing model, and for that price buyers get a 5-passenger, nicely equipped full-size SUV.

Every trim level gets a 12.3″ upper touchscreen for infotainment and a 7″ lower touchscreen for vehicle status; the opportunity to keep an eye on wheel slip on the lower monitor while choosing the latest bangers from my Spotify playlists on the upper screen was welcomed. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard, too, as is wireless charging.

An even more welcome addition to the LX 600 is Lexus’ Safety System 2.5, their newest-generation driver aid suite. The 14-year-old LX 570 only featured forward collision prevention and lane departure warnings, which were excellent in 2008, but presented a significant weakness for an $85,000 truck in 2023. Now, however, lane keep and emergency steering are standard, as is emergency braking for rear cross traffic. The newest model also comes equipped with four cameras to allow for 360 degree views when parking, as well as front-wheel and underside views for the trickiest blind sections of trails.

When I finally got behind the wheel of the LX 600, it was in the gorgeous mountain landscapes of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and proving its off-road prowess in the Land of Enchantment was a cinch. This is the Land Cruiser that Toyota devotees know and love; tackling loose, rocky descents is an afterthought in 4 low with crawl control engaged. As it always has, it makes its considerable heft and mass seem like misprints in the brochure. The trail cameras made blind crests a breeze and its 25 degrees of approach meant I could drive straight off a mountain onto level ground, no sweat.

The only complaint I really had was that the active height control, which offers a staggering 6″ of travel via hydraulic suspension, is now optional on all but the highest trim — rather than standard as it was on the LX 570 — and isn’t even offered on the two lowest trims. You’ll be dropping at least six figures to even get the privilege of spending another $1,300 on the extremely useful package. Why such a capable vehicle keeps an objectively great off-road feature on its highest trims — those arguably least likely to ever leave the pavement — baffles me.

But, with the LX 600 having more than proved its prowess off-road to me, I headed back to the winding pavement connecting New Mexico’s gorgeous landscapes together. Also, as expected, it remained excellently composed. In the moments I had the objectively incredible Mark Levinson sound system silenced, the cabin remained virtually free of noise or drone; even with my foot to the mat urging the twin-turbo V6 to get me up on-ramps, engine noise was minimal.

The transmission’s shifts are incredibly smooth; steering – now controlled with an electric rack for the first time in the history of the Land Cruiser line – is a bit heavy in Sport modes, but in Comfort or Eco, I found it much gentler on the forearms, without swerving too far into numbness.

But driving is only half of the story. The LX 600 comes in five trims, ranging from base at a tad under eighty-seven grand, all the way to a whopping $126,000 for the Ultra Luxury tier. In its fully-kitted form, it transforms from a very plush off-road runner to a VIP limousine (chauffeur, sadly, not included). The middle seat disappears entirely for the Ultra Luxury and the SUV becomes a four-seater; the rear seats turn into diamond-stitched captains’ chairs with recliners and full body massagers built in, all controlled through a center touchscreen. Both rear occupants can stay occupied with a pair of 7.0″ seat-back touchscreens that can control the 2,400-watt, 25-speaker Mark Levinson sound system, as well as a host of infotainment options.

If this doesn’t sound thoroughly relaxing yet, the rear passengers’ side seat also can fold up the front seat and extend an ottoman. Sitting in the back in complete bliss, letting the massager undo the damage the inbound CRJ 700 had done to my lanky frame just hours before as my favorite music played at an absolutely obscene volume with perfect clarity, the $127,940 as-equipped sticker of my tester felt eminently justifiable. Sorry, new Range Rover Autobiography, Lexus just scooped you.

Hop into a base model, and go wheelin’ with the greatest hits of the Land Cruiser lineup with more power, mileage, and comfort for the same price it’s clocked in at for the past decade and a half. Have your chauffeur bring around an Ultra Luxury, and enjoy the finest creature comforts Lexus has ever offered in the LX – not to mention the best sound system this side of an opera hall. Apple patents could give next iPhones a superior camera

Almost all smartphones include a single image sensor that filters out light into the three basic color components of red, green, and blue, in varying proportions (25% for red, 50% for green, and 25% for blue). The camera software then blends these together to form a single image. Given the reduction in information, the actual image is considerably of lower quality. This filtering is simply a compromise because of the smaller amount of available space you can cram a sensor into when it comes to smartphones versus digital cameras.

Apple’s solution is to employ a light filter cube and three sensors to fit inside that same thin iPhone body. Instead of filtering the light, the cube will split light into its three component colors, which are then redirected through each face of the cube, each to an image sensor designed specifically to handle that particular color. Again, camera software will composite the image from this but it will instead be working on 100% color information, which will result in overall better image quality. This alone is probably already impressive and ingenious, but Apple isn’t stopping there. In fact, this light splitting cube is only the 2nd part of Apple’s camera patent invention.

The other part has to do with zooming lenses and image stability. Again, most smartphones do not have any form of actual zooming, content with relying on digital zooming, because of the amount of space that would be needed to incorporate the parts inside a smartphone. Just look at how thick even the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom is, which was built just for the purpose of giving a smartphone some digital camera prowess. And in terms of OIS or optical image stabilization, the iPhone 6 Plus already has one, but Apple’s patent intends to improve on it by using a mirror that has actuators that move in opposition to the shaking movement when held in a hand.

As much as these ideas are noteworthy in themselves already, equally interesting is how Apple intends on fitting them all inside an iPhone. Apple is quite stubborn at keeping its iPhones at a certain size, even if it had finally conceded when it came to the size of the screen. In order to keep things still thin while fitting all those components, Apple’s patent is calling for a different camera component design, one that extends sideways across the width of the iPhone and shaped more like a periscope. It is, indeed, a creative way of solving one of the most difficult puzzles when it came to smartphone cameras.

Now the question becomes whether Apple will implement this soon. As a patent, there is no assurance that it will ever see the light of day in an actual device. But given the ingenuity and benefits that these would bring, it’s hard not to see Apple trying to make it a reality in a future iPhone generation.

Viliv has outed its range of three new tablets at CES 2011 this week, as promised, the Viliv X7 Android Tablet, Viliv X10 Android Tablet, and the Viliv X70 Windows 7 Slate. Each Android tablet is powered by a 1GHz Samsung Cortex-A8 processor with Power VR SGX 540 GPU and 512MB of memory, the X7 having a 7-inch, 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen while the X10 has a 10.2-inch 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen. Meanwhile, the X70 Windows 7 slate runs an unspecified “next-gen” Intel CPU with a 7-inch 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen.

Both Android models have WiFi b/g/n, optional 3G HSPA or WiMAX or EVDO wireless conenctivity, Bluetooth and GPS, along with a rear 3-megapixel camera and a front 1.3-megapixel camera for video calls. There’s also HDMI, microUSB and a microSD card slot to augment the 8GB, 16GB or 32GB of onboard storage. Sensors include an accelerometer, ambient light, and digital compass. The X7 has a 5,600 mAh battery, good Viliv says for up to 9.5hrs runtime, while the X10 has an 8,300 mAh battery, good for over 10hrs

As for the Windows 7 based Viliv X70, that has 1GB or 2GB of RAM, a choice of 32GB or 64GB SSD and either the Starter or Home Premium versions of Microsoft’s OS. There’s WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth, optional HSPA/WiMAX/EVDO and GPS, together with the same cameras as the Android slates. Ports include HDMI, microUSB and microSD, and the 5,600 mAh battery is good for up to 6.5hrs. Impressively, it weighs a mere 420g and is just 14.3mm thick.

The Viliv X7 Android tablet and Viliv X10 Android tablet will go on sale in March and April 2011 respectively. No word on availability for the Viliv X70 Windows 7 Slate, nor pricing for any of the three. Viliv say the Android version is also undecided, and could be either 2.2 Froyo or Honeycomb; however, if rumors of Honeycomb being restricted to dual-core processors are true, that could force Viliv’s hand in the wrong direction.
